Tesla hacker finds selfie camera code for possible Model S, Model X update

CNBC managed to get a hold of an internal e-mail sent to Tesla employees sent earlier this month, saying production of the Model S and Model X would be halted beginning December 24. The hiatus is expected to last until January 11 when the assembly of the two more expensive Teslas should be resumed.

It is widely believed the pause has to do with an impending update the Model S and Model X are bound to go through. It’s a much-needed refresh seeing as how the sedan has been around since 2012 and could use a styling refresh. Its SUV counterpart might also undergo cosmetic surgery taking into account it’s been on the market for a little over five years.

There’s a new clue pointing in the same direction as Tesla hacker @greentheonly has found a code related to a selfie camera for the Model S and Model X. This feature is only available in the cheaper Model 3 and Model Y, which would suggest the bigger vehicles are about to undergo some hardware changes.

Chances are the selife camera’s implementation will be similar to how Tesla has applied it for the Model 3 and Model Y where it’s positioned right above the rearview mirror. Elon Musk previously said the main idea behind the camera is to keep an eye on passengers once robotaxies will be rolled out as part of a ride-sharing service.

Meanwhile, Tesla is pulling out all the stops by delivering as many Model 3 and Model Y vehicles as possible before the end of the year. Elon Musk is confident it can end 2020 with a record by manufacturing and shipping 500,000 cars a year for the first time ever. To sweeten the pot, all cars delivered by December 31 midnight come bundled with three months of free FSD.
