General Motors is fast-tracking its transition to electric vehicles by launching a variety of EVs across several segments of the market. The newly developed Ultium platform serves as the backbone for the zero-emissions onslaught, and early signs are showing it’s a success. Even though the 2024 Silverado EV debuted less than a month ago, it has already racked up more than 110,000 reservations.

Meanwhile, the much more expensive GMC Hummer pickup truck together with its SUV equivalent have generated combined interest in excess of 59,000 reservations. At the same time, BrightDrop vans are also in high demand as more than 25,000 reservations have been made so far. No numbers have been provided for the Cadillac Lyriq of which customer deliveries are scheduled to begin in the coming months.

Bear in mind Chevrolet has already announced the Equinox EV and Blazer EV will go on sale during the 2024 model year, so GM has a lot on its plate when it comes to diversifying its electric offerings. To make it happen, the North American conglomerate has already invested more than $14 billion in 10 states across the country since 2020 and will spend a further $7 billion to boost battery cell and EV assembly capacity.

GM head honcho Mary Barra said one of the short-term objectives is to sell 400,000 purely electric vehicles in North America through 2023. However, the future looks grim for the Bolt EV and Bolt EUV as the factory in Orion Township, Michigan where the two are made will be repurposed for other products. It’s necessary to reach an overall target for 2026 of producing 600,000 electric trucks by the end of 2025.

Getting back to the Silverado EV, GM says more than 240 fleet operations have made reservations for the fullsize electric pickup. In addition, BrightDrop has lured in some big names, including Walmart and FedEx Express, which will be using their cargo vans. While no reservations numbers have been made public for the Lyriq, GM is happy to report it won’t organize a new round of reservations because the backlog is already pretty big. Instead, Cadillac will begin to take customer orders after the Debut Edition hits the market in March.

Chevrolet introduced the Silverado EV at the CES 2022 event in Las Vegas yesterday when it also opened a dedicated page on its website for early adopters to reserve one. Preliminary signs are showing the electric pickup truck will be a commercial success since all RST First Edition examples were spoken for in just 12 minutes. General Motors CEO Mary Barra made the interesting disclosure in an interview for Bloomberg Technology.

It’s a bit of a surprise people rushed in to get one seeing as how it costs a whopping $105,000 before destination charges and any applicable EV incentives. The thing is, Chevy did not specify how many of these First Editions will be built, so the fact it’s sold out doesn’t necessarily mean there’s great demand for it. We will have to wait and see how many will be built to cast our final judgment regarding the First Edition’s popularity.

In addition, we should point out making a reservation is not the same thing as placing an order. To put your name on the list, all you must do is make a $100 deposit, which Chevy says is fully refundable. Time will tell how many of these reservations will be converted to firm orders once the company with the bowtie emblem will begin the process.

Even though the RST First Edition is “sold out,” you can still reserve one on the company’s website. Chevy is fully aware some people will bail out and ask for a refund, thus allowing other customers to get in line for the electric fullsize truck. The Silverado EV will initially hit the market from spring 2023 in the fleet-oriented WT trim priced from an estimated $39,900 before the much more expensive limited-run model will arrive later that fall. As previously reported, an offroad-focus Trail Boss is also planned.

Should you want a non-First Edition RST, Chevy’s website shows it won’t be available until summer 2024…

After previewing the 2024 Equinox EV and announcing the 2024 Blazer EV, Chevrolet has another surprise in store for us from CES 2022 in Las Vegas. Out of nowhere, the company with the bowtie emblem revealed a sole image depicting the 2024 Silverado EV in the off-road-ready Trail Boss trim level. This will join the previously revealed $105,000 RST First Edition with its potent 664-horsepower setup and the fleet-oriented $39,900 WT.

You can tell it’s the rugged version by the more generous ground clearance in the same vein as the Colorado Trail Boss and Silverado 1500 Trail Boss trucks. Meaty all-terrain tires are also on the menu for the adventurous Silverado EV, and so is additional black plastic body cladding. We can easily observe the pair of tow hooks finished in red, and we’d wager the wheels are smaller than the 24-inch set announced for the RST.

It goes without saying Chevy will fit the Trail Boss with dual electric motors as standard to give the outdoorsy truck an all-wheel-drive setup. Some goodies from the GMC Hummer EV could trickle down to the Silverado EV Trail Boss as we’re expecting locking differentials and perhaps even the Crab Walk mode.

While the regular version will cover up to 400 miles on a single charge, there is a pretty good chance the Trail Boss won’t be able to match that because of its chunkier tires. The RST First Edition and WT will be the first to go on sale in 2023, but the third trim level with its lifted suspension and other mods should not be too far behind.

All things considered, the battle in the electric pickup truck segment is certainly heating up. It seems more and more automakers are expanding their EV offerings to match their ICE lineups. However, Chevy seems a bit too eager to announce new zero-emissions products since these won’t be going on sale until later in 2023.

It won’t hit the market until spring 2023, but here it is, the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV. The fully electric pickup truck was subjected to a lengthy teaser campaign last year and now it’s finally breaking cover in Las Vegas at CES 2022. Mechanically related to the GMC Hummer EV, the zero-emission workhorse will be offered only in the Crew Cab body style with a short front overhang thanks to the dedicated electric platform.

Much like the Hummer and the Cadillac Lyriq, the Silverado EV rides on General Motors’ Ultium platform and boasts a 5-foot-11-inch bed, plus a Multi-Flex Midgate for added practicality. The latter offers a little over nine feet of extra storage between the cab and the tailgate when the Midgate is open. In addition, the rear seats have a 40:60 split-folding configuration, and Chevy will also offer a tonneau cover to hide your valuables.

The flagship version will go by the name of RST First Edition and will have all the bells and whistles, including all-wheel steering, a powered tailgate, the aforementioned Midgate, and automatically adaptive air suspension. Oh, and gargantuan 24-inch wheels. You’ll also be getting a 17-inch for the infotainment system joined by an 11-inch driver’s display and a 14-inch head-up display.  The range topper will come along with Super Cruise, GM’s hands-free driver assistance system with support for more than 200,000 miles of roads across the United States and Canada.

The RST First Edition will be one of the two trims available initially, along with the fleet-oriented WT. While the budget-friendly version will make do with 510 horsepower and 615 pound-feet of torque, the more expensive trim will up the power ante to a whopping 664 hp and more than 780 lb-ft courtesy of a so-called Wide Open Watts Mode. The RST-spec model with its punchier setup will do 0 to 60 mph in less than four and a half seconds.

Being first and foremost a truck, you are probably interested in the towing capacity. The WT will be able to tow 8,000 pounds (10,000 for RST) and offer a maximum payload of 1,200 pounds (1,300 for RST). A max tow package for the fleet model will follow and it’s going to deliver an impressive 20,000 pounds max trailering. Both the WT and RST will get a Tow/Haul mode, integrated trailer brake controller, hitch guidance, and trailer hitch provisions. The more expensive variant also is going to pack an Advanced Trailering System.

The size of the battery pack has not been disclosed, but Chevy says the 2024 Silverado EV will offer more than 400 miles on a single charge, according to internal estimations for both trim levels. Once you’re out of juice, it will take only 10 minutes to add 100 miles of range, provided you’ll be charging the truck at its maximum power of 350 kW.

It should be mentioned the pickup will come with bidirectional charging, meaning it will send power from the battery to various tools and even light up your home in case the neighborhood goes dark. In addition, the truck will have as many as 10 outlets with a total power of 10.2 kW and will be able to charge other EVs with the right accessory charge cord.

Let’s talk pricing. The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV RST First Edition will cost $105,000 plus destination charges. The WT is going to set you back $39,900, with RST, Trail Boss, and other trim levels to follow in due course with prices varying from $50,000 to $80,000. The company with the bowtie emblem is already accepting reservations at Chevrolet.com.

Along with the purely electric GMC Sierra, the Chevy Silverado E is set to enter production in early 2023 at the overhauled Factory Zero assembly plant located in Michigan. Speaking with CNBC about the latter of the two zero-emissions pickup trucks, General Motors CEO Mary Barra described it as being “unmatched” in its segment. Earlier this year, she said it’s going to be a “stunning” truck.

It’s an interesting comment seeing as how the vehicle will be quite late to the party, arriving after the Ford F-150 Lightning, Rivian R1T, and quite possibly after the Tesla Cybertruck as well. Ahead of its of its official reveal in January 2022 at CES in Las Vegas, we are being told the Silverado E will “educate people on what you can do with an electric truck when you have an electric truck platform.”

Reading between the lines, Barra’s comment was a subtle dig at Ford since its F-150 Lightning is not riding on a bespoke EV architecture, but rather on an electric adaptation of the combustion-engined fullsize truck. In other words, GM claims the Silverado E won’t have the packaging constraints usually associated with vehicles that switch to electric power while using the bones of an ICE truck.

The statement was made by GM’s top brass while speaking at the Automotive Press Association meeting in Detroit, claiming the Silverado without a combustion engine will make a “big difference” in the truck segment. It should be a similar story with the GMC Sierra sister model, with the two to be built alongside the GMC Hummer EV pickup and SUV.

While the Hummer is aimed squarely at high-end buyers looking for a posh lifestyle vehicle, the Silverado E and Sierra E will primarily be electric workhorses with a much lower price tag to compete with the electric F-150. As previously mentioned, the Lightning is a huge hit as Ford has racked up 200,000 reservations, which will be enough to keep the Blue Oval busy for a couple of years provided most of these reservations will be converted into firm orders.

Even though General Motors will unveil the Chevrolet Silverado EV on January 5, 2022, in Las Vegas at CES, production of the all-electric pickup truck won’t start until the beginning of 2023. The disclosure was made by a top GM executive, with Doug Parks revealing the timing during the recent Deutsche Bank’s AutoTech Conference.

In the meantime, Ford is taking all the measures to kick off the assembly of the F-150 Lightning for which it has registered no fewer than 200,000 reservations, not including fleet orders. In addition, the zero-emissions Silverado will have to fight the Rivian R1T and the much-hyped Tesla Cybertruck. Chevy’s pickup will benefit from GM’s Ultium batteries and is expected to offer more than 400 miles (644 kilometers) of range.

Much like the GMC Hummer EV and its innovative Crab Walk mode, the Silverado without a combustion engine is going to benefit from rear-wheel steering to lower the turning radius and make the large truck more maneuverable compared to its gas-fueled counterpart. Speaking of which, the EV version might not necessarily be a direct equivalent of the ICE-powered vehicle, according to a statement made earlier this year by GM North America President Steve Carlisle in an interview with Automotive News.

Since we mentioned the Hummer, it’s worth pointing out both the pickup and the SUV are going to be assembled at GM’s Factory Zero in Detroit where the Silverado EV will be manufactured as well. Regarding power, logic tells us it won’t match the four-digit output of the top-tier Hummer, but even the base model should have roughly 500 hp on tap.

All-wheel drive will be standard across the range while the battery pack could be as big as 200 kWh. It’s been previously described by GM CEO Mary Barra as being “just stunning,” with the concept version heading to CES on 24-inch wheels while featuring a large moonroof. Pricing details have not been announced, although some believe the entry-level trim will set you back anywhere between $40,000 to $50,000.
