As the model’s name implies, it’s essentially an SUV version of the Mercedes-EQS, carrying over the hardware and technology. That means it shares the same massive 56-inch Hyperscreen with three front displays housed within a single piece of curved glass. As standard, it gets electrically adjustable second-row seats while those individual third-row seats will cost extra.

Compared to the regular EQS upon which it’s based, the SUV is 7.8 inches (20 centimeters) taller for better ground clearance. It even has a dedicated off-road mode with a hill-descent feature, while rear-wheel steering is standard. The latter has a 4.5-degree maximum angle, but can be optionally bumped to 10 degrees via an OTA update.

As expected from a flagship luxury SUV, the Mercedes-EQS gets standard air suspension for a silky-smooth ride. The list of goodies includes a HEPA filter, ventilated seats, five-zone climate control, and a head-up display with AR. Speaking of comfort, the massive wheelbase of 126.3 inches (3,21 meters) makes the cabin supremely spacious. The distance between the axles is far greater than its rivals, even if the Model X also has three rows.

Mercedes will sell the 2023 EQS SUV with standard rear-wheel drive. The 450+ model has an electric motor mounted at the back where it makes 355 hp (265 kW) and 419 lb-ft (568 Nm). Step up to the 580 4Matic and you get AWD with a combined output of 536 hp (400 kW) and 633 lb-ft (858 Nm).

The Euro version will have a range of 660 km (410 miles) WLTP while the EPA rating is unknown. Replenishing the lithium-ion battery pack from 10% to 80% takes 31 minutes when DC charging at 110 kW. From 10% to 100% using a wallbox, it’ll take nearly 11 and a half hours.

Mercedes will build the EQS SUV in Tuscaloosa where the EQE SUV is going to be assembled as well. The larger of the two will be arriving at dealers in the US towards the end of the year. The smaller should follow shortly, with an electric G-Class to land in the coming years. These new dedicated EVs will join the EQA, EQB, and EQC crossovers, which are electric adaptations of their respective combustion-engined models.

The electric Mercedes-Benz S-Class is getting its first performance version. The Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4Matic + was unveiled today at the first ever 2021 IAA in Munich and aims to put pressure on the future BMW i7 limousine.  The new Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 not only delivers the comfort and luxury of an electric S-Class, but also extremely impressive performance.

The AMG EQS 53 starts with a basic version of the car delivering 658 horsepower and 950 Newton meters of torque (700.6 lb-ft). Thus powered, the EQS AMG is claimed to reach 62 mph in 3.8 seconds, with top speed governed at 220 km/h (137 mph).

Mercedes also offers the AMG Dynamic Plus package which, in Race Start mode with boost function, can deliver 761 horsepower and a maximum torque of 1,020 Newton meters (752 lb-ft) can send to the four wheels of the luxury sedan. The 0-to-62-mph time is cut by 0.4 second, and allow the EQS to reach 250 km/h (155 mph).

The technical layout with two electric motors, of which the stronger one is placed on the rear axle, results in an all-wheel drive with rear-heavy power distribution practically automatically. Depending on the specific configuration, the lithium-ion battery with a net capacity of 107.8 kWh is sufficient for a WLTP range of 526 to 580 kilometers, making the AMG-EQS absolutely suitable for everyday use.

There are plenty of new features and tech in the EQS 53: 9-degree rear-wheel steering, larger brakes, AMG 21-inch wheels (additional 21- and 22-inch wheels are available), carbon fiber trim, the AMG Dynamic Plus Package, the AMG Night Package, unique AMG front and rear bumpers, a Panamerican-style faux grille and a ducktail spoiler.

The cabin has been adorned with plenty of luxury items, from nappa leather sport seats to the Alcantara AMG steering wheel and plenty of AMG badges. There are specific fabrics and decor as well as an AMG-specific interpretation of the content on the huge “Hyperscreen.”

Without driving a car, it’s impossible to tell whether it’s going to be good or bad. However, there are certain cars enthusiasts can always be confident in. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is one such car, as it’s consistently at the top of the luxury car segment. So when the three-pointed star decided to make an all-electric S-Class, we were all naturally intrigued. While we haven’t driven this new all-electric Mercedes-Benz EQS just yet, the specs, interior design, technology, and preliminary drive reviews are incredibly impressive.

For starters, let’s take range, as it’s the most important figure for all EVs at the moment. The Mercedes-Benz EQS will pack 107.8 kWh battery pack, which gives it a WLTP-rated range of 480 miles. While the U.S. EPA is tougher than the WLTP, it should still have an EPA-rated range of around 400 miles. That puts it right in line with the best from Tesla and even Lucid. Additionally, it gets two electric motors with a combined 516 horsepower. Immediately, that range and power gives the EQS better EV specs than anything from the Germans.

More than that, though, it also gets a class-leading 200 kW max charging speed. Admittedly, very few charge stations can accommodate that sort of charging speed, so few customers will benefit from it right away. Still, when the opportunity presents itself, the EQS can gain about 190 miles of charge in just 15 minutes.

All of that is well and good but some Teslas already have similar figures. What makes the EQS impressive is that it packs all of that incredible technology into an S-Class’ wrapping and Mercedes-Benz’s typical build quality. So the cabin is absolutely fabulous and jam-packed with a level of luxury that, if any S-Class is anything to go by, would make a Tesla feel like a Trabant. We’ve already discussed Mercedes’ new Hyperscreen technology, which is deeply impressive and gorgeous to look at.

There really are only two things standing in the Benz’s way: style and price. As for the former, we don’t know exactly what the Mercedes-Benz EQS will look like, as we’ve only seen it in factory camouflage, however it does look like an electric bean. Admittedly, in its defense, that wind-swept styling gives it a coefficient of drag of just 0.20, which makes it the most aerodynamic car on the market.

As for price, Mercedes-Benz has yet to release pricing. It’s easy to assume that it will be priced similarly to the S-Class but we fear it will be quite a bit more expensive for a couple of reasons. For starters, all of that impressive battery and cabin tech is pricey, so Mercedes is going to need to recoup some of that cost. Additionally, with those specs, if the EQS is priced similarly to the standard S-Class, it’s likely going to cannibalize S-Class sales and Mercedes might not want that for the same reason Porsche won’t cannibalize the 911. However, if Mercedes sees the EQS more as a long-term replacement for the S-Class, this might not be an issue.

If the Mercedes-Benz EQS looks good enough and is prices similarly to the already immensely popular S-Class, it will have the potential to be the one of the best premium EVs in the world. So if it can deliver on those two things, every automaker should fear the EQS. If you want a great overview of the new EQS, check this video from Roadshow.

Things are getting heated in the premium segment of electric cars. Mercedes-Benz has just announced no less than six new electric models which aim to compete across a wide range of segments. In the future, Mercedes wants to electrify its entire model range under the EQ label. The first six models are labeled Mercedes EQS, EQS SUV, EQE, EQE SUV, EQA and EQB.

Since the names are not yet as self-explanatory as the series designations that have been used for years for vehicles with conventional drives, it is worth taking a short trip through the Mercedes model range and nomenclature. The new models use the same logic as the EQC model, based on the mid-range SUV GLC.

The series designation follows the tried and tested model after the EQ as a reference to the electric drive. While the EQC has so far only been available as an SUV, unlike the planned EQS and EQE models, no further distinction is necessary. In the case of the Mercedes EQS as an electric alternative to the new S-Class sedan , there will also be an EQS SUV based on the GLS truck.

The electric E-Class EQE and the GLE variant EQE SUV come one class lower, while the Mercedes EQA is based on the GLA family. Naturally, the EQB uses the GLB as the base product. For particularly large space requirements, there is the Mercedes EQV based on the V-Class.

Production of the EQA is scheduled to begin this year, the EQB and EQS in 2021. Mercedes says the EQS will offer a driving range of up to 435 miles (700 km).

It is clear that the BMW Group is also one of Mercedes’ most important rivals in the field of electrified drives. Even if BMW has developed a lead in almost all model series with vehicles such as the i3, i8 and numerous plug-in hybrids, the Munich-based company will definitely not rest on their laurels.

Therefore, in the next few years, a wide range of electric BMW products will arrive: i7 (7 Series), i4 (4 Series Gran Coupe), i5 (5 Series), iX1, iX3 (X3) and iX.

Regardless of the products offered by the German automakers, they will all face a stiff competition from Tesla. The American carmaker is already a leader in two segments and is also planning additional products.
