Volkswagen is finally introducing an all-wheel-drive version of its ID.4 compact SUV in Europe where the company is reviving the “GTX” badge used in the past for sporty versions of the Scirocco, Golf, and Jetta. Surprisingly, the North American version will not carry over those three letters. Instead, it will go by the simple name of ID.4 AWD Pro, with the suffix representing the trim level.
The dual-motor model is already in VW USA’s configurator and it commands a $3,680 premium over the base rear-wheel-drive ID.4 equipped with a single electric motor mounted at the back. While the RWD version will be available from summer, those looking to get behind the wheel of the AWD model will have to wait until October at the earliest.
Upgrading to the ID.4 AWD Pro means you’ll also be getting a tow hitch for your money’s worth, with VW mentioning the beefier version of its electric SUV has a towing capacity with braked trailer of 2,700 pounds. The automaker knows customers shopping for the all-wheel-drive model are likely to live in colder climates, which is why a heated windshield is also included as standard equipment.
Unlike the European-spec ID.4 GTX, its North American sibling will not be available with the Dynamic Chassis Control. DCC consists of electronically adjustable adaptive dampers, which sadly the US-spec vehicle is not getting. The silver lining is R&D board member, Thomas Ulbrich, told Motor Trend the version coming stateside is being tuned to match the dynamics of its Euro cousin.
As a refresher, the GTX (and by extension the ID.4 AWD) offers 295 horsepower from its pair of electric motors. It does 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 6.2 seconds and hits an electronically limited top speed of 112 mph. The single-motor ID.4 needs an additional 2.3 seconds for the sprint and has a lower 99-mph maximum velocity.
In terms of pricing, the ID.4 AWD Pro will kick off at $45,170 while the better-equipped ID.4 AWD Pro S starts at $49,370.
