It was mid-October 2020 when Renault signaled its intentions towards coming out with a compact crossover riding on a dedicated electric platform. The Megane eVision concept was followed last month by a thinly covered pre-production prototype, and now we finally know when the road-going model is set to make its world premiere.

Debuting September 6 at the IAA Munich Motor Show will be the Megane E-Tech, essentially Renault’s version of the Nissan Ariya as both ride on the same CMF-EV architecture. Even though it will be unveiled this fall, the zero-emissions crossover won’t be going on sale until 2022 when it will join the Twingo and Zoe electric city cars.

Renault will have a heavily electrified portfolio at the show in Munich as the Megane E-Tech will be joined by a prototype of the hotly anticipated R5 as well as the company’s current crop of E-Tech hybrid models. In addition, the Mobilize sub-brand will have its own section at the newly designed “Renault studiault” booth.

Additional details about the new EV crossover have not been disclosed, but we do know it will be initially offered with a single electric motor producing 217 hp (160 kW). The Megane E-Tech will incorporate a 60-kWh battery with enough juice for 280 miles (450 kilometers) of range in the WLTP cycle.

Time will tell whether Renault will use the beefier dual-motor, all-wheel-drive setup of the more expensive Ariya versions, which also get a larger 91-kWh battery. The high-end Nissan model offers a meaty 389 hp (290 kW) and 443 lb-ft (600 Nm) for a 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) sprint in as little as 5.1 seconds.

The Megane E-Tech, Renault 5, and the revival of the Renault 4 will help the French brand achieve its ambitious goal to mostly sell electric vehicles by the end of the decade. According to the firm’s updated EV target, 90% of sales will be represented by vehicles without a combustion engine by 2030.

Renault signaled its intentions towards coming out with a bigger electric vehicle in October 2020 when it unveiled the Megane eVision. That concept has now evolved to the pre-production prototype stage as the French marque has built 30 of them to test this summer out on the open road. It’s still fully camouflaged, but this is our best look yet at the electric crossover.

When it goes on sale in 2022, the Megane E-Tech Electric will sit above the Twingo E-Tech Electric and Zoe hatchbacks. It’s expected to be mechanically related to the Nissan Ariya by riding on the same CMF-EV platform developed for fully electric models. For the time being, Renault is only revealing the vehicle has a single motor with 217 horsepower (160 kilowatts) and a 60-kWh battery pack good for 450 kilometers (280 miles) of range in the WLTP cycle.

The new zero-emissions compact model from Renault will be built at the firm’s factory in Douai alongside the Scenic and Escape minivans as well as the midsize Talisman sedan/wagon. The electric crossover’s launch next year won’t spell the end of the traditional Megane as the conventionally powered hatchback, sedan, and wagon will remain on sale.

It will be interesting to see whether the Megane E-Tech Electric will be offered in a beefier dual-motor configuration as seen in the Ariya. Nissan’s C-segment SUV, which has been delayed to winter 2021, is available to preorder in Japan with two motors and a larger 91-kWh battery. It pumps out 389 horsepower (290 kilowatts) and 600 Newton-meters (443 pound-feet) of torque, which helps the Ariya hit 62 mph (100 km/h) in only 5.1 seconds.

The Megane E-Tech Electric will be joined by a series of EVs from the French brand, including the revival of the Renault 5 supermini that has already been previewed by an electric concept. A smaller Renault 4 is also expected as part of the company’s “Renaulution” plan promising seven electric models by the middle of the decade.

It was October 2020 when Renault signaled its intentions towards using one of its most popular nameplates – Megane – for an electric crossover. Fast forward to May 2021, a trio of teaser images depicting the production version of the Megane eVision concept has been published ahead of a market launch scheduled for 2022.

Officially known as the Megane E-Tech Electric, the new arrival will take the shape of a dedicated electric vehicle. Much like the concept before it, this is a compact crossover and will be the first road-going model from the French brand to use the retro-styled logo first seen on the Renault 5 EV supermini concept.

Despite carrying the Megane moniker, it won’t have anything in common with the traditional hatchback, sedan, and wagon that Renault has been selling since the latter half of the 1990s, with a convertible offered for several years. It will be a direct rival for the Volkswagen ID.4 and will sit on the same CMF-EV platform that has already underpinned the Nissan Ariya.

The three teaser images give us the opportunity to see the electric crossover’s full-width LED light bar at the back where it’s bisected by the new-old Renault diamond badge. Hopping inside the cabin, the Megane E-Tech Electric boasts an entirely digital instrument cluster accompanied by a larger portrait-oriented touchscreen for the infotainment system.

A closer look at the driver’s display reveals the vehicle’s rear end design in full and we’ll remind you Renault boss said the production model would look 95% like the Megane eVision concept. Regarding the name, we’re not surprised “E-Tech” is being used since this is the term applied to all of the company’s electrified models, be them hybrids or EVs.

Technical specifications of the production model remain shrouded in mystery for now, but we should point out the concept had a 60-kWh battery pack and a front-mounted electric motor good for 215 horsepower (160 kilowatts) and 221 pound-feet (300 Newton-meters). When the Megane eVision concept debuted last year, Renault said the sprint to 62 mph (100 km/h) would take less than eight seconds.

The maximum range wasn’t mentioned during the concept’s premiere, but Renault did confirm the battery pack would have enough juice for a drive from London to Newcastle, so roughly 290 miles (467 kilometers). Fast-charging capabilities at up to 130 kW have already been announced, along with the concept’s weight of 1,650 kilograms (3,637 pounds). If you’re wondering about size, the Megane eVision was 4,210 mm (165.7 inches) long, 1,800 mm (71 inches) wide, and 1,505 mm (59 inches) tall, with a wheelbase measuring 2,700 mm (106 inches) and 20-inch wheels.

The production-ready Megane E-Tech Electric will go on sale in Europe sometime next year after a potential reveal later this summer.
