If you’ve been patiently waiting for Volkswagen to improve the ID.4 in the United States, we have some great news to share. The transition to the 2022 model year brings a significant boost in range for the rear-wheel-drive Pro model. The electric crossover can now cover an EPA-estimated 280 miles, which is up by 20 miles compared to the previous model year.

There’s also the ID.4 Pro S, which is still RWD but returns a slightly lower 268 miles of range since it’s a bit heavier due to the additional standard equipment. Those in need of all-wheel drive should know the AWD Pro will cover 251 miles between charges while the AWD Pro S is the least efficient of all, with an EPA-estimated 245 miles of range.

Regardless of choice, all 2022 VW ID.4 models in the US share the lithium-ion battery pack with a gross capacity of 82 kWh. The new model year brings an improvement as far as charging is concerned since owners will be able to “fill up” the battery at 135 kW. That’s 10 kW more than the 2021MY. Bundled with every purchase are three years of free and unlimited 30-minute charging sessions at Electrify America DC.

There are currently approximately 3,500 chargers in Electrify America’s network, with the number to grow to 10,000 in the US and Canada by 2026. VW recently announced an OTA update for all ID models equipped with the bigger battery that will unlock bidirectional charging later this year. It won’t have a vehicle-to-vehicle functionality since the battery’s juice will only power household appliances or tools rather than another EV.

In regards to pricing, the base RWD Pro kicks off at $40,760, followed by the AWD Pro at $44,440, the RWD Pro S at $45,260, and the AWD Pro S at $48,940. All prices exclude the $1,195 destination fees and the federal tax credit of up to $7,500.

Following news about the rear-wheel-drive ID.4 Pro receiving a 260-mile rating and the Pro S a 250-mile rating from the Environmental Protection Agency, Volkswagen is happy to report the EPA has published the range figures for the equivalent all-wheel-drive models. The Pro AWD will go 249 miles on a single charge whereas the Pro S is going to have enough juice for 240 miles.

It’s a marginal range loss we certainly wouldn’t mind considering the benefits of having the all-wheel-drive version, especially in some parts of the United States where winters tend to be rough. These AWD-equipped models share an 82-kWh battery pack and a combined output of 295 hp and 339 lb-ft of torque courtesy of a dual-motor setup.

Getting behind the wheel of Volkswagen’s electric SUV with AWD is going to set you back $43,675 for the Pro version before any applicable EV discounts, such as the federal tax credit of up to $7,500. The better-equipped Pro S retails for $48,175, and both support fast-charging at 125 kW, in which case the battery can be replenished from 5% to 80% in approximately 38 minutes.

It’s worth noting the ID.4 fitted with all-wheel drive is quite similar to the ID.4 GTX (pictured above) available in Europe where it’s advertised as a performance version. Stepping up to the Pro S brings a lot of extra goodies, including adaptive LED headlights, a panoramic glass fixed roof, and even an illuminated grille. To sweeten the deal, VW USA throws in an electric tailgate, 12-inch infotainment, and leatherette-wrapped front seats, which are 12-way electrically adjustable.

As a final note, VW is selling all flavors of the ID.4 bundled with three years of unlimited charging at the Electrify America DC Fast Chargers network, which currently has more than 650 charging stations and more than 2,700 DC fast chargers.

The ID.3 electric hatchback arrived on the market after several months of delays caused by problematic software. Volkswagen claims the initial hiccups have long been solved and the German automaker is now ready to roll out the very first over-the-air update for the zero-emissions compact hatch.

It’s called the ID.Software2.3 and is coming out this month for the ID.3, with the ID.4 and the high-performance ID.4 GTX to get the same array of software tweaks in the near future. With this update, VW claims it’s the first high-volume car manufacturer to implement an OTA update. Going forward, the German company promises to push live an over-the-air update once every twelve weeks.

Implemented through a mobile data transfer, ID.Software2.3 brings improvements to the car’s headlight functions as well as the infotainment system. In addition, VW claims the OTA update upgrades the performance and stability of the MEB-based electric vehicles, which can have up to 35 control units revised through an over-the-air update.

On the occasion of VW’s first OTA, company CEO Ralf Brandstätter commented: “We are creating a completely new, digital customer experience with new functions and greater comfort every twelve weeks.” It remains to be seen whether the ID.6 three-row SUV available only in China will be getting the same array of updates seeing as how it’s similar to the smaller dedicated EVs from VW.

As previously reported, it’s worth mentioning all ID.3 and ID.4 vehicles built prior to the calendar week 8 in 2021 have to visit a VW dealership to get new software that unlocks the possibility to support OTA updates. Volkswagen has been extensively testing in-house the implementation of OTA software revisions on more than 3,000 company cars to iron out all the kinks before pushing these updates live to customer cars.

Additional dedicated electric vehicles on the MEB architecture are on their way, and it goes without saying these will also support OTA updates. These will include next year’s hotly-anticipated ID Buzz van, a wagon due in 2023, followed by an entry-level EV in 2025, and the Trinity sedan in 2026.

What Europeans know as the Volkswagen ID.4 GTX is the ID.4 AWD Pro in the United States where it serves as the most affordable electric vehicle on sale with all-wheel drive. It kicks off at $43,675 (plus $1,195 destination charges) before incentives (of up to $7,500) and brings a dual-motor setup along with an 82-kWh battery pack with enough juice for 249 miles of range per an estimation made by EPA.

Step up to the ID.4 AWD Pro S and you’ll be paying $48,175 to get an extended list of standard equipment, including a panoramic glass fixed roof, an illuminated grille, and adaptive LED headlights. Inside the, fancier trim level comes with a 12-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system as well as a powered hands-free tailgate and 12-way power-adjustable front seats covered in leatherette. For an extra $1,500 it can be equipped with a Gradient package adding 20-inch wheels and a black roof with silver rails. Because it has more goodies and therefore is heavier, the S version is rated by EPA at a slightly lower 240 miles between charges.

This all-wheel-drive version of the ID.4 is quite similar to Europe’s recently unveiled GTX version (pictured above). It benefits from a combined output of 295 horsepower and covers the sprint to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds for the AWD Pro model. It primarily works in rear-wheel-drive mode as the electric motor at the front only kicks in when it’s needed. It is automatically activated within a few hundredths of a second whenever the onboard sensors detect wheelspin at any corner.

Drivers can activate a dedicated Traction mode which forces AWD and works at speeds of up to 12 mph for driving on slippery or loose surfaces. Other driving modes include Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Custom, with the latter allowing the user to blend characteristics of the Comfort and Sport modes. While the rear-wheel-drive ID.4 with its single motor can tow up to 2,200 pounds, the dual-motor version has a towing capacity of 2,700 pounds provided you’re using a braked trailer.

Volkswagen will have the all-paw ID.4 at dealers in the United States during the fourth quarter of 2021, but you can already preorder one today.
