As the model’s name implies, it’s essentially an SUV version of the Mercedes-EQS, carrying over the hardware and technology. That means it shares the same massive 56-inch Hyperscreen with three front displays housed within a single piece of curved glass. As standard, it gets electrically adjustable second-row seats while those individual third-row seats will cost extra.

Compared to the regular EQS upon which it’s based, the SUV is 7.8 inches (20 centimeters) taller for better ground clearance. It even has a dedicated off-road mode with a hill-descent feature, while rear-wheel steering is standard. The latter has a 4.5-degree maximum angle, but can be optionally bumped to 10 degrees via an OTA update.

As expected from a flagship luxury SUV, the Mercedes-EQS gets standard air suspension for a silky-smooth ride. The list of goodies includes a HEPA filter, ventilated seats, five-zone climate control, and a head-up display with AR. Speaking of comfort, the massive wheelbase of 126.3 inches (3,21 meters) makes the cabin supremely spacious. The distance between the axles is far greater than its rivals, even if the Model X also has three rows.

Mercedes will sell the 2023 EQS SUV with standard rear-wheel drive. The 450+ model has an electric motor mounted at the back where it makes 355 hp (265 kW) and 419 lb-ft (568 Nm). Step up to the 580 4Matic and you get AWD with a combined output of 536 hp (400 kW) and 633 lb-ft (858 Nm).

The Euro version will have a range of 660 km (410 miles) WLTP while the EPA rating is unknown. Replenishing the lithium-ion battery pack from 10% to 80% takes 31 minutes when DC charging at 110 kW. From 10% to 100% using a wallbox, it’ll take nearly 11 and a half hours.

Mercedes will build the EQS SUV in Tuscaloosa where the EQE SUV is going to be assembled as well. The larger of the two will be arriving at dealers in the US towards the end of the year. The smaller should follow shortly, with an electric G-Class to land in the coming years. These new dedicated EVs will join the EQA, EQB, and EQC crossovers, which are electric adaptations of their respective combustion-engined models.

The long road to the Mercedes EQS SUV’s is almost over as the three-pointed star has announced it will take the wraps off this month. Specifically, April 19 has been set as the debut date for what is going to be an online reveal. The 2022 Beijing Auto Show was supposed to take place this month, but the coronavirus pandemic has forced the organizers to postpone the show indefinitely. As a consequence, the high-riding EQS will celebrate its premiere on the Internet.

The switch from a liftback to an SUV body style has allowed the engineers to add a third row of seats, meaning the Mercedes EQS SUV will accommodate up to seven people. In addition, there’s going to be a dedicated off-road mode for the 4Matic all-wheel-drive system for those very few who will want to drive off the beaten path.

Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV

From the preliminary technical specifications disclosed thus far, we know the EQS SUV has the same 126.4-inch wheelbase as the liftback while being a tad wider. Standard air suspension is on the menu, along with a hill-descent feature and 10-degree rear-wheel steering. Inside, the enormous 17.7-inch touchscreen of the normal EQS is carried over, and so is the 12.3-inch display for the front passenger.

It’s going to be slightly bigger than the GLE but smaller than the GLS while offering the spacious cabin of the latter thanks to the dedicated electric platform. That third row we mentioned is going to be optional, while AWD will be standard courtesy of dual motors – one at the front and the other for the rear.

Following its April 19 debut, the 2023 Mercedes EQS SUV will be assembled in Tuscaloosa where it’s going to be joined by the smaller EQE SUV. A sedan version of the EQE is also in the works, while an EV equivalent of the C-Class is bound to arrive later this decade.

After the EQS and EQE electric sedans were revealed last year, Mercedes is now gearing up to introduce their SUV equivalents. The bigger of the two will be out first as the three-pointed star has now released a comprehensive batch of teaser images depicting camouflaged prototypes. The 2023 Mercedes EQS SUV is currently undergoing final testing before entering production in the United States at the Alabama factory towards the end of the year.

To iron out any last-minute kinks, Mercedes is conducting testing in various regions across the world, including in Germany at its Testing and Technology Center in Immendingen. Prototypes are also being evaluated in France, Finland, Austria, Dubai, Italy, Spain, the United States, Japan, China, Mexico, and South Africa.

The EQS SUV has been in development over the course of four years and will essentially be a high-riding version of the sedan, but with an optional third row of seats. It certainly won’t be able to match the ultra-low 0.20 drag coefficient of the sleek EQS, but it should still be among the sleekest SUVs ever. We’re expecting it to inherit the same massive 108-kWh battery, but likely won’t match the sedan’s maximum range of 785 kilometers (488 miles) WLTP due to being heavier.

As far as the lineup is concerned, it should mirror that of the EQS sedan, kicking off with a rear-wheel-drive 350 model packing a single electric motor with 288 hp. Up next should be the 450+ with 329 hp, followed by the 580 4Matic with dual motors and 516 hp. We’re expecting the range topper to be called EQS SUV 53 AMG 4Matic+ offering 751 hp.

Essentially an electric alternative to the GLS, the fullsize EQS SUV will boast air suspension as standard equipment, along with a dedicated offroad mode (with hill descent control). From a 360-degree camera to a front passenger display playing movies, the electric luxobarge will be chock-full of high-tech features.

Shortly after the EQS SUV’s debut later this year as a 2023MY, the smaller EQE SUV will follow suit. It too will be built at the plant Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

After a busy 2021 in terms of EV launches, Mercedes is gearing up for another year with numerous electric models. Chief of which will be the EQS SUV, which Autocar states will be previewed in near-production guise this April at the Beijing Motor Show in China. Fast forward to November, the Guangzhou Motor Show will allegedly host the world premiere of the smaller EQE SUV.

It goes to show how important the Chinese market has become for Mercedes, especially since the smaller EQB made its debut in the People’s Republic as well last year. The two newcomers will obviously serve as SUV equivalents of the EQS and EQE sedans introduced in 2021. However, the bigger of the two high-riding models will be more practical by offering three-row seating. It’s said to stretch at 5,160 mm (203 inches), thus making it long enough for a seven-seat cabin.

Autocar goes on to say the EQS SUV will be equipped with a 108-kWh battery feeding juice to a pair of electric motors. One will sit at the front while the other will drive the rear wheels to enable a standard AWD system. Expect up to 516 horsepower and 630 pound-feet (854 Newton-meters) of torque for the EQS 580 SUV, which will spawn a more luxurious version for the Maybach sub-brand. Interestingly, the upscale model might switch to the EQS 600 name to showcase its extra power over its Benz-branded counterpart.

As for the EQE SUV, it will make do with a smaller 90.6-kWh lithium-ion battery pack and is expected to be offered in a simpler rear-wheel-drive configuration. Of course, more expensive and potent variants will add a front electric motor for the 4Matic-badged flavors. The base trim level is said to pack 288 hp and 391 lb-ft (530 Nm), although these output numbers have not been confirmed.

We wouldn’t hold our breath for ultra-quick charging thanks to an 800V electrical architecture since both the EQE SUV and EQS SUV will come with only a 400V setup. Mercedes will assemble the zero-emissions SUV duo at its Tuscaloosa plant in Alabama, United States where the conventionally powered GLE and GLS are manufactured.

Both should be on sale either by the end of the year or early 2023, with the bigger EQS SUV coming first. Further down the line, more powerful AMG derivatives will arrive to mirror the AMG-badged EQE and EQS sedans unveiled in 2021.

Joining the EQA, EQB, EQE, and EQS will be a fifth electric SUV. We’re talking about the EQG slated to arrive in 2024. In the meantime, the EQC will probably switch to its second generation and will have a sedan equivalent serving as the electric C-Class.

Mercedes kick-started the “EQ” assault with the EQC in 2019 as an electric adaptation of the GLC crossover. Several other zero-emissions models have been launched since then, including the EQA and EQB, which also have their roots in crossovers originally developed with combustion engines. At the same time, the EQE and EQS sedans are ushering in a dedicated EV platform, which will also underpin this – the EQS SUV.

Previewed earlier this month at the IAA show in Munich by the Maybach EQS SUV concept, the high-riding version of Mercedes’ flagship electric car has now been spotted testing on a rainy day in Germany. Several prototypes have been captured on camera, and there’s a pretty good chance at least one of them is a regular Benz-branded EQS SUV.

The production model is unlikely to change too much compared to the concept before it, save for some larger headlights and taillights along with bigger side mirrors. Even though the test vehicles are covered in camouflage, it’s easy to see the overall shape is quite similar to that of the Maybach EQS SUV concept, which isn’t all too surprising since the IAA showcar already looked nearly ready to hit the assembly line.

The massive 24-inch wheels of the concept are unlikely to be offered on the production model, but a 22-inch set is probably going to be offered considering this size is already available for the EQS sedan. More practical and heavier than the regular model, the SUV version could be offered exclusively with a dual-motor setup with AWD since a single-motor, RWD configuration doesn’t seem enough for an EQS SUV, especially if we’re talking about the posh Maybach model.

At least one AMG version is probably in the pipeline taking into account the sedan was showcased in Munich in a high-performance EQS 53 specification with a massive 751 hp (560 kW) and 752 lb-ft (1,020 Nm) of torque. It wouldn’t be too far-fetched to assume a hardcore EQS 63 is in the offing, with even more power to take on the forthcoming Tesla Model X Plaid.

Mercedes has confirmed plans to unveil the production-ready EQS SUV in 2022 when it will also unveil the smaller EQE SUV. Come 2024, the company’s electric SUV lineup will be extended furthermore with a road-going EQG serving as an EV derivative of the legendary G-Class off-roader.

By releasing the zero-emissions EQA earlier this year, Mercedes has already signaled an EV onslaught. It joins the larger EQC and will soon be followed by an EQB, but these three models are all based on platforms initially developed for cars equipped with combustion engines. The first dedicated electric vehicles are the ones in the image above – EQS sedan, EQS SUV, and the EQE sedan.

The EQS models have now been spotted on a public road in Germany together with several other models carrying the three-pointed star. The sedan has less camouflage than ever before on its production body, while the SUV is heavily disguised and features provisional taillights. There’s a very good reason as to why we’re seeing more of the sedan because the regular EQS will be the first to come out, later this year. The EQS SUV will be launched in 2022.

It’s worth mentioning the standard EQS won’t actually be a sedan, but rather a more practical liftback in the same vein as the future BMW i4. Both dedicated EVs from Mercedes will ride on the Electric Vehicle Architecture platform that will also underpin the smaller EQE due late this year and its SUV counterpart arriving in 2022.

The German premium automaker has been relatively coy on details about the EQS, only revealing the sedan will go 435 miles (700 kilometers) between charges. It’s too soon to say, but the SUV could have a lower range considering it will be heavier than the liftback/sedan, but that remains to be confirmed. The standard EQS’ optional 56-inch Hyperscreen will be available for the high-riding model as well.

Another feature the two will have in common will be the electrically deployable door handles, which will remain flush with the doors when not in use to give the EVs a sleeker profile for better aerodynamic efficiency. Speaking of which, Mercedes hasn’t released details about the type of battery these EQS models will use, although the 2019 Vision EQS concept had a 100-kWh pack.

As a final note, the two lesser-known cars infiltrated in the Mercedes convoy are an electric sedan and SUV belonging to Chinese automakers Xpeng and Aiways. Presumably, Mercedes was benchmarking its two new EQS models against the two EVs from the People’s Republic.
