It was back in May 2021 when Lamborghini announced an expansion of its portfolio with the addition of a fourth model line bound to be purely electric. Initially, the folks from Sant’Agata Bolognese said it would arrive in the second half of the decade, but CEO Stephan Winkelmann revealed this week it will debut in 2028.

Rumors of a 2+2 Lamborghini have been swirling around the Internet for a couple of years, and Autocar has now learned from the firm’s top brass the gossip is true: “It’s a completely new car; the fourth model. It’s a segment we haven’t been in for decades, if we speak about a 2+2 or four-seater, maybe also high from the ground, with more ground clearance.

The last part of his statement clearly suggests it will be something along the lines of a crossover, while the 2+2 layout indicates there will be limited legroom for rear passengers. Discontinued at the end of the 1970s, the Urraco was Lamborghini’s last sports car to have a 2+2 interior configuration. Aside from being taller, its spiritual successor will likely have short overhangs thanks to a dedicated electric platform.

The exotic Italian brand will commence the development of its first-ever EV later this year and is already planning ahead for a second electric model. The direct replacement for the current Urus “Super SUV” will eschew the combustion engine to adopt a zero-emission powertrain. That one too will be a completely new vehicle with nothing shared with the V8-powered model available today.

Autocar claims the Urus EV is earmarked for a 2029 release and will be bigger than the aforementioned 2+2 model. Meanwhile, Lamborghini will launch a plug-in hybrid variant of the first generation within the next two years. In addition, the Aventador and Huracan replacements will be hybridized as well as the plan is to halve CO2 emissions by 2025.

2022 will mark the end of the pure combustion engine as Lamborghini has confirmed every single new product coming from 2023 will be a hybrid. Company CEO Stephan Winkelmann spoke with Autocar and Automotive News Europe to outline its electrification agenda for the years to come. The Sant’Agata Bolognese marque will kick things off in 2023 with the Aventador’s replacement, which will rock a new V12 engine as the central part of a hybrid powertrain.

Come 2024, the Urus will gain a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) setup, which will be followed around 2028 by a purely electric car. Meanwhile, Lamborghini will exclusively sell hybrids by 2025 to cut fleet CO2 emissions by at least 50%, according to the firm’s boss. He ruled out the introduction of a V6 engine, which can only mean the Huracan successor will retain the V10, but with an electric twist.

The exotic Italian car manufacturer is sticking with large-displacement engines as Winkelmann claims they’re important for the firm’s heritage. He did admit making the V10 and V12 comply with stricter emissions regulations is a tough job. As to whether the next-generation Urus will still have a twin-turbo V8, it’s too soon to say.

As previously announced, Lamborghini will spend more than €1.5 billion to electrify its current three-model portfolio by the middle of the decade. Some of the money will be invested in carbon fiber technology to cut weight and partially offset the extra bulk after adding an electric motor, battery, and other hardware for a hybrid setup.

When inquired by Autocar about whether the typical Lamborghini buyer will embrace hybrids, Winkelmann responded with: “For sure, they are ready for hybridization because we always said we don’t need to be the first ones, but when we kick in, we need to be the best, and this is something we strongly believe is going to happen.”

Lamborghini has finally retired the Aventador after a 10-year production run and is making the necessary preparations to launch the all-new flagship model. Spotted in Italy for the very first time, the electrified supercar was briefly hiding under thick camouflage and barely moving. We do get to see the imposingly wide rear tires and a top-mounted quad exhaust system with dual finishers shaped like hexagons.

The heavily disguised test vehicle gives us the impression it’s slightly shorter than the Aventador, but it’s too early to say for sure. What we do know is the mid-engined V12 machine will feature a hybrid powertrain as the Sant’Agata Bolognese will electrify all three model lineups by the middle of the decade. To make it happen, Lamborghini will be spending more than €1.5 billion in the coming years.

Bear in mind the fabled Italian supercar marque has already launched a couple of hybrid cars with the Sian and Countach featuring supercapacitor tech, but both were limited-run vehicles. The Aventador’s successor will be a permanent fixture in the lineup and will be joined by hybrid derivatives of the Huracan replacement and the facelifted Urus SUV.

Details regarding the technical specifications of the new top-tier supercar are shrouded in mystery, but the V12 is expected to remain naturally aspirated. It’s unclear whether the displacement will remain at 6.5 liters or the engineers are planning some changes to the internal combustion engine. One potential hardware upgrade will be the switch to a dual-clutch automatic transmission replacing the rather outdated independent shifting rod (ISR) automated manual.

How much power to expect from the Aventador successor? A lot. The Sian makes a combined 807 hp whereas the modern-day Countach puts out a slightly lower 803 hp. Logic tells us the new V12 machine will also break the 800-hp barrier and we wouldn’t be too surprised if it will outpunch the two Aventador-based special editions. Closer to 1,000 hp wouldn’t be too far-fetched, but we’ll have to wait and see.

A fully electric Lamborghini is still a way off since Lamborghini chairman and CEO Stephan Winkelmann recently said it won’t arrive until 2027 or 2028. Early reports state it will be a 2+2 gran tourer riding on the SSP architecture currently being developed by the Volkswagen Group.

It was back in May when Lamborghini announced to launch plug-in hybrid versions of the Huracan and Aventador replacements as well as a PHEV variant of the Urus SUV. The electrifying disclosure also included the promise of a fourth model line, one that would arrive in the second half of the decade as a pure EV. In a recent interview with Yahoo Finance, Lamborghini chairman and CEO Stephan Winkelmann talked a bit about how it aims to prepare the Sant’Agata Bolognese company to comply with increasingly stricter emissions regulations.

The head honcho reiterated the two sports cars will become plug-in hybrids in the following years once the time will come to replace the aging V12 Aventador and the V10 Huracan mid-engined machines. Two “more versatile vehicles” are on the agenda, with one of them being the facelifted Urus scheduled to arrive in 2022 likely with a charging port.

As for the mysterious EV, the 57-year-old German executive mentioned Lamborghini’s first zero-emissions model will probably arrive either in 2027 or 2028. While he refrained from revealing the body style, it is believed to be a four-seat, two-door gran tourer riding on the Volkswagen Group’s upcoming highly modular SSP platform. It will serve as an evolution and combination of MEB and next year’s PPE (Porsche Macan EV, Audi Q6 E-Tron).

Now that Rimac and Bugatti are in cahoots, the Lambo without an internal combustion engine could benefit from the expertise gained by the Croatian hypercar marque while developing the Nevera. Launching a GT makes sense as it would allow the Italian brand to enter a new segment, thus offering great potential for even better sales.

Stephan Winkelmann believes there is a real opportunity to keep gasoline engines alive and make them CO2 neutral by using synthetic fuels, which Porsche has been working on for many years. He thinks it could be suitable for performance cars, but now is not the right time to decide whether the company should pursue synthetic fuels.

Meanwhile, Lamborghini is spending more than €1.5 billion to hybridize its current three-model portfolio until 2025 when it aims to cut CO2 emissions in half compared to 2021 levels. A portion of the investment is allocated to researching carbon fiber, with the goal being to cut weight and offset the added bulk associated with a hybrid powertrain.

Following the Aston Martin Valkyrie Spider and Acura NSX Type S revealed yesterday, it’s time for another hybrid performance machine to break cover. Some would argue it’s a bit more special as it brings back a fabled name – Countach. Yes, Lamborghini is dusting off the iconic moniker last used in 1990 when the Sant’Agata Bolognese company retired its V12 flagship to make room for the Diablo.

Featuring a retro-inspired design without straying too far from the Aventador it’s based on, the new Countach is Lamborghini’s second production car to feature a hybrid powertrain. It uses the same supercapacitor technology as the Sián FKP 37, but in a slightly lower state of tune. The naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V12 pushes out 769 horsepower on its own, plus an extra 34 hp from the 48-volt supercapacitor tech.

With a grand total of 803 horsepower, the Countach revival needs a mere 2.8 seconds to hit 62 mph (100 km/h) from a standstill. The sprint from 0 to 124 mph (200 km/h) takes 8.6 seconds en route to a top speed of 221 mph (355 km/h). Lamborghini notes its latest electrified supercar weighs only 1,595 kilograms (3,516 pounds, dry), which is quite remarkable considering the massive combustion engine and the extra hybrid tech.

Speaking of which, the e-motor is mounted directly on the gearbox and is powered by supercapacitors that have three times more power than a traditional lithium-ion battery of the same weight. The electric motor produces an instant torque of 35 Newton-meters (26 pound-feet) of torque and weighs as little as 34 kilograms (75 pounds).

Known by its full name as the Lamborghini Countach LPI 800-4, the hybridized Italian machine will be produced in 112 examples as a throwback to the original Countach prototype that carried the LP 112 designation. To further strengthen the connection with the 1970s icon, the modern-day equivalent will be available with heritage colors from that decade.

The first customer deliveries are scheduled to take place in Q1 2022.

Unveiled in 2014, the Lamborghini Asterion pictured here was ahead of its time as although the concept never materialized as a production model, it did preview Sant’Agata Bolognese’s electrification agenda. It was essentially a Huracan with a mid-mounted V10 engine and a pair of electric motors sitting at the front to deliver a combined output of 910 horsepower from the plug-in hybrid system.

Fast forward to mid-2021, Lamborghini through the voice of its boss Stephan Winkelmann was finally ready to talk about a road-going PHEV in an interview with the British magazine Autocar. It’s not Huracan-related as the model in question will serve as the direct replacement for the larger Aventador and will utilize an all-new development of the V12 engine.

Rather than relying on the supercapacitor technology that Lamborghini debuted with the Sian, the company’s next flagship will combine an overhauled twelve-cylinder mill with at least one electric motor. Being a plug-in hybrid, it should have a decent-sized battery for some zero-emissions range, although we’re not expecting much since this will still be a fully fledged supercar.

Winkelmann said the next Aventador (will get a different name) will eschew a supercapacitor since the technology is considered just an intermediate step before the introduction of a more electrified powertrain. In addition, Lambo’s head honcho admitted the Sian FKP 37’s supercapacitor tech is not enough to enable the company to pass the tougher emissions regulations planned in Europe in the coming years.

The next range-topper from Lamborghini might not actually be the firm’s first road-going PHEV since that role will probably be attributed to the updated Urus SUV coming next year with a plug-in hybrid arrangement. The smaller Huracan sports car will also embrace electrification in 2024 when the model will transition to the next generation, possibly without the V10 engine.

In the latter half of the decade, Lamborghini will introduce a purely electric car to serve as its fourth model line. Details are scarce at the moment of writing, but Winkelmann hinted it will be a 2+2 grand tourer to revive the spirit of the Espada.

Niche high-end marques can’t be immune to electrification if they want to avoid having to pay huge fines related to excessive emissions. For this reason, Lamborghini is announcing plans to offer an all-hybrid lineup by the end of 2024. In other words, the Huracan and Aventador replacements along with the Urus SUV facelift will all receive some type of electrification.

Not only that, but the peeps from Sant’Agata Bolognese are also revealing plans to introduce the company’s first pure electric car in the latter half of the decade. It’s unclear which shape it will take, either a sports car or a more practical vehicle with rear doors to join the family-friendly Urus. We’re hearing it will be a two-door gran tourer model based on the PPE platform that Audi is developing with Porsche.

In regards to the partially electrified models, it is believed the V10 Huracan and V12 Aventador successors will employ a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The bigger of the two mid-engined supercars will (thankfully) retain its twelve-cylinder mill while the future of the smaller unit is in doubt. Both cars are going to offer some sort of all-electric range, but the details are murky at this point.

Meanwhile, the Urus will be the first series production hybrid from Lamborghini and is due in 2023. It too is widely believed to adopt a PHEV setup, and while information is currently not available, the system could be similar to what Porsche is offering in the Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid. Given the Urus’ positioning in the VW Group, it will likely prioritize performance over efficiency, so expect more power at the expense of fuel economy.

The trio of hybrids will help Lamborghini slash its CO2 emissions by 50% by the beginning of 2025 and will require an investment of more than €1.5 billion in the next four years. It’s the largest investment in the company’s history and will also focus on carbon fiber to compensate for the added bulk of the new hardware related to the hybrid system.
