While Apple CarPlay support has been available for a while, Porsche certainly took its sweet time integrating Android Auto into its sports cars. The sixth-generation Porsche Communication Management is here not just for the Taycan, but also the 911, Panamera, and Cayenne models. By far the most important novelty is the wireless Android Auto support, but there are other changes coming with PCM 6.0.

The revised infotainment should be easier to navigate through thanks to new colored icons and other improvements made by Porsche after listening to complaints made by owners. For the first time, native integration of Spotify is added and offers access to 70+ million songs as well as about 3.2 million podcasts. You also get the new Go to Radio option, which will search for similar music based on what it’s currently playing.

PCM 6.0 benefits from an upgraded Voice Pilot voice assistant system making it easier for the user to access the car’s functions, such as checking out the owner’s manual, music streaming, and news. In the case of the Taycan, changes have been made to the Charging Planner to improve the calculation of charging sessions by changing the algorithm.

Porsche says the charging stations offering a higher power are now prioritized more than before so that you’ll spend more time driving and less time charging the battery. Another update implemented to the Charging Planner involves the time needed to start and end the charging process when it’s doing the math for the total driving time.

Interestingly, the Porsche Taycan with PCM 6.0 features a zoom function for charging stations by showing all the available chargers around you, regardless of whether they’re being used or not. Zoom out and you’ll only see the fast-charging stations. You can even sort the charging points based on their maximum output thanks to a newly added filter.

The Porsche Taycan has been assigned the role of Formula E’s safety car for the upcoming season. The all-electric sedan in Turbo S guise will celebrate its track debut on January 28-29 when the inaugural round is scheduled to take place in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia. It makes perfect sense for a high-performance electric car to lead the pack since the zero-emission car from Zuffenhausen is one of the fastest EVs in the world.

Naturally, the Taycan Turbo S is wearing a special Formula E livery along with roof lights and “22” logos to denote the number of drivers competing this year. The competition is entering its eighth season and Porsche will take its Safety Car all over the world during the 16 rounds planned for 2022:

Race Date Country Location
1 28th Jan. Saudi Arabia Riyadh
2 29th Jan. Saudi Arabia Riyadh
3 12th Feb. Mexico Mexico City

Changes to the car have been inside where the speedy EV was fitted with racing bucket seats featuring six-point seatbelts. In addition, there is a roll cage in the back, along with the wire harnesses necessary to control the extra lights on the outside, including those mounted in the front bumper. The purpose-built Taycan Turbo S comes along with a communication system and a fire extinguisher in case something goes wrong.

As a refresher, the range-topping Taycan has dual electric motors and all-wheel drive as standard. It packs up to 751 horsepower and runs to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 2.8 seconds en route to 162 mph (260 km/h). It’s not the fastest EV (excluding hypercars) in the world since the Tesla Model S Plaid can now do 175 mph while the Lucid Air Dream Edition maxes out at 168 mph (270 km/h).

Transitioning to the 2022 model year, the Porsche Taycan has not only gained wireless Android Auto, new colors, and the GTS trim level, but also a new Sport Turismo serving as the third body style. Truth be told, it’s essentially the Cross Turismo without the SUV traits like the body cladding on the wheel arches or the raised suspension.

It sits as low to the ground as the Taycan GTS Sedan with which it also shares the Panoramic Roof with Variable Light Control previously not available for the performance EV. It gives the owner the possibility to adjust the opacity of the large roof by selecting one of the four presets thanks to the built-in nine liquid crystal film segments. You can go from clear to matte, followed by Semi (at 40% opacity) and Bold (at 60%).

2022 Porsche Taycan GTS Sport Turismo

Mirroring the sedan, the wagon gets front fascia and side skirts available with the SportDesign package, along with 20-inch Turbo S wheels that come with a satin black look debuting with the GTS. There are numerous other black accents, noticeable on the headlights, rear badge, rear “Porsche” lettering, on the bottom section of the side mirrors, and also for the side window trim.

Upgrades over the 4S include the Turbo-sourced suspension specifically calibrated for the GTS, while the 390-mm brake rotors at the front axle are an improvement over the 360-mm setup you get with the 4S. Speaking of the brakes, these come with red calipers and can be optionally swapped out for a carbon-ceramic system.

2022 Porsche Taycan GTS Sport Turismo

The dual motors provide a total of 590 hp, enabling the GTS to neatly slot between the 462-hp 4S and the 670-hp Turbo. The 0-60 mph task takes a mere 3.5 seconds and customers get the same 93.4-kWh battery installed in the Turbo / Turbo S. If you can charge it at a rate of 270 kW, around 22 minutes will be necessary to increase the battery’s state of charge from 5% of 80%.

At $133,300, the GTS Sport Turismo commands a $1,900 premium over the equivalent sedan. Porsche is already taking orders for both and will begin to ship cars to customers in the second quarter of 2022.

Porsche unveiled the 2022 Taycan back in August with novelties like wireless Android Auto, optional Remote Park Assist system, and some splashy new colors including Rubystar and Riviera Blue. A more significant update that comes with the model year change is a new trim level positioned between the 4S and the Turbo.

The GTS is a mélange of 4S and Turbo features, much like the 911 GTS is seen by many as the sweet spot in the rear-engined sports car’s lineup. With Launch Control turned on, the new Taycan flavor packs 590 horsepower, well above the 462 hp of the 4S but still significantly less than the 670 hp of the Turbo. Much like the latter, it gets the bigger 93.4-kWh battery pack, but details regarding the range will be disclosed at a later date.

2022 Porsche Taycan GTS Sedan

It completes the sprint from a standstill to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds, but that will obviously drain the battery much quicker. Once that happens, charging at the maximum of 270 kW will replenish the battery’s level from 5% to 80% in only 22 minutes and 30 seconds. It’s all possible thanks to the electric sedan’s 800-volt architecture, enabling fast-charging capabilities.

In terms of design, the 2022 Porsche Taycan GTS gets the SportDesign front fascia as standard equipment, along with the high-gloss side window trim and the SportDesign side skirts, which come with “GTS” graphics. It borrows the 20-inch wheels from the Turbo S, but with an exclusive satin black appearance. The peeps from Zuffenhausen will also apply a dark treatment to the headlights, rear logo, lower portion of the mirrors, and even the “Porsche” lettering in the light bar at the back.

2022 Porsche Taycan GTS Sedan

The Taycan GTS utilizes the same suspension and other hardware as the Turbo, but Porsche says it has specially adapted the hardware for the new variant. The new trim has 390-mm brake rotors with six-piston calipers at the front axle or 30 mm bigger than those of the 4S. The 358-mm rear rotors with four-piston calipers are the same you’ll find in the 4S, but the calipers on both the front and rear are finished in red.

An adaptive air suspension is standard while carbon-ceramic brakes and rear-wheel steering will cost you extra. You can also spend more and get the 21-inch RS Spyder wheels as well as the Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control Sport. A new option for the Taycan introduced for 2022MY is the Panoramic Roof with Variable Light Control nine liquid crystal film segments. It comes with four selectable patterns depending on the level of privacy you want.

2022 Porsche Taycan GTS Sedan

Should you want to stick to the base GTS without any options, it’ll set you back a hefty $131,400 excluding the $1,350 for the delivery, processing, and handling fee.

It’s already available to order in the US where deliveries to early adopters will start in Q2 2022.

Taycan fans are in for a treat as Porsche will be diversifying the EV’s lineup later this month at the 2021 Los Angeles Auto Show. Joining the sedan and rugged Cross Turismo wagon (pictured below), a third body style is going to be officially revealed at the event. The German luxury brand isn’t going into any details regarding its identity, but the car hiding under a cover gives us an accurate understanding of what we’re about to see.

Even though it’s fully hidden, it is fairly easy to notice the new member of the Taycan family has a long roof (and rails). It can only be a Sport Turismo, without the extra plastic cladding and increased ride height of the Cross Turismo. It should follow the same recipe used by Porsche for its gasoline-fueled Panamera Sport Turismo, a sporty wagon with a low ride height and sports car DNA adapted wrapped around in a more practical package.

That’s not all as the LA show will also serve as the venue where Porsche is going to introduce an additional trim level for the Taycan. It’s described as being a “new, incredibly dynamic, drive variant” and will be positioned between the 4S and Turbo. This tells us we’re going to see a Taycan GTS since the iconic 911 sports car in the GTS specification is positioned between 911 4S and 911 Turbo.

It is widely believed the aforementioned Taycan Sport Turismo will also be of the GTS variety, and these two electric vehicles will be displayed alongside the 718 Cayman GT4 RS and the Panamera Platinum. The fifth and final premiere will be represented by the 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport, a hardcore version restricted to the track.

All five of them will be on display at the 2021 Los Angeles Auto Show from November 17 when the first press day is programmed.

Porsche has released sales numbers for the first three quarters of 2021 during which deliveries to customers rose by 13% compared to January – September 2020. To the surprise of no one, the company’s SUVs were by far the most popular, with the Cayenne claiming the sales crown with 62,451 units, followed closely by the smaller Macan crossover at 61,944 vehicles.

The real surprise is when you discover the identity of the last vehicle to climb the podium because it’s not the iconic 911. Yes, the Taycan electric sedan managed to beat the sports car in the sales race, claiming third place with a total of 28,640 EVs delivered so far this year. The zero-emissions model is only in its second full year on the market and has registered an increase in customer demand of 10% compared to the first three quarters of 2020.

The legendary 911 had to settle for fourth place, but it’s not as bad as it may seem because deliveries actually rose by 10% to 27,972 units, so it lagged only a little bit behind the Taycan of which the total number includes the Cross Turismo wagon. In fifth place came the Panamera / Panamera Sport Turismo grand tourer with 20,275 examples while the 718 Boxster / Cayman were dead last with 15,916 deliveries.

There’s going to be a new name on that list in 2022 when Porsche will introduce an electric crossover to serve as a next-generation Macan, but it will be offered exclusively as an EV and quite possibly with a different name. That’s because the gasoline-fueled Macan will soldier on for a few more years until the electric model will replace it altogether. To avoid confusion, the electric variant is rumored to adopt a fresh moniker.

The aforementioned 718 models are also expected to switch to an EV setup for the next generation, as hinted by the Mission R concept car unveiled last month at IAA in Munich. A smaller sedan positioned below the Taycan is rumored to come after the BMW i4 and Tesla Model 3, but that remains to be seen. There are also rumors of electric replacements for the Cayenne and Panamera, although these are unlikely to arrive until towards the end of the decade.

After the 2021 model year saw the introduction of a rear-wheel-drive sedan and the Cross Turismo wagon, the Porsche Taycan is understandably getting less significant updates for the upcoming 2022MY. That said, the much-awaited Android Auto integration is finally available for the high-performance electric sedan. That’s the good news since there’s some bad news to share as it only works with a wired connection by hooking up the smartphone to a USB-C port. It’s a bit disappointing considering much more affordable cars nowadays offer wireless Android Auto support.

Speaking of smartphones, the 2022 Taycan will be available with an optional Remote Park Assist system allowing owners to remotely control parking maneuvers without being behind the wheel by simply using a smartphone app. It works for both perpendicular and parallel parking spaces and it should come in handy in a tight spot when there’s not enough room to open the doors.

How does it work? Remote Park Assist relies on cameras and ultrasonic sensors to detect whether there’s enough space to park the car. When it finds a free space, it does all the heavy lifting by steering the Taycan and moving it forward and reverse provided the owner hits a button on the app’s interface. If the button is no longer pressed, the automatic parking maneuver stops.

The model year change comes along with improved thermal management and charging functions. Using the Turbo Charging Planner heats the battery pack at a slightly higher temperature than before, which means the battery is charged at a faster rate earlier in the charging cycle. That translates to a marginally shorter charging time. Not only that, but the excess heat from the Taycan’s electrical bits is now used to a greater extent for battery temperature regulation.

Last but certainly not least, Porsche is bringing back some retro-flavored colors made famous by the iconic 911 sports car back in the 1990s. These are available from Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur, giving buyers the chance to pick from no fewer than 65 Paint to Sample colors to complement the standard 17 hues.

Fancy colors include this striking Rubystar, but also Acid Green, Riviera Blue, Viola Metallic, and Moonlight Blue Metallic. If none of these exclusive paints tickle your fancy, there’s a Paint to Sample Plus option giving customers virtually endless ways to paint their Taycans, including special hues to match the owner’s preferred accessory.

Porsche mentions these changes are also coming to the long-roof Taycan Cross Turismo for the 2022 model year and that the updated EVs will arrive at dealers in the United States towards the end of the year.

As vehicles become rolling computers, sophisticated software is imperative so that all the onboard systems work harmoniously. We’re used to hearing about recalls involving mechanical issues of various natures, but with more technologically advanced cars hitting the streets, it’s the unstable software that could become a major culprit going forward.

Case in point, it wasn’t that long ago when Tesla had no other way but to recall nearly 300,000 vehicles in China over issues related to its controversial Autopilot self-driving feature. Fast forward to this week, Automotive News reports Porsche is on the verge of announcing a global recall for its first electric car – the Taycan sedan.

The issue apparently stems from a software glitch causing an abrupt loss of power. According to the report, Porsche will officially announce a worldwide recall in a matter of days. For the time being, a spokesperson contacted by Automotive News refused to comment on the seemingly impending recall. It is unclear how many Taycan sedans will be affected by the recall, but with the procedure set to be done on a global scale, it’s safe to say the software problem is not limited to a few cars.

Interestingly, the report mentions some owners have been experiencing a different problem with their electric sedans as the high-end EV switches to emergency mode on its own. US-spec Taycans are believed to be plagued with this issue, which has allegedly prompted an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The recall likely impacts only the sedan version of the Taycan as customer deliveries of the Cross Turismo wagon are just getting started. The Zuffenhausen brand is preparing a third EV by launching the next generation of the Macan crossover exclusively with zero-emissions propulsion in 2023. There are also rumors of a smaller electric sedan to take on the BMW i4 and Tesla Model 3, while the 718 Boxster and Cayman sports cars are only a few years away from embracing an electric powertrain.

Mansory is at it again. This time around, the hugely controversial German tuner has worked on the Porsche Taycan to give the high-performance electric sedan a far more aggressive look. Carbon fiber is the central theme of the aftermarket package as it has been used extensively on the outside. You’ll see it on the front air intakes, below and to the side of the front apron, as well as around the headlights.

The carbon fiber treatment continues on the side sills and mirror caps, not to mention as an extra side strip on the doors. Mansory has added a not-so-subtle trunk lid spoiler made out of the same lightweight material, while the aggressively designed rear apron is made entirely out of carbon fiber. The apron is available with or without the F1-like light in the center.

Beyond the reworked clothing, the Porsche Taycan also gets a new set of shoes. It now sits on a custom set of lightweight alloy wheels measuring 22 inches at both front and rear axles. These one-piece cast wheels have narrow spokes intended to maximize the dissipation of the frictional heat caused during braking. Mansory will paint the brake calipers in any desired colors and will also offer those wheels with a flashy diamond-polished rim surface.

The tuner says it can apply all sorts of leather on every single piece inside the cabin. The stitching can be had in a great variety of colors, including one to match the vehicle’s exterior paint. At an additional cost, the Taycan’s steering wheel can be bathed in carbon fiber and leather. Rounding off the upgrades are new floor mats as well as an aluminum pedal set.

Being a purely electric vehicle, there aren’t any performance-related tweaks as you get with Mansory’s projects based on high-end vehicles equipped with combustion engines. Not that the Taycan needs more horsepower or torque, especially if we’re talking about the flagship Turbo S version delivering hypercar levels of acceleration.

With a starting price of $79,900 in the United States, the Taycan isn’t exactly what we’d call an accessible electric vehicle. If the zero-emissions sedan is out of your reach, there’s now a much more affordable way to get behind the wheel of the company’s first EV. The Taycan has been added to the Porsche Drive Subscription and Rental program in the US and you can drive one for $295.

It’s worth pointing out the asking price is available only if you choose to rent the Taycan for at least four days, meaning you’ll end up paying at least $1,180. If you want to drive Porsche’s electric sports sedan for 1 to 3 days, the price per day increases to $335. You’ll be getting the 4S version, with the entry-level RWD model to be added to the rental program later this spring at a lower price tag.

Meanwhile, the base model can be had with a subscription plan, in which case paying $2,500 allows you to drive the entry-level Taycan for an entire month. Step up to the more powerful 4S version and the monthly fee increases to $3,250. Porsche goes on to say that all prices exclude taxes and fees, so you’ll have to either visit the Porsche Drive website or download the Android / iOS smartphone app to access detailed information.

Porsche Drive originally came out back in October 2017 as a pilot program in Atlanta. It’s been greatly expanded significantly since then and is currently available in nine metro areas: Atlanta, Georgia; Houston, Texas; Phoenix, Arizona; and in California in Irvine, Los Angeles, Monterey, San Diego, San Francisco, and San Jose. Porsche promises to roll out the rental and subscription program in additional regions across the US.

Customers get to pick from a rental plan for shorter periods, a single-vehicle subscription for one or three months, or a multi-vehicle subscription for one month at a time. The latter allows clients to swap between models, be them two-door sports cars, four-door models, and SUVs.
