General Motors is fast-tracking its transition to electric vehicles by launching a variety of EVs across several segments of the market. The newly developed Ultium platform serves as the backbone for the zero-emissions onslaught, and early signs are showing it’s a success. Even though the 2024 Silverado EV debuted less than a month ago, it has already racked up more than 110,000 reservations.

Meanwhile, the much more expensive GMC Hummer pickup truck together with its SUV equivalent have generated combined interest in excess of 59,000 reservations. At the same time, BrightDrop vans are also in high demand as more than 25,000 reservations have been made so far. No numbers have been provided for the Cadillac Lyriq of which customer deliveries are scheduled to begin in the coming months.

Bear in mind Chevrolet has already announced the Equinox EV and Blazer EV will go on sale during the 2024 model year, so GM has a lot on its plate when it comes to diversifying its electric offerings. To make it happen, the North American conglomerate has already invested more than $14 billion in 10 states across the country since 2020 and will spend a further $7 billion to boost battery cell and EV assembly capacity.

GM head honcho Mary Barra said one of the short-term objectives is to sell 400,000 purely electric vehicles in North America through 2023. However, the future looks grim for the Bolt EV and Bolt EUV as the factory in Orion Township, Michigan where the two are made will be repurposed for other products. It’s necessary to reach an overall target for 2026 of producing 600,000 electric trucks by the end of 2025.

Getting back to the Silverado EV, GM says more than 240 fleet operations have made reservations for the fullsize electric pickup. In addition, BrightDrop has lured in some big names, including Walmart and FedEx Express, which will be using their cargo vans. While no reservations numbers have been made public for the Lyriq, GM is happy to report it won’t organize a new round of reservations because the backlog is already pretty big. Instead, Cadillac will begin to take customer orders after the Debut Edition hits the market in March.

General Motors has already revealed plans for an ambitious EV rollout with exciting products such as the GMC Hummer EV truck/SUV, the Cadillac Lyriq, and zero-emissions versions of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups. However, there’s much more to come from GM in terms of electric offerings if we were to rely on a new report published this week by Automotive News.

According to the publication, GM will meet with investors next Wednesday, October 6, and talk about its future product strategy. No fewer than $35 billion will be invested through the middle of the decade on electric vehicles and autonomous cars, and we’ll learn more about them next week. The company has already committed to 30 new global EVs by 2025, and we should learn about their scheduled rollout after the meeting with investors.

Interestingly, the report goes on to say GM plans to tell investors it’s interested in becoming a software provider as much as it is focused on making electric cars. People familiar with the matter have told Automotive News that GM is confident the new strategy will lead to bigger revenues and higher profits, with more ambitious targets to be established in 2025 for the following five years.

While GM is working on a substantial EV program, the rollout of electric vehicles hasn’t exactly gone smoothly. The Chevy Bolt EV has been plagued with battery issues, forcing GM to temporarily stop production on August 23 after several recalls regarding fire hazards related to the LG Energy Solution-supplied battery.

While battery production has been resumed since then, the car itself won’t hit the assembly line until mid-October. The same goes for the newly introduced Bolt EUV, with both manufactured at GM’s Lake Orion Assembly factory in Michigan. Battery defects have been linked thus far to three injuries and a dozen of fires, prompting GM to ask owners of both Bolt models to limit charging the battery to 90% and avoid driving with fewer than 70 miles of range left. After charging the EV, owners are advised to park the car outside, and they shouldn’t charge the Bolt overnight indoors.

General Motors has announced this week plans for a massive investment at its Ramos Arizpe facility in Mexico where it will spend $1 billion. The plant where it currently assembles the Chevrolet Blazer and Equinox SUVs along with transmissions and engines is being retooled to prepare for the electric era. It didn’t take too long for the United Auto Workers (UAW) union to criticize GM for deciding to invest in Mexico rather than the United States.

GM has already issued an official response by sending a statement to UAW, reminding them about how it’s creating almost 9,000 new jobs and investing in excess of $9 billion for EVs and the necessary battery manufacturing. Meanwhile, the giant automaker is building a state-of-the-art paint shop in Mexico that will start operations next month at the Ramos Arizpe facility.

At the same plant, GM aims to manufacture batteries as well as electric components while making other upgrades to boost manufacturing efficiency. Confirmed details about the new EVs that will be built there are not available at this point, but it is believed two electric Chevrolet SUVs will enter production at the Mexican plant in 2023.

The report comes from Sam Fiorani, responsible with tracking upcoming vehicle production for AutoForecast Solutions. The pair of EVs at Ramos Arizpe would follow other electric vehicles scheduled to enter production at four different factories in the US and Canada. We’ll remind you the GMC Hummer pickup truck and SUV electric vehicles are coming, along with the Cadillac Lyriq SUV and a zero-emissions Chevrolet Silverado.

Ultimately, GM aims to stop sales of conventionally powered vehicles in the United States by the middle of the next decade. It’s more along the lines of an aspirational goal rather than a firm cutoff date for the internal combustion engine, but it’s pretty clear the main focus going forward will be on electrification.

Last year, General Motors and Honda announced plans to jointly work on new vehicles in North America with both combustion engines and electric powertrains. The decision was taken as a move to cut down development costs and speed up the engineering process by sharing vehicle platforms.

A new report from Automotive News alleges the two parties are deepening their ties as GM will allegedly assemble two electric crossovers for Honda and its luxury brand Acura. Citing “two people familiar with the plans,” AN says a Honda-badged EV will be manufactured in Mexico from 2023 at the factory in Ramos Arizpe where GM currently makes the Chevy Equinox and Blazer.

Come 2024, GM will also kick off production of an Acura electric crossover in Spring Hill, Tennessee where it would be built alongside the Cadillac Lyriq coming next year. Both Honda and Acura models are expected to utilize GM’s newly developed Ultium batteries that are being engineered to provide enough juice for 450 miles (724 kilometers) of range.

Contacted by Automotive News, both GM and Honda spokespersons refused to talk about the report, but it wouldn’t be all too surprising considering the companies are already working together. As per the original announcement made in April 2020, GM and Honda are working on two EVs based on a General Motors platform with Ultium batteries and unique Honda exterior and interior styling.

The platform is being modified to better cater to Honda’s profile, and the original announcement said the cars would be built by GM in North America. The same press release mentioned sales would commence for the 2024 model year in the United States and Canada.

While an official announcement has yet to be made about GM producing the two electric crossovers for the Japanese brands, a Honda spokesman did say the company “looks forward to sharing new information on our North American electrification strategy later this year.”
