Genesis dropped a bombshell ahead of the 2022 LA Auto Show. Somehow, Genesis was able to keep its newest concept car secret up until recently, when it revealed the prettiest convertible concept I’ve seen in ages—the Genesis X Convertible Concept. The Genesis X Convertible Concept is an electric convertible grand touring car concept and it’s breathtakingly beautiful.

There are also some clever design elements throughout. For instance, Genesis found a clever way to work its brand’s front-end design language in without the use of a grille, by simply recreating the grille’s silhouette in headlight bars. It looks great, keeps Genesis’ brand recognition, and eliminates the obnoxious fake grilles of almost every other EV.

Out back, the double taillights and subtle ducktail spoiler give off Aston Martin DB9 Volante vibes and it’s lovely. Also lovely is the way the shoulder line stats at the hood and makes its way all the way back to above the rear fender, which makes it both elegant and muscular looking. The taillights are also in line with the headlights, so if you look at it in profile, it looks like they’d meet if they continued on.

People need get excited about EVs and we need more than just futuristic looking sedans and hatchbacks. So far, 90-percent of EVs on the market are smart, practical, sensible vehicles. We need fun cars with beautiful designs and the Genesis X Convertible Concept could be just the thing. Unfortunately for all of us, it is unlikely that Genesis will put any of these X concept vehicles into production. But there is always hope…

Genesis unveiled the Electrified GV70 in mid-November 2021 but it left out some important technical specifications. The electric luxury crossover is now available to preorder at home in South Korea, and on this occasion, more details have been disclosed. Unlike the GV60 and its dedicated E-GMP electric car platform, the zero-emissions GV70 is based on the conventional model equipped with combustion engines.

We now get to find out the EV is equipped with a lithium-ion polymer battery pack featuring a capacity of 77.4 kWh with enough juice for 400 kilometers (249 miles). It’s worth noting South Korea also uses the WLTP test cycle applicable in European Union countries. Even though it’s not a bespoke electric car, it still supports fast charging at up to 350 kW, in which case the battery can be juiced up from 10% to 80% in as little as 18 minutes.

The Electrified GV70 comes as standard with a pair of motors for all-wheel drive, but the front one is automatically turned off to boost efficiency when its power is not needed. Genesis mentions the vehicle is 4,715 mm long, 1,910 mm wide, and 1,630 mm tall, with a wheelbase measuring 2,875 mm. 19-inch wheels come as standard, but customers can get a bigger 20-inch set.

2022 Genesis Electrified GV70

Both front and rear electric motors develop 215 hp (160 kW) each for a grand total of 429 hp (320 kW). It’s the same story with torque as the two e-motors pump out 350 Nm (257 lb-ft) to enable a massive 700 Nm (516 lb-ft). The EV punch enables a 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) sprint in 4.2 seconds, which should be plenty quick for most customers.

With an optional solar roof, bidirectional charging, active noise control, torque vectoring, and a boost mode, the Genesis Electrified GV70 is chock-full of features. Body rigidity is up by 24% compared to the combustion-engined crossover, while a center front seat airbag provides extra protection in case of an impact.

Following its domestic launch, the EV will arrive in additional markets in the coming months.

Genesis took its sweet time announcing plans to enter Europe as it wasn’t until last year when Hyundai’s luxury division revealed it would enter the Old Continent. It’s making up for the lost time by bringing nearly all of its products, save for the flagship G90 fullsize sedan. In addition, the stunning G70 Shooting Brake wagon is a Euro-only affair. And now, the GV60 has been confirmed.

Originally introduced in late September 2021, the electric crossover is a sister model of the mainstream Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6. It rides on the same dedicated E-GMP electric car platform and will serve as Genesis’ first EV in Europe. It’s scheduled to go on sale later this year and will be offered in three different versions: Premium, Sport, and Sport Plus.

The most frugal of them all will be able to cover 321 miles (517 kilometers), but the company isn’t saying whether the number is based on the WLTP cycle or it represents the firm’s own estimation.

The entry-level GV60 Premium will make do with a single electric motor producing 168 kilowatts sent to the rear wheels. The midlevel Sport is going to feature all-wheel drive courtesy of 168 kW + 74 kW motors, while the flagship Sport Plus has a pair of 160-kW motors. In addition, the most athletic of the bunch adds a tail-happy drift mode. Not only that, but there’s also a boost mode to unlock an extra 20 kW + 20 kW for 10 seconds.

All three trim levels will share a standard 12.3-inch infotainment system with wireless charging. At an additional cost, buyers will be able to order the Genesis GV60 in Europe with a panoramic sunroof, side cameras (instead of conventional glass mirrors), a Bang & Olufsen audio system, and heated seats.

The GV60 will be followed by two additional EVs by the end of 2022. Genesis isn’t willing to reveal their names just yet, but they’re probably the already revealed Electrified GV70 and Electrified G80. These two are not bespoke EVs since they’re based on the conventionally powered models.

Genesis already has two electric SUVs in its portfolio with the GV60 and Electrified GV70 pictured here – both introduced earlier this year. It would seem there’s room for one more if we were to rely on a new report from The Korean Car Blog. It is believed a larger SUV potentially called GV90 is earmarked for a market launch in 2023 to sit on top of the company’s lineup.

The future zero-emissions model is currently being developed and is expected to ride on the same E-GMP platform that has underpinned the aforementioned GV60. It’s a dedicated electric platform as opposed to the one used by the Electrified GV70, which boasts an adaptation of the gasoline model’s platform, there making some compromises in terms of packaging along the way.

2022 Genesis GV60

Logic tells us the Genesis GV90 is going to be mechanically related to large electric SUVs that both Hyundai and Kia are currently working on. The South Korean brands have already previewed their bigger family haulers in recent weeks with the SEVEN and EV9 concepts, respectively. Of course, with Genesis being the most luxurious brand of the trio, its own model will command a significant premium over its mainstream siblings.

These three should be the largest vehicles to utilize the E-GMP underpinnings and they’re all expected to feature three rows of seats. That being said, we wouldn’t rule out the possibility of a more premium four-seat configuration for the Genesis GV90 with ample rear legroom comparable to fullsize luxury sedans.

2022 Genesis GV60

To get an idea about the vehicle’s size, we will remind you the Kia EV9 concept is 4,930 millimeters (194 inches) long, 2,055 mm (81 in) wide, 1,790 mm (70 in) tall, and has a huge wheelbase stretching at a stately 3,100 mm (122 in). A dual-motor, all-wheel-drive system is highly probable, as is fast-charging at up to 350 kW.

Before coming out with the production model, Genesis could unveil a concept car to preview its range-topping SUV in the same vein as Hyundai and Kia have done. The tentative 2023 launch seems a bit too optimistic since the other two domestic brands haven’t even announced when they’ll roll out the production versions. A safer bet would be closer to the middle of the decade.

It has been a rather busy year for Genesis in terms of electric cars as Hyundai’s premium division has introduced no fewer than three models without combustion engines. Following in the footsteps of the Electrified G80 sedan and the GV60 crossover, the new Electrified GV70 is celebrating its world premiere today at the Guangzhou Auto Show in China.

Already confirmed to be sold in the United States, the zero-emissions crossover largely retains the design of its gasoline equivalent, with only small changes to the bumpers, a completely closed front grille with diamond shapes, and a charging port mounted behind the corporate Crest Grille. The swoopy interior is also a spitting image of the regular GV70, and that’s certainly a good thing since the cabin was already impressively posh.

2022 Genesis Electrified GV70

Unlike the aforementioned GV60 and its bespoke E-GMP platform, the Electrified GV70 follows the same recipe used by Genesis for the Electrified G80 by keeping the platform of the gasoline-fueled model. It will only be sold with all-wheel drive, but the premium crossover will switch to two-wheel drive to save battery energy when the extra power of the second motor is not necessary.

Equipped with a Boost Mode, the pair of electric motors will churn a combined 483 hp (360 kW) and 700 Nm (360 kW), which will be enough for a 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) sprint in just 4.5 seconds. A first for a Genesis model, the Electrified GV70 gets a dedicated e-Terrain Mode that will adjust the vehicle’s setting to better tackle tough roads.

2022 Genesis Electrified GV70

While the size of the battery remains a secret for the time being, we do know it lasts for over 500 kilometers (311 miles) per the CLTC testing cycle applied in China. In addition, fast charging at up to 350 kW is supported, meaning the state of charge can go from 10% to 80% in under 20 minutes. The energy stored inside the battery can be put to good use to power a toaster or another appliance as the Electrified GV70 is the latest zero-emissions model to offer bidirectional charging at up to 3.6 kW.

The technical specifications released so far apply only to the Chinese version, but Genesis says the new electric crossover will be available in North America as well. We’ve heard through the grapevine the Electrified GV70, which is due to go on sale in 2022, will be assembled for the United States at Hyundai’s Alabama plant from early next year, but nothing is official at the moment of writing.

It was back in April when Genesis introduced its first electric vehicle with the Electrified G80 before coming out with the GV60 later in August. It’s now almost time to see the third EV from Hyundai’s luxury division as the Electrified GV70 will premiere later this week in China during the 2021 Guangzhou Auto Show.

Much like the Electrified G80 (see below) we mentioned earlier, the new Electrified GV70 is going to be an EV adaptation of the regular GV70 equipped with combustion engines. In other words, it’s not going to ride on the E-GMP platform used by the GV60, but rather on the same underpinnings as the conventionally powered SUV.

How do we even know it’s the zero-emissions version of the GV70? It has the exact same design of the closed-off front grille we saw earlier this year on the Electrified GV70. In both cases, the diamond pattern discreetly features a “G” in one of the elements to provide access to the charging port mounted behind the grille.

Genesis Electrified G80

We can’t help but notice Genesis has also tweaked the front bumper by eschewing the larger air intakes of the gasoline-powered model for a cleaner look since the extra cooling is no longer necessary. The Electrified GV70 will certainly have a different rear bumper after removing the large exhaust tips of the conventional SUV.

The technical specifications remain shrouded in mystery for the time being, but we won’t be too surprised if these will be similar to those of the electric sedan. The G80 without a combustion engine has a pair of electric motors providing a combined output of 365 horsepower and 516 pound-feet (700 Newton-meters). With one motor at the front and another one at the rear, it gives the luxury sedan an all-wheel-drive layout. For greater efficiency, the front-mounted e-motor can be deactivated, thus enabling the large sedan to work in RWD mode and save precious energy.

Speaking of energy, the Electrified G80 gets its juice from an 87.2-kWh battery pack, with fast-charging capabilities at 350 kW likely to be supported. In the sedan’s case, the battery can go from 10% to 80% in 22 minutes, and that car also has a solar roof as well as bidirectional charging.

It is believed the Electrified GV70 will be assembled in the United States at Hyundai’s factory in Alabama from early next year. That would make it the first electric car from Genesis, Hyundai, or Kia to be put together in the US, with other EVs to follow.

News of a fully electric Genesis GV70 originally emerged at the beginning of May this year when parent company Hyundai announced the model in a presentation made to investors. We haven’t heard anything about the zero-emissions SUV since then, but a new report from Business Korea sheds more details about the forthcoming EV.

The official debut must be right around the corner taking into account production is scheduled to commence at the beginning of 2022. Likely to be called Electrified GV70 to mirror the larger Electrified G80, the new purely electric SUV is going to be assembled in the United States. Specifically, it will be put together at Hyundai’s factory in Alabama.

At this manufacturing facility, the South Korean brand is making the Elantra and Sonata sedans, the Tucson and Santa Fe SUVs, along with the newly added Santa Cruz pickup truck. The Electrified GV70 will be the first EV from Hyundai / Kia / Genesis to be assembled in the United States, and Business Korea claims additional electric models will follow in due course.

The decision to build the Electrified GV70 in Alabama was shared with the labor union on November 2 at the factory in Asan, a city in South Chungcheong Province in South Korea, during a job security committee meeting. In regards to the future EVs that could be added to the plant, some speculate the Ioniq 5 and EV6 could be built there as well, but nothing is official at this point.

Genesis’ owner Hyundai recently teased the Ioniq 7 concept as a three-row electric SUV coming in 2024, after the Ioniq 6 sedan scheduled to be unveiled at some point next year. All three Korean brands are preparing a slew of electric cars in their attempt to capture as much market share as possible during this transitional period of switching from cars with combustion engines to EVs.

After the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6, then came the Genesis GV60 as the more luxurious version of the trio. The dedicated electric crossover from South Korea was introduced in the second half of August when fully revealing images were published, but without any information regarding the technical specifications.

Come September 29, Genesis will disclose all the juicy details about its first bespoke EV, likely along with a more comprehensive photo gallery showing the GV60 inside and out. For the time being, we only know it utilizes the same E-GMP platform as its mainstream siblings from Hyundai and Kia, but with some cutting-edge tech exclusive to this model.

The GV60 has been confirmed to feature face detection as a neat way to open and close the doors, while the fingerprint detection system inside the cabin will allow the driver to start the electric button at the literal touch of a surface. A highly unusual rotating ball, officially known as the Crystal Sphere, will act as the gear selector, and we’re fairly certain Genesis has a few more aces up its sleeve for the premiere scheduled this Wednesday.

While technical specifications remain shrouded in mystery, we strongly believe the entry-level model will feature an electric motor mounted at the back for a rear-wheel-drive layout. More expensive trims levels will enable an AWD setup courtesy of an electric motor installed at the front axle. Reports state the GV60 won’t be as powerful as the 577-hp EV6 GT, but that remains to be seen.

Speaking of rumors, it is believed the Genesis GV60 has been engineered to support wireless charging and that the system will initially be available for a pilot program that will be conducted at home in South Korea. It could eventually be offered to all owners, and eliminate the hassle of having to use wires. That said, it goes without saying the charging power won’t be nearly as good as it is for E-GMP-based models, which can have their batteries recharged at up to 350 kW.

Genesis says full details will be disclosed this Wednesday, September 9, at 5 PM California time.

As cars gradually become rolling computers, yours truly rhetorically asks: What will they think of next? Face recognition technology is how Genesis would answer this question. Yes, the all-electric GV60 crossover is the first production model from Hyundai’s luxury division to boast something called “Face Connect.”

How does it work? The high-tech system relies on a near-infrared camera embedded into the B-pillar, specifically in the rear door. It recognizes faces “under any circumstances,” even at night or during a cloudy day. Once a pre-registered face is detected, the GV60’s doors lock or unlock without the owner having to use the smart key.

Some would argue such a feature is not necessary considering most cars already have a handsfree functionality, therefore making face recognition a bit redundant. There’s a pretty good chance it will end up as a function that customers will use a few times in the first months of ownership before sticking to the traditional way of locking and unlocking the vehicle.

That said, those who want the latest technologies available will appreciate the Face Connect system. There is one important benefit to having face recognition as it liberates the driver from having to carry the GV60’s keys at all times. It can even be left inside the vehicle and Face Connect will still work, making it ideal to use when heading to a location for various outdoor activities. Going running or swimming will remove the hassle of having to carry the key in your pocket.

According to Genesis, Face Connect can register up to two faces for a vehicle, and profiles can be created using the GV60’s built-in voice assistant. These can be deleted at any time and are safely stored inside the crossover without any security risks. The EV also benefits from a fingerprint authentication system, allowing owners to start the vehicle based on pre-registered biometric information to once again remove the need for a regular key.

With the GV60’s launch, Genesis is expanding its over-the-air software updates to support revisions to the suspension, brakes, steering wheel, and even airbags. These are on top of already available OTA updates for the navigation system, digital instrument cluster, head-up display, and infotainment.

Additional models will benefit from all these upgrades in due course, with the electric crossover leading the way.

It was only a few days ago when Genesis unveiled the GV60 and now the dedicated EV is making the headlines once again. This time around, gone is the rather eccentric neon green paint featured in the press images as a near-production prototype has been caught in a parking lot in South Korea wearing a less in-your-face paint: black.

It certainly seems less flashy than the electric crossover presented by Genesis, and dare we say it’s all for the better. This one too has the side cameras, but bear in mind these are not legal in many parts of the world, meaning most GV60s will have conventional side mirrors. The fancy wheels featuring an intricate spoke design are the same as seen in the official images, lending the company’s first bespoke electric car a special look.

As far as the interior is concerned, the prototype had the same navy-blue theme with contrasting neon green accents as the GV60 presented by Hyundai’s luxury division. Some would argue the difference between the subtle exterior and striking interior are a bit too much, but we’re glad Genesis is bold enough to offer such great diversity to cater to wider customer tastes.

While technical specifications have yet to be revealed, it’s easy to see the GV60 looks dramatically different than the mechanically related Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6. It will ride on the same E-GMP platform, potentially bringing rear- and all-wheel-drive configurations with single- and dual-motor versions, respectively.

Many have criticized the electric crossover’s design, but we think some of the complaints had to do with Genesis’ unusual paint color choice.
