It’s the beginning of the end for the NSX as Acura has kicked off production of the final 350 cars. These are being assembled in the Type S specification representing the most powerful car Honda’s luxury division has ever built. The electrified supercar is being put together at the factory in Marysville, Ohio and will be discontinued later this year after the VIN #350 is completed. Meanwhile, we get the opportunity to see the very first vehicle, carrying VIN #001.

Originally unveiled back in August 2021, the NSX’s swan song is limited to 300 units in the United States while the rest will be sold worldwide. The first one built comes in the exclusive Gotham Gray, the first matte paint on an Acura in the US, of which only 69 other cars will wear. Sold out in the US in just 24 hours after its reveal, the hybrid machine was available for $169,500 or $182,500 with the Lightweight Package.

The optional kit added goodies like carbon-ceramic brakes, a carbon-fiber interior trim, and a carbon-fiber engine cover to remove almost 58 pounds (26 kilograms). With or without it, the NSX Type S delivers 600 horsepower and 492 pound-feet of torque from its twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 engine working together with three electric motors.

Acura’s engineers have recalibrated the all-wheel-drive system and nine-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission to match the more powerful hybrid system. In addition, the combustion engine’s two turbos come from the NSX GT3 Evo race car while the battery pack’s useable capacity has been boosted by 20%. With more juice, the electric range should be slightly higher than before.

The hand-assembled NSX Type S gets unique five-spoke wheels measuring 20 inches and wrapped around in bespoke Pirelli P Zero tires. Compared to the regular model, the tracks have been widened at both front and rear axles where there are six- and four-piston Brembo brakes with red calipers, respectively.

These changes have allowed Acura to shave off two seconds from the lap time around Suzuka compared to the standard NSX. The gearshifts are 50% quicker than before and there’s a new Rapid Downshift mode, plus aero tweaks derived from the GT3-spec race car. The carbon-fiber roof comes standard, as does the aero kit for more downforce.

Acura has already hinted the NSX could return one day, and if it will, the supercar is likely going to be a pure EV.

It’s no secret that Honda will be coming out with the Prologue electric SUV in 2024 and that an equivalent Acura version is on the way as well. The model sold by the luxury brand will arrive slightly later that year, and while its name hasn’t been officially divulged, we might already know how it’s going to be called.

Acura’s parent company Honda filed to trademark the “ADX” moniker with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on December 22. That said, it’s not entirely clear whether this will be the name used by the zero-emissions SUV or it will end up as a badge on a vehicle equipped with a combustion engine. There is also a third plausible scenario as the Japanese brand could simply take preemptive measures and secure the name before it’s snatched up by a rival company.

That said, our money is on an Acura ADX mechanically twinned with the Honda Prologue. Both will ride on the Ultium platform developed by General Motors, which will also handle production. It is believed the Prologue will be put together at GM’s factory in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico while its ADX counterpart could be assembled in Spring Hill, Tennessee.

Aside from borrowing the underpinnings from GM, both electric SUVs will also get the powertrains and battery packs shared with the likes of the GMC Hummer EV pickup truck and SUV, Cadillac Lyriq, and other upcoming electric models from the North American conglomerate. Despite having similar bones, expect the two EVs from Honda and Acura to look considerably different not just when compared to GM products, but also different from one another.

With Honda already teasing the Prologue as well as talking about an annual sales target of 70,000 units, chances are we won’t have to wait much longer until Acura will also share details about its own version.

The Acura NSX Type S pictured here is the last hurrah for the electrified supercar as the mid-engined performance machine is being retired. Honda’s luxury division killed the RLX flagship sedan with its hybrid powertrain after the 2020 model year and the MDX crossover has lost its hybrid option for the latest generation. Consequently, the company has gradually abandoned hybrids. Why? Because it’s going all-in on EVs.

Following the launch of the reborn Integra sporty liftback in 2022, Acura will switch focus to purely electric models and therefore skip the strategy used by parent company Honda and its hybrid offerings. In an interview with Automotive News, assistant vice president of Acura national sales, Emile Korkor, expressed his optimism regarding Integra’s ability to lure in a new generation of buyers while the brand moves “into the new era.” He went on to specify “that new era is, of course, electrification.”

Korkor revealed plans to embrace EVs “much faster” than Honda by skipping the rollout of new hybrid models altogether going forward. Leading the way will be a battery-powered crossover riding on the Ultium platform developed by General Motors. It’s scheduled to arrive for the 2024 model year and utilize GM’s Ultium batteries.

While the equivalent Honda model will go by the name of Prologue, Acura hasn’t revealed the moniker it will use for its zero-emissions crossover. There’s a lot riding on the model since the company expects to sell approximately 30,000 units each year. In the long run, Korkor estimated purely electric vehicles will account for more than 50% of sales by the end of the decade or even 60%.

Honda e:N SUV, GT, Coupe electric concepts

Meanwhile, the unnamed Acura EV will enter production allegedly at GM’s Spring Hill Manufacturing plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee where it would be built alongside the Cadillac Lyriq. As for the Honda variant, the Prologue could also be assembled by GM, but in Mexico at its plant in Ramos Arizpe where the Chevy Equinox and Blazer are made.

Honda is working on its own dedicated electric car platform due to be inaugurated in 2025. Logic tells us Acura will also make use of the underpinnings to expand its EV portfolio in the second half of the decade.

Introduced with much fanfare in early 2015, the second-generation Acura NSX is being retired after fewer than 3,000 units sold globally. It’s going out with a proverbial bang as the Type S comes with an increased output from the hybrid setup, with both the combustion engine and electric motors benefitting from upgrades.

It now delivers a combined 600 horsepower and 492 pound-feet (667 Newton-meters) of torque from the 3.5-liter, twin-turbo V6 engine working together with three electric motors. Acura has installed the turbochargers from the NSX GT3 Evo race car while the usable capacity of the battery pack has increased by 20% compared to the regular model, translating into a slightly longer range in purely electric mode.

The total output has increased by 27 hp and 16 lb-ft (22 Nm), thus creating the most powerful road car Acura has ever developed. The nine-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission had to been retuned to cope with the added oomph coming from the hybrid powertrain. The gearbox now has a Rapid Downshift Mode promising to deliver “more aggressive automatic downshifting,” while Sport and Sport+ modes upshift even quicker than before. As for the Track mode, it has a higher rev threshold for downshifts.

Acura also fiddled with the dual motors at the front by lowering the gear ratio by 20%, which translates into more torque delivered to the wheels off the line, resulting in a more visceral launch. Beyond the revamped turbos, the V6 also has new intercoolers that can dissipate an extra 15% of heat while the upgraded fuel injectors have a 25% higher flow rate.

Beyond the overhauled hybrid setup, which includes a 10% higher battery output, the new NSX Type S gets different 19-inch front and 20-inch alloy wheels featuring a five-spoke design and increased tracks at the front and rear. The new shoes come wrapped in Pirelli P Zero tires created specifically for the mid-engined, all-wheel-drive supercar. Behind the wheels are Brembo brakes with six-piston calipers at the front axle and four-piston calipers at the back, painted in red.

While the NSX Type S costs $169,500, buyers can pay an extra $13,000 for the optional Lightweight Package, bringing Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes to shave off almost 58 pounds (26 kilograms) of weight over the stock brakes. The superior brakes come with calipers finished in orange, red, black, or silver. The optional kit also encompasses a glossy carbon-fiber engine cover and more carbon fiber inside. Overall, the Lightweight Package reduces weight by 57.8 lbs (26.2 kg).

As far as styling changes are concerned, the Type S welcomes a matte paint finish – a first for an Acura sold in North America. No fewer than 10 paint schemes will be available, including the new Gotham Gray featuring a clear matte metallic finish serving as the fifth layer to replace the glossy clearcoat used for regular paints.

The front bumper hosts enlarged air intake for better cooling while the rear bumper hosts a bigger carbon fiber diffuser for added downforce. Carbon fiber has been used extensively on the outside, including for the roof, front lower spoiler, side sills, and the deck lid spoiler at the back. Acura also changed the mesh in the front air intakes, replacing their resin construction with steel.

A glossy black finish has been applied onto the side mirror caps and door handles, while the exhaust finisher has a darker look. Dark-tinted headlights and taillights, a red engine cover, and black badges (a first for an Acura) round off the cosmetic changes on the outside. The cabin now benefits from an Alcantara headliner, Type S logos embroidered on the glove compartment and NSX emblems embossed on the headrests.

Production will be limited to 350 units, but only 300 examples are reserved for the United States. Of the total production run, just 70 will be painted in the Gotham Gray matte shade. The 2022 Acura NSX Type S is the third Type S model revealed by Honda’s premium brand this year and marks the end of the road for the iconic supercar.

Last year, General Motors and Honda announced plans to jointly work on new vehicles in North America with both combustion engines and electric powertrains. The decision was taken as a move to cut down development costs and speed up the engineering process by sharing vehicle platforms.

A new report from Automotive News alleges the two parties are deepening their ties as GM will allegedly assemble two electric crossovers for Honda and its luxury brand Acura. Citing “two people familiar with the plans,” AN says a Honda-badged EV will be manufactured in Mexico from 2023 at the factory in Ramos Arizpe where GM currently makes the Chevy Equinox and Blazer.

Come 2024, GM will also kick off production of an Acura electric crossover in Spring Hill, Tennessee where it would be built alongside the Cadillac Lyriq coming next year. Both Honda and Acura models are expected to utilize GM’s newly developed Ultium batteries that are being engineered to provide enough juice for 450 miles (724 kilometers) of range.

Contacted by Automotive News, both GM and Honda spokespersons refused to talk about the report, but it wouldn’t be all too surprising considering the companies are already working together. As per the original announcement made in April 2020, GM and Honda are working on two EVs based on a General Motors platform with Ultium batteries and unique Honda exterior and interior styling.

The platform is being modified to better cater to Honda’s profile, and the original announcement said the cars would be built by GM in North America. The same press release mentioned sales would commence for the 2024 model year in the United States and Canada.

While an official announcement has yet to be made about GM producing the two electric crossovers for the Japanese brands, a Honda spokesman did say the company “looks forward to sharing new information on our North American electrification strategy later this year.”
