Stellantis organized a conference today to outline its long-term strategic plan and how it plans to embrace electrification in the years to come. By far the most important tidbit was the first official image of the Jeep EV, seen here in all of its boxy glory. The two-tone little crossover has “hidden” rear door handles à la Alfa Romeo and boasts split headlights with an upper LED strip for the daytime running lights.

Jeep didn’t go into any details about its new product, but it’s widely believed the unnamed model will slot below the Renegade to effectively serve as the company’s smallest vehicle. We do know the crossover is scheduled to hit the market early next year, which matches a recent report from Automotive News Europe about production starting in Q4 2022.

It is believed the Jeep EV will ride on the same CMP platform as the Peugeot e-2008 and Opel Mokka-e, two electric crossovers already being sold in Europe.  An equivalent Fiat is said to be in the works as well, along with an Alfa Romeo model believed to be dubbed Brennero. Codenamed “Project 516,” Jeep’s version will initially hit the assembly line in November with a gasoline engine as the EV will follow in February 2023. Come January 2024, a mild-hybrid derivative is expected to join the lineup.

Being a Jeep, logic tells us the purely electric model is going to have all-wheel drive, which consequently means it’ll feature dual motors. As for the battery, both the Peugeot e-2008 and Opel Mokka-e share a 50-kWh pack with a usable capacity of 46.2 kWh. The two crossovers are also available as hatchbacks as the e-208 and Corsa-e, respectively.

The Jeep EV will allegedly use batteries from Chinese company CATL, but that will change in July 2023 when BYD will take over as the supplier. Expect the model to break cover before the end of this year in both gasoline and electric flavors.

Jeep introduced the new Grand Cherokee in the United States at the end of September 2021 when the midsize SUV was presented with a plug-in hybrid powertrain as well. Fast forward to mid-February, the revamped model celebrated its premiere in Europe where it will be sold exclusively with the PHEV setup. Come April, the 4xe version will head back to the US to attend the annual Easter Jeep Safari.

The 56th edition will serve as the venue for the premiere of a new concept based on the Grand Cherokee 4xe. Jeep uses some big words to describe the electrified SUV: “It will certainly conquer even the most tumultuous terrain along the back-country trails of Moab and further highlight the Jeep brand’s vision of accomplishing Zero Emission Freedom.”

Details are shrouded in mystery for the time being, but if previous projects presented in Moab, Utah are any indication, the Grand Cherokee 4xe should have an assortment of body upgrades. Custom wheels are likely in order, along with interior tweaks to further separate it from the road-going SUV.

We wouldn’t bet our money in regards to powertrain upgrades as the PHEV setup will probably be carried over from the production model. As a refresher, the first-ever electrified Grand Cherokee uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine working together with two electric motors. The setup is good for an ample 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet (637 Newton-meters) of torque.

Jeep has fitted the PHEV model with a 17-kWh battery with enough juice for a purely electric range of 25 miles (40 kilometers) for the version sold in the United States. Since Europe uses the more optimistic WLTP test cycle, the model sold on the Old Continent has a slightly longer range of 32 miles (51 kilometers).

The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe concept will be joined at the Easter Jeep Safari on April 9-17 by a customized Gladiator midsize pickup truck.

When Jeep took the wraps off the 2022 Wrangler for the European market back in December, it announced the reputable off-roader would be offered only as a plug-in hybrid. The midsize Grand Cherokee arriving on the Old Continent in the coming months after debuting in the United States last year will also be a PHEV-only affair.

Much like the Renegade, Compass, and Wrangler equipped with a charging port, the Grand Cherokee carries the “4xe” suffix. Its technical specifications haven’t changed compared to the North American model since it features the same combustion engine and a pair of electric motors. The four-cylinder 2.0-liter gasoline unit works with the e-motor duo to produce 375 hp and 637 Nm (470 lb-ft).

While the battery’s size for the Euro-spec model hasn’t been specified, we do know the US-spec Grand Cherokee 4xe boasts a 17-kWh pack good for 40 kilometers (25 miles). However, Jeep is saying the SUV seen here will do as much as 51 kilometers (32 miles). The difference likely stems from the test cycles as WLTP is known for being significantly more generous.

Initially, Jeep will sell the PHEV SUV in the Exclusive Launch Edition. It’s a generously equipped model with everything from a 19-speaker McIntosh audio system to wireless charging for your smartphone. There’s even a dedicated display measuring 10.25 inches for the passenger sitting in the front where the driver gets a digital instrument cluster measuring a slightly smaller 10 inches. As for the infotainment, it too has a 10-inch diagonal.

The list of standard kit is more generous than that, including 16-way electrically adjustable front seats with a massaging function and wrapped in Palermo leather. Jeep adds real walnut accents along with heated and ventilated rear seats. The Grand Cherokee 4xe wants to compete with fully fledged luxury SUVs by featuring four-zone climate control, 21-inch wheels, and all-LED headlights.

It’s already available to buy in some European countries where you will have to order it online until March 30. After that, customers will have to drop by their local Jeep dealers for the necessary paperwork. Mind you, it’s not available all over the continent since the company is currently taking orders only in Italy, France, Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom, Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands.

Jeep introduced the plug-in hybrid versions of the Renegade and Compass a couple of years ago in Europe where the two crossovers carry the 4xe badge. Now, the American brand part of the Stellantis automotive conglomerate is launching a more affordable electrified alternative courtesy of an e-Hybrid variant.

Essentially, we are dealing with a mild-hybrid powertrain promising to cut fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 15% compared to conventional gasoline engines. At the heart of the Jeep Renegade e-Hybrid and Compass e-Hybrid is a newly developed turbocharged 1.5-liter engine. The four-cylinder gasoline unit produces 130 horsepower and 240 Newton-meters (176 pound-feet) of torque channeled to the road via a seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The combustion engine works together with an electric motor rated at 20 hp (15 kW) and 55 Nm (41 lb-ft), which can drive the wheels when the gasoline mill is turned off. Jeep mentions the two crossovers start in electric mode and will continue to have zero emissions at low speeds as well as when cruising and during parking maneuvers.

To maximize efficiency, the e-Hybrid models benefit from regenerative braking to capture the energy that would otherwise be lost during braking and send it to the battery pack. The Renegade and larger Compass come along with a system called “e-Boosting,” which sends more torque to the wheels by making the electric motor support the combustion engine.

Coinciding with the launch of e-Hybrid models is a new Upland special edition dressed in an exclusive Matter Azur paint with a black roof. The Renegade gets 17-inch wheels while the Compass sits on 18-inch alloys, with both sets finished in glossy black. Rounding off the visual tweaks are the MetaKrome bronze accents noticeable on the rings of the front grille as well as the back on the skid plate.

For the interior, buyers can stick with the 8.4-inch touchscreen or opt for the larger 10.1-inch display in the case of the Compass. The aforementioned Upland gets recycled materials, such as bespoke Seaqual material for the seats, made from ocean-sourced recycled plastic. In the case of the Renegade, some of the black plastic panels boast plastic previously used in headlights. For the Compass, the same material can be found on the dashboard and door panels.

With the launch of the Renegade e-Hybrid and Compass e-Hybrid, Jeep is proud to announce it will exclusively sell electrified vehicles by the end of 2022 in the following regions: Germany, Belgium, France, Portugal, Nordics, and The Netherlands. In addition, more than a quarter of the company’s total sales in Europe are represented by the 4xe plug-in hybrid models.

When Jeep introduced the latest generation of the Wrangler for the European market, the iconic off-roader was presented with a choice between gasoline and diesel engines. Then the plug-in hybrid model arrived, and going forward, the PHEV will be the only powertrain available. In other words, the 2022 Wrangler on the Old Continent comes exclusively as a 4xe model.

Why is it happening? Because of stricter emissions regulations, of course. By axing the conventionally powered Wrangler, it consequently means customers will not be able to order the competent SUV with only two doors since the 4xe is available only in the more practical four-door body style. It’s not all bad news as the model year change comes with additional tech and safety kit.

It gets automatic high beam headlamp control as well as adaptive cruise control with stop functionality, not to mention full-speed forward collision warning with braking – all offered as standard equipment. These join the previously available front and rear parking sensors, rearview camera, and a blind spot system. The tougher Gorilla Glass windshield is now available as standard on the Rubicon trim and optional on Sahara, while Silver Zynith Metallic Clear Coat and High Velocity Metallic Clear Coat exterior paints are added to the color palette.

The 2022 Wrangler 4xe arrives on Euro land with a new Sunrider Flip Top, an open-air option encompassing a fabric roof over the driver and front passenger. The rest of the roof consists of a hardtop, combined with the black twill fabric that you will find in other conventional vehicles featuring a folding roof. Jeep will sell this option as a ready-to-install top thanks to the factory-fitted mounting rails and the necessary hardware.

The powertrain stays the same as the 2.0-liter gasoline engine works with two electric motors and an eight-speed automatic transmission. The plug-in hybrid setup offers a generous 380 horsepower and an ample 637 Newton-meters of torque, enabling the Wrangler 4xe sprint to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 6.4 seconds. With the battery fully charged, it will cover more than 50 kilometers (31 miles) without sipping any gasoline.

Jeep is already taking orders for its electrified SUV in select European countries, including Spain, Belgium, Italy, and Serbia. More markets will be added before the end of the year.

Much like Tesla has been doing in recent months by increasing the prices of its EVs, Jeep is once again asking more money for its Wrangler 4xe. The plug-in hybrid SUV has already received a couple of price bumps, and it appears the 2022 model year will cost even more money. Cars Direct has managed to get a hold of Jeep’s order guide for the 2022MY and they’ve discovered yet another price hike.

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara 4xe is going to cost from $54,125 including destination fees whereas the better equipped Rubicon trim level will set you back $57,825. In other words, both versions of the electrified off-roader are going to be $1,005 more expensive than before, which is a tough pill to swallow if you’ve been saving for the SUV equipped with a PHEV setup.

It’s especially true if you compare 2022MY prices with the Wrangler 4xe’s original sticker as prices have gone up by approximately 9 percent in only a year or so. Despite several price increases, the plug-in hybrid SUV is in great demand as the 2021MY is technically sold out. Your only chance to get behind the wheel of one is by buying one of the vehicles dealers have ordered, so those who want to spec the SUV will have to patiently wait for the 2022MY.

Although in some cases price increases are reflected in more standard equipment, that sadly doesn’t seem to be the case here. Cars Direct reports there are no changes in terms of what you get with the 2022 Wrangler 4xe compared to the previous model year. The silver lining here is the electrified off-roader qualifies for the federal tax credit of up to $7,500, thus resulting in a more attractive deal.

Those interested in leasing should know that going down this route will make the 4xe variant more affordable to lease than the conventional Wrangler powered solely by a gasoline engine.

Back in July, Jeep CEO Chrstian Meunier was happy to report that the Wrangler 4xe was sold out for the entire 2021 model year. The electrified off-roader is indeed one of the quickest-selling hybrids available in North America, but you can still get behind the wheel of a new one despite the head honcho’s statement made months ago.

How is that possible? Jeep North America President Jim Morrison told Muscle Cars and Trucks there are enough dealer orders expected to last until the end of the year. In other words, while it might not be possible to order a new Wrangler 4xe today, Jeep dealers should have plenty of inventory for customers to pick from.

As Morrison explains in the interview: “We have enough Wrangler 4xe dealer orders to get us through the end of the year. We are still within that prioritizing of our customer orders. So if a customer comes in and gets a sold order, we’ll still put them in at the head of the line.”

While Europe also gets a Renegade 4xe and a Compass 4xe, Jeep USA is only selling the Wrangler 4xe, with a Grand Cherokee 4xe on the way. The reputable off-roader is available strictly in the four-door Unlimited body style and three trim levels: $51,225 Sahara, $54,925 Rubicon, and the $57,045 Altitude, with all three prices excluding the $1,595 destination charges and the federal tax credit of up to $7,500.

It is widely believed the Gladiator, essentially a Wrangler pickup truck, will also receive the 4xe treatment with the same PHEV setup. It should combine the turbocharged 2.0-liter, four-cylinder gasoline engine with dual electric motors, a 17-kWh lithium-ion battery, and an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The Wrangler 4xe offers a substantial 375 horsepower and 637 Newton-meters (470 pound-feet) and can cover up to 21 miles (34 kilometers) without sipping any gasoline. Chances are the Gladiator 4xe could have a shorter EV range since it’s going to be significantly heavier than the SUV version, but that remains to be seen.

Following a long teaser campaign, the new 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee is here. Specifically, we’re looking at the two-row model as the three-row Grand Cherokee L was unveiled earlier this year. The biggest difference between the two can be found underneath the hood where the smaller SUV gets a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

The Grand Cherokee 4xe joins other PHEVs from Jeep, such as the Wrangler 4xe sold in the United States where the Gladiator 4xe pickup is due to arrive shortly. Over in Europe, the smaller Renegade and Compass crossovers are both offered with a combustion engine working together with an electric motor. The 4xe offerings could expand to include the Grand Cherokee L as well as the larger Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer flagship SUVs.

Much like the rumors have indicated in the build-up to the Grand Cherokee’s world premiere today, the 4xe does indeed get the same electrified setup as the aforementioned Wrangler 4xe. It combines a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine with a pair of electric motors for a total output of 375 hp (280 kW) and 470 lb-ft (637 Nm).

Jeep is targeting 25 miles (40 kilometers) of range in EV mode, while as a PHEV, the SUV should be able to cover distances of more than 440 miles (708 km). The estimated fuel economy of 57 MPGe is pretty good for such a large and heavy vehicle equipped with a 17-kWh battery pack. Interestingly, all components and high-voltage electronic systems are sealed and waterproof, prompting Jeep to add “Trail Rated” badges to signal the vehicle’s off-road capabilities.

The 4xe model comes with selectable operating modes (E Selec), giving drivers the possibility to pick between Hybrid, Electric, and eSave modes. Hybrid combines the torque of the electric drive with that of the combustion engine for the best balance in terms of efficiency and power. Electric shuts off the gas engine, which is reactivated automatically if the battery is running low or the driver presses hard on the gas pedal.

As for the eSave mode, it prioritizes the use of the combustion engine to save the battery’s energy for later use. This mode itself features Battery Save and Battery Charge modes, which can be turned on through the Uconnect infotainment system.

It’s worth noting the 4xe comes in the Trailhawk flavor, which is the most off-road-focused Grand Cherokee of the bunch. It boasts the Quadra Drive II all-wheel drive system with a two-speed gearbox and 2.72:1 reduced gear ratio and benefits from an electronic limited-slip rear self-locking differential. It can be visually distinguished thanks to its blue tow hooks, unique 18-inch wheels with blue trim, and all-terrain tires.

Jeep plans to have the 2022 Grand Cherokee – including 4xe – on sale in North America early next year, with global markets to follow shortly thereafter.

It was at the beginning of the year when Jeep introduced the three-row Grand Cherokee L and we now get to learn we’ll have to wait until next Wednesday to check out its shorter two-row counterpart. The regular Grand Cherokee will represent the fifth generation of the iconic SUV, and for the first time ever, it will be electrified.

Indeed, Jeep is confirming the world premiere will include a 4xe version, which is a suffix the company is already using for the Wrangler fitted with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. We’re hearing the Wrangler’s pickup truck sibling, the Gladiator, will also receive a charging port later this year. Meanwhile, the Grand Cherokee 4xe is set to make its debut on September 29.

As shown below, it’s worth mentioning Jeep has already previewed the Grand Cherokee 4xe during the Stellantis: EV Day back in July, but without revealing any technical specifications. It’s unclear what sort of powertrain it will use, whether it will be different than what Jeep is using in the Wrangler 4xe. As a refresher, the electrified off-roader relies on a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine and a pair of electric motors.

The Wrangler 4xe delivers a combined output of 375 horsepower (280 kilowatts) and 470 pound-feet (637 Newton-meters) of torque. It uses a fairly small lithium-ion battery pack with a capacity of 17.3 kWh, which has enough juice for 22 miles of pure electric range. The Grand Cherokee 4xe could end up heavier, therefore possibly requiring a beefier powertrain and a larger battery, but nothing is official at this point.

Following the Grand Cherokee and Gladiator PHEV versions, Jeep brand CEO Christian Meunier has already confirmed the bigger Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer SUVs will receive 4xe models as part of the firm’s extended electrified lineup. It would make sense for the Grand Cherokee L to also get the PHEV treatment sooner rather than later.

You will have to dig a little bit deeper in your pockets to get behind the wheel of a Jeep Wrangler 4xe as the best-selling plug-in hybrid vehicle in the United States is now a little bit more expensive. A recent dealer order guide discovered by Cars Direct shows the electrified off-roader has been subjected to a fairly substantial price hike for the second time in 2021.

In the Sahara trim level, the four-door-only Wrangler 4xe will now set you back $52,520 MSRP with destination while the range-topping Rubicon retails for $56,220. That makes the PHEV version $1,220 more expensive than before and it follows a price bump from earlier this year. As a refresher, the vehicle originally carried a starting price of $49,490. In other words, it’s now a rather substantial $3,030 pricier than before. Jeep spokesperson Ron Kiino confirmed the latest price bump in an e-mail sent to Cars Direct.

The silver lining is the asking price does not take into account the federal tax credit of $7,500 and any discounts the dealer might offer. The Wrangler 4xe is in high demand taking into consideration Jeep is happy to report the entire production run allocated for 2021 has been sold out. That can only mean placing an order today will result in a vehicle delivered most likely in early 2022, so new customers are in for a long wait.

The Jeep Wrangler 4xe will soon be following by an equivalent Gladiator plug-in hybrid serving as an electrified pickup truck. It should use the same turbocharged 2.0-liter, four-cylinder gasoline engine working together with a pair of electric motors, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and a 17-kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

The PHEV arrangement is good for 375 horsepower and 637 Newton-meters (470 pound-feet) of torque while the battery has enough juice for 21 miles (34 kilometers). Bear in mind the Gladiator 4xe won’t match the efficiency of the Wrangler 4xe considering it’s substantially heavier. We should have all the details in the coming months as the truck could debut before the end of 2021.
