In an unexpected move, Tesla has just announced major price drops across their entire lineup. Some models, like the Tesla Model Y Long Range All-Wheel Drive is now $20,000 cheaper than the previous price. The price was dropped $13,000 to $52,990 so Model Y now qualifies for the $7,500 tax rebate as well. However, there is one significant price hike – the seven-seat option on the Model Y is now $4,000, rather than the $3,000 it used to be.

Tesla also cut the Model 3 base version by $3,000 to $43,990, according to its website. The Tesla Model 3 Performance variant saw a price cut of $9,000 to $53,990. Reuters reported that in Germany, Tesla cut prices on the Model 3 and the Model Y from 1% to around 17%, depending on the configuration. The Model Y will now sell for 44,890 euros ($48,499), down 9,100 euros.

Other configurations, including Performance models, have also received price cuts. The Tesla Model S Plaid has the largest price reduction – $21,000 (15%) reduction. However, there is one significant price hike – the seven-seat option on the Model Y is now $4,000, a $1,000 more than before.

Earlier this month, Tesla angered customers in China by slashing prices on its Model 3 and Model Y cars there after many had agreed to take delivery at higher prices before December 31. But according to a price sheet we reviewed, customers in the United States who placed an order in December 2022 have now received a revised price sheet. Of course, they have yet to take delivery of their cars.

Tesla had a record-breaking 2021 but this year is already looking much better as customer deliveries of the Model Y from Gigafactory Texas could start soon. How soon? Sources familiar with the company’s agenda have told Electrek they’re targeting the end of the quarter for the first vehicles to be shipped to their rightful owners.

Several Model Ys have been caught on camera in recent months at Gigafactory Texas and it is believed Tesla is currently doing last-minute testing with pre-production prototypes. Electrek goes on to say new employees are being hired in Austin – an obvious sign series production will commence sooner rather than later.

Speaking of the electric crossover being built at a new plant, the Model Y will also be assembled in the near future at Tesla’s Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg to cater to the European market. The EV automaker is preparing for a new record-shattering year as demand for the Model Y continues to remain at an impressively high level.

Image provided by Tesla Inc.

Beyond the Model Y, Elon Musk has promised to intervene during the 2021 Q4 earnings call on January 26 to talk about updates to the product roadmap. It’s when we will likely find out when deliveries of the Cybertruck will finally commence after several delays. According to a recent report from Reuters, that might not happen until the end of Q1 2023.

We are also curious to find out when and if the second-generation Roadster is due to hit the market since we haven’t heard anything about the convertible sports car in a long time. Tesla’s head honcho could also talk about the Semi as the utilitarian vehicle has been caught on camera on multiple instances in recent times.

Of course, the earnings call will go through the juicy numbers of 2021 when Tesla produced 930,422 cars and delivered 936,172. In 2022 with the boost in Model Y production, it seems highly probable the company will hit the one-million mark in both cases.

Tesla has switched from using Intel Atom processors to AMD Ryzen hardware for the Model 3 and Model Y. The first cars with the more powerful MCU3 setup were originally built for the Chinese market before arriving in the United States. Naturally, the time has come for Europe to get the latest setup featuring increased power, enabling quicker-to-use infotainment and navigation.

That’s the good news. The bad news is this hardware change has taken its toll on the car’s efficiency as Model 3 and Model Y units equipped with the AMD Ryzen have a slightly lower range. Tesla explains the MCU3 “requires more power, resulting in a minor drop in range.” People with a pending delivery are receiving this warning and have to confirm they understand the change and proceed with delivery or cancel the order.

In this particular case of a car heading to Australia, a Model 3’s WLTP range has dropped by 22 kilometers (14 miles) to 602 kilometers (374 miles). It’s not the end of the world, but certainly not a pleasant surprise either. Over in Europe, the M3 is also impacted by the switch to AMD Ryzen, with the exception of the Model 3 RWD as it soldiers on with 510 km (317 miles) of range for the version riding on 18-inch wheels. Go for the one equipped with a 19-inch set and efficiency drops to 491 km (305 miles).

Elsewhere, the M3 Long Range AWD now does 626 km (389 miles) or 11 km (7 miles) less than before on the 18-inch alloys and the 19-inch wheels come with a 12-km penalty to 602 km (374 miles). Step up to the M3 Performance with its 20-inch set and you should be able to cover 547 km (340 miles) on a single charge, representing a decline of 20 km (12 miles).

On the other hand, the Model Y benefits from a higher range, presumed to come from a battery size increase from 77 kWh to 82 kWh.

Note: All numbers are according to the WLTP test cycle.

If you had been hoping to get behind the wheel of a Tesla Model Y at a more reasonable price tag, we’ve got some bad news to share. The base Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive configuration won’t be going into production after all as those who managed to reserve one have been announced this version has been effectively canceled.

Rumors about the vehicle’s termination originally emerged back in February, and now it’s official. Reservation holders have been announced that their “current configuration is no longer available. Update your order in your Tesla Account.” There is one aspect the company has yet to address as those who preordered the vehicle got the Full Self-Driving system for $7,000.

However, the price has since gone up to $10,000. A question arises – Will someone with a Model Y LR RWD reservation have to pony up the extra $3,000 should they decide to buy a different model?

The fact Tesla has decided to take such a measure shouldn’t come as a shock seeing as how the Standard Range Rear-Wheel Drive suffered from the same fate in February. That said, the EV automaker still makes this specification in China at the Shanghai factory and sells the model in the People’s Republic.

Speaking of production, the Model Y is assembled at the Fremont factory from where it’s shipped globally. The zero-emissions crossover will also be made from 2022 at the Berlin plant in Germany as well as at Gigafactory Texas.

A hypothetical return of the rear-wheel-drive Model Y would be greatly appreciated considering Tesla has been increasing the electric SUV’s starting price in the last few months. The cheapest spec money can buy is the Long Range at $58,990, while the Performance retails from $63,990. Both have dual motors, all-wheel drive, and over 300 miles of range.

You need to arm yourself with a lot of patience to get the Long Range since it has an estimated delivery time of July 2022. Those who are willing to upgrade to the Performance will get the vehicle sooner as the company’s website says customer deliveries start in February if you order today.

The microchip shortage has been wreaking havoc for the better part of this year and the problems are unlikely to go away until the second half of 2022 at the earliest. Many automakers had no other way but to temporarily stop the production of some cars due to the missing semiconductors. Others decided to take out some features and reduce the asking price in order to avoid halting the assembly line.

As with most car manufacturers, Tesla hasn’t been immune to these issues and had to constantly adapt its operations to keep production going as much as possible. That being said, it’s the first time we’re hearing cars are allegedly being shipped to some owners without informing them beforehand about missing equipment. Not only that, but customers paid full price for their electric vehicles rather than getting a discount to make up for the lost features. However, nothing is official at this point.

Model 3 and Model Y buyers took to Reddit to express their frustrations about their new EVs missing the essential USB-C ports, specifically those mounted on the center console. To make matters worse, wireless charging doesn’t seem to be working on these cars while some of the other vehicles are missing the USB ports for the rear passengers.

The first reports emerged on November 11, but not all cars delivered in recent days have this problem, so it all comes down to how lucky you are. It’s worth mentioning that while some of the owners learned about the missing ports before taking delivery, others discovered the glaring omissions only after driving home in their new Model 3 or Model Y.

The silver lining is Tesla can fix this post-purchase as someone who bought a Model Y Performance was told he would have to make an appointment to get the missing ports. It’s going to take approximately 10 minutes and will obviously be free of charge since customers have already paid for the USBs and wireless charging.

Even though the problem is fixable, it’s still frustrating to pay increasingly more money (given the many price hikes in 2021) for a Model 3 or a Model Y without some of the USB ports. We haven’t heard anything so far about the Model S and Model X being affected by this issue, so perhaps Tesla is saving the few microchips it has for the more expensive cars since these have higher profit margins.

Most automakers change the technical specifications of their cars with the model year change before a more significant update is introduced with the vehicle’s mid-cycle facelift. That does not represent Tesla’s modus operandi as the Palo Alto electric car manufacturer frequently makes tweaks to its products, even during the course of a model year.

That being said, the 2022 model year introduction for the Model 3 and Model Y in the United States happens to coincide with one important change – better range. In typical Tesla fashion, we are not given an explanation as to how the extra miles were extracted, so all we have for the time being are the numbers provided on the company’s website.

What used to be known as the Model 3 Standard Range Plus is now simply the Rear-Wheel Drive model with a maximum range of 272 miles instead of the previous 262 miles. Bear in mind this upgrade is available only if you go with the standard 18-inch wheels because upgrading to the bigger 19-inch set drops the range to 267 miles.

Stepping up to the Model 3 Long Range will increase the range to 358 miles or five miles more than before, provided you stick with the 18-inch alloys. Switching to the 19-inch wheels will result in a loss of efficiency to 334 miles.

As far as the Model Y is concerned, the all-electric SUV in the Long Range specification sees its range jump by four miles to 330 miles with the 19-inch set or 318 miles with the 20-inch wheels.

Early reports are stating the extra gains in the range have to do with the switch to lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries. These are made in China but Tesla has expressed its intentions to make them at the Freemont factory to improve logistics. Included in the shareholders’ presentation for Q3 2021 results from last month, Tesla confirmed the switch to LFP: “For standard range vehicles, we are shifting to Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery chemistry globally.”

It’s increasingly more difficult from a financial point of view to get behind the wheel of a new Tesla as the Palo Alto manufacturer keeps increasing prices with a worryingly high frequency. It was only a couple of weeks ago when the Model 3 and Model Y were both subjected to price bumps and now the company has updated its online configurator to reflect yet another overnight price hike.

The cheapest Tesla money can buy, the Model 3 in the Standard Range Plus specification, no longer costs from $41,990 as the asking price has gone up by a substantial $2,000 to $43,990. Thankfully, pricing for the Long Range AWD has remained intact, at $49,990, and it’s the same story with the sporty Performance version as it soldiers on at $57,990.

As far as the Model Y is concerned, the electric SUV in the Long Range Dual Motor specification has been hit with a $2,000 price increase, which means that it now kicks off from $56,990. Those interested in getting the hotter Performance trim level will be happy to hear Tesla has not modified its starting price, which remains at $61,990.

Aside from these rather sizeable price bumps, there’s more bad news to share. The waiting times are being extended yet again. As it stands, the Model 3 Standard Range Plus has an estimated delivery of September 2022 with the standard 18-inch wheels or June 2022 if you’re willing to upgrade to the larger 19-inch wheels.

The Model 3 Long Range has an estimated delivery in December regardless of wheel size, while the Performance – which comes exclusively with a 20-inch set – is listed on Tesla’s site with November delivery.

It’s the same story with the electric SUV as the delivery time depends on the wheel size. For example, the Long Range with the standard 19-inch set has an August 2022 estimated delivery whereas going for the 20-inch rims reduces the waiting time to May. Riding on 21-inch alloys, the Model Y Performance will be delivered in December.

Interestingly, Tesla’s configurator is selecting the larger wheels by default in a move to convince people into buying the more expensive alloys and reduce the delivery time.

Following several delays, Tesla’s new factory in Berlin will finally be up and running in November or December at the latest, according to CEO Elon Musk. The company’s head honcho made the announcement this weekend at the plant, which was temporarily transformed into a festival site for a one-day county fair.

The targeted weekly output is 5,000 cars, although Musk said he “hopefully” aims for 10,000 vehicles to roll off the assembly line at the plant in Germany where the Model Y will be manufactured. For the time being, the necessary batteries will be imported from the firm’s plant in China until a cell factory will become operational in Germany.

Tesla’s boss cautioned that while kicking off production is “nice,” he admitted that achieving the targeted volume goal represents the “hard part.” Interestingly, hitting 10,000 cars per week will take more time than Tesla needed to build the factory, said Elon Musk while speaking with the audience gathered at the Berlin plant.

Official approval to legally start production of the electric crossover is expected to arrive in the following weeks, and if all will go according to plan, Tesla will build 500,000 EVs annually when the factory will reach its full potential. That number would represent more than double the number of zero-emissions vehicles produced in Germany last year.

As far as the cell factory is concerned, Tesla aims to invest close to $6 billion at a facility adjacent to the car plant to make it happen. It’s targeting a capacity of 50-gigawatt hours, which would beat the 40-GWh capacity announced by rival Volkswagen at the cell factory in Salzgitter. However, it’s easier said than done as Elon Musk admitted finding the necessary workforce is quite tricky, therefore he is asking people from “all over Europe” to apply for a job.

For the umpteenth time this year, Tesla has quietly updated its online configurator to reflect a price increase for some of its models. This time around, the Model 3 and Model Y are affected, with the sedan now starting at $41,990 or $2,000 more than before for the entry-level Standard Range Plus trim. Tesla has also added an extra $1,000 to the Performance’s sticker, which now begins at $57,990. Only the Long Range’s pricing remains unchanged (for now), at $49,990.

Ordering a Model 3 Standard Range Plus now comes with an estimated delivery date of April 2022, but you can get the electric sedan sooner if you opt for the Long Range, which has an estimated delivery date of December 2021. The quickest way to get behind the wheel of a Model 3 is by stepping up to the Performance model, listed with a November delivery date.

Moving onto the Model Y, the electric crossover costs $1,000 more than before for the Long Range specification, meaning it will set you back $54,990 before any applicable EV incentives. Upgrade to the Performance and the price jumps by $1,000 to $61,990. Going for the sportier version will reduce the estimated delivery time from the Long Range’s April 2022 to December 2021.

It’s an interesting decision taken by Tesla when you take into account more and more rivals are hitting the market. However, the decision is justifiable in light of the microchip shortage, inflation, and increasing production costs. Nevertheless, cars like the Model 3 and Model Y are no longer the bargain EVs they used to be, especially since the competition is catching up in terms of technology and range.

There are no price modifications for the larger and more expensive Model S and Model X models, but the two are already more expensive than they were at the beginning of the year. In the case of the SUV, customer deliveries of the refreshed model have been pushed back, but they should finally commence later this month.

Tesla’s online configurator keeps changing as the EV maker frequently adjusts pricing, delivery times, and the availability of certain versions. Case in point, the Model Y Standard Range was introduced earlier this year but it didn’t take long for the Palo Alto-based company to retire the entry-level trim. During its short time on the market, it got a substantial $2,000 price cut about a month after its launch, lowering the price to just under $37,000.

Tesla then pulled the plug by removing the Standard Range from the configurator, but head honcho Elon Musk said at that time the base Model Y would still be available “off the menu.” In other words, those interested in getting behind the wheel of the cheapest electric crossover from Tesla had to order it either by phone or in person.

The Standard Range’s introduction was considered an unexpected move taking into account Elon Musk claimed the version’s range of fewer than 250 miles would be “unacceptably low.” When it was announced, the lowest-spec Model Y was advertised with an EPA-estimated range of 244 miles.

Fast forward to July, the Model Y Standard Range is back, but not in the United States. It’s showing up in Tesla’s configurator for Hong Kong, meaning it’s available in right-hand drive. This single-motor, rear-wheel-drive version starts off at HK$329,800 (about $42,450 at current exchange rates) and offers 455 kilometers (283 miles) of range in the WLTP test cycle, which typically results in a longer range than EPA.

The Standard Range is HK$48,000 ($6,200) cheaper than the Long Range in Hong Kong and hits 62 mph (100 km/h) in 5.6 seconds or 0.6s later than the dual-motor, all-wheel-drive model. Both have a top speed of 135 mph (217 km/h). Stepping up to the Long Range increases the range by 87 km (54 miles) to 542 km (337 miles) per WLTP.

It’s too soon to say whether the Model Y Long Range’s return is only a Hong Kong affair or other markets (presumably the RHD ones) will be getting the cheaper trim. Meanwhile, deliveries in HK are programmed to start in September according to Tesla’s regional configurator.
