The fate of the Leaf has been sealed as the compact hatchback will morph into a crossover in 2025. Before that happens, Nissan is applying some mild tweaks in Europe to what is generally considered as the world’s first mass-market EV. The 2022 model year will arrive on the Old Continent in April with an assortment of cosmetic revisions to keep the aging electric car relevant in an increasingly crowded segment.

Perhaps the first thing you will notice is the discreetly updated corporate badge on the wheels, front grille, and tailgate. Speaking of which, the alloys in 16- and 17-inch sizes have been freshened up with a black look, prompting Nissan to say these now exude a “premium feel.” The 2022 Leaf also receives a couple of paint jobs borrowed from the Qashqai and Ariya. Universal Blue and Magnetic Blue joint a color palette including six monotone shades and five two-tone hues.

Minor styling changes to the body have been made, but nothing to write home about. You can tell the second-generation Leaf is getting a bit long in the tooth, especially on the inside where the dashboard is starting to look outdated. You do get some modern safety tech, namely Nissan’s ProPILOT that will automatically stop, start, and maintain a safe distance from the car in front of you.

The 2022 Leaf continues to offer one-pedal operation for better comfort and you also have support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration. Your smartphone can also remotely operate the vehicle’s climate control system by using the NissanConnect app.

As before, Nissan is selling the Leaf in Europe with two battery options and a maximum range of up to 385 kilometers (239 miles) in the WLTP cycle. To date, the electric hatchback has generated nearly 600,000 sales since the first-gen model debuted back in 2010 before the current model arrived in late 2017.

Nissan is in a festive mood as it’s celebrating the 35th anniversary of car production at its factory in Sunderland, UK. To mark this special occasion, it has decided to convert the first model ever built there to electric propulsion by combining the Bluebird with the Leaf. Gone are the internal combustion engine and gearbox of the donor car, now replaced with the e-motor and the 40-kWh battery sourced from the once-popular EV.

The Japanese automaker claims it took a lot of work to create the electric Bluebird as the engineers decided to optimize weight distribution by installing the battery cells between the engine bay and the trunk. In addition, the boxy hatchback has an uprated suspension to cope with the added weight commanded by the battery pack.

Nissan Leaf-powered Bluebird

This restomodded “Bluebird” benefits from updated brakes, steering, and heating, which are all now electrically powered. Other miscellaneous tweaks include an illuminated Nissan badge and a glorious 1980s colorful livery. It retains the original fuel flap where the charging port has now been integrated to juice up the battery at a maximum rate of 6.6 kW. Interestingly, the fuel gauge actually works, but it obviously shows the battery’s state of charge rather than how much gasoline you have left.

The Bluebird is a one-off project and hasn’t been homologated for public roads. Nissan does estimate it hits 62 mph (100 km/h) in about 15 seconds, which is nearly double the time it takes the Leaf to complete the same task. With the battery fully charged, the unique EV should cover roughly 130 miles (209 kilometers) or considerably less than the 40-kWh Leaf with its WLTP rating of 168 miles (270 km). Side note – the more expensive version fitted with the larger 62-kWh pack can cover 239 miles (385 kilometers) based on the same test cycle.

As you have probably heard by now, the Leaf as we know it will cease to exist in 2025 when it will be replaced by an electric crossover. The latter was officially teased at the end of last month when Nissan unveiled the Chill-Out concept.

After two generations as an electric hatchback, the Nissan Leaf will be completely transformed into a compact crossover in 2025 when the all-new model is scheduled to arrive. The important disclosure was made by the company’s European boss Guillaume Cartier while speaking with the British magazine Autocar. The Leaf’s direct successor will not only change its body style but also switch to the CMF-EV architecture developed by the Renault-Nissan alliance and already used by the larger Arya and the Renault Megane E-Tech Electric.

In hindsight, many saw this coming taking into consideration Nissan teased a C-segment electric crossover at the beginning of July. At that time, it didn’t disclose the vehicle’s identity, only saying that it would be built at the Sunderland plant in the UK following an investment worth £1 billion that also includes constructing a Gigafactory in the immediate vicinity of the factory.

By making a safe bet on electrification, Nissan is unlikely to invest the necessary funds to make its current internal combustion engines comply with the stricter Euro 7 emissions regulations scheduled to come into effect around 2025. Looking at the company’s lineup, crossovers and SUVs are the main focus considering Nissan already has the Juke, Qashqai, and X-Trail, with the electric Ariya coming soon and the high-riding Leaf later this decade.

A replacement for the Micra supermini is also on the agenda, but Guillaume Cartier mentioned the main hurdle is to make it a profitable car, one that will “absolutely” take the shape of an electric vehicle. These changes to the lineup will help Nissan increase sales of EVs to 80 percent of the total global volume by 2030.

Nissan vows to offer an electrified version – be it a hybrid or pure EV – of an existing model as early as 2025. One exception will be the sports cars as the 370Z replacement, simply called the Z, will do away with electrification. The future of the GT-R supercar is uncertain, although rumors have pointed it too will become a hybrid or a fully electric vehicle later this decade.

Nissan is making some small changes to the Leaf for the 2022 model year to keep the all-electric hatchback relevant in an increasingly competitive segment. Regardless of trim level, the EV now comes equipped as standard with the CHAdeMO Quick Charge Port and a portable 240-volt charging cable. Not only that, but the SV Plus trim level now has the contents of the previously optional Technology Packages, such as ProPILOT Assist and Intelligent Around View Monitor, included as standard.

The base model now starts at $27,400 for the Leaf S with a 40-kWh lithium-ion battery pack and an electric motor rated at 147 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. It’s followed by the better-equipped Leaf SV with the same drivetrain, which is good for 149 miles of estimated range.

Stepping up to the beefier powertrain will increase the starting price to $32,400 for the Leaf S Plus, followed by the Leaf SV Plus at $35,400, and the range-topping Leaf SL Plus at $37,400. These three come with a bigger 62-kWh battery to extend the maximum range between cycles to an estimated 226 miles for the S Plus while the other two can cover 215 miles.

Nissan equips the Plus models with an uprated electric motor producing 214 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque. Regardless of the one you go for, all 2022 Leaf EVs benefit from a limited lithium-ion battery warranty for eight years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. There’s also a separate warranty against battery capacity loss during the same interval. The pricing mentioned above does not include the additional $975 destination and handling charges.

The Nissan Leaf is celebrating its tenth anniversary in 2021 through a special edition for Europe and the Japanese marque claims it’s the world’s first mass-market EV. During its decade-long life cycle spanning across two generations, the electric hatchback has generated more than 500,000 sales all over the world.

Nissan is in a festive mood as it’s blowing out the ten candles on the Leaf’s birthday cake by introducing a special edition in Europe. Suitably called the Leaf10, the electric hatchback takes design cues from the Ariya SUV and adopts a sophisticated Kumiko pattern on the roof, side mirrors, and tailgate. If you’re unfamiliar with the term “Kumiko,” it refers to a traditional Japanese technique using wooden bars to create various designs.

Rounding off the changes on the outside is a bespoke badge adorning the C-pillar finished in black, so suffice it to say, the exterior changes aren’t what you’d call significant. The good news about the Leaf10 is that Nissan has also made some tweaks inside where the special edition comes loaded with a Wi-Fi hotspot for up to seven devices through the built-in 4G connectivity.

The Leaf10 is brimming with tech, including the NissanConnect Services smartphone app through which the owner can remotely control key features of the EV, including monitoring the battery charge level. Another relevant example is the ability to unlock the vehicle from a distance, which should be useful when you’re about to receive a package but want to avoid contact with the delivery person due to coronavirus concerns.

Another function that might come in handy if you’re letting a youngster drive the Leaf is to set up physical boundaries by establishing a pre-defined location. In addition, the zero-emissions hatchback can be pre-programmed so that it doesn’t go above a certain speed. Pre-heating the EV is also a possibility, and there’s blind-spot monitoring to reduce the risk of an accident with someone coming from behind.

In its 10-year life cycle during which it has spawned two generations, the Leaf has generated more than 180,000 sales in Europe while global deliveries have surpassed half a million vehicles. Nissan claims it’s the world’s first mass-market EV, and this latest flavor celebrating the electric car’s success will arrive at dealers across the Old Continent later this month.

Electric cars are considered expensive by by a large number of potential customers. Especially in the U.S. where certain models aren’t available right now. Yet, Europe is seeing a rise in small, electric choices that don’t necessarily break the bank. Furthermore, cars like the BMW i3, Renault Zoe or Nissan Leaf have been on the market long enough to make second-hand purchase a viable option.

Whether you should go for one or not is still up to you, as electric cars while more reliable than ICE ones, have a different set of problems, mostly related to the battery pack. The guys from LoveCars have set out to test the aforementioned trio and see what each car is like. They cover the range indicated by each car when setting off, with the battery fully charged, to see which would cover the most ground.

The BMW i3 showed a range of 99 miles on the dash, the Renault Zoe showed 90 miles while the Nissan Leaf was the best of the three with an estimated range of 112 miles. What makes this test interesting though is that the weather was not nearly as good as you might want it for an EV test, as well as the fact that the i3 was an REx model. That is a disadvantage for the i3 as the range-extended models have a lower battery range.

By the end of the video, the guys tried to sum up which car was more efficient. The trip the trio took was 19 miles long so, considering the range shown by each car when they set off, the end result would show just how efficient each model is. The BMW i3 showed a range of 91 miles at the end of the test, the Renault Zoe 50 miles while the Nissan Leaf showed 88 miles left.

I guess it’s pretty easy to draw a conclusion here.
