Will the BMW iX Get a Second Generation?

The BMW iX represents the pinnacle of the brand’s current electric vehicle offerings, having made its debut to much fanfare in July 2021. With a planned production run extending for seven years, the iX is set to receive a significant technological upgrade in Spring 2025. According to sources, production is expected to wrap up by 2028, with no direct successor planned under the same name and platform.

One of BMW’s Best Crossovers

The BMW iX was built on a dedicated electric platform, allowing designers to create a unique and standout vehicle. This approach mirrors the innovative spirit seen in the BMW i3, particularly in the iX’s smart, minimalist interior designed to maximize space for all passengers. The investment in a unique platform was substantial, and its long-term payoff remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, BMW’s larger electric vehicle lineup benefits from the efficiencies provided by the CLAR (rear-wheel drive) and FAAR (front-wheel drive) platforms. This practical approach to electric mobility will continue with the introduction of two new CLAR-based electric crossovers, the BMW iX5 and iX7, in 2026-2027.

These new models will pose marketing challenges for the iX, which, despite being an excellent vehicle, suffers from a somewhat ambiguous position within the lineup. Many buyers are still unclear about the iX’s role, given its size positions it between the X5 and X7.

Future Prospects: A Neue Klasse iX-Like SUV?

We’re curious whether a future SUV similar to the iX will adopt the Neue Klasse engineering philosophy. An EV-first platform offers numerous advantages, including better design, packaging, and efficiency. We’re optimistic that the coming decade will bring an exciting new electric vehicle from Munich.
