February 15, 2021, marked the beginning of the end for Jaguar models with combustion engines as the British company vowed to go purely electric from 2025. The announcement was made as part of Jaguar Land Rover’s Reimagine strategy, which includes six Land Rover EVs due to arrive from 2024 onwards. While JLR CEO Thierry Bolloré initially considered acquiring the rights to use a platform from a third party, that won’t be the case anymore.

Speaking with investors this week, JLR’s head honcho said the automaker must have an architecture able to combine the design and performance capabilities no other EV can offer right now. For this reason, the new dedicated electric car platform is being engineered in-house to cater to Jaguar perfectly and its zero-emission ambitions from 2025 onwards.

He went on to say giving future Jaguar models a “unique proportion” represents a priority, hence why they’ll be taking matters into their own hands to develop the new architecture. It goes by the name of Panthera and will share some of the hardware with other JLR platforms to drive down costs and speed up development.

Jaguar will be moving upmarket in the EV era by becoming a lower-volume brand with higher-priced luxury vehicles. The only model to survive from the old guard will be the I-Pace, but even that one will be seen as a separate member of the fresh lineup consisting of all-new EVs. The company’s head honcho promised there will be no overlap between cars and that “proportions are crucial” in the grand scheme of things.

Some of the software, battery packs, and electric motors could be shared between Jaguar and Land Rover models to achieve economies of scale. It’s widely believed the overhauled Jaguar brand will go up against elite marques including Bentley, at least as far as pricing is concerned. It remains to be seen whether there will be room for another brand to take on the peeps from Crewe, which have pledged to ditch gasoline engines by 2030.

Despite years of development and a huge financial investment, Jaguar scrapped plans for an all-electric XJ sedan just months before unveiling what was to become its new flagship. The British luxury brand never really motivated why such a drastic and hugely surprising decision was taken, especially in the context of the company’s promise to switch to an EV-only lineup from 2025.

Thankfully, Jaguar Land Rover CEO Thierry Bolloré has now explained in a new interview with Autocar why the XJ had to die even though the teaser campaign had already started. Interestingly, the fullsize luxury sedan was axed within the first month of his arrival as JLR’s head honcho. Why? Because it “was a completely different kind of car from the ones we are proposing – different in technology, battery chemistry, electronics, size, performance, and market position. ” He went on to mention the electric luxobarge “would never have suited our plans.”

It’s interesting the XJ – a traditional sedan – has been terminated seeing as how Jaguar has vowed to keep only one SUV in its lineup in the electric era. Why? Because the Land Rover brand has the SUV segment well-covered, and parent company Tata Motors wants to avoid the risk of cannibalizing sales. Of the existing models, only the I-Pace will survive post-2025, meaning all future electric models will be something different than sport utility vehicles. A large sedan would fit that bill nicely, but the XJ that had been developed extensively won’t be one of them.

Jaguar hasn’t finalized all the details regarding its exclusively electric portfolio of models arriving from the middle of the decade, but its CEO noted the chances of a sports car to replace today’s F-Type are slim. The ones that are coming will ride on a dedicated EV platform co-developed with a partner, and Thierry Bolloré didn’t exclude the possibility of concept cars to preview the future production models.

None other than Enzo Ferrari himself described the Jaguar E-Type as being the most beautiful car in the world. It’s easy to see why as the iconic sports car remains achingly gorgeous even after half a century since its launch. There’s no place for a six-cylinder, let alone a V12 version of the legendary British machine in the electric era, but UK-based Electrogenic has now futureproofed the E-Type.

Making its public debut at the London Classic Car Show (June 25-27), the all-electric E-Type is offered in multiple specifications. The base version goes by the name of Tourer and is actually lighter than the original model despite the extra heft commanded by the added batteries. Electrogenic claims handling has been improved as a result of the lower weight, while performance is also better. It’s worth noting that despite being covered to electric power, the E-Type retains its original manual gearbox.

Stepping up to the Sprint model upgrades the electric powertrain to a generous 470 Newton-meters (347 pound-feet) of instant torque. Once again, the electric punch is delivered through the original manual transmission. It weighs roughly the same as the Jaguar’s version but is actually quicker than the gasoline-fueled model. Electrogenic says those opting for the E-Type Sprint should upgrade the suspension and brakes to cope with the extra muscle.

The range-topping Grand Tourer gets rid of the manual transmission and boosts the electric setup to a massive 402 horsepower (300 kilowatts) and 600 Nm (443 lb-ft). As it would be fitting given its GT nature, this version can travel for up to 250 miles between charges whereas the other two have enough juice for 150 miles. Alternatively, the Tourer and Sprint can be fitted with a range-extending setup unlocking an additional 50 miles.

As far as pricing is concerned, you can imagine these conversions are not exactly cheap. The E-Type Tourer starts at £54,000 plus value-added tax (VAT) and the donor car, followed by the Sprint at £62,000 and the flagship Grand Tourer at £80,000. These prices work out to approximately $75,000, $86,200, and $112,000 at current exchange rates, respectively.

Electrogenic notes the electric conversion doesn’t require any changes to the E-Type’s superb bodywork as the newly added hardware is integrated using the original engine mounts. It means the EV conversion can be reversed if the owner decided to put the combustion engine back again. The interior also remains mainly faithful to the original as the only changes made are for the dials and switches repurposed for the car’s electric nature. As an example, the fuel gauge now shows the battery charge.

The showcar Electrogenic has on display in London is a 1967 Series 1¼ Jaguar E-Type Coupe, meaning it’s based on the Series 1 model. The original car was mostly for the United States, and the one featured at the show was modified with different headlights resembling those of the Series 1.5 model.

It’s a known fact by now that Jaguar will become a purely electric brand in 2025. The existing cars powered by combustion engines will be updated but will not live to see a new generation. As for the I-Pace, it will be the sole survivor among current models as the British brand has vowed to keep it alive in the latter half of the decade.

In a new interview with Autocar magazine, company boss Thierry Bolloré provided some interesting details about the road Jaguar will take in the electric era. The main goal is to develop “distinct cars with no overlap,” so future models will not clash with electric Land Rover-badged vehicles. The I-Pace featured here will live past 2025 and is going to be “permanently and significantly updated,” but it will be considered a separate product from the new wave of EVs.

To that end, Jaguar says it will not be coming out with electric crossovers and SUVs. Instead, its future EVs will be lower-riding vehicles, ones that will not have any direct rivals. With this bold strategy, the troubled British luxury brand won’t necessarily target higher volumes than today, but the firm’s head honcho argues sales should increase in the aftermath of the combustion engine’s demise.

To make it all happen, Jaguar needs to either engineer its own dedicated EV platform or purchase the underpinnings from a different company. It has to be a modular platform tailored to its requirements as Bolloré told Autocar the engineers must have the freedom to alter the size as needed to accommodate a variety of products. He went on to say the “proportions are crucial to get what we want from Jaguar.”

As to why the next-generation XJ fullsize sedan was canceled at the last moment, Bolloré mentioned it was the hardest decision he had to take as part of the plan to reinvent Jaguar. He explained that being electric was the only trait it had in common with the direction the company will be taking starting in 2025.

The Jaguar I-Pace has been around for approximately three years and now the time has come for the stylish electric crossover to get a few updates. It might look virtually the same on the outside, but there’s a new Atlas Grey grille tip finish and an optional Bright Pack with several design accents like satin chrome window surrounds and an Atlas Gray finish for the rear diffuser.

For the 2022 model year, the I-Pace will be offered in the United States in shades such as Portofino Blue, Caldera Red, Aruba, and Eiger Grey. Bear in mind Jaguar will be selling the luxurious zero-emissions SUV exclusively in the top-spec HSE trim going forward in the US, with a starting price of $69,900 before the $1,150 destination charges.

Stepping inside the cabin, the 2022 I-Pace comes fitted with the latest version of Jaguar’s Pivi Pro infotainment system featuring a simplified menu structure as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. It supports over-the-air updates, which will also be available for the battery management and charging to effectively make the electric crossover better post-purchase.

Speaking of charging, the US-spec I-Pace will come bundled from now on with an 11 kW onboard charger, while using a 100-kW charger will give you 63 miles of range in just 15 minutes. Much like before, the dual-motor setup provides a combined 394 horsepower and 512 pound-feet of torque, good for a sprint to 60 mph in just four and a half seconds.

There are more changes than meets the eye as the 2022 model year comes along with cabin air ionization with PM2.5 filtration. In addition, the standard equipment list now includes 16-way heated and cooled leather front seats, 20-inch wheels with a five-spoke design and glossy dark gray finish, along with a powered tailgate and LED headlights.

Jaguar will also throw in an 825-watt, 16-speaker Meridian sound system with a subwoofer, while the standard safety array of systems includes everything from adaptive cruise control (with steering assist and stop & go) to blind spot assist. The 2022 I-Pace also boasts a head-up display, emergency braking, lane keep assist, traffic sign recognition, and adaptive speed limiter.

The I-Pace has not been getting the attention it deserves in recent times. Maybe it is because the EV segment is heating up and Jaguar is not responding as it should with updates for its electric crossover to keep up the pace (pun intended) with newer competitors. Thankfully, the company’s first production electric vehicle is now making the headlines courtesy of a collaboration with Google.

Meet the very first Google Street View car that lacks a combustion engine. The I-Pace does more than just map streets as it also boasts a built-in sensor to measure air quality. The zero-emissions crossover is being put to work in Dublin, Ireland where it will remain for the next 12 months. During this interval, Jag’s EV will measure nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, as well as fine particles (PM2.5).

To turn the I-Pace into a Google Street View car, Jaguar has worked with the tech giant to fit the electric SUV with roof mountings for the camera. In addition, the rear window glass had to undergo changes to accommodate the necessary wiring. There’s also new switchgear to control the camera from the inside and faithfully map the streets of Dublin.

It is a small but important step Jaguar is making as parent company Jaguar Land Rover (owned by Tata Motors) is working towards becoming a carbon-neutral business by 2039. To get there, the Jaguar brand will switch to an all-electric lineup from 2025 while Land Rover will gradually electrify the Defender, Discovery, and Range Rover series.

A purely electric XJ sedan was supposed to come out later this year, but newly appointed Chief Executive Officer, Thierry Bolloré, has axed the project. It is safe to assume the I-Pace has a future in Jaguar’s lineup since the company will be transitioning to EV-only offerings in only three years. The electric SUV was last updated last month in the UK when it received a Black Edition with dark styling accents, while recent trademark leaks hint at the impending arrival of a facelifted version.

Meanwhile, this I-Pace will be roaming the streets of Ireland’s capital at a slow place, so it won’t be using its full 394 horsepower and 512 pound-feet of torque. Using the same logic, it goes without saying Google is certainly not going to test the 4.5-second sprint to 60 mph of the electric crossover as the latest Street View car will be driven at low speeds.

Jaguar Land Rover has already announced plans for an EV onslaught by introducing six purely electric vehicles across the Range Rover, Discovery, and Defender lineups within the next five years. A new report from Automotive News Europe states a zero-emissions variant of the Range Rover luxury SUV will lead the way, earmarked for a market launch sometime in 2024.

Meanwhile, the next-generation Range Rover is going to be introduced later in 2021 with a hybrid powertrain by combining a combustion engine with an electric motor. The future EV model will ride on Jaguar Land Rover’s newly developed Modular Longitudinal Architecture, which was supposed to debut in the following months on the all-new Jaguar XJ. However, the electric luxury sedan was canceled at the last moment, despite Jaguar’s intention to become a purely EV brand from 2025.

Starting from scratch with a platform tailored to electric vehicles would take a lot of effort, time, and most importantly, money. By finding a partner, Jaguar would be able to speed up development and reduce costs by achieving economies of scale, hence why the CEO Thierry Bollore says the company is already in talks “with a selection of actors” for a potential tie-up.

Interestingly, Jaguar’s head honcho says selecting the partner will depend on whether the hardware provided by the automakers will be compatible with the designs elaborated by Gerry McGovern, JLR’s head of design. In a separate interview with Automotive News Europe, Bollore said the platform “has to respect the proportion of the designs.”

McGovern has promised future Jaguar production models will be “absolutely modern and contemporary,” adding the cars “shouldn’t be retrospective at all and shouldn’t emulate anyone.”

Tata Motors-owned Jaguar Land Rover has revealed its new global strategy dubbed “Reimagine” with a focus on going green. The most important news shared today is about the Jaguar luxury brand going exclusively electric by the middle of the decade. In approximately four years from now, there will be no more cars bearing the leaping jaguar badge with combustion engines.

We’re being promised “a dramatically beautiful new portfolio of emotionally engaging designs and pioneering next-generation technologies.” There is some bad news in all of this as the next-generation XJ fullsize electric sedan has been axed even before being officially revealed. Jaguar had been testing prototypes for a while, but there won’t be a production version after all. However, the British marque claims it will retain the “XJ” nameplate, suggesting it might come back at one point in the future.

“Reimagine” is more than just a zero-emissions Jaguar brand as all JLR nameplates will be available as EVs by the end of the decade. In the next five years, the Land Rover brand will unveil six purely electric vehicles for its three families of models: Range Rover, Discovery, and Defender. The first of the bunch is programmed to premiere in 2024.

In the long run, Jaguar Land Rover as a whole aims to go entirely electric and achieve net-zero carbon emissions across its supply chain, production, and operations by 2039. Meanwhile, the conglomerate is developing hydrogen technology and will have fuel cell prototypes testing on public roads in the United Kingdom within the next 12 months.

During an online presentation held earlier today, Jaguar Land Rover CEO Thierry Bollore also revealed plans to gradually phase out diesel engines to ensure a cleaner product portfolio. “Reimagine” is also about simplification as JLR will switch to just three global vehicle architectures going forward while retaining all of its core manufacturing facilities.

When the BMW iX finally makes its official debut, it’s going to have some stiff competition right out of the gate. For starters, there’s the aging but still range-leading Tesla Model X, Audi e-tron and Mustang Mach E to contend with. However, it will also be gaining a new competitor — the Jaguar J-Pace.

According to Auto Express, Jaguar is working on not only another electric SUV but is actually working on becoming a fully electric brand. The next step in that process is the Jaguar J-Pace, a fully-electric SUV that’s similar in size to the current F-Pace SUV and larger than the I-Pace electric car. So that would size it with the BMW iX.

While the J-Pace will be built on Jaguar’s modular, flexible architecture — one that will include both electrified and internal combustion powertrains — the J-Pace will be an all-electric model, with no piston engine option. According to this report, the Jaguar J-Pace will use a 100 kWh battery pack and should have around 300 miles of WLTP-rated range. So its specs are almost identical to those of the BMW iX.

Expect styling of the J-Pace to be similar to its smaller I-Pace sibling, which is a very good thing. The I-Pace is a stunning looking machine, with just enough futuristic styling and just enough of Jag’s familial design language. It’s both sexy and efficient looking and one of the best looking EVs on the market, if not the best looking EV. So expect the J-Pace to try and capitalize on the I-Pace’s styling success.

It will be interesting to see how the Jaguar J-Pace competes in the segment. The BMW iX is already going to be slightly behind the segment, with the Model X already having better range for similar money. So when the J-Pace eventually debuts, which will be long after the iX, it will be even further behind. Still, we’re happy to hear that Jaguar is not only developing a new EV but looking to make the switch to electrification entirely.

While we’re patiently waiting for Jaguar to bring back the XJ flagship as an electric vehicle, the Tata Motors-owned British brand is showing another EV, but this one technically is not real. That’s because the low-slung hypercar featured here is a pipe dream portraying a zero-emissions, high-performance beast we’ll only see in the Gran Turismo video game next year.

The sleek Vision Gran Turismo SV takes the shape of an electric race car benefitting from the Formula E expertise gained by the Jaguar Racing team. It has been “developed” exclusively in the virtual realm and perfected using the latest simulation tools to refine the body and bring the drag coefficient down to only 0.398. That might not seem impressive compared to road cars such as the Mercedes CLA (0.23), but for a race car, Jaguar points out it’s a “remarkably low” figure.

It’s worth mentioning the virtual concept is not entirely new as it serves as a more hardcore continuation of last year’s non-SV Vision Gran Turismo. It offers a neck-twisting electric punch of 1,903 horsepower (1,400 kilowatts) and a rather unbelievable torque of 2,478 pound-feet (3,360 Newton-meters), which kicks in instantly as with all other EVs.

You can imagine the digital race car has been projected to offer mind-bending performance, with the 0-60 mph sprint simulated to take merely 1.65 seconds. Top speed? That would have to be 255 mph (410 km/h) thanks to four electric motors sending power to both axles in a rather huge car, stretching at 5,540 mm (18.1 feet) long.

While the styling makes the Vision Gran Turismo SV suitable to star in a Sci-Fi movie, Jaguar says its design team took inspiration from the past. That deployable rear wing takes after the XJR-14, a race car from the early 1990s developed for the World Sportscar Championship. Going back in time furthermore, it also pays homage to the 1988 XJR-9 as well as classic models such as the 1954 D-Type and the 1951 C-Type.

It would be futile to expect a production version, but the silver lining is Jaguar has built a full-size scale model of the virtual racer. Should you happen to have a PlayStation in your living room, the Vision Gran Turismo SV will be included in Gran Turismo sometime in 2021. We don’t know whether it will star in the current title – Gran Turismo Sport – or the hotly anticipated Gran Turismo 7 on the PS5.
