Genesis took its sweet time announcing plans to enter Europe as it wasn’t until last year when Hyundai’s luxury division revealed it would enter the Old Continent. It’s making up for the lost time by bringing nearly all of its products, save for the flagship G90 fullsize sedan. In addition, the stunning G70 Shooting Brake wagon is a Euro-only affair. And now, the GV60 has been confirmed.

Originally introduced in late September 2021, the electric crossover is a sister model of the mainstream Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6. It rides on the same dedicated E-GMP electric car platform and will serve as Genesis’ first EV in Europe. It’s scheduled to go on sale later this year and will be offered in three different versions: Premium, Sport, and Sport Plus.

The most frugal of them all will be able to cover 321 miles (517 kilometers), but the company isn’t saying whether the number is based on the WLTP cycle or it represents the firm’s own estimation.

The entry-level GV60 Premium will make do with a single electric motor producing 168 kilowatts sent to the rear wheels. The midlevel Sport is going to feature all-wheel drive courtesy of 168 kW + 74 kW motors, while the flagship Sport Plus has a pair of 160-kW motors. In addition, the most athletic of the bunch adds a tail-happy drift mode. Not only that, but there’s also a boost mode to unlock an extra 20 kW + 20 kW for 10 seconds.

All three trim levels will share a standard 12.3-inch infotainment system with wireless charging. At an additional cost, buyers will be able to order the Genesis GV60 in Europe with a panoramic sunroof, side cameras (instead of conventional glass mirrors), a Bang & Olufsen audio system, and heated seats.

The GV60 will be followed by two additional EVs by the end of 2022. Genesis isn’t willing to reveal their names just yet, but they’re probably the already revealed Electrified GV70 and Electrified G80. These two are not bespoke EVs since they’re based on the conventionally powered models.

After the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6, then came the Genesis GV60 as the more luxurious version of the trio. The dedicated electric crossover from South Korea was introduced in the second half of August when fully revealing images were published, but without any information regarding the technical specifications.

Come September 29, Genesis will disclose all the juicy details about its first bespoke EV, likely along with a more comprehensive photo gallery showing the GV60 inside and out. For the time being, we only know it utilizes the same E-GMP platform as its mainstream siblings from Hyundai and Kia, but with some cutting-edge tech exclusive to this model.

The GV60 has been confirmed to feature face detection as a neat way to open and close the doors, while the fingerprint detection system inside the cabin will allow the driver to start the electric button at the literal touch of a surface. A highly unusual rotating ball, officially known as the Crystal Sphere, will act as the gear selector, and we’re fairly certain Genesis has a few more aces up its sleeve for the premiere scheduled this Wednesday.

While technical specifications remain shrouded in mystery, we strongly believe the entry-level model will feature an electric motor mounted at the back for a rear-wheel-drive layout. More expensive trims levels will enable an AWD setup courtesy of an electric motor installed at the front axle. Reports state the GV60 won’t be as powerful as the 577-hp EV6 GT, but that remains to be seen.

Speaking of rumors, it is believed the Genesis GV60 has been engineered to support wireless charging and that the system will initially be available for a pilot program that will be conducted at home in South Korea. It could eventually be offered to all owners, and eliminate the hassle of having to use wires. That said, it goes without saying the charging power won’t be nearly as good as it is for E-GMP-based models, which can have their batteries recharged at up to 350 kW.

Genesis says full details will be disclosed this Wednesday, September 9, at 5 PM California time.

As cars gradually become rolling computers, yours truly rhetorically asks: What will they think of next? Face recognition technology is how Genesis would answer this question. Yes, the all-electric GV60 crossover is the first production model from Hyundai’s luxury division to boast something called “Face Connect.”

How does it work? The high-tech system relies on a near-infrared camera embedded into the B-pillar, specifically in the rear door. It recognizes faces “under any circumstances,” even at night or during a cloudy day. Once a pre-registered face is detected, the GV60’s doors lock or unlock without the owner having to use the smart key.

Some would argue such a feature is not necessary considering most cars already have a handsfree functionality, therefore making face recognition a bit redundant. There’s a pretty good chance it will end up as a function that customers will use a few times in the first months of ownership before sticking to the traditional way of locking and unlocking the vehicle.

That said, those who want the latest technologies available will appreciate the Face Connect system. There is one important benefit to having face recognition as it liberates the driver from having to carry the GV60’s keys at all times. It can even be left inside the vehicle and Face Connect will still work, making it ideal to use when heading to a location for various outdoor activities. Going running or swimming will remove the hassle of having to carry the key in your pocket.

According to Genesis, Face Connect can register up to two faces for a vehicle, and profiles can be created using the GV60’s built-in voice assistant. These can be deleted at any time and are safely stored inside the crossover without any security risks. The EV also benefits from a fingerprint authentication system, allowing owners to start the vehicle based on pre-registered biometric information to once again remove the need for a regular key.

With the GV60’s launch, Genesis is expanding its over-the-air software updates to support revisions to the suspension, brakes, steering wheel, and even airbags. These are on top of already available OTA updates for the navigation system, digital instrument cluster, head-up display, and infotainment.

Additional models will benefit from all these upgrades in due course, with the electric crossover leading the way.

It was only a few days ago when Genesis unveiled the GV60 and now the dedicated EV is making the headlines once again. This time around, gone is the rather eccentric neon green paint featured in the press images as a near-production prototype has been caught in a parking lot in South Korea wearing a less in-your-face paint: black.

It certainly seems less flashy than the electric crossover presented by Genesis, and dare we say it’s all for the better. This one too has the side cameras, but bear in mind these are not legal in many parts of the world, meaning most GV60s will have conventional side mirrors. The fancy wheels featuring an intricate spoke design are the same as seen in the official images, lending the company’s first bespoke electric car a special look.

As far as the interior is concerned, the prototype had the same navy-blue theme with contrasting neon green accents as the GV60 presented by Hyundai’s luxury division. Some would argue the difference between the subtle exterior and striking interior are a bit too much, but we’re glad Genesis is bold enough to offer such great diversity to cater to wider customer tastes.

While technical specifications have yet to be revealed, it’s easy to see the GV60 looks dramatically different than the mechanically related Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6. It will ride on the same E-GMP platform, potentially bringing rear- and all-wheel-drive configurations with single- and dual-motor versions, respectively.

Many have criticized the electric crossover’s design, but we think some of the complaints had to do with Genesis’ unusual paint color choice. The styling is undoubtedly interesting, signaling a new wave of EVs, and we think people will gradually get used to the GV60’s spectacular appearance after seeing it in the real world instead of images and videos.

The full debut is scheduled to take place in the coming weeks when we’ll get to learn how Genesis has managed to differentiate the GV60 from its mainstream cousins beyond giving it new clothing.

Following the unveiling of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 earlier this year, Genesis is introducing its own dedicated electric crossover based on the same E-GMP platform. It looks vastly different than its mainstream siblings as the zero-emissions SUV is going for the coupe-like look with a heavily sloped roofline.

It rides on some snazzy wheels and benefits from pop-out electronic door handles to boost the vehicle’s aerodynamic efficiency and enable a cleaner side profile at the same time. Speaking of which, the silhouette has been made less cluttered by replacing the bulky side mirror caps with tiny cameras. However, those are only legal in certain countries, so in reality, the Genesis GV60 will have traditional mirrors in most markets.

Those who are familiar with Genesis’ “Two Lines” design motif will likely immediately notice the now familiar split headlights and taillights shared with the company’s latest models. The corporate Crest grille has been positioned remarkably low, while the new emblem adorning the frunk has been slimmed down by nearly 80% compared to the badges the other models wear.

Much like the Ioniq 5 and EV6, the new GV60 benefits from a clamshell hood, meaning it extends over the front fenders to cut down on panel gaps and give the electric SUV a more cohesive appearance when viewed from the front. At the back, the tailgate incorporates a large black spoiler hosting a wide LED bar serving as the third brake light.

Stepping inside the cabin, there’s a sense of familiarity as the first bespoke EV from Genesis gets side-by-side screens to echo the equivalent Hyundai and Kia models. The predominantly blue theme is a bold choice for sure, and it’s combined with contrasting neon green accents to match the exterior shade. The splashy hue is also noticeable on the Boost button on the steering wheel, which likely delivers a temporary horsepower bump upon activation.

Mounted on the door cards, specifically near the base of the A-pillars, are the dual screens showing footage captured by the exterior cameras. It goes without saying those displays won’t be there on the Genesis GV60 fitted with traditional side mirrors. Elsewhere, there are still separate controls for the climate settings thanks to physical buttons flanking a small screen providing all the relevant HVAC info.

Genesis is only revealing images and design details for the time being, which means we’ll have to wait a few more weeks to learn about the technical specifications. That being said, the GV60 recently received the stamp of approval in South Korea’s emission and noise certification test, which revealed some of the specs.

The rear-wheel-drive variant with a single motor mounted at the back will offer 226 horsepower while the dual-motor model with AWD is going to pack a healthy 430 hp. There’s no sign just yet of the 577-horsepower output offered by the Kia EV6 GT, but it could come at a later date since it would make sense for the luxury model of the trio to offer the best hardware available.

After Hyundai introduced the Ioniq 5 and Kia the EV6 earlier this year, all eyes are now on Genesis to present its electric crossover riding on the same E-GMP platform developed exclusively for EVs. The official reveal has to be around the corner since the GV60 has been spotted testing repeatedly in recent months and rumors are strongly suggesting it will be launched in the United States before year’s end.

In the meantime, the zero-emissions crossover has passed South Korea’s emission and noise certification test, which might not sound newsworthy, but this mandatory process reveals some juicy tidbits. For example, we now officially know it’s going to be called GV60 as plenty of reports have stated, and we also get to find out it will be available in both single- and dual-motor configurations.

The folks over at The Korean Car Blog managed to get a hold of the precious documents, revealing the Genesis GV60 will come in a base version with a rear-mounted electric motor producing 229 horsepower. That’s technically 229 PS, which works out to a slightly lower 226 hp or the same output you get in one of the EV6 variants.

Codenamed JW, the electric crossover will be available with AWD by adding an electric motor at the front axle. In this beefier setup, it’s going to have a combined output of 436 PS thanks to a pair of 218 PS e-motors mounted at the front and rear axles. Doing the conversion to metric horsepower, it means the all-paw GV60 will offer 430 hp.

It’s unclear whether these will two will be the only flavors of the GV60 or Genesis has plans to diversify the lineup with additional derivatives. It would make sense for the crossover to get the same high-end powertrain as the 577-hp Kia EV6 GT considering the model will cost more than the equivalent Hyundai and Kia EVs since it’ll be billed as a true luxury vehicle.

As a final note, it’s worth mentioning the available specs refer to the Genesis GV60 set to be sold in its domestic market. That being said, it’s unlikely the international model will be significantly different, if at all.

It’s no secret that Genesis’ main target are the German automakes. Drive a new Genesis model and their closest comparisons are always either BMW or Audi in their respective segments. The Genesis G70 feels like it’s taking on the 3 Series directly, because it is. Which isn’t a surprise, considering the man behind Hyundai/Genesis’ R&D is none other than former BMW M Boss Albert Biermann. Now, it seems as if the Korean luxury brand is looking to tackle another BMW with its own car, but with a bit of a twist — the Genesis GV60 Electric.

Seen in some new spy photos and videos (which we don’t own but you can see here), we can see the upcoming Genesis GV60 Electric and it’s clearly designed to snag customers away from the BMW X4. It’s a coupe-like crossover, sized similar to the X4, and features a sharp, sporty design. The GV60 gets nice muscular wheel arches and a handsome interpretation of the GV70’s split taillight design. However, what will separate the GV60 from the X4 is its powertrain.

The Genesis GV60 Electric will be — you guessed it — electric. It’s going to be built on Hyundai Genesis’ new E-GMP all-electric architecture and will act as a sort of electrified version of the GV70, itself an already sporty little crossover.

There’s no word on battery or power but it’s likely that the Hyundai Ioniq 5’s setup could make its way into the GV60, at least as an entry-level offering. That would give it a 77 kWh battery pack, a single rear motor, and around 225 horsepower. The Ioniq 5 has a range of around 300 miles but the heavier GV60 would see less than that.

BMW doesn’t offer an EV in this segment yet. There’s the BMW iX3 but that’s only on sale in certain markets and is also a bit of an afterthought, built on the existing X3 chassis. The Genesis GV60 Electric will be a from-the-ground-up electric car, built on an electric chassis. It will offer a slick new design, with an all-electric powertrain, in a segment that’s extremely popular. The only other cars in the segment would be the Audi Q4 e-tron and Tesla Model Y. BMW might want to look at this segment for its next true EV, with all of this new competition coming out.

Genesis has already hopped on the EV bandwagon with the launch of the Electrified G80 that does away with the combustion engine. A completely bespoke electric vehicle will be out later this year as a more luxurious take on the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6. We’re talking about the GV60 (name not confirmed), which has been spotted undergoing final testing in Orange County, California.

Still heavily camouflaged, the near-production prototype showed the “Two Lines” motif with dual LED light bars for both the headlights and taillights. The Genesis GV60 test vehicle was riding on some of the most intricately designed alloy wheels we have ever seen, which are likely a pain to wash given the complexity of the spokes.

It would appear Hyundai’s luxury division is going for the fastback-esque rear design in the same vein as the Ford Mustang Mach-E. The GV60 seems to have a chunky spoiler on the liftgate along with the typically short front and rear overhangs you would expect from a dedicated EV. As a refresher, the crossover will ride on the E-GMP platform already being used by its equivalent Kia and Hyundai EVs.

Even though it’s almost fully disguised, we are getting the impression the GV60 is going to look substantially different than the angular Ioniq 5 and the sporty EV6. It should have roughly the same size and a massive wheelbase offering legroom we associate with combustion-engined crossovers from a segment above.

Dealers in the United States have already been informed the GV60 will arrive towards the end of the year, which can only mean an official reveal is likely going to take place in the following weeks. Codenamed JW, the all-electric crossover is expected to deliver more performance than the Ioniq 5 to justify the premium commanded by a luxury vehicle.

It remains to be seen whether Genesis will sell the zero-emissions model in a lesser rear-wheel-drive configuration with a single electric motor or it will offer the GV60 exclusively with a dual-motor, AWD setup. It’s not the only new EV the company is working on as the G70 is also getting an Electrified version, which might also debut before the end of 2021.

After Hyundai unveiled the Ioniq 5 and Kia the EV6, we are now gradually turning our attention towards the equivalent Genesis model. Allegedly called GV60, it will be the brand’s first dedicated electric vehicle, following the Electrified G80 unveiled earlier this month as a zero-emissions adaptation of the conventionally powered G80 sedan.

Sources close to Genesis cited by The Korean Car Blog have revealed the GV60 will break cover sometime in June. Codenamed “JW” and scheduled to hit dealers in the latter half of 2021, the new zero-emissions model will ride on the same e-GMP platform as the aforementioned models from mainstream brands Hyundai and Kia.

We’re hearing it will be a bit more special than the Ioniq 5 and EV6 not just in terms of comfort and refinement, but also in regards to performance. That sounds rather interesting considering Kia’s electric crossover already has a GT version (pictured below) with 577 horsepower and sprints to 62 mph (100 km/h) in three and a half seconds. Whether Genesis can top these numbers remains to be seen, but it’s a sign the dedicated EV platform has been developed with performance in mind.

There’s more to come on the electric front from Genesis as the Electrified G80 and GV60 will be followed by a GV70 crossover without a gasoline/diesel engine. Much like Hyundai and Kia, the South Korean luxury brand is planning an EV onslaught in the years to come as the automotive industry is gradually abandoning the internal combustion engine.

The GV60 will lead the way for dedicated EVs and will have a proprietary design that will follow Genesis’ “two lines” motif. Much like the EV6 and Ioniq 5 look nothing alike, we’re confident the GV60 is going to have an all-Genesis design even though the underpinnings will be largely the same.

Following its possible June premiere, the GV60 will allegedly go on sale in the United States by the end of the year.

The rumors were true – the GV60 will indeed serve as Genesis’ first foray into the electric vehicle segment. As we reported at the beginning of the month, a small crossover slotting underneath the conventional powered GV70 is going to serve as the first model from Hyundai’s luxury brand to eschew the combustion engine altogether.

The confirmation stems from an article published by Automotive News following discussions Genesis dealers had with the corporate side of the South Korean automaker. These talks took place on Wednesday at a National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) meeting during which Genesis National Dealer Advisory Council chairman, Peter Lanzavecchia, learned about the zero-emissions crossover.

Genesis confirmed the EV will carry the GV60 moniker and it will take the shape of a crossover rather than the city-oriented hatchback portrayed by the two-seater Mint concept during the 2019 Los Angeles Auto Show. Unsurprisingly, dealers were glad to hear about the switch from a hatchback to a crossover body style given the immense popularity of CUVs.

While dealers didn’t get to see the GV60, they were told the launch in North America is scheduled to take place towards the end of 2021. It likely means a world premiere will take place in the following months, with the South Korean market probably getting the electric crossover initially. The model is expected to ride on the same E-GMP platform as the upcoming Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia CV (not final name), which will be debuting on February 16 and late March, respectively.

The platform has been developed from the ground up for electric vehicles and promises to deliver more than 311 miles (500 kilometers) of range and support for fast-charging. According to preliminary specs, four minutes of charging will provide 62 miles (100 kilometers) of range. Both the Ioniq 5 and Kia CV will also be crossovers, with the latter promising supercar-like acceleration by hitting 62 mph (100 km/h) in just three seconds.

This new wave of EVs from the Hyundai Motor Group will deliver over-the-air updates, a massive head-up display (HUD) with augmented reality, and side cameras replacing the traditional mirrors. With Genesis being the luxury brand of the trio, it would make sense for the GV60 to offer all the high-end hardware developed for the E-GMP architecture.
