A few months back, Polestar unveiled the O2 concept, a gorgeous EV roadster. It was the talk of the town for several days, as car enthusiasts were in love with its modern, sleek, top-down design. At the time, Polestar didn’t confirm whether or not it would build the stunning convertible but now, it’s been confirmed. The O2 concept will officially become the Polestar 6 and it’s a gorgeous one.

Let’s start with what the Polestar 6 is. It’s an all-wheel drive, dual-motor, all-electric, two-seat roadster with a futuristic design and tons of power. It looks every bit like a Polestar while also separating itself from the brand’s other vehicles. It’s a lovely piece of automotive design and one that most brands should be envious of.

Under that breathtaking sheet metal is a bespoke, bonded EV architecture that provides 800-volt charging and dual electric motors. The official figures of the Polestar 6 are a whopping 884 horsepower and 663 lb-ft of torque. According to Polestar, it will reach 0-602 mph in 3.2 seconds, which sounds incredibly conservative. Unless it weighs as much as nuclear submarine, the Polestar 6 should break into the high twos to 60 mph. Polestar also claims a top speed of 155 mph but that doesn’t matter as much in an EV.

When the Polestar 6 comes out, it’s also going to do something many automakers have never done—beat Tesla to the punch. Tesla has been boasting about how fast its theoretical new Roadster is for years, despite never actually building it. However, the Polestar 6 will not only debut first, it will probably get a mid-cycle update before the Tesla Roadster debuts, if it ever does at all.

Volvo’s electric spin-off Polestar is a relatively new brand, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise the lovely O₂ concept is only the firm’s second showcar ever. It follows in on the Precept’s footsteps by adopting a similar design language, but adapted for a roadster body style. It has impressively short front and rear overhangs as one would expect from a dedicated EV.

The low-slung convertible with a fairly wide body perfected to maximize aerodynamics hosts a 2+2 cabin. Interestingly, it rides on a bonded aluminum platform borrowed from the Polestar 5, a four-door electric gran turismo that won’t go on sale until 2024 as a production-ready Precept. The architecture is being developed in-house by a team based in the United Kingdom and aims to deliver high levels of rigidity and tight body control to sharpen up handling.

The sleek taillights serve a double purpose as they also work as air blades to diminish turbulence behind the vehicle. Polestar has fitted the O₂ concept with built-in ducts for better airflow over the side profile and wheels to improve efficiency and achieve a greater range between charging cycles. Typical of a dedicated EV, it has a long wheelbase in relation to the overall length, thus creating a cabin spacious enough to accommodate rear seats.

Speaking of the interior, it makes extensive use of a newly developed thermoplastic mono-material. If you’re unfamiliar with the term, it refers to a single base material to manufacture multiple components installed throughout the cabin. All of the soft-touch areas inside rely solely on recycled polyester.

Behind the rear seats is a nifty autonomous cinematic drone that can follow the Polestar O₂ concept at speeds of up to 90 km/h (56 mph). Once filming is done, the driver can park the car and edit the footage by using the massive 15-inch touchscreen of the infotainment system.

Sadly, there’s no word about putting the concept into production.

There is a common misconception EVs will save the world because there are no emissions as opposed to a traditional car powered by a combustion engine. However, an electric vehicle still puts a strain on our already fragile nature during the manufacturing process. Volvo’s spin-off Polestar is now looking into developing a truly climate-neutral car that will not harm the environment in any way.

Known as the Polestar 0 Project, the initiative is a joint effort with some of the most important automotive suppliers. ZF, Autoliv, SSAB, ZKW, and Hydro have all come together to help the Swedish EV marque in its quest to conceive a nature-friendly vehicle. ZF intends to deliver the necessary automotive systems for the electric powertrain in a bid to eliminate carbon emissions and save precious resources at the same time.

Autoliv will help Polestar by providing safety equipment, including seatbelts and airbags for which the manufacturing process will be emissions-free. SSAB has agreed to provide fossil-free steel, which ideally, will go on to replace the regular steel used today in the car industry. The bigger goal is to replace additional materials that generate a lot of carbon emissions.

As for ZKW, it will assist Polestar by supplying the necessary electrical control systems and wiring. At the same time, Hydro has pledged to deliver zero-carbon aluminum necessary for the EV’s construction.

Meanwhile, other automotive suppliers as well as investors and governments have been invited to join the partnership. Polestar is asking researchers and non-governmental organizations to take part in the development of the world’s first climate-neutral car. The Geely-owned company has signed Letters of Intent with each of the partners that have agreed to work on the ambitious project. Interested parties have until March 23 to support Polestar’s cause.

The ultimate goal is to engineer a climate-neutral EV by the end of the decade.

Volvo’s electric spin-off introduced an over-the-air update earlier this year that brought slightly more range and quicker charging, among other tweaks. A second OTA arrived a few months later, bringing digital key technology to the five-door electric liftback by turning the owner’s smartphone into an alternative to the conventional key fob. Fast forward to December, a third and more substantial software revision is being launched in some European markets.

Available for the punchy Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor version, the OTA update consists of software-based tuning to extract a substantial 67 horsepower (50 kilowatts) and 20 Newton-meters (15 pound-feet) of torque from the pair of electric motors.  With the upgraded software in place, the car now packs an impressive 470 hp (350 kW) and 680 Nm (502 lb-ft).

The OTA update was actually rolled out in late November, but it’s only now the company is making the news official. The software was previewed earlier this year when the Polestar 2 experimental prototype was introduced at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Courtesy of the newly gained oomph, the sprint to 62 mph (100 km/h) has decreased to 4.4 seconds.

It is worth mentioning the additional power is not available at all times as it only kicks in as a boost while the Polestar 2 is doing anywhere between 43 to 81 mph (70 to 130 km/h). That translates to quicker acceleration in the mid-range, enabling the zero-emissions hatchback to complete the run from 50 to 75 mph (80 to 120 km/h) in only 2.2 seconds or half a second quicker than before the OTA update.

The Polestar performance software upgrade is offered through the Polestar Extras webshop in the following countries: Austria, Germany, UK, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Finland, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. Additional markets will be added in due course, including the United States and Canada where it’s programmed to arrive next spring.

Meanwhile, the OTA update costs about €1,000 on average in the aforementioned Euro markets.

It was only a few hours ago when we discussed how the next-generation Volvo XC90 could be called Embla and now its mechanically related Polestar model is being teased. It’s not the first preview of the electric SUV, but it’s by far the most revealing so far since it shows a production-ready prototype featuring a thin body wrap leaving little to the imagination.

While parent company Volvo will sell the midsize zero-emissions SUV with three-row seating, Polestar won’t be doing the same since its own version will be sportier and likely a tad lighter by coming only with two rows. Even if it’s fully disguised, the vehicle shows a swoopy shape whereas the equivalent XC90 / Embla will be boxier and therefore roomier on the inside.

Both of them will share the assembly line at the factory located in Charleston, South Carolina where the electric SUVs are scheduled to enter production in 2022. The first Polestar to be built in North America is going to feature a LIDAR sensor and NVIDIA computing power to give the vehicle a highly advanced autonomous driving system on the highway.

The Polestar 3 has been previously confirmed to feature a more powerful dual-motor setup than its Volvo counterpart and will come with all-wheel drive. Eschewing the third row will free up more legroom for passengers sitting in the back, but the more sloped roofline will result in less headroom compared to the Embla.

It’s going to be approximately the same size as the XC90 replacement and both will ride on the dedicated electric SPA2 architecture enabling a completely flat floor design and short overhangs. The shape has “nothing to do” with the Volvo, according to Polestar boss Thomas Ingenlath. That’s because the Polestar 3 – which will carry a starting price of around €75,000 in Europe – will be more aerodynamic and aggressive while the Embla will play it safe in terms of design.

It will be followed in 2023 by the Polestar 4 as a more affordable SUV serving as a coupe-styled alternative to the existing Polestar 2. As for the Polestar 5, the grand tourer is set for a 2024 launch as a production version of the stunning Percept concept. Meanwhile, the Polestar 1 plug-in hybrid sports coupe will be retired by the end of this year.

Remember last year’s Precept concept? Polestar announced plans about developing a production version just a few months later, and now we’re being given a first official look at the road-going car. Not only that, but Volvo’s electric sub-brand is also announcing the final name of its sleek electric grand tourer – Polestar 5.

However, it’s going to be a long wait because the Tesla Model S-fighting EV won’t be out before 2024. In the meantime, Polestar is putting the finishing touches on the Polestar 3 scheduled to hit the market next year to take on the Model X. It’ll share the underpinnings with the next-generation Volvo XC90 but it will distance itself by serving as a sportier alternative. In 2023, a crossover-coupe will follow suit as the Polestar 4.

As with the Precept, the company is tight-lipped about the Polestar 5’s technical specifications. We do notice some of the modifications it will go through from concept to production, including the adoption of B-pillars and conventional rear doors to replace the showcar’s spectacular suicide doors.

In addition, the LIDAR setup has been removed from the roof while the giant panoramic sunroof has remained, albeit it doesn’t look exactly the same. Interestingly, it appears the Polestar 5 doesn’t have a rear windscreen, but with today’s high-definition cameras, visibility through the back should not be a major concern for future owners. Speaking of cameras, the concept’s side ones have been deleted to make room for old-school mirrors.

Looking through the front passenger door’s window, we can see the vertically oriented touchscreen of the infotainment system, which will be running on Android Automotive. Squint your eyes and you’ll also observe the driver’s instrument cluster. On the Precept concept, the main center screen had a 15-inch diagonal while the other one measured 12.5 inches.

We’re expecting the 2024 Polestar 5 to be a potent dual-motor, all-wheel-drive machine since logic tells us the car will be aimed squarely at the Tesla Model S Plaid, Porsche Taycan Turbo S, and the Audi RS E-Tron GT. In addition, it’ll also have to fight the top-spec version of the recently launched Lucid Air and the Mercedes-AMG EQS 53.

Polestar’s announcement about being listed on the Nasdaq at a value of $20 billion isn’t the most exciting news, but the press release does have some juicy images worth talking about. The company founded in 2017 by Volvo and Geely is teasing three new EVs that are all scheduled to come out by 2024. These will help the company to reach its ambitious goal of selling around 290,000 vehicles by the middle of the decade, compared to only 10,000 units delivered in 2020.

While Polestar doesn’t reveal the identities of these three vehicles, it’s not that hard to figure out what we’re looking at. The first to hit the market will be the Polestar 3 SUV arriving in 2022 as a more upscale version of the next-generation Volvo XC90 EV. Come 2023, the Polestar 4 will be launched as a coupe-styled SUV, while the Polestar 5 due in 2024 will be a production version of the Precept concept.

It is believed the Polestar 3 will carry a starting price of approximately €75,000 and command a premium over the equivalent electric Volvo XC90. It’s getting a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive version featuring a more powerful setup than the range-topping XC90 EV. Another major difference between the two will be the absence of a third row for the Polestar, which will be slightly shorter and with a more sloped roofline.

The Polestar 4 will be cheaper in a bid to lure in more buyers and could cost somewhere in the region of €47,000. Chances are the 4 will be Polestar’s version of the Volvo C40 Recharge, meaning it will ride on the same CMA platform. In its highest specification, the C40 has an electric motor at the rear axle and another one at the front, enabling a combined output of 402 horsepower and 487 lb-ft (660 Nm) of torque.

Last but not least, the Polestar 5 will be a sleek five-door liftback being engineered as a long-range grand tourer to take on the likes of the Mercedes EQS, Tesla Model S, Porsche Taycan, and the Audi E-Tron GT. It’s being developed at the company’s R&D center in the UK at the MIRA Technology Park where Polestar will double the workforce from the current staff consisting of 250 employees.

Polestar signaled plans to expand its lineup with the Precept concept back in February 2020 before confirming plans for a production version several months later. It won’t reach the assembly line for the next couple of years, but that hasn’t stopped Volvo’s electric spin-off brand from releasing an interesting image of a prototype.

The photo was published to complement an announcement about Polestar doubling its R&D team in the UK where more than 500 people are going to work at the facility within the MIRA Technology Park. The main target is to develop the Precept from a concept to a prototype, and ultimately, to a production-ready EV. It’s set to hit the assembly line before 2025, although an exact timeframe regarding its release has not been disclosed.

Arriving after the Polestar 3 SUV due in 2022, the Precept appears to be largely carrying the body of last year’s concept. It’s shaping up to be a worthy adversary for the likes of the Tesla Model S, Porsche Taycan / Audi E-Tron GT, and the recently unveiled Mercedes EQS. Details about the low-slung EV have not been provided, but we’re expecting a dual-motor setup with AWD and more power than the 402 hp and 487 pound-feet of torque available in the Polestar 2.

It goes without saying the Precept will be bigger, therefore necessitating a larger battery than the 64- and 78-kWh packs offered by the Polestar 2. It will act as the brand’s flagship car, which should translate into impressive specs and the latest technology to go up against more established rivals in the EV scene.

Some would argue the production version will arrive a bit too late, but it’s worth mentioning that Polestar is still a relatively new brand so it needs time to roll out new vehicles. Speaking of which, the company says it has a “pipeline of cars under development,” meaning there could be more on the way beyond the Polestar 3 and the production-ready Precept.

The Polestar 3 was originally teased back in mid-June, but there hasn’t been any news about the electric SUV since then. Thankfully, Car and Driver was able to obtain some preliminary technical specifications after having a chat with Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath. While the next-generation Volvo XC90 will offer an EV option likely combined with three rows, the Polestar 3 will be available strictly with two rows of seats.

Granted, that’s not all too surprising seeing as how the vehicle hiding under the cover has a sloping roofline that would make it quite difficult to cram in more than four/five seats in the cabin. Ingenlath explained he has nothing against three-row vehicles, but argues offering a seven-seat option would have made some people wonder how the Polestar 3 differs from the mechanically related XC90.

He went on to mention sticking to two rows allows Polestar to offer more room between the front and rear seats to enable a “luxurious feeling” while improving aerodynamics thanks to the swoopy roofline. Consequently, expect copious amounts of rear legroom and a low drag coefficient for an SUV.

While the Polestar 3 and next-gen Volvo XC90 EV will share most of the bits and pieces, aside from being built at the same South Carolina plant in the US, there will be one key difference between the two. Ingenlath told C&D the Polestar 3 will be fitted with a powertrain that will give it “a top power position that is unique to Polestar.”

Much like the zero-emissions XC90, the new Polestar 3 will come with a choice of single- and dual-motor versions, with the latter offering all-wheel drive. Ingenlath argues variety is the spice of life as offering multiple powertrain options will cater to various customer demands all over the world, with some regions preferring AWD while others will go for the single-motor setup.

The official reveal is expected to take place in the coming months, but the Polestar 3 won’t arrive in the United States until at some point next year when it will be advertised as a 2023MY product.

It’s now significantly more affordable to get behind the wheel of the Polestar 2 as Volvo’s electric-focused spin-off has divulged pricing details for the Single Motor version. Math starts at $45,900, which makes it $4,000 cheaper than its dual-motor equivalent. The latter benefits from a massive $10,000 price cut for the 2022 model year and now starts at $49,900.

Those looking to purchase the Polestar 2 at the lowest price possible will want the Single Motor and all the available federal and state EV incentives. For example, the vehicle’s starting price drops to just $34,900 in California after factoring in all applicable discounts for zero-emissions models. Upgrading to the Dual Motor setup will bump the price to $38,900 after incentives.

For your money’s worth, you’ll be getting an EPA-estimated 265 miles of range from the new Polestar 2 Single Motor. The front-wheel-drive EV makes do with 231 horsepower whereas the Dual Motor variant offers 408 hp and the additional benefit of having an AWD layout. The beefier derivative delivers an estimated range of 249 miles, which represents an increase of 16 miles compared to the 2021 model year.

New for 2022MY is a mechanical heat pump as part of the optional $4,000 Plus Pack, which Polestar says boosts range by 10%, but only “under certain conditions.” The kit also encompasses vegan-based upholstery, a Harman Kardon premium sound system, and a full-length panoramic glass roof.
