Much like its sister model, the Hyundai Ioniq 5, the 2022 Kia EV6 is one of the most interesting electric vehicles to go on sale in the United States this year. Available for sale in all 50 states, the crossover will be available in three trim levels (Light, Wind, GT-Line) with a choice between two battery sizes – either 58 kWh or 77.4 kWh.

In addition, customers can pick from a rear-wheel-drive version with a single electric motor or the more potent dual-motor setup coming along with AWD. Stick with the base Light RWD model and you’ll have 167 horsepower on tap and the smaller battery, while the Wind RWD and GT-Line RWD up the power ante to 225 hp and get the bigger pack.  The range-topping dual-motor available as the Wind AWD and GT-Line AWD offer a substantial 320 hp.

Trim Levels/Pricing – MSRP: (excludes $1,215 destination and the $7,500 federal tax credit)

·        EV6 Light RWD $40,900
·        EV6 Wind RWD $47,000
·        EV6 Wind Dual Motor e-AWD $50,900
·        EV6 GT-Line RWD $51,200
·        EV6 GT-Line Dual Motor e-AWD $55,900

If you’re more interested in range rather than output, you’ll want to combine RWD with the 77.4-kWh since the Wind RWD and GT-Line RWD are estimated to go for 310 miles on a single charge. The Wind AWD and GT-Line AWD are up next with 274 miles, while the entry-level Light RWD makes do with 232 miles between charges.

The 2022 Kia EV6 features bidirectional charging, thus allowing owners to transform their electric crossovers into mobile power sources courtesy of the Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function. The South Korean brand says it will have its first dedicated EV in dealerships across the United States in the coming weeks.

Aside from the $7,500 federal electric vehicle tax credit, the zero-emission crossover may qualify for additional state incentives, thus further bringing down the asking price. Factoring in only the federal electric vehicle tax credit and the mandatory $1,215 destination, the most attainable EV6 will set you back $34,615.

Certain electric cars are bound to make a splash and attract a lot of attention. Without the usual constraints of internal combustion engines, taking the power of electric motors to outrageous levels is easy to achieve. Any car with 1,000 HP will attract a lot of curious looks. Any car with mind-boggling acceleration figures will get hundreds of positive headlines on websites around the world. And yet, a lot of people won’t actually care since the price tags are not attainable to many.

That’s why cars like the Kia EV6 also get a lot of praise and spark a lot of enthusiasm. Kia and Hyundai have been on a steady growth pattern in the last 20 years or so. They have been offering a lot of very good cars for decent prices. With the new, electric era just around the corner, the automotive market is curious to see how they will handle it. The answer to their potential success lies in the new E-GMP platform they developed.

Electric-Focused Platform

E-GMP stands for Electric Global Modular Platform and it was developed from the ground up to house electric models, and to be modular. That means it will underpin all the Battery Electric Vehicles to come from Seoul from now on. The first effort from Kia comes in the shape of the EV6, a car that, in theory, has all the tech you could possibly need, at a decent price.

That last bit is important because customers have been getting used to great deals from their Kia dealers. They also come with some of the longest warranties in the industry and that shows that Kia stands behind its products. At the same time, the EV6 is not necessarily cheap, at least according to Kia standards. The pricing is starting at $56,000 and while in the grand scheme of things it doesn’t seem like that much, makes the EV6 the most expensive car you can get from the South Korean manufacturer right now. And that’s the starting price! So, is it worth the money?

Great Looks With Higher Price Tags

The EV6 definitely has the looks for that price tag. It’s the first Kia to step away from what has become a trademark feature on the South Korean models lately: the Tiger Nose. Understandably so since the front end of the EV6 had to be streamlined and blocked out to make the car as aerodynamic as possible.

The front fascia is dominated by the headlights and their V-shaped LED daytime running lights, along with the noticeable creases on the hood. The nose is very slanted and the hood is rather big, making the whole fron- end of the car seem like it’s somehow an arrowhead pointing down. Round the back, you can’t help but notice the lightbar spreading from side to side and a somewhat familiar design, if you’ve ever seen an Aston Martin DBX.

In the metal, the EV6 feels a lot bigger than it does in the pictures. The proportions of the car make it seem smaller than it actually is. It’s nearly 1.9-meters wide and 4.7 meters long, making it an easy crossover, not a sporty hatchback as you might’ve thought at first.

It’s the length that takes you by surprise the most. Thanks to the modular, electric platform it is built on, the EV6 has its wheels positioned towards the extremities of the car’s body, offering an ample wheelbase of 2.9-meters. That’s along the lines of what a 5 Series will get you, but with a lot more room inside.

Step inside and you’ll notice that there’s ample room for just about anything, with one exception: headroom. For some reason, the Kia designers decided to somehow flatten the greenhouse of the EV6. Even though it’s just 1.550 millimeters tall, its ground clearance of 160 millimeters somehow squishes the proportions of the car. From the outside you may miss it. Sure, the keen-eyed will notice the small windows, but you really take it in once you step inside.

Up front and in the back, the headroom is rather limited, if you’re over 6-ft tall. That’s surprising, to say the least. Luckily, there’s ample knee room and those in the back can recline their seats, to get a bit more headroom. If you’re on the driver’s seat though and you’re tall, you might be looking at the sun visor most of the time while driving.

The floor is flat though and favors using it to the max. Up front, the center armrest has a floating design and plenty of storage spaces for everything you could imagine. There are also no less than four charging outlets (including the 12V socket) and you could probably shove a small backpack in the storage space under the armrest.

Plenty Of Tech And Good Quality Materials

As for the materials used, the perceived quality in this car will vary depending on the way you spec it. Our tester was a GT-Line model with all the bells and whistles. Those included perforated leather and a soft-touch plastic on the dash and center armrest. The door panels also feature soft-touch plastics on the top half and a cheaper alternative towards the bottom. The dashboard is where things become even more interesting. That’s because it is dominated by two 12.3-inch screens that come as standard on all EV6 models. They are, as you might be suspecting, used as an instrument cluster and infotainment system. Both have great graphics, high resolutions and work flawlessly. You get Android Auto and Apple Carplay as standard.

Inside the right-side screen you’ll find a menu for the electric gremlins under the sheet metal, letting you know that there’s a massive battery hidden in the floor along with one or two electric motors powering the car.

Depending on what you choose, the EV6 can be had in a number of guises. There are two rear-wheel drive versions and two all-wheel drive alternatives, the latter coming with a dual-motor setup, one for each axle. You can also choose from two different battery sizes: 58 kWh and 77 kWh. Our tester was the RWD Long Range version. That means it had one electric motor, on the rear axle, good for 228 HP and 350 Nm of torque, quenching its thirst for electrons from a 77-kWh battery.

310 Miles on EPA Rating

According to the EPA, this version of the EV6 should have a range of 310 miles on a single charge (500 kilometers), which is incredibly impressive. If you do the math, it will add up to 4 miles/kWh. However, real life scenarios will differ and really put this claim to the test. During my time with the car, the results were wildly different but there were also some elements working against the EV6.

As we all know, electric cars really don’t fare well in cold weather. Studies have shown that the range in the cold can drop by 10 to 40%, or even more. Unfortunately for me, while I had the car for testing purposes, the exterior temperature didn’t go over 5 degrees Celsius. Most of the time, they were actually negative, around -2 degrees. Furthermore, the car was wearing winter tires and 20” wheels, which are known to be less efficient that the 19” ones on which WLTP and EPA tests are carried out.

That said, the overall energy consumption recorded by the car was around 21 kWh/100 km covered. Around town, the range was about 370 kilometers while on the highway, at an average speed of 130 km/h, that range dropped to around 300 kilometers. I should mention that I did not cut any creature comforts either, keeping the AC at 21 degrees Celsius and using only Comfort mode at all times. Eco or ECO+ modes might’ve helped but I wasn’t chasing the best possible result but more along the lines of a worst-case scenario. It’s better to arrive at a charger with more range than you expected than the other way around.

Speaking of which, the EV6 does have a massive plus on its side when it comes to charging: the 800V architecture. That means that it can take up more power from the charger than most of its rivals, the maximum being 350 kW. If you can find a charger that powerful, you should replenish your battery (up to 80%) in some 18 minutes. Shockingly fast!

The problem is, such powerful chargers are scarce and you rarely come across one. Most of the DC CCS chargers are 50 kW or 75 kW units and that means the charging process will take a lot longer. During my time with the car, I used a 75 kW charger twice, getting the battery from 40% to 80% on both occasions in about 20 minutes.

Driving Experience

Once charged up, you can set off to see how this car drives and it’s not bad at all. Kia says it was developed to deliver a sportier ride than its Hyundai Ioniq 5 brother and, even though I didn’t get to drive that car yet, the EV6 felt rather well damped and planted on the road.

The suspension is one of the highlights, absorbing bumps and imperfections rather well. That’s one of the faults that many electric cars have to this day, especially those developed on platforms that were initially designed for ICE models. The added weight of the batteries makes the ride harsh and unsettled. That was not the case with the EV6 and you could tell it was created from the ground up to be electric. The dampening was perfectly set up, and the car keeps its composure in most situations, remaining quiet over uneven surfaces too.

Don’t think of it as a sports car though, at least not in this Long Range, RWD guise. Sure, you can get the back to slide out as the instant torque will spin up the rear wheels, but we’re still talking about a car that weighs 2 tons and has just 228 HP. Therefore, the 0-100 km/h sprint takes 7.3 seconds and the top speed is limited to 185 km/h.

Even so, in Sport mode, the EV6 feels lively. The steering is direct but lacks feedback, but the rear end is bursting at the seams with torque, every time you even look in the direction of the go-faster pedal. The weight is well distributed over both axles and, even though it doesn’t have adaptive dampers, the car’s weight is kept well under control. The ride is a bit on the harsher side of things but I wouldn’t necessarily call it stiff.

And while driving it fast definitely will get your heartbeat going, it’s when you relax behind the wheel that you actually get to enjoy the EV6. The new-age EV comes with a lot of tech on-board to help you out, from adaptive regenerative braking (which works wonderful) to driving aides of all sorts. You can get a steering assistant, highway driving assistant and you’re kept safe at all times by the blind-spot monitoring system that uses the cameras in the side mirrors to warn you if there’s anything behind you. Once you turn on the blinker, a live feed from the cameras pops up un your dash.

The highway assistant isn’t bad either. It will actually help you switch lanes. Once you turn the adaptive cruise control on, along with the lane keeping assistant, the HDA will be on too. Therefore, once you signal a lane switch, the car will actually turn for you ever so slightly. You’ll still be better off doing it yourself, but it’s a nice gesture from Kia to include this system in the mix.

Another nice bit of tech the EV6 has is Vehicle to Load. This technology is considered a sort of essential kit by many car makers in the industry. That’s because it allows the car to feed energy into the grid, not just the other way around. In the future, when electric cars will be dominating the scene, this tech could help stabilize grids when they are under heavy stress. Furthermore, you can also use this tech to power up various appliances or even another electric car, albeit only with up to 3.5 kW.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, the EV6 delivers on all fronts and then some. It’s a capable, comfortable and sometimes sporty car that has all the tech it needs to become a best-seller. It is, without a doubt, one of the best electric cars out there today, faults included. The only issue some people will find with it will be the price and that’s only because this is a Kia. Overall though, it’s worth the money, if you’re interested in a cutting-edge electric model.

Whenever a new car comes out, be it electric or running on fossil fuels, Spanish magazine km77 is eager to put it through its paces in the dreaded moose test. If you haven’t heard of this evaluation, it’s essentially an evasive maneuver test to find out how well the vehicle can evade an obstacle that suddenly appears in front of the driver. The test has been around since the 1970s and became famous in the late 1990s when the original Mercedes A-Class was flipped over by Swedish car magazine Teknikens Värld together with the TV show Trafikmagasinet.

The folks over at km77 have managed to get a hold of the brand-new Kia EV6, specifically a rear-wheel-drive version in the GT-Line specification. The electric crossover came equipped with 20-inch wheels wrapped in Continental ContiPremiumContact tires measuring 225/45, which helped the EV ace the moose test many automakers are afraid of.

With the regenerative braking completely off, the Kia EV6 entered swerved through the cones impressively and took down only three of them. Mind you, the zero-emissions crossover entered the area at 80 km/h (50 mph), which is slightly higher than the usual entrance speed. The South Korean model responded accurately to the driver’s inputs and he says he felt safe throughout the procedure.

After turning on regenerative braking to level two (out of a maximum of four), the latest Kia EV excelled in the moose test without taking down any cones. The regenerative braking kicked in to slow the vehicle down like it happens when you take your foot off the accelerator pedal in a car equipped with a combustion engine.

Another test conducted by km77 with no regenerative braking ended with the Kia EV6 smashing just one cone thanks to the car’s sharp steering and the firm suspension setup. It also aced the slalom test without the ESC kicking in, which is quite remarkable as the vehicle was doing around 70 km/h (43 mph).

As a final note, chances are the range-topping GT version should perform even better thanks to a front-mounted electric motor giving the crossover an all-wheel-drive setup and therefore better traction on any surface.

The electric car market is going to be extremely interesting to watch because it can tighten the gap between premium and non-premium brands, especially in the minds of EV enthusiasts that are more concerned with specs that luxury. For instance, it’s typically highly unusual to compare an Audi and a KIA, as the former is an expensive premium brand and the latter is not (not an insult to KIA, it’s been making fantastic cars over the past few years). However, the upcoming KIA EV6 electric car should absolutely grab the attention of all EV buyers, even premium ones.

For starters, the KIA EV6 looks great. It’s sharp, sleek, futuristic looking, and has shades of Jaguar’s design language in it. I also love the fact that it’s a five-door hatchback with muscular rear wheel arches, a sexy upward-sweeping C-pillar, and an almost shooting brake-style silhouette.

The interior is also quite nice looking, especially in EV6 GT (the performance variant seen in these photos) spec. The seats are sporty and supportive looking, the dash is simplistic but handsome, and its tech isn’t too in-your-face. Nothing special but nothing offensive, either.

What’s impressive, though, is what lies beneath. The KIA EV6 is built on the brand’s new dedicated electric platform, which will house several different EV powertrains. Two battery packs will be available; a standard 58 kWh battery and a long-range 77.4 kWh battery. Both battery packs will be available with either a rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

The top-end KIA EV6 will come with dual electric motors and the 77.4 kWh battery pack, making 576 horsepower and getting from 0-62 mph (100 km/h) in 3.5 seconds. While the standard long-range model (big battery, rear-wheel drive), will be able to achieve 510 km (316 miles) of range.

All KIA EV6 models will be equipped with 800-volt architectures and can charged from 10-80 percent battery in just 18 minutes. If you’re in a pinch, 100 km of range can be put back in just 4.5 minutes, which is easily among the fastest on the market.

With its good looks, impressive specs, and rapid charging, the EV6 is going to cement itself as a very capable EV in the near future.

Crossovers aren’t the most exciting cars out there, and we could say the same thing about the vast majority of electric vehicles as well. However, Kia is looking to change our perception with the new EV6 and its sporty GT version. Packing dual electric motors, all-wheel drive, and an electronic limited-slip differential, this electric crossover aims to be a true performance car.

It certainly has the technical specs to support its sporty credentials, offering a generous total output of 577 horsepower and 740 Newton-meters (546 pound-feet) of torque. The electric punch grants the Kia EV6 GT with a sprint to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 3.5 seconds, en route to a top speed of 162 mph (260 km/h), which is mighty impressive for an electric car.

Available only with AWD and a 77.4-kWh battery pack, the GT will represent the crown jewel of the vast EV6 lineup. The family will also include a sporty-looking GT-Line available with either rear- or all-wheel drive and a choice between a smaller 58-kWh battery and the bigger 77.4-kWh pack. If efficiency is what you’re after, you will want the rear-wheel-drive model with the larger battery as that one will do in excess of 316 miles (510 kilometers) between cycles, according to the WLTP cycle.

As already seen in the mechanically related Hyundai Ioniq 5, the Kia EV6 benefits from fast-charging capabilities. It needs just 18 minutes to charge the battery from 10% to 80%, and it takes just four and a half minutes of charge to offer 62 miles (100 kilometers) of range. You can use the vehicle’s battery to charge external electrical devices as the EV6 benefits from bi-directional charging like its Hyundai cousin.

Being a crossover, it has to be practical. Thankfully, Kia has engineered the EV6 for the whole family, offering a cargo capacity of 520 liters that can be extended to 1,300 liters after folding the rear seats. There’s an additional storage compartment at the front and it offers an extra 52 liters for the single-motor RWD version or 20 liters for the dual-motor AWD model.

As expected, the EV6’s dimensions are similar to those of the Ioniq 5, although the Hyundai model has a longer wheelbase and sits slightly higher. Kia’s version is 4,680 mm (184 inches) long and features a wheelbase stretching at 2,900 mm (114 inches). It’s 1,880 mm (74 in) wide and 1,550 mm (61 in) tall, making it a compact-to-midsize electric crossover.

Kia is already accepting preorders in some parts of the world and will launch the EV6 electric crossover in the second half of the year, with production taking place in homeland South Korea.

Kia will host the full premiere of its EV6 on March 30 at 10 AM CET when we’re finally going to get acquainted with the electric crossover. The first images were published earlier this month, but the South Korean automaker refused to go into any details regarding the technical specifications of its dedicated EV.

While it’s mechanically related to the new Hyundai Ioniq 5, the EV6 has a significantly different exterior design, eschewing the angular appearance for a smoother, more rounded styling. The zero-emissions crossover ushers in a new design language from Kia, complemented by the company’s updated corporate badge.

The interior is also quite different than what you’ll find in the Ioniq 5, which goes to show Hyundai and Kia have put in a lot of time and effort to differentiate their electric SUVs. The same should hold true for the Genesis equivalent debuting before the end of the year, possibly with the GV60 moniker if recent reports are to be believed.

All three ride on the E-GMP platform and if the rumor mill is accurate, the Kia EV6 could be the sportiest of the trio. We’re hearing it will do 0 to 60 mph in about three and a half seconds, presumably for the high-performance GT variant allegedly featuring an impressive (for an electric car) top speed of more than 160 mph.

These will be the most technologically advanced EVs to come from Asia, at least when it comes to charging the battery. The EV6 is expected to need only 18 minutes to “fill up” the battery from 10% to 80% by supporting 350-kW charging while offering more than 300 miles on a full charge in the WLTP cycle. We’ll have to wait for the livestream to get exact numbers, but they’re looking quite promising so far.

The EV6 is only the first of several dedicated electric cars Kia will roll out in the years to come, EV1 through EV9, spanning across segments of the market. It makes sense to start off with an SUV, but fans of other body styles should rest assured as the automaker is looking to cover virtually all the bases in dawn of the electric era.

Kia published revealing images of the EV6 earlier this week, but without providing any juicy details regarding the technical specification. We’ll have to wait until the end of the month to discover the specs sheet as the South Korean brand has announced it will fully debut its first dedicated EV on March 30. Until then, we do have some preliminary specs to sink our teeth in, so here goes.

Riding on the same E-GMP platform as the Hyundai Ioniq 5, the new Kia EV6 will deliver supercar-like performance by hitting 60 mph from a standstill in just three and a half seconds. This impressive level of acceleration will likely be reserved for the more powerful all-wheel-drive version with dual electric motors.

As it is the case with the retro-chic Ioniq 5, Kia’s swanky new EV has been developed to accommodate fast charging. That translates to a battery recharge from 10% to 80% in 18 minutes and 62 miles (100 kilometers) after charging for only four minutes. With the battery pack fully charged, the zero-emissions crossover will travel in excess of 300 miles (483 kilometers) per WLTP.

We are hearing through the grapevine the range-topping EV6 – presumably carrying the “GT” suffix – will top out at somewhere in the region of 162 mph (260 km/h). That would make Kia’s electric crossover just as fast as a much more expensive Porsche Taycan Turbo S. Rumors also point the EV6 will have a bigger battery than the ones available for the Ioniq 5 (58 kWh and 72.6 kWh), but that remains to be seen.

A highly advanced level 2 autonomous driving system is also in the offing for the Kia EV6, allowing hands-free driving on highways. Kia has already announced a more sophisticated level 3 system will be rolled out from 2023 and it will be adopted by its dedicated electric vehicles (named from EV1 to EV9).

Check back on March 30 to discover all the oily bits about the EV6.

The Hyundai Motor Group is not wasting any time rolling out its E-GMP dedicated electric car platform as after the Ioniq 5 unveiled a few weeks ago, the Kia EV6 is now making its official debut. Featuring the company’s updated logo, the zero-emissions crossover ushers in a new design language for the South Korean brand, dubbed “Opposites United.”

Kia says it was inspired by the contrasts found in nature and humanity, but marketing speak aside, the EV6 is quite the looker. It looks like no other Kia model before it, featuring a massive clamshell hood as wide as the vehicle along with a gently sloped roofline reminiscent of coupes. Pop-out door handles have been installed, and we’re noticing the pillars have been blacked out to give the sensation of a “floating roof.”

To further separate it from Kia’s conventionally powered cars, the designers have given the new EV6 unique LED daytime running lights with a sequential light pattern as an integral component of the so-called Digital Tiger Face. It’s a reference to the corporate “tiger nose” front grille the automaker’s models equipped with combustion engines feature.

You can’t see it, but the EV6 has a completely flat floor to enhance airflow for better aerodynamic efficiency. What we can easily observe is the dramatically sweptback windshield, while the prominent character line running across the bottom of the doors before curving upwards towards the rear wheel arches makes the electric crossover seem longer than it is.

Moving at the back, the arched taillights meet in the middle courtesy of a full-width LED light bar making the EV6 appear wider and more imposing when viewed from behind. The roof-mounted spoiler is more than just for show as it serves a functional purpose by pushing air downwards to the integrated spoiler of the tailgate.

Kia has also published revealing images of the cabin, which much like the exterior, is significantly different from the Hyundai Ioniq 5’s even though the two ride on the same E-GMP platform. We do notice some similarities, such as the side-by-side fully digital screens and the continuous air vent design. Below the touchscreen of the infotainment system are the climate controls, which consist of touch-sensitive buttons providing haptic feedback.

The lower center console integrating the start/stop button and some other controls has a floating effect and there’s a dedicated storage area right below it, complete with dual USB charging ports. The two-spoke design bearing Kia’s new logo further separates the EV6’s interior from other models, as do the slim seats upholstered using fabrics made from recycled plastics.

The full debut is scheduled to take place before the end of the month during a dedicated online event, and while Kia isn’t sharing any technical specifications today, we do have some preliminary info previously announced by the company. Expect impressive performance as the EV6 will do 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 3.5 seconds, presumably for the range-topping version with dual electric motors and all-wheel drive.

Much like the Hyundai Ioniq 5, the Kia EV6 supports ultra-fast charging, with 62 miles (100 kilometers) of range after just four minutes of charging. From 10% to 80%, the battery can be replenished in 18 minutes, while a full charge will be enough for a range of more than 300 miles (483 kilometers) in the WLTP cycle.

By benefitting from a platform exclusively engineered for EVs, it means the Kia EV6 will have a completely flat floor, short overhangs, optimized weight distribution, and a low center of gravity by mounting the battery low. The cheaper versions will likely make do with a single electric motor mounted at the back for a RWD setup, and there’s a good chance buyers will get to pick from at least two battery sizes.

Following its world premiere within the next two weeks, the Kia EV6 will go on sale this summer. It’s widely believed Hyundai Motor Group’s luxury brand Genesis is putting the finishing touches on an electric crossover based on the same E-GMP platform. The official reveal could take place before the end of the year and the vehicle is likely going to be called GV60.

All three Korean brands are preparing a wide array of EVs to be offered in various shapes, with crossovers taking priority since the segment is still very much booming. Sedans, hatchbacks, minivans, and even sports cars are in the offing, allowing Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis to cover the most important segments of the market while the automotive industry gradually switches to purely electric propulsion.

When Kia teased the EV6 earlier this week, it only mentioned the company’s first dedicated electric vehicle would debut in the first quarter of the year. With Q1 ending on March 31, it means we’ll only have to wait a few more weeks to see the mysterious EV in full. We now have an exact date when the model will debut as the company took to Twitter to announce the premiere is scheduled for next Monday, March 15.

While the EV6 will take the shape of a midsize crossover in the same vein as the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia calls it a “fully electric family sports coupe.” The South Korean brand goes on to mention it will be “built using state of the art technology that’s our cleanest, most dynamic and most energetic car to date.” Interestingly, the March 15 reveal specifically mentions “the full design,” which could be Kia’s way of saying we will have to wait a bit more for the technical specifications.

The specs sheet is partially known already, with Kia previously saying the EV6 will have enough battery juice for more than 300 miles (483 kilometers) of range in the more realistic WLTP cycle. By featuring support for ultra-fast charging, just four minutes of charge will provide 62 miles (100 kilometers) of range. Replenishing the battery from 10% to 80% is going to take only 18 minutes.

The only performance stat we have at the moment of writing is the 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) run in three and a half seconds. By riding on the E-GMP platform designed from day one only for EVs, it will have the battery mounted down low for optimal weight distribution as well as a lower center of gravity, which should help sharpen up handling.

An all-wheel-drive variant has been confirmed already, with one electric motor driving the rear axle while another e-motor will power the front wheels. If it’s anything like the Ioniq 5, the new Kia EV6 will also be sold in a lesser specification with a single electric motor for a rear-wheel-drive base trim level.

As with other models, the new electric crossover (codenamed “CV”) will offer that peace of mind provided by Kia’s industry-leading seven-year warranty.

Kia’s first dedicated EV is almost here, but first, several teaser images have been released to ease the wait ahead of a premiere scheduled to take place in the first quarter of the year. An electric crossover riding on the E-GMP platform, the EV6 will take after the Imagine concept from 2019 in terms of styling and will share many of the bits and pieces with the recently unveiled Hyundai Ioniq 5.

The adjacent shadowy images and videos do reveal quite a few details, including the impressively short overhangs and sequential lights that have a special animation when you unlock or lock the doors. The EV6 is Kia’s first electric car to embrace the newest design language, and we can already tell it looks substantially different than previous EVs or combustion engine-powered cars of the South Korean brand.

From the muscular wheel arches and fastback-like roofline to the short, bulging hood and intricate LED lights, the Kia EV6 will be an interesting appearance in the electric car market. Backing up that fresh appearance will be some impressive technical specifications, including a 0-60 mph run in 3.5 seconds and more than 300 miles (483 km) of WLTP-certified range.

As already seen in the Ioniq 5, the Kia EV6 will need a mere 18 minutes to “fill up” its battery pack from 10% to 80%. Only four minutes of ultra-fast charging are going to be enough for 62 miles (100 kilometers) of range. Much like its Hyundai counterpart, the new electric crossover will support bi-directional charging, meaning you’ll be able to use the battery juice to power external devices.

Images of the interior cabin have not been provided, but by being developed from day one as an EV, it means the Kia EV6 will have a flat-floor design to maximize interior space. If it’s anything like the Ioniq 5, it should also have a massive wheelbase for a vehicle of this size, which should translate into heaps of legroom for passengers sitting in the back.

Following its world reveal in Q1 2021, the Kia EV6 will go on sale this summer. It’s the first of several dedicated electric cars from the brand, ranging from an entry-level EV1 to a flagship EV9. The aforementioned E-GMP platform will give birth to at least one more zero-emissions vehicle this year as luxury brand Genesis is expected to introduce the GV60 crossover.

Kia is just getting started with its EV onslaught as no fewer than six additional models without a combustion engine are scheduled to hit the market before 2027. On the list are a small city car, a long sedan, a bigger SUV, and even a sports car, while an electric minivan is also in the works. All will arrive after the EV6 and will be complemented by several other electric cars based on platforms developed for models equipped with traditional powertrains.

It’s all part of a greater plan to hit annual EV sales of about 880,000 by the end of the decade, which would represent more than half of Kia’s ambitious sales target to deliver 1.6 million hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and EVs each year by 2030.
