Currently, the BMW i4 eDrive35 stands as the most affordable electric BMW available. Since the iX1 is not available in the United States, the i4 serves as our gateway into Bavarian electrification. As a result, it is expected to become one of the most popular BMW EVs on the market, if not the most popular. Fortunately, BMW is introducing new options and packages for the 2024 model year i4 eDrive45, much to the delight of potential customers.

The 2024 i4 eDrive35 can now be ordered with several new packages: the M Sport Package, Convenience Package (ZCV), and Premium Package (ZPP). The Convenience Package includes lumbar support, heated front seats, Iconic Sounds Electric, and wireless charging. On the other hand, the Premium Package incorporates everything from the Convenience Package but also adds a heated steering wheel and the curved display with a head-up display.

Unfortunately, there is no information available regarding the pricing of these packages or any new individual options that may be offered. However, one notable new option for the i4 is the Icon Adaptive LED Headlights with Laserlight. Additionally, it remains unclear whether the BMW i4 will receive any new standard equipment. Nonetheless, there is news of a slight price increase for the i4, with a $200 bump from $52,000 to $52,200.

The BMW i4 eDrive35 serves as the entry-level model and is the least powerful and fastest variant in the lineup. It utilizes a single rear electric motor, which is the same motor found in the pricier i4 eDrive40. However, the motor is detuned for the base model, producing 282 horsepower compared to the 335 horsepower of the more expensive version. The entry-level i4 also offers a slightly lower maximum range of 256 miles, while the higher-end model can reach up to 301 miles. Nevertheless, the performance discrepancy is minimal, as BMW claims a 0-60 mph time of 5.8 seconds for the base model, just 0.3 seconds slower than the more expensive variant.

For many customers, outright performance and range are not the primary concerns when choosing an electric vehicle. Instead, they seek comfort, well-equipped features, and practicality, especially at a lower price point. With the introduction of these new optional extras, the BMW i4 eDrive35 is poised to become even more appealing to potential buyers. BMW’s intention is to make the model even more popular than it already is. Moreover, the i4 eDrive35 presents a more cost-effective option overall, allowing customers to acquire a well-rounded electric car with decent range at an attractive price.

The BMW i4 eDrive35 has been available for purchase in the U.S. for a little while, but it will now also be available for those in the UK. The starting price for the entry-level BMW i4 is £49,995 and it comes with the standard ‘Sport’ trim. The car has a single rear-mounted electric motor generating 282 horsepower, and it can reach 0-60 mph in 5.8 seconds. The i4 eDrive35 has a range of 299 miles on a single charge, which is decent but not as much as other models due to its smaller battery pack of 66 kWh.

Standard features include LED headlights, 18-inch wheels, heated front seats, and a black Senstatec/cloth interior. The M Sport package adds aerodynamic visuals, Shadowline black exterior trim, 18-inch aerodynamic wheels, an M Sport steering wheel, and an Alcantara/Sensatec interior with blue contrasting accents. Due to its lower cost, the BMW i4 eDrive35 may become the volume seller in the UK.

This vehicle is ideal for city-dwellers who have access to charging stations and don’t require long-range batteries. Despite its lower power output, the i4 eDrive35 has sufficient acceleration of under six seconds, and its rear-wheel drive and premium interior make it an attractive option for its price.

“Following the huge success we have seen with BMW i4 in the Corporate and Fleet markets since launch, we are very pleased to bring the eDrive35 model to the UK portfolio. We’re offering this model in Sport and M Sport trims, which both include an impressive level of standard equipment, including 18 inch alloy wheels, alongside a range of up to 299 miles. This latest model to join the i4 range will make electric driving accessible to even more of our customers.” said Steve Roberts, General Manager, Corporate Sales, BMW UK.

The BMW i4 electric car was modified by AC Schnitzer for the “Tune It! Safe!” initiative. Supported by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure Germany, the nationwide campaign puts the spotlight on modifying cars in a safe way while fully respecting regulations. For the eighth time, AC Schnitzer is a promoter of the initiative by preparing a customized version of BMW’s electric gran tourer. On display at the 2022 Essen Motor Show, the tricked-out i4 boasts a police car signaling system from Hella and a Foliatec wrap to mimic the look of an actual vehicle used by the German authorities.

AC Schnitzer decided to go with the BMW i4 M50 and change its wheels for a custom 20-inch set with Hankook Ventus S1 evo 3 tires measuring 255/35 R20 front and 265/35 R20 rear. AC Schnitzer lowered the i4’s suspension by 25 millimeters (one inch) at both axles by fitting an aftermarket spring kit. A comprehensive aerodynamic package encompasses a beefier front spoiler with an added splitter and canards.

The BMW i4 M50 “police car” also has a carbon spoiler on the tailgate along with a plastic roof edge spoiler. Next, AC Schnitzer fitted winglets on the rear fenders, above the taillights, to create a visual connection with the spoiler. A rear skirt protection film rounds off the changes on the outside. The changes on the inside are limited to the tuner’s aluminum pedal set with footrest, along with a custom cover for the iDrive controller and keyholder made from the same material.

Below, you can see a full gallery of the car. [Source: AC Schnitzer]

BMW’s next generation car architecture is just around the corner and it’s called Neue Klasse. The refreshed platform takes an EV-first approach and will underpin most of the BMW series models starting in 2025. Eventually, after 2030, all BMWs will be built on the Neue Klasse architecture. In 2023, we will get a first glimpse at the Neue Klasse in form of a concept car.

BMW has recently hosted an Innovation & Sustainability Day in Germany where several electric topics were discussed. Frank Weber, BMW’s chief technology officer, met with media to discuss the company’s future electric car plans. The first topic on the agenda were the future round cells supplied by EVE, CATL and Nortvolt which will maximize power, increase the range and slower degradation.

According to Weber, the new 800V system with a fast charger will increase the electric range by 30 miles for every minute of charging. Additionally, the new car platform can accommodate single, dual or quad synchronous SSM motors, with the latter being currently tested by the M Division. When it comes to the power output, according to Car Magazine, it will allegedly start at around 270 horsepower and go as high as 1340 hp.

Of course, just cause the opportunity is there, that doesn’t mean BMW will go over 1,000 hp for future cars. In the end, a proper balance between range and power is required. But it is possible that special BMW M models might pierce through the 1 megawatt (1341 hp) ceiling. Battery packs are also rumored to range from 75 kWh up to 150 kWh, and possible more in the distant future.

The first two models to emerge under the Neue Klasse family of cars is the new BMW i3 sedan and the second generation BMW iX3. Both models are expected in 2025-2026.

BMW’s hottest electric car – the i4 M50 – heads to the Autobahm for a few hard launches followed by a top speed run. It had the optional IconicSounds Electric function co-developed with four-time Grammy winner Hans Zimmer. Of course, the sounds are artificial and many prefer the totally silent experience, but we can all agree BMW has created some of the most interesting EV noises.

The performance numbers back up the futuristic soundtrack as the i4 M50 did 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 3.72 seconds, thus notably beating the 3.9-second time quoted by the German automaker. Perhaps more impressive is the sprint from 62 to 124 mph (100 to 200 km/h), which took approximately eight and a half seconds. EVs tend to run out of puff at higher speeds, but BMW’s zero-emissions 4 Series Gran Coupe has pulling power for a longer time.

The 141 mph (227 km/h) top speed is nothing to write home about and is on par with the electronically limited 140 mph (225 km/h) mentioned by the Bavarian brand in the specs sheet. Numbers aside, those who have driven the i4 M50 praised its handling despite its extra bulk compared to an M3 Sedan or an ALPINA B3. With continuous advancements made in battery tech by improving energy density, future EVs could shed some weight for better performance and efficiency.

A true electric M is unlikely to arrive before 2025 when the Neue Klasse will debut. BMW might have teased a sports car without a combustion engine in a recent presentation to journalists, but even if it’s coming, don’t expect to see it anytime soon.

With wait times as long as 18 months, the i4 is already shaping up to be one of the most successful products in the BMW’s history. During a recent media event in Regensburg, BMWBLOG interviewed Frank Weber, BMW Board Member responsible for Development. Among many topics, including the Neue Klasse, Weber talked about the success of the i4 lineup and what it means for BMW.

The BMW i4 Gran Coupe launched earlier this year and it’s currently offered in two variants: i4 eDrive40 and an M-tuned i4 M50. A third variant i4 eDrive35 will arrive next year. Of course, it’s the i4 M50 that excites customers the most. Mostly because the BMW i4 M50 is a seriously quick car. Its dual electric motors make 536 horsepower and 586 lb-ft of torque, which are fed by an 80.7 kWh battery pack. While using launch control, we were able to snag a 0-60 mph time of 3.9 seconds. So it comes as no surprise that customers are lining up to place orders for the electric M Performance model.

“The highest volume M product we will have is the i4 M50,” said Weber. “We will increase production even more next year when we expect no bottlenecks or chip shortages.” We asked Weber which markets lead the way for i4 demand. “Across the board,” Weber told us. According to Weber, customers like the i4 because it simply looks like a BMW. “From a driving experience also, people are surprised how much the i4 is a BMW,” said Weber.

Next, Weber said that the BMW i4 demand has certainly exceeded their expectations and because of supply chain constrains, the product is lower than he’d want to. But BMW is not stopping here. Weber says that the company is currently assigning six Gigafactories. They’ll be strategically positioned where the company is making electric vehicles in order to cut logistics costs. “A single gigafactory spawns over 200 hectare (495 acres),” Weber added.

Last week, BMW introduced a new generation of battery technology, developed internally, to be unveiled in the “NEUE KLASSE” electric vehicles in the 2025 timeframe. The cylindrical cells are a departure from the prismatic battery format BMW has previously used. Cylindrical batteries offer several advantages over prismatic batteries that BMW will take advantage of. Of course, the BMW i4 models continue to use the Gen5 battery tech.

In the United States, the 2023 BMW i4 M50 starts at $65,900 and has an EPA-rated maximum range of 227 miles. But recent independent tests showed that the i4 M50 with 20 inch wheels can achieve a range of 268 miles, 41 more than the EPA rating.

BMW M has commenced testing of high-performance electric vehicles and the first order of business was to modify the BMW i4 M50. It gets a wider body with fender flares and a face transplant from the M4 Coupe. Interestingly, the rear doors have been removed.

BMW M goes on to mention its electric sports car has been equipped with all-wheel drive. The use of xDrive typically implies there are two electric motors – one at the front and the other at the rear, driving the axles independently. However, the modified M EV has a four-motor setup with each motor driving a wheel.

Although no power figures have been disclosed, adding two extra electric motors has certainly increased output compared to the i4 M50 by a significant amount. Therefore, we’re assuming a healthy bump over the 544 horsepower and 795 Newton-meters (586 pound-feet) of torque available in the i4 M50. Rather than cramming in two more e-motors and calling it a day, BMW M says it has engineered a “completely new drive concept.”

Without going into specifics, the high-performance division vaguely mentions an “integrated driving dynamics control system” and wider front and rear tracks compared to the i4 M50. The prototype’s quad electric motors are linked to a “central, highly integrated control unit” that monitors the driving conditions and driver’s inputs to calculate the optimal power via a multi-plate clutch and differentials delivery within milliseconds.

BMW is testing the i4 Coupe on the road and mentions it has modified the interior to accommodate a wide variety of measuring devices to scan everything that is happening while the car is in motion. This rolling test laboratory will eventually lead to the launch of BMW M’s first full-fat M electric car.

Sales of the BMW iX and i4 have only just begun in the United States. And yet, there’s already a recall for both models. The recall is for a software glitch that occurs on BMW iX and i4 models when the cars are put into valet mode. While in valet mode, the cars won’t display certain vehicle information in the driver’s display, information that must be available, per regulations.

BMW says 6,930 vehicles (3,166 iXs and 3,764 i4s) are being recalled and brought into dealerships for a free software update. Both the BMW iX and i4 use the brand’s newest iDrive 8 system and they’re currently the only cars on sale to use them (and will be until the new 7 Series, i7, and X7 LCI debut). Both cars are incredibly important to the brand. They’re both the first of their kind for BMW: the iX is the brand’s first full-size electric SUV and the i4 is its first electric sports sedan. But it looks like some glitches are still being ironed out.

The BMW iX is a monster of an SUV, especially in its xDrive50-spec. With dual motors, making 516 horsepower, it’s far quicker than people might expect. And the i4 M50 is a fine car overall but damn it’s fast, thanks to its 536 horsepower from dual motors. Both cars are good to drive but I think the iX is more impressive, considering what it is. Hopefully these are the last of the recalls, so customers can enjoy their all-electric Bimmers.

Of course, with more and more electric cars coming on the road, and with more tech than ever, issues are bound to appear. Some of them might be even different than wha we currently experience in gasoline-powered cars. So for that reason, it’s always worth looking into a BMW Extended Warranty which also covers issues with electric cars.

Norwegian Bjørn Nyland regularly performs car tests over 1,000 kilometers route and the latest car to join that select club is the BMW i4 eDrive40. According to the Nyland, the i4 40 managed to cross the 1,000 km distance in 9 hours and 20 minutes. The much more powerful BMW i4 M50 needed 10 hours and 10 minutes over the same distance, but the test as performed during the winter season which has an impact on the range. In February, Bjørn Nyland also sent a BMW iX xDrive50 to the 1,000-kilometer test and also needed 10 hours and 10 minutes.

The YouTuber says that that the current hype surrounding the 800-volt technology of some vehicles is unjustified. In real life, he showcases that BMW i4 eDrive40 can also be used with the 400-volt charging technology with more than 200 kW. Of course, he also recommends to resort to fast charging only when absolute needed since it can have an effect on your battery life. The BMW i4 doesn’t sacrifice any charge time versus the Tesla Model 3, either. The Model 3 can technically charge faster, at 250 kW compared to the i4’s 200 kW, however the BMW i4 can charge at its peak speed for longer, allowing both cars to recharge about 80 percent of their battery in 30 minutes.

The BMW i4 eDrive40 uses a single rear-mounted motor, making 250 kW (335 horsepower), which is fed electricity by an 84 kWh battery pack (81.5 kWh usable). On Level 2, the BMW i4 can charge up to 11 kW, which will take the vehicle from 0 to 100 percent in just under 8 hours. The DC fast charger can charge up to 90 miles of range in 10 minutes at top speed. Let’s take a look!

On Friday, June 3, BMW opened its first ever “BMW Future Lab” in Chicago. The small luxury popup was designed to showcase the brand’s future of electrification and sustainability. There were several different stations to check out and some cars to see on display, at the Chicago Yacht Club. As part of the VIP list, we had the chance to take a tour of the Future Lab ahead of its reveal to the public, as well as see a presentation from Nicholas Gerstner, BMW of North America Product Manager.

The two cars on display were the BMW iX and i4. The former was a BMW iX xDrive50, the current top-of-the-line model and BMW’s best electric car. The BMW i4 M50 that as there was in San Remo Green, which is one of the hottest new BMW colors. There was also a BMW iX augmented reality experience, which allowed visitors to see how the iX’s kidney grille can repair itself from scratches. BMW also offers another unique experience: Digital Mosaic. Consumers will be asked to submit photos on-site and each photo will create a tile revealing a piece of the mosaic image. BMW will turn the mosaic into an NFT and one winner will – digitally – take that home.

There were a few other small stations, such as one where you could customize your own sustainable succulent, with “crystal toppings,” to take home. These Future Labs will continue to popup in Pittsburgh, Minneapolis, Cleveland, Detroit, Columbus, St. Louis, and Kansas City. Though, multiple popup events will take place in Chicago, Cleveland, and Detroit. If you’re in one of those cities and are interested in checking out BMW’s future electrified products, you might want to keep your eyes and ears peeled for when they pop up.
