Lamborghini EV Coming In 2028 Will Be A Four-Seat Crossover, Urus EV To Follow

It was back in May 2021 when Lamborghini announced an expansion of its portfolio with the addition of a fourth model line bound to be purely electric. Initially, the folks from Sant’Agata Bolognese said it would arrive in the second half of the decade, but CEO Stephan Winkelmann revealed this week it will debut in 2028.

Rumors of a 2+2 Lamborghini have been swirling around the Internet for a couple of years, and Autocar has now learned from the firm’s top brass the gossip is true: “It’s a completely new car; the fourth model. It’s a segment we haven’t been in for decades, if we speak about a 2+2 or four-seater, maybe also high from the ground, with more ground clearance.

The last part of his statement clearly suggests it will be something along the lines of a crossover, while the 2+2 layout indicates there will be limited legroom for rear passengers. Discontinued at the end of the 1970s, the Urraco was Lamborghini’s last sports car to have a 2+2 interior configuration. Aside from being taller, its spiritual successor will likely have short overhangs thanks to a dedicated electric platform.

The exotic Italian brand will commence the development of its first-ever EV later this year and is already planning ahead for a second electric model. The direct replacement for the current Urus “Super SUV” will eschew the combustion engine to adopt a zero-emission powertrain. That one too will be a completely new vehicle with nothing shared with the V8-powered model available today.

Autocar claims the Urus EV is earmarked for a 2029 release and will be bigger than the aforementioned 2+2 model. Meanwhile, Lamborghini will launch a plug-in hybrid variant of the first generation within the next two years. In addition, the Aventador and Huracan replacements will be hybridized as well as the plan is to halve CO2 emissions by 2025.
