Electrification is transforming the automotive industry, and it’s creating a level playing field among automakers. As electric powertrains feel similar, it’s easier for a budget-friendly electric vehicle to provide a premium driving experience compared to a budget car with a gas engine. While Hyundai already produces great driving cars, their latest model, the Ioniq 5 N, could be a car to watch out for, even for premium sports car manufacturers such as BMW.

According to Car and Driver, the South Korean automaker is working on a high-performance version of the Ioniq 5. The Ioniq 5 N is expected to have some impressive specs, making it a potential competitor to the 576 horsepower KIA EV6 GT. C&D claims that the Ioniq 5 N will likely have around 600 horsepower from its dual electric motors. Although there are no official specs available yet, this is exciting news for those who are eagerly anticipating its release.

The Ioniq 5 N is camouflaged in snowy test mules, making it hard to visualize the car’s final design. However, it’s expected to have sportier features, such as wider fenders, a lower front bumper, a rear diffuser, a lower ride height, and a small rear spoiler. The car is said to look playful in the snow, drifting around and shooting white rooster tails in the air.

Hyundai brought C&D along to test the Ioniq 5 N prototype, and it seems to be a promising little performance EV. It features an electronically controlled limited-slip differential at the rear axle, which helps shift torque between the rear wheels, providing exceptional lateral performance. Most EV manufacturers avoid additional diffs as they put a damper on efficiency, but when it comes to high-performance cars, lateral performance is more important than a small efficiency bump.

Former BMW M boss Albert Biermann is largely responsible for where Hyundai is today. The new Ioniq 5 N is a testament to what Biermann brought from BMW to Hyundai, making it a genuine rival for the Bavarians. The Ioniq 5 N is something that BMW should absolutely be keeping an eye on. To see just how far Hyundai has come in terms of making genuinely fun performance cars, check out the prototype drive review from C&D.

Today, Hyundai is introducing the Ioniq 6. The production-ready electric vehicle is finally here looking like no other electric sedan before it. It adopts the same pixel light theme as the Ioniq 5 crossover, lending the car a retro-futuristic appearance. Interesting enough, the Ioniq 6 comes with two spoilers.

Finished in black, the upper one incorporates a wide LED third brake light while the other mounted lower is neatly integrated into the trunk lid, positioned between the Hyundai badge and the prominent IONIQ 6 lettering. A closer look at the side profile shows door handles that remain flush with the bodywork for better airflow.

Cameras have replaced the bulky side mirrors, but of course, the are not road legal in all the countries. Traditional mirrors will be included in different markets.

Ioniq 6 sits on the E-GMP architecture conceived right from the beginning exclusively for zero-emissions models. Hyundai is not releasing any technical specifications for the time being, but the wheelbase does seem quite generous judging by the length of the rear doors.

The interior is also a wonderful mélange of past meets future by adopting a minimalist design with neon-like LED ambient lighting like a nightclub from the 1980s. It too gets side-by-side screens because that’s where the industry seems to be heading, but it still retains physical controls for the climate settings.

Hyundai’s EV onslaught isn’t stopping here as 2023 will see the introduction of the Ioniq 7 with three-row seating.

Hyundai is kicking its electrification plans into higher gear by announcing a massive investment of KRW 95.5 trillion until 2030. It works out to approximately $16 billion at current exchange rates and will allow the South Korean automotive conglomerate to roll out no fewer than 17 BEVs in the eight years ahead.

The main goal is to boost annual sales of electric vehicles to 1.87 million units by 2030, which is a considerable jump compared to the previous target. Hyundai had established an objective to sell about 560,000 EVs by 2035. By the end of the decade, the company aims to capture 7% of the global electric car market share.

In a bid to achieve its lofty goal, 11 Hyundai-badged models will be launched alongside six luxury EVs from its premium Genesis sub-brand. The mainstream lineup will boast three sedans, six SUVs, a light commercial vehicle, and a “new type model.” Leading the way is the Ioniq 6 sedan coming later this year as a production version of the Prophecy concept. From 2024, the large Ioniq 7 SUV will follow as a road-going SEVEN concept.

Hyundai SEVEN concept

As far as Genesis is concerned, it’s working on two passenger cars and four SUVs, including the already revealed Electrified GV70 due to hit the market later in 2022. From 2025, all the new Genesis models will be electrified to some extent.

In related news, Hyundai is announcing a new Integrated Modular Architecture (IMA) as an evolution of the current E-GMP platform. It’ll be inaugurated in 2025 for both regular models as well as “exclusive purpose-built vehicles” to cut costs and simplify production processes. Doing so will enable the IMA underpinnings to standardize the chassis, motor, and battery to maximize cost efficiency.

Meanwhile, work is underway for an over-the-air (OTA) update coming from late 2022 before being pushed throughout the whole lineup by 2025.

Following last year’s launch of the Ioniq 5 crossover, Hyundai is now putting the finishing touches on the Ioniq 6. The all-electric sedan was spotted as a heavily disguised prototype in front of a hotel in Lapland while it was resting after what must’ve been a test session. YouTuber Bjørn Nyland specialized in all things EVs was there after being invited by Nokian to test some winter tires.

The Finnish company told him the Tesla Model 3 rival was in a parking lot adjacent to the hotel. He jumped at the opportunity to check out the prototype with its aerodynamic wheels. The Hyundai Ioniq 6 was riding on slim 225/55 R18 tires at both front and rear axles, but we’re expecting the summer tires to be wider. In addition, the South Korean brand will likely offer bigger 19- and 20-inch sets of alloys.

Based on the dedicated E-GMP platform shared with the Kia EV6 and Genesis GV60, the Ioniq 6 is going for the four-door coupe look. Mirroring the Prophecy concept, it adopts pixel-like LED modules and appears to be hiding a trunk lid spoiler under that disguised bulge at the back. The headlights have a plaque saying “Ioniq 6” and you’ll notice the underbody is almost entirely closed to improve airflow.

The prototype had a 360-degree camera with front and rear modules as well as side ones mounted underneath the mirror caps.  Hiding under Velcro on the rear-right fender was seemingly the charging port, while the roof had a chunky fin antenna. Hyundai fully blacked out the rear windows and covered the interior to hide what must’ve been the production-ready cabin.

Debuting in the coming months, the 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 is said to come with a 77.4-kWh battery pack and an AWD setup with 300 hp on tap courtesy of two electric motors. The hotly anticipated EV supposedly measures 4,855 mm (191.1 in) in length, 1,880 mm (74 in) in width, and 1,495 mm (58.9 in) in height. The wheelbase stretches at 2,950 mm (116.1 in), which should enable ample legroom for passengers sitting in the back.

We’ve been hearing Hyundai plans to start production of its BMW i4 competitor in July at the Asan plant in South Korea.

Even though Hyundai introduced the Ioniq 5 in February 2021, the electric crossover is already receiving a significant update in Europe. While right now you can have the bespoke EV with a choice between either a 58- or 72.6-kWh battery, a bigger 77.4-kWh pack will be added later this year. If the battery’s capacity seems familiar, that’s because the Ioniq 5 sold in the United States already has it.

Another important change brought by the 2023 model year is the availability of side cameras to replace the traditional glass. The optional feature goes by the official name of Digital Side Mirrors (DSM) and has been available at home in South Korea since the Ioniq 5 was launched last year. It’s the first Hyundai in Europe to get this feature and aside from providing a clearer view of what’s behind, it also improves aerodynamic efficiency. It does so by reducing air resistance after replacing the bulky mirror caps with tiny cameras.

Since we’re on the subject of cameras, the Euro-spec Ioniq 5 is also gaining a Digital Center Mirror (DCM). The new piece of hardware is mounted below the crossover’s rear spoiler and will deliver an unobstructed, wide-angle view to diminish the risk of crashing into a car behind you. While the Digital Side Mirrors come with screens mounted on the door cards near the A-pillars, the Digital Center Mirror replaces the conventional center rearview mirror.

Another change coming to the 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 in Europe is the battery conditioning feature, which will automatically change the battery pack’s temperature on the go to guarantee the best charging conditions for when you arrive at the charging station. The system will prolong the charging performance of the battery, especially during the cold season. The EV turns on this feature the moment you enter a charging point in the navigation system.

For better comfort, Hyundai’s engineers have made tweaks to the Smart Frequency Dampers (SFD) function to optimize the response of both front and rear suspensions. The 2023 model year will also come along with the possibility to order unpainted black bumpers with black garnishes combined with the Projection LED lights.

Hyundai will have the revised Ioniq 5 on sale in Europe in the latter half of the year.

2021 was the year when Hyundai unveiled the Ioniq 5 in production form and the Ioniq 7 as a concept. 2022 will bring us the road-going Ioniq 6 as a follow-up to the gorgeous Prophecy concept pictured here. Ahead of its official reveal in the coming months, yet-to-be-confirmed technical specifications have emerged, but take them with a proverbial pinch of salt.

Without further ado, the all-electric sedan is apparently 4,855 millimeters (191.1 inches) long, 1,880 mm (74 in) wide, and 1,495 mm (58.9 in) tall. It makes it a tad shorter and wider than a Sonata while being slightly taller compared to the combustion-engined midsize sedan. As far as the wheelbase is concerned, the Ioniq 6 measures 2,950 mm (116.1 in) between the axles, thus making it 110 mm (4.3 in) longer than the Sonata.

According to previous reports, Hyundai pushed back the Ioniq 6 by three months to modify the design and stretch the car by 20 mm (0.8 in). It is believed both front and rear bumpers have been resculpted in a bid to boost the vehicle’s maximum range. For the same reason, the battery has apparently been bumped to a 77.4-kWh capacity to unlock extra range.

If the reports are to be believed, production will commence at the company’s Asan factory in South Korea this July. At launch, the range-topping version is said to have a little over 300 horsepower and all-wheel drive. It will be the fourth model to ride on the E-GMP platform, after the Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, and the Genesis GV60.

As with the Tesla Model 3 rival, we’re expecting to have a sedan body style instead of a more practical liftback like the BMW i4. The electric sedan should have a better range than the Ioniq 5 thanks to a lower, sleeker shape, but that remains to be seen. Much like the EVs we mentioned, the Ioniq 6 should be a truly global model following its initial rollout at home in Korea in the latter half of 2022.

On its road to carbon neutrality, Hyundai has announced plans to sell only electric vehicles in Europe by 2035 and discontinue the combustion engine in major markets around the world by 2040. It recently disclosed there’s a second dedicated electric car platform in the works, which will join the E-GMP architecture at one point.

Not only that, but the South Korean brand has hinted development of new internal combustion engines has pretty much ended. Hyundai’s ICE efforts will be limited to making current gasoline and diesel units cleaner and more efficient to meet stricter emissions regulations such as Euro 7 arriving in the latter half of the decade. A new report from Business Korea goes as far as to say the Hyundai Motor Group as a whole has “abruptly abolished” its engine development center.

The Namyang Research Institute was allegedly overhauled earlier this month when the Powertrain Team was transformed into the Electrification Development Team, thus signaling plans to channel all R&D efforts into EVs. According to the same report, the Engine Development Center previously responsible for new gasoline and diesel units has been “completely shut down” before being converted for electric drivetrains.

At the same Namyang R&D center, a new Battery Development Center was implemented with the sole focus of finding ways to perfect battery technology for future zero-emissions applications. In early November, Hyundai (and Kia) teamed up with Factorial Energy to jointly work on solid-state battery tech. When these will finally be ready to hit the market, expect EVs to have a lot more range and charge considerably quicker. At the same time, safety issues associated with conventional lithium-ion batteries and their highly flammable liquid electrolyte will become a thing of the past.

Business Korea goes on to say Hyundai has “torn down walls among R&D departments” by unifying the Project Management and the Integrated Product Development teams in a bid to speed up the development of purely electric vehicles.

With Hyundai planning to become a purely electric brand in Europe by 2035 and in most major markets five years later, it can’t build its EV portfolio by relying strictly on the E-GMP platform. The dedicated electric car architecture has underpinned the Ioniq 5 crossover released this year, followed by the Ioniq 6 sedan in 2022, and the seven-seat Ioniq 7 arriving in early 2024. The latter was previewed last month by the SEVEN concept as a three-row SUV.

Plans are in motion for at least ten more EVs scheduled to arrive by 2026, some of which will be electric adaptations of existing models. In addition, the South Korean brand is announcing plans for a second bespoke platform for zero-emissions models. The important disclosure was made this week by Hyundai CEO Jaehoon Chang in an interview with Automotive News Europe:

“We are not simply looking at only one platform [E-GMP]. We are expanding our volume for EVs. And we have a plan for how we can do that.”

Hyundai SEVEN concept

He refrained from going into any details about the new underpinnings, but he did admit Hyundai is eager to transition to EVs “as fast as possible” by gradually discontinuing its products powered by combustion engines. To make it happen, the company will invest $7.4 billion in electrification in the United States by the middle of the decade, with an announcement regarding a boost in production output to be made in 2022.

Hyundai has pretty much finished with the development of combustion engines as it will not introduce any all-new units. Instead, its existing gasoline and diesel powertrains will be tweaked to meet increasingly stringent emissions regulations such as the Euro 7 standard expected in the second half of the decade. In the meantime, the engineers are pursuing solid-state batteries, but CEO Jaehoon Chang suggested the technology is unlikely to arrive on a production model before 2030.

Hyundai SEVEN concept

He went on to mention “we are focusing on EVs from now on,” and that includes Kia and luxury brand Genesis as well. The former unveiled the EV6 earlier this year and previewed the EV9 in November as a sister model of the Hyundai SEVEN concept. As for Genesis, the GV60 also came out this year as a crossover mechanically related to the Ioniq 5 and EV6.

In addition, the high-end marque has introduced the Electrified GV70 crossover, which rumors state could be built in the United States at Hyundai’s factory in Alabama from early next year. The third EV unveiled by Genesis this year was the Electrified G80, which much like the Electrified GV70, is essentially an electric adaptation of the regular model powered by combustion engines.

What’s old is new at Hyundai as after giving the Pony a modern-day electric revival for a one-off concept earlier this year, it has done the same for the Grandeur. The first-generation sedan has been brought back as a stunning EV part of the Heritage Series celebrating the company’s past. An official premiere took place earlier this month and now the gorgeous flagship stars in a walkaround video shot at home in South Korea.

The pixel LED light motif of the Pony concept and Ioniq 5 has been adopted by the Grandeur and you can see it not just for the headlights and taillights, but also on the sides for the turn signals. The little squares have been embedded into the sides of the front bumper as well as in the shiny side caps containing the rearview cameras. Despite being modernized, it’s still a faithful interpretation of the original sedan launched all the way back in 1986 as a rebadged Mitsubishi Debonair.

Even the wheel design takes after the classic sedan, but with a big shield-like cover mimicking the aerodynamic wheels that are becoming more popular on electric cars to boost efficiency. The Grandeur Heritage Series electric concept has retained the quarter glass of its source of inspiration and the overall boxy body shape in a superb mélange of old and new.

While the exterior is a subtle evolution of the 1986 model, the cabin has been overhauled with an ultra-widescreen dominating the dashboard. Mind you, those are not two displays joined together, but rather a one-piece screen covering most of the dash. The steering wheel mimics the design used by the first Grandeur, but with modern controls on the sides and a built-in display in the lower spoke.

The ambient lighting with the LED blue strips is a nice touch, much like the velvet seats with leather straps at the back. Hyundai hasn’t mentioned whether the vehicle was built from scratch or the engineers actually used a first-gen Grandeur chassis to create the Heritage concept. It is a legit electric car with a functional charging port, complete with illuminated pixels showing the state of charge as implemented in the Ioniq 5.

While this is purely a concept car, rumor has it there are plans for a purely electric sedan with a Grandeur Heritage-inspired design due as early as 2023. It is said the retro-flavored EV will complement the seventh-generation Grandeur, which will retain the internal combustion engine. However, this is only a rumor at this point, so take it with the proverbial pinch of salt for the time being.

Unveiled with great fanfare earlier this week at the 2021 Los Angeles Auto Show, the SEVEN concept foretells a three-row electric SUV coming in 2024 with the Ioniq 7 name. Exactly how the showcar will morph into the production model? Two members of the company’s design team provided juicy details in an interview with Car and Driver.

Hyundai’s global chief of design, SangYup Lee, along with the head of the styling group, Simon Loasby, suggested the two will have a lot in common. They made the analogy between how the Concept 45 became the Ioniq 5, suggesting the SEVEN concept and Ioniq 7 will also be very much alike. For example, the pixel light motif will have a counterpart on the production model, and so will the general boxy shape of the vehicle.

The massive rear glass of the tailgate is unlikely to make it to the production model, and Hyundai said the same will hold true for the corporate badge sitting flush with the hood on the SEVEN concept. In addition, the showcar’s side cameras will be replaced by conventional mirrors, while underneath the front hood there will be a cargo area.

The South Korean marque went on to specify the cabin will go through significant changes since the concept’s lounge-like atmosphere was developed to highlight the SEVEN’s level 4 autonomous driving system. Needless to say, such a sophisticated setup won’t be ready in three years’ time since we haven’t even reached level 3 yet on a production vehicle.

That said, C&D has learned from the two high-ranked people from Hyundai’s design team that the concept’s oval cutouts in the door cards will be carried over to some extent on the Ioniq 7. While the automaker is keen on the idea of using the SEVEN’s wool upholstery on the final product, there are concerns buyers are not going to warm up to the idea of having wool inside their cars. The same goes for the bamboo silk carpets and bamboo wood trim, which are also unlikely to make it to production.
