Genesis GV60 electric luxury crossover stalked in California traffic

Genesis has already hopped on the EV bandwagon with the launch of the Electrified G80 that does away with the combustion engine. A completely bespoke electric vehicle will be out later this year as a more luxurious take on the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6. We’re talking about the GV60 (name not confirmed), which has been spotted undergoing final testing in Orange County, California.

Still heavily camouflaged, the near-production prototype showed the “Two Lines” motif with dual LED light bars for both the headlights and taillights. The Genesis GV60 test vehicle was riding on some of the most intricately designed alloy wheels we have ever seen, which are likely a pain to wash given the complexity of the spokes.

It would appear Hyundai’s luxury division is going for the fastback-esque rear design in the same vein as the Ford Mustang Mach-E. The GV60 seems to have a chunky spoiler on the liftgate along with the typically short front and rear overhangs you would expect from a dedicated EV. As a refresher, the crossover will ride on the E-GMP platform already being used by its equivalent Kia and Hyundai EVs.

Even though it’s almost fully disguised, we are getting the impression the GV60 is going to look substantially different than the angular Ioniq 5 and the sporty EV6. It should have roughly the same size and a massive wheelbase offering legroom we associate with combustion-engined crossovers from a segment above.

Dealers in the United States have already been informed the GV60 will arrive towards the end of the year, which can only mean an official reveal is likely going to take place in the following weeks. Codenamed JW, the all-electric crossover is expected to deliver more performance than the Ioniq 5 to justify the premium commanded by a luxury vehicle.

It remains to be seen whether Genesis will sell the zero-emissions model in a lesser rear-wheel-drive configuration with a single electric motor or it will offer the GV60 exclusively with a dual-motor, AWD setup. It’s not the only new EV the company is working on as the G70 is also getting an Electrified version, which might also debut before the end of 2021.
