Despite being a bit behind the times, in terms of range and efficiency, the Audi e-tron S Sportback is actually quite a power electric SUV. It packs three electric motors — two small ones at the back and one big one up front — that combine to make 496 horsepower and 718 lb-ft of torque. Rather spicy for an EV SUV. However, it’s not the only fast EV SUV in the game and, in this new video from Carwow, we get to see if it can hang with some of the competition.

This new video from Carwow pits three German electric SUVs against each other in the publication’s typical series of tests. But before we get into what happened in the drag races, let’s first talk about the cars themselves, the BMW iX, Mercedes-Benz EQC, and the Tesla Model X.

Image provided by Tesla Inc.

Let’s start with the latter, as it’s the older of the three. The Model X uses two electric motors to make 541 horsepower and 557 lb-ft of torque, which gives it more power but less torque than the Audi. While the BMW makes 523 horsepower and 564 lb-ft. Lastly, the Mercedes-Benz makes 408 hp and 561 lb-ft.

Every car in the test has a monster curb weight, too. The Mercedes-Benz EQC 400 is the lightest of the bunch, weighing in at a whopping 5,335 lbs. That’s followed by the Tesla Model X, at 5,423 lbs, then the BMW at 5,533 lbs, and lastly, the heaviest of them all, the Audi e-tron S Sportback, at 5,776 lbs. So which one is faster in a drag race?

During the first standing drag race, the Audi e-tron S Sportback actually jumped ahead of the pack, despite having the among the worst power-to-weight ratios in the test. That third electric motor must help a ton with traction, allowing Audi to deliver more power at launch. Though, things got a bit trickier as the tests went on. So if you want to see the fastest EV SUV for this money, check out the video below.

There are now fewer options to configure the Model X Plaid in the United States where Tesla has eliminated the five- and seven-seat interior configurations. In other words, those eager to purchase the high-performance electric SUV are stuck for the time being with the six-seat layout. It’s going to set you back $126,490 before options, which include the 22-inch Turbine wheels for $5,500 along with either a cream or black and white cabin that will cost you an additional $2,000.

The six-seat Model X Plaid is listed on Tesla’s website for the US with Solid Black, Deep Blue Metallic, and Midnight Silver Metallic paint jobs available for an extra $1,500 while the striking Red Multi-Coat is $2,500. As for the much-debated Full Self-Driving Capability, that will add $10,000 to the final bill. Once the configuration is finished, you’ll be disappointed to find out the vehicle won’t be delivered until October 2022.

Even though Tesla introduced the Model X Refresh with the 1,020-horsepower Plaid version in early 2021, customer deliveries did not commence until late last month. Seeing as how the delivery time is so long, the backlog must be quite large, with the company needing about 10 months to fulfill all existing orders.

As a reminder, the Model X Plaid is touted as the quickest-accelerating production SUV on the market by hitting 60 mph from a standstill in just two and a half seconds and doing the quarter-mile in 9.9 seconds. The tri-motor vehicle equipped with torque vectoring rides as standard on 20-inch wheels and has a 333-mile range. Go for the larger set we mentioned earlier, and you won’t be able to cover more than 311 miles.

Should you want the Model X with five or seven seats, you’ll have to settle for the regular trim level. The standard five-seat configuration costs $104,990 and offers 351 miles of range, but won’t be delivered until May 2023. If you can’t want that much, the seven-seat layout costs an extra $3,500 and has a January 2023 estimated delivery. Because it’s slightly heavier due to the extra seats, the Model X with seven seats comes with a slightly lower range of 347 miles.

It’s not known why the Plaid is six-seat-only now, but the limited availability might stem from supplier constraints since the five- and seven-seat models have three seats in the middle row. Perhaps Tesla is having a hard time sourcing the necessary components for the two-seat middle row.

Tesla introduced the Model X Refresh in late January but it wasn’t until mid-October when customer deliveries started. We’re strictly talking about the standard model as the Palo Alto electric car manufacturer is only now beginning to ship the hotter Plaid to buyers. As some would say, better late than never, but it will likely take several months until production will be fully ramped up.

The updated Model X has managed to beat the Mercedes EQS SUV to the punch since the German luxury electric SUV won’t arrive until later next year. However, if you order the Plaid today, you’ll have to patiently wait for nearly a year since the website shows an estimated delivery timeframe of October 2022. It will set you back an eye-watering $113,940, and that’s before options. In the meantime, the BMW iX M60 with over 600 horsepower is debuting next week at CES in Las Vegas.

Billed as being the “quickest-accelerating SUV in production today,” the 2022 Tesla Model X Plaid hits 60 mph from a standstill in just two and a half seconds. It will do the quarter-mile in a mind-boggling 9.9 seconds thanks to three electric motors providing a combined output of 1,020 horsepower. With the standard 20-inch wheels, it’s going to cover 335 miles, while upgrading to the larger 22-inch set available for an extra $5,500 will drop the range to 313 miles.

Tesla is selling the Model X Plaid with a choice of five, six, or seven seats, along with the possibility to pick from an all-black, along with optional $2,000 black and white or cream interiors. Those who do a lot of highway driving should find the Full Self-Driving Capability useful, although it does cost a whopping $10,000.

Attached above, an in-depth video shared by one of the early adopters shows what the range-topping Model X version has to offer, now with more tech and performance than ever before. It’s still as practical and spacious as ever, thus making it the ideal all-in-one vehicle.

When Tesla refreshed the Model S and Model X at the beginning of the year, the electric sedan and SUV received a new piece of hardware. We are specifically talking about noise-canceling microphones built into the front seats, which are not currently available in the lesser Model 3 and Model Y. The newly added kit has been pretty much useless, until now.

Tesla introduced software update 2021.44.5 this week, which effectively turns on a newly added Active Road Noise Reduction function. According to the Palo Alto EV manufacturer, it “reduces road noise by creating quiet zones near headrests.” The company is giving owners the choice to have the feature turned on or off, so you’re not going to be stuck with it should you prefer to hear road imperfections.

Early impressions provided by people who have tested the new feature say Active Road Noise Reduction works on a rather subtle level. It does make a difference, but the noise-canceling microphones do not bring a major improvement in terms of making the cabin quieter. However, that could change with time as Tesla might perfect the software and upgrade the function to have a more noticeable impact.

Here is the full description provided by Tesla in the release note: “Your vehicle now has the ability to actively reduce low-frequency road noise while driving on rough surfaces. To accomplish this, the system uses the seat microphones to measure the noise in the cabin, then generates anti-noise through the speakers to create quiet zones around the occupants. To access, tap Audio Settings > Options > Activate Road Noise Reduction.”

It should be mentioned noise-canceling technology inside a luxury car is not a new feature as it has been around for many years. As a matter of fact, it’s not just premium brands that offer this setup as even mainstream models such as the Honda Accord and Nissan Maxima feature active noise cancellation. It makes sense Tesla is also adopting this system for its two high-end models, and we won’t be too surprised if it will eventually trickle down to its more affordable products.

Seeing as how the Cybertruck coming late next year will have massive and chunky tires, the all-electric pickup could certainly use this feature.

Having a large number of orders can be both a blessing and a curse for an automaker. It’s a blessing when you can quickly clear out the backlog by having the necessary production capacity. It is a curse in Tesla’s case because it simply can’t keep up with the strong demand the Model S and Model X are enjoying.

According to Electrek, Tesla is currently sending out e-mails to customers from outside of North America, informing them it’s no longer possible to order either of the two models. The reason being is the EV manufacturer is prioritizing the United States to clear out the current backlog of orders before once again restarting sales in other parts of the world.

It does not come as a big surprise the Model S and Model X are hot commodities seeing as how the cars were not available for several months. It’s especially true for the SUV of which deliveries of the refreshed variant only started a couple of months ago. While the two cars were on a hiatus following their reveal in early 2021, Tesla kept taking orders, even though the Model S did not enter production until June.

There is a silver lining in all of this, provided you are willing to wait. European customers as well as buyers from other regions across the world will be able to order the Model S and Model X once again in the latter half of 2022. It will have been a year and a half without the two premium electric vehicles on the Old Continent as the two were retired when the refreshed models were unveiled at the end of January.

In the meantime, Tesla’s website for the United States shows the Model S base model with estimated delivery in July 2022 whereas the high-performance Plaid can be in your garage as early as this month. As for the Model X, the standard trim level won’t be delivered until January 2023 (yes, you’ve read that correctly) compared the Plaid’s estimated delivery in October 2022.

Tesla introduced the Model X Refresh at the beginning of the year but news about the all-electric SUV have been few and far between. Customer deliveries started only a few weeks ago after months of delays, and it’s only the Long Range version that’s being shipped out as those who have ordered the Plaid have to wait some more.

Documents submitted by Tesla to the EPA have revealed some juicy tidbits about the revised Model X, and according to EV enthusiast temperament on Twitter, significant changes have been made for the updated SUV. The Long Range has lost four percent of weight over its predecessor, partially thanks to a 14% drop in battery weight.

The fact Tesla has been able to shave off weight from the battery is impressive considering the pack now holds 13% more energy than before. After slimming down, the Model X Refresh Long Range tips the scales at 5,219 pounds (2,367 kilograms) whereas the previous 2020MY weighed 5,437 lbs (2,466 kg). The battery pack now weighs 1,183 lbs (537 kg) as opposed to 1,377 lbs (625 kg) installed in the pre-refresh Model X Long Range.

The good news continues as the latest variant of the zero-emissions SUV is approximately 30% more powerful than the model it replaces. It features a front-mounted electric motor rated at 243 kW and a rear e-motor producing 248 kW, up from the 180-kW front and 189-kW rear electric motors of the 2020 Model X.

Bear in mind the documents sent by Tesla to the EPA are only for the Long Range, but we’re expecting great things for the high-performance Plaid as well. Early adopters of the updated Model S and Model X are saying the sound insulation is better than before, which makes it even more remarkable the SUV has lost weight since it likely carries more sound-deadening material than before.

Tesla took its sweet time coming out with the Model X Refresh following the SUV’s debut at the beginning of the year, with customer deliveries only starting a couple of weeks ago. The updated version is finally here now, and YouTuber OCDetailing had the opportunity to take a thorough look and discover what the Palo Alto brand has changed for 2021.

The version featured here has a six-seat configuration with its heated and cooled perforated seats, plus all the improvements we already saw on the Model S Refresh. Of course, the Model X is substantially more spacious on the inside as even adults can comfortably sit on the third-row seats. Needless to say, the main attraction in the cabin is now the new infotainment featuring a landscape orientation as most cars today now have, with a few exceptions.

The much-debated yoke steering wheel of the Model S has found its way inside the Model X as well and it looks just as futuristic as it did on the sedan. It’s still very much a love/hate affair as some have praised Tesla for being this bold while others have criticized the company for replacing the conventional wheel with something that makes maneuvering in tight spaces a lot more difficult.

It’s worth mentioning OCDetailing says at one point in the video, around the 7:28 mark, that the Model X Refresh has a horizontal strip to the right of the infotainment that could be a screen Tesla has yet to activate. However, that’s not the case as it’s nothing more than a trim piece finished in glossy black that extends all the way on the front passenger side of the dashboard. It’s also on the left side of the steering wheel to make the dash look a bit more premium.

There’s not much to say about the exterior since the visual tweaks have been kept down to a minimum in typical Tesla fashion. You’d have to be a diehard fan to notice that the wheels now have a different design and that the chrome accents have been removed. The designers also discreetly updated the look of the front bumper and modified the rear bumper skirt to accommodate a center-mounted trapezoidal shape.

It would appear Tesla has another winner on its hands with the Model X Refresh, an electric SUV ready to compete with upcoming rivals that have been announced, chief of which being the Mercedes EQS SUV coming in 2022.

It was only yesterday when we reported about the Model 3 and Model Y receiving a second price increase in October and now Tesla is making the larger Model S and Model X more expensive as well. The price hike is rather massive as both high-end EVs now cost $5,000 more than before. The price bump applies to the Long Range versions, which now start at $94,990 for the sedan and $104,990 for the SUV.

If there is a silver lining in all of this, it’s that pricing for the high-performance Plaid version has remained the same. In other words, the Tesla Model S Plaid continues to kick off from $129,990 whereas the Model X Plaid is going to set you back $119,990. As a side note, we find it a bit unusual for the Model X to be the more affordable offering considering SUVs are typically more expensive than their sedan counterparts, regardless if we’re talking about electric or combustion-engined vehicles.

The Model X’s price increase comes as a surprise seeing as how Tesla only started customer deliveries of the updated model a few days ago. Ordering the Long Range today means you’ll have to patiently wait until September 2022 to take delivery, but you can get the electric SUV sooner provided you step up to the Plaid as the sporty one is listed with an estimated delivery time of July.

As far as the Model S is concerned, Tesla’s website shows the Long Range with June as being the estimated delivery time. Upgrading to the Plaid version of the all-electric sedan will get you behind the wheel of the speedy EV as early as this December.

As always, those who are not willing to wait so long can pick one of the pre-built vehicles from the existing inventory. The delivery times for newly configured vehicles could drop in the following months taking into account Tesla has yet to fully ramp up production of the Model S and Model X. It remains to be seen whether the backlog will indeed decrease as the Palo Alto company has the tendency to be rather unpredictable.

Better late than never, Tesla has officially kicked off deliveries of the Model X Refresh after multiple delays. The updated electric SUV was unveiled back in January, but it’s only now the first batch of vehicles have been delivered to their rightful owners. To mark the important milestone, the Palo Alto manufacturer has released a video on Vimeo (attached below) that gives us a closer look at the revised zero-emissions SUV.

If you haven’t put your name on the waiting list, we’re afraid you’re in for a long wait as Tesla’s website shows an estimated July 2022 delivery for the high-performance Plaid, which kicks off at $119,990. The wait is even longer if you want the standard Long Range, available from $99,990 with an estimated delivery date of September 2022.

Meanwhile, reports say the first five 2022 Model X Refresh units have been handed over during a small event organized this weekend in Fremont, California. Tesla has already set a new production record for 2021 even though it’s only mid-October, and what’s even more impressive is that the numbers don’t obviously include any Model Xs since shipments to customers are only now starting. With more and more electric SUVs delivered, the remaining two and a half months until the end of the year should translate into even higher numbers that will be virtually impossible to beat by other EV manufacturers.

As a refresher, the 2022 Model X gets just about the same array of tweaks as the Model S Refresh, with the obvious differences being the SUV keeps its spectacular Falcon Wing rear doors and the massive windshield. Tesla is selling the vehicle with the option to pick an interior layout with five, six, or seven seats, while wheel choices are limited to 20- and 22-inch sets.

The standard dual-motor Long Range can cover up to 360 miles between charges and will do 0 to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds before topping out at 155 mph. Upgrade to the tri-motor Plaid and performance increases substantially, with the sprint taking just 2.5 seconds while top speed goes up to 163 mph. On the flip side, the Plaid has a slightly lower range of 340 miles. Both flavors of the Model X Refresh come as standard with all-wheel drive.

When Tesla introduced the 2022 Model X Refresh at the end of January, the company’s website was showing an estimated delivery date in April. However, it’s the middle of May and customers have yet to receive their electric SUVs. It gets worse as a new report indicates those who have signed on the dotted line to buy the vehicle are going to have to arm themselves with a lot of patience.

Teslarati reports existing orders have a new delivery date – October – and it also applies to the 2022 Model S Refresh. Bear in mind this is applicable to some customers who ordered the cars on February 20, so it goes without saying orders registered after that date could take even longer to be delivered. A quick look on Tesla’s site reveals that placing an order today means having to wait until January or February 2022 to have it delivered.

With Tesla being tight-lipped regarding the delays, it’s unclear why the company is taking so long to fulfill what must be quite a substantial backlog of orders for the updated Model S and Model X. Some would argue the issue stems from the huge demand for the cheaper Model 3 and Model Y as Tesla might prioritize those models.

However, that might not be the case. Even though the Model S and Model X generate considerably lower sales, these models have significantly higher profit margins. Some people speculate Tesla is not quite done butting the finishing touches on the revised models and needs more time to make the last-minute adjustments before sending cars to customers. Another plausible explanation is an issue related to the supply chain.

These delays couldn’t have come at a worse time as Mercedes just launched the EQS as its flagship electric sedan and will be unveiling the smaller EQE in September.
