At long last, Volkswagen is giving people what they want – more power. The ID.4 was unveiled last year with a single electric motor mounted at the back, delivering 201 hp. Adding a front-mounted motor into the mix, the new GTX takes the combined output to just under 300 hp. If you want an exact number, it’s 220 kilowatts or 295 hp.

By installing a front electric motor, VW has also given the ID.4 a much-needed AWD system to better cope with slippery surfaces. The electric SUV primarily works in RWD mode to boost efficiency, but once the sensors and computers detect a lack of traction, the new e-motor at the front is automatically turned on. The same thing happens when the vehicle detects the driver needs more power to drive the GTX in a sporty manner.

You can imagine adding a front motor has drastically improved performance. The sprint from a standstill to 62 mph (100 km/h) now takes 6.2 seconds or 2.3 seconds less than before. Going from 0 to 37 mph (60 km/h) is a task completed in 3.2 seconds, thus making the GTX quite zippy in daily driving. The dual-motor AWD setup has had a positive impact on top speed as well, rising to 112 mph (180 km/h), which is actually electronically governed.

It gets the same 77-kWh battery as the normal model, but the WLTP-certified range is down to 480 kilometers (298 miles) since the GTX is a heavier vehicle after adding the front electric motor.

A closer look at the images reveals the hotter GTX is still stuck with drum brakes at the rear, hiding behind standard 20-inch wheels or the optional 21-inch set. Going for the Sports package will bring the spicy ID.4 closer to the road by 0.6 inches (15 millimeters) for better handling, while adjustable shocks can also be had at an additional cost.

You won’t have to pay extra for those nifty matrix LED headlights at the front as they’re standard, much like the GTX-reserved trio of lights in the front bumper. At the back, the performance-oriented SUV can be visually distinguished by its 3D-effect taillights lending it a high-tech look akin to some of the fancier Audi models.

Inside, the red ambient lighting and stitching create a visual connection with Volkswagen’s traditional GTI models. The standard 10-inch touchscreen can be optionally replaced by a bigger 12-inch setup, while the head-up display with augmented reality tech also costs extra. Speaking of pricing, the ID.4 GTX starts at €50,415 at home in Germany.

Initially launching in Europe this summer, the more exciting ID.4 is expected to arrive in the United States for the 2022 model year.

Volkswagen is adding performance pizzazz to its ID portfolio of electric vehicles by introducing a faster and more powerful version of the ID.4. The compact SUV will be revealed tomorrow in a “GTX” version to lead the way for a family of exciting EVs planned by the Wolfsburg brand. A trio of teaser clips eases the wait until the big debut scheduled for April 28 at 5 PM CEST.

Unlike the regular ID.4 available with a single electric motor and rear-wheel drive, the hotter GTX will add a front-mounted motor to enable an AWD setup. While the normal variant of the electric SUV offers 204 horsepower, we’re hearing its performance-oriented sibling will pack roughly 300 hp. It should be enough punch for a 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) sprint in just 6.2 seconds.

The adjacent teasers give us an idea regarding what to expect from the design as VW is trying to make the ID.4 GTX look a bit more aggressive than the standard model. Red accents suggest the performance SUV will get GTI-like accents inside and out. Slightly sportier styling is expected, along with model-exclusive alloy wheel designs and the compulsory “GTX” badging.

It’s too soon to say whether the ID.4 GTX will be followed by an equivalent ID.3 GTX to serve as an electric hot hatch, but we do know this dual-motor setup will find its way in another electric vehicle from Volkswagen. We’re talking about the three-row ID.6 SUV revealed last week at Auto Shanghai for the Chinese market.

Also coming this year will be an ID.5 to serve as a coupe-styled alternative of the ID.4 while retaining the rear doors. Essentially, it will have a heavily sloped roofline and a more dramatic rear-end styling while possibly offering a GTX version as well. A Skoda equivalent is also planned for a release later this year as the Enyaq iV Coupe and should have largely the same powertrain but in a more practical package.

Meanwhile, expect the ID.4 GTX to cost significantly more than the single-motor, RWD model and take a hit in terms of efficiency. Logic tells us the range between charges will go down due to the increased weight commanded by the extra hardware, but that’s the price to pay for having a performance-oriented electric SUV. The new GTX variant could also feature a more generous list of standard equipment to justify the price hike.

Volkswagen ID.4 GTX and ID.5 electric SUVs confirmed for 2021 reveal https://evglobe.com/2021/01/25/vw-id4-gtx-id5-coming-2021/ https://evglobe.com/2021/01/25/vw-id4-gtx-id5-coming-2021/#comments Mon, 25 Jan 2021 20:51:26 +0000 https://evglobe.com/?p=3901 Volkswagen has issued a press release about how it not only met its CO2 fleet targets in 2020, but it actually dropped below the legal target. Volkswagen has issued a press release about how it not only met its CO2 fleet targets in 2020, but it actually dropped below the legal target. That’s not particularly exciting, but an interesting phrase caught our attention – “In the current fiscal year, Volkswagen will expand its offerings based on the modular electric drive matrix (MEB): This way, the fully electric models ID.4, ID.4 GTX and ID.5 will gradually be launched in international markets.”

To our knowledge, this is the first official confirmation from VW about introducing the ID.4 GTX and ID.5 in 2021. We knew these were on their way, but we finally have the news straight from the horse’s mouth. Details about the electric SUVs were not disclosed by the German automaker, although we have a pretty good understanding of what to expect from the two MEB-based EVs.

Both will obviously be closely related to the ID.4 pictured here, but with some important differences. The GTX will serve as the performance version by utilizing dual electric motors to enable an all-wheel-drive system. It’s said to have a combined output of 302 horsepower and 339 pound-feet (460 Newton-meters) of torque. The electric punch will be good for a 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) sprint in 6.2 seconds and a maximum speed of 112 mph (180 km/h).

The ID.4 GTX will be visually distinguishable from the standard model thanks to redesigned front and rear bumpers as well as bespoke alloy wheels and some changes inside the cabin. VW’s engineers will lower the ride height and work on the chassis to make the GTX more fun to drive, also helped by the stickier tires and other revisions.

As far as the ID.5 is concerned, it will essentially be a coupe take on the ID.4 from which it will inherit the hardware. This one too is expected to spawn a GTX variant with the same dual-motor AWD setup, but it will likely come at a higher price as coupe-SUVs are typically more expensive than the conventionally styled models they’re based upon.

Further down the line, Volkswagen’s electric portfolio will grow with the addition of an ID.6 sedan and wagon combining the footprint of a Passat with the interior space of a Phaeton. An ID.7 is on the agenda as well, serving as the biggest model to ride on the MEB platform and molded after the ID Buzz electric minivan concept.
