Electrification is transforming the automotive industry, and it’s creating a level playing field among automakers. As electric powertrains feel similar, it’s easier for a budget-friendly electric vehicle to provide a premium driving experience compared to a budget car with a gas engine. While Hyundai already produces great driving cars, their latest model, the Ioniq 5 N, could be a car to watch out for, even for premium sports car manufacturers such as BMW.

According to Car and Driver, the South Korean automaker is working on a high-performance version of the Ioniq 5. The Ioniq 5 N is expected to have some impressive specs, making it a potential competitor to the 576 horsepower KIA EV6 GT. C&D claims that the Ioniq 5 N will likely have around 600 horsepower from its dual electric motors. Although there are no official specs available yet, this is exciting news for those who are eagerly anticipating its release.

The Ioniq 5 N is camouflaged in snowy test mules, making it hard to visualize the car’s final design. However, it’s expected to have sportier features, such as wider fenders, a lower front bumper, a rear diffuser, a lower ride height, and a small rear spoiler. The car is said to look playful in the snow, drifting around and shooting white rooster tails in the air.

Hyundai brought C&D along to test the Ioniq 5 N prototype, and it seems to be a promising little performance EV. It features an electronically controlled limited-slip differential at the rear axle, which helps shift torque between the rear wheels, providing exceptional lateral performance. Most EV manufacturers avoid additional diffs as they put a damper on efficiency, but when it comes to high-performance cars, lateral performance is more important than a small efficiency bump.

Former BMW M boss Albert Biermann is largely responsible for where Hyundai is today. The new Ioniq 5 N is a testament to what Biermann brought from BMW to Hyundai, making it a genuine rival for the Bavarians. The Ioniq 5 N is something that BMW should absolutely be keeping an eye on. To see just how far Hyundai has come in terms of making genuinely fun performance cars, check out the prototype drive review from C&D.

Even though Hyundai introduced the Ioniq 5 in February 2021, the electric crossover is already receiving a significant update in Europe. While right now you can have the bespoke EV with a choice between either a 58- or 72.6-kWh battery, a bigger 77.4-kWh pack will be added later this year. If the battery’s capacity seems familiar, that’s because the Ioniq 5 sold in the United States already has it.

Another important change brought by the 2023 model year is the availability of side cameras to replace the traditional glass. The optional feature goes by the official name of Digital Side Mirrors (DSM) and has been available at home in South Korea since the Ioniq 5 was launched last year. It’s the first Hyundai in Europe to get this feature and aside from providing a clearer view of what’s behind, it also improves aerodynamic efficiency. It does so by reducing air resistance after replacing the bulky mirror caps with tiny cameras.

Since we’re on the subject of cameras, the Euro-spec Ioniq 5 is also gaining a Digital Center Mirror (DCM). The new piece of hardware is mounted below the crossover’s rear spoiler and will deliver an unobstructed, wide-angle view to diminish the risk of crashing into a car behind you. While the Digital Side Mirrors come with screens mounted on the door cards near the A-pillars, the Digital Center Mirror replaces the conventional center rearview mirror.

Another change coming to the 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 in Europe is the battery conditioning feature, which will automatically change the battery pack’s temperature on the go to guarantee the best charging conditions for when you arrive at the charging station. The system will prolong the charging performance of the battery, especially during the cold season. The EV turns on this feature the moment you enter a charging point in the navigation system.

For better comfort, Hyundai’s engineers have made tweaks to the Smart Frequency Dampers (SFD) function to optimize the response of both front and rear suspensions. The 2023 model year will also come along with the possibility to order unpainted black bumpers with black garnishes combined with the Projection LED lights.

Hyundai will have the revised Ioniq 5 on sale in Europe in the latter half of the year.

The Ioniq 5 was unveiled back in February and yet we’re already hearing Hyundai is working on an important update for its electric SUV. According to South Korean publication ET News, the maximum driving range will be increased by at least 10% and there are also plans to give the zero-emissions vehicle support for over-the-air updates.

The revised Ioniq 5 has apparently been shown already behind closed doors and is expected to be publicly unveiled as early as 2022 when it’s also scheduled to hit the market. How will they be able to squeeze out more range? It is believed the battery capacity will significantly grow from the current 72.6 kWh (usable) to 77.5 kWh for the optional long-range pack. That would mirror the version sold in the United States where the vehicle is offered with a larger battery compared to the international model.

The improvement will be possible by increasing the number of 2.4 kW battery modules from the current 30 to 32 to mirror the Kia EV6, which rides on the same E-GMP dedicated electric platform as the Ioniq 5 and the Genesis GV60. Changing the battery after only about a year on sale will likely upset early adopters unless Hyundai will find a way to push an over-the-air update and unlock more range as Volvo has been doing with the XC40 Recharge.

Speaking of OTA updates, ET News goes on to say software revision on the fly will be extended beyond the infotainment system. Hyundai is apparently planning to push new software to tweak the Ioniq 5’s suspension, driver assistance systems, and even the airbags, all without having to take the SUV to your local dealer. In its domestic market, Ioniq 5 owners – regardless of the trim level – will reportedly be allowed to transfer the battery’s energy back into the grid from 2022 through an OTA update for the vehicle-to-grid (V2G) function.

Aside from fiddling with the battery and launching additional OTA updates, Hyundai is said to be working on a sporty N version as the first electric offering from its N lineup of performance vehicles. The E-GMP platform has already demonstrated it can support a higher-spec application, with the Kia EV6 GT providing 577 horsepower from its dual electric motors.

The European New Car Assessment Programme published today the results from its latest crash tests, which included two EVs – the Ford Mustang Mach-E and the Hyundai Ioniq 5. The electric crossover with a pony car’s name managed to earn the full five-star rating whereas the gasoline-fueled sports car only got three when it was tested back in 2017. Needless to say, the two models have nothing in common except for the name and some design traits.

The Mustang Mach-E tested by Euro NCAP was a left-hand-drive example in the Titanium trim level and it achieved the following scores: 92% for adult occupant, 86% for child occupant, 69% for vulnerable road users, and 82% for safety assist. The organization praised the zero-emissions SUV for its deployable hood, center airbag, and a raft of advanced driver assistance systems.

As far as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is concerned, it also grabbed all five stars from Euro NCAP and posted the following scores: 88% for adult occupant, 86% for child occupant, 63% for vulnerable road users, and 88% for safety assist. It too has a central airbag, but it lacks the Mach-E’s active hood. In addition, the all-electric SUV from the Blue Oval features a side pelvis airbag.

It is also worth noting the South Korean electric SUV did not have car-to-car autonomous emergency braking (AEB), but that’s only because the particular car Euro NCAP tested, an Ioniq 5 GL in left-hand drive, lacked this feature. It’s optionally available when you order the Ioniq 5.

In case you haven’t heard, Euro NCAP is now complemented by Green NCAP, which is described as an “independent initiative which promotes the development of cars which are clean.” The reason why we are mentioning it is that the Ford Mustang Mach-E also grabbed five stars in that assessment. We are expecting the same result for the Hyundai Ioniq 5 since both have zero emissions.

Update: Hyundai reached out with the following statement: “Actually, IONIQ 5 will still start to arrive at dealerships (as planned) by the end of the year or Fall. The timing remains unchanged. There was an initial error in reporting from Electrek.”

It was back in February when Hyundai introduced the Ioniq 5 but the United States had to wait until May to see the local version. It was supposed to go on sale in North America this fall, but now the company has confirmed reports about the electric SUV being pushed back. Electrek has learned from the South Korean brand the model’s rollout stateside has been delayed by several months.

The company’s US website already reflects the change as it no longer says “coming fall 2021.””Instead, viewers are being informed about a winter arrival for the Ioniq 5, without an exact date. It could mean the first cars will be delivered to customers right before the New Year in a best-case scenario or Hyundai has plans to ship the zero-emissions SUVs from the first days or weeks of 2022.

Hyundai USA still hasn’t announced pricing details for the 2022 Ioniq 5, but has promised a targeted driving range of 300 miles for the rear-wheel-drive model with a single electric motor. The AWD versions with a pair of e-motors will be good for 269 miles on a single charge, except for the range-topping Limited model which will make do with only 244 miles. It’s likely because the flagship trim is loaded with features and therefore is heavier, negatively impacting efficiency.

Measuring118.1 inches between the axles, the Ioniq 5 will have the longest wheelbase of any vehicle sold by Hyundai in the US. The RWD version will push out 225 hp and 258 lb-ft whereas the AWD model will up the ante to 320 hp and 446 lb-ft. Regardless of your pick, all configurations are going to be electronically capped at 115 mph and will boast a towing capacity of 1,500 pounds.

By riding on the E-GMP platform, the Ioniq 5 has been engineered to support fast-charging at 350 kW, in which case it takes only 18 minutes to juice up the battery from 10% to 80%. In just five minutes of charging, the battery gains enough energy for 68 miles provided the owner is using the aforementioned 350-kW connection.

You’re in for a long wait for the mechanically related Kia EV6 as deliveries won’t start until early 2022 while the sportier EV6 GT is programmed to hit US soil by late next year. The Genesis GV60 has yet to be announced for North America, but it goes without saying it too will go on sale next year.

Following a record number of preorders, it’s safe to say the Ioniq 5 is off to a great start. Hyundai is confident the dedicated electric crossover has what it takes to convince people the time has come to switch to EVs by working on a subscription plan. Automotive News calls it a “try-and-buy program” that will extend over a period of one to three months and will primarily be aimed at first-time EV buyers.

The South Korean marque is currently working on finalizing the subscription program, which will be available in North America. Hyundai believes people who are going to sign up and trial the Ioniq 5 will be interested in owning the zero-emissions crossover beyond those three months after discovering the benefits it brings over a conventionally powered model.

Bundled with the subscription program will be the payments to cover the car’s cost, along with maintenance and insurance. According to Hyundai Motor North America’s vice president of product planning and mobility strategy, Olabisi Boyle, the company expects customers to transition from the subscription plan to an actual purchase after spending time with the Ioniq 5.

Hyundai will have the Ioniq 5 on sale in several states this fall, ahead of 2022 when it will be available nationwide. It aims to deliver 300 miles of range and fast-charging capabilities with a 350-kW charger needing only 18 minutes to replenish the battery from 10% to 80%. Another major selling point is the spacious interior courtesy of the longest wheelbase offered by Hyundai in North America, stretching at 118.1 inches.

Coming in three trim levels, the Ioniq 5 will do battle with the Volkswagen ID.4 and Ford Mustang Mach-E, but also with its in-house rival – the Kia EV6. Genesis is also on the verge of unveiling its dedicated electric crossover riding on the same E-GMP2 platform as the other two Asian models.

It was February 23 when Hyundai unveiled the Ioniq 5 and we’ve been wondering ever since when the dedicated electric vehicle would receive its North American premiere. That day is finally approaching as the first model to ride on the company’s E-GMP platform will premiere stateside on May 24. A virtual presentation will take place that day, prior to a market launch in the US scheduled for this fall.

We will have to wait until Monday to learn about the technical specifications of the US-spec Ioniq 5, but one key figure has been revealed. The EV promises to offer up to 300 miles of EPA-rated range, which is a little bit better than the global version’s 298-mile WLTP rating estimated by Hyundai for the international version. We also know the North American variant will be offered with a bigger 77.4 kWh battery whereas the global Ioniq 5 has to make do with a standard 58-kWh pack and an optional 72.6-kWh battery.

It’s safe to assume the maximum range will be available with the single-motor, rear-wheel-drive version as the dual-motor, AWD model will be heavier and therefore less efficient. On the flip side, the beefier Ioniq 5 will be quicker as Hyundai has quoted a 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) time of 5.2 seconds or 2.2s less than the entry-level model.

One another aspect disclosed by Hyundai for the US-spec model is support for the Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function. It will effectively allow Ioniq 5 owners to use the EV’s battery juice to charge external devices, varying from bicycles to camping equipment. “Other major announcements” are also promised, but it’s unclear for now what does will be about.

Now a sub-brand under Hyundai’s growing umbrella where the luxury Genesis brand also sits, Ioniq will grow to include two additional models in the coming years as an Ioniq 6 is being launched in 2022 to serve as a production version of the Prophecy concept. In 2024, a large SUV positioned above the Ioniq 5 will arrive.

Hyundai’s N performance lineup has blossomed in recent years to include several hatchbacks (i20 N, i30 N, Veloster N) and the newly released Kona N crossover. All of them have one thing in common – a combustion engine – but the man in charge of the N division is suggesting an EV is coming sooner rather than later. In an interview with Top Gear magazine, Albert Biermann rhetorically asked:

“Could you imagine we were not working on it already?” His sentiments were echoed by one of his colleagues working at the N division. Thomas Schemera told the same publication Hyundai is constantly exploring new ways to expand its electric lineup and a performance version based on the Ioniq 5 “seems to be realistic.”

The hardware is already available considering the Kia EV6 GT – which rides on the same E-GMP platform as the Ioniq 5 – packs quite the punch. With 577 horsepower and 564 pound-feet (740 Newton-meters) on tap, the electric crossover from Kia is considerably beefier than its sister model from Hyundai. The Ioniq 5 tops out at 300 hp, so there’s certainly room for improvement in terms of the output delivered by the dual electric motors.

Let’s keep in mind Hyundai has teamed up with electric hypercar marque Rimac for a dedicated electrified sports car as the crown jewel of the N range. There are exciting times ahead for EV enthusiasts and we’re curious to see whether the Ioniq 6 sedan coming in 2022 and the Ioniq 7 SUV due 2024 will get the N treatment.

Meanwhile, Genesis is putting the finishing touches on its own electric crossover based on the E-GMP platform. We’re hearing the GV60 could be debuting as early as June, and with Genesis being the luxury brand of the trio, it would make sense for its version to feature a powerful dual-motor setup. We should find out in the coming weeks.

Ever since the Hyundai Ioniq 5 debuted about a month ago, the exterior design and the technical specifications got the most attention from the media. However, the interior is just as interesting, and that’s not just because the EV has a completely flat floor and a massive wheelbase. YouTuber Asian Petrolhead had the opportunity of being among the first to thoroughly check out the electric midsize SUV, revealing some of its goodies.

With the distance between the front and rear axles stretching at 118.1 inches (3,000 millimeters), it doesn’t come as a surprise the Ioniq 5 has ample rear legroom. After all, the wheelbase is longer than that of the Palisade, a fullsize SUV available with traditional engines. We get to see the rear seats slide back and forth about five inches (127 mm) for when you need the extra legroom or additional cargo volume to carry bulky items.

Hyundai’s first dedicated EV has additional features worth mentioning, including two-stage heated rear seats and manual sunshades for the rear doors, while the B-pillars incorporate the air vents for the passengers sitting in the back. The bottom of the center console contains a pair of USB charging ports, with a storage area right below.

One ace up the Ioniq 5’s sleeve is the power outlet below the rear bench, supporting Vehicle to Load (V2L) tech. What that means is owners can charge external devices, be them house appliances or other items you might use daily. The large sunroof is also a nice feature to have, as are the sliding front center console and extendable front seats with additional leg support.

Dominating the dashboard is a pair of 12-inch fully digital screens in the same vein as you’ll find on the recent Mercedes models. The gear selector stalk is also like cars carrying the three-pointed star, freeing up room between the seats to emphasize the vehicle’s flat-floor layout. Hyundai has decided to keep the climate controls separate from the main screen for quicker access, which is something all automakers should do instead of incorporating all features in the infotainment.

There are quite a few cup holders throughout the cabin along with many storage compartments, including an impressively large glovebox. If you haven’t noticed already, the Ioniq 5 featured here has screens on the interior door panels as the vehicle boasts side cameras instead of conventional mirrors. Hyundai has engineered the EV with cameras, but these will only be offered where the legislation allows it.

Asian Petrolhead then steps outside of the Ioniq 5 to check out its avant-garde design as well as the storage compartments at the front and rear. Being a dedicated EV, it has a fairly decent frunk and a deep trunk area that should be more than enough for your cargo-hauling needs. It’s an impressive package for an electric SUV about the same size as a Tucson, further showing the advantages of riding on a platform exclusively developed for EVs.

Following the Ioniq 5’s launch this year, Hyundai will add the Ioniq 6 sedan in 2022 and a bigger Ioniq 7 SUV in 2024.

Ever since Hyundai introduced the Ioniq 5 about three weeks ago, people have been wondering how the electric midsize SUV looks in real life. Thankfully, a pre-production prototype has now been caught in South Korea without any camouflage whatsoever. It’s safe to say there’s nothing quite like it on the road, and this video showing the EV getting stalked from behind paints an accurate picture about the design in a way the official images couldn’t.

The press photos released by Hyundai gave the sensation of a large hatchback, but in reality, the Ioniq 5 is more along the lines of a low-slung SUV. The prototype had the 20-inch wheels seen in the official images provided by the Korean automaker, a special set of alloys optimized aerodynamically to boost the vehicle’s efficiency.

Those pixel-like headlights and taillights make the Ioniq 5 stand out furthermore, while the fairly large Hyundai badge on the tailgate makes it clear which company is behind the avant-garde EV. When the camera captures the vehicle’s side profile, you can easily observe the impressively short overhangs, typical of a car engineered on a bespoke platform exclusive to electric cars.

Other noteworthy features include the recessed door handles that remain flush with the bodywork to boost efficiency and only pop out when you need them. The placement of the cap for the charging port is a bit unusual, but we’re certain people will get used to it with time. Overall, the Ioniq 5 spotted in traffic looks like it traveled from the future to 2021 as it sends out a strong concept car vibe, mirroring the 2019 Concept 45 that previewed it.

While the spy video sadly doesn’t capture the interior, we know from the official images the cabin is quite special in a number of ways. For example, the center console between the front seats slides fore and aft while the wheelbase stretches at a full 3,000 millimeters (118.1 inches), meaning there’s plenty of legroom in the back. The dual 12-inch screen setup is reminiscent of luxury cars, which is the same we could say about the head-up display as it’s also something you’d normally expect in a premium model.

The Ioniq 5 has a lot going for it, from design to technical specifications, so it doesn’t come as a surprise its arrival is already the most successful new product launch for Hyundai in Europe.
