General Motors is fast-tracking its transition to electric vehicles by launching a variety of EVs across several segments of the market. The newly developed Ultium platform serves as the backbone for the zero-emissions onslaught, and early signs are showing it’s a success. Even though the 2024 Silverado EV debuted less than a month ago, it has already racked up more than 110,000 reservations.

Meanwhile, the much more expensive GMC Hummer pickup truck together with its SUV equivalent have generated combined interest in excess of 59,000 reservations. At the same time, BrightDrop vans are also in high demand as more than 25,000 reservations have been made so far. No numbers have been provided for the Cadillac Lyriq of which customer deliveries are scheduled to begin in the coming months.

Bear in mind Chevrolet has already announced the Equinox EV and Blazer EV will go on sale during the 2024 model year, so GM has a lot on its plate when it comes to diversifying its electric offerings. To make it happen, the North American conglomerate has already invested more than $14 billion in 10 states across the country since 2020 and will spend a further $7 billion to boost battery cell and EV assembly capacity.

GM head honcho Mary Barra said one of the short-term objectives is to sell 400,000 purely electric vehicles in North America through 2023. However, the future looks grim for the Bolt EV and Bolt EUV as the factory in Orion Township, Michigan where the two are made will be repurposed for other products. It’s necessary to reach an overall target for 2026 of producing 600,000 electric trucks by the end of 2025.

Getting back to the Silverado EV, GM says more than 240 fleet operations have made reservations for the fullsize electric pickup. In addition, BrightDrop has lured in some big names, including Walmart and FedEx Express, which will be using their cargo vans. While no reservations numbers have been made public for the Lyriq, GM is happy to report it won’t organize a new round of reservations because the backlog is already pretty big. Instead, Cadillac will begin to take customer orders after the Debut Edition hits the market in March.

The Chevrolet Bolt EV along with the recently added Bolt EUV might be living on borrowed time. This week, parent company General Motors detailed a new plan to invest a whopping $7 billion in Michigan to build electric vehicles and batteries. As part of the announcement, GM said the factory in Orion Township where the two Bolt models are made will evolve into something else.

While the zero-emissions hatchback and crossover will remain in production during the factory’s conversion, there’s no word what will happen after that. GM intends to begin the revamp right away and end the transformational process by 2024. As to what will become of the Bolt EV and Bolt EUV, your guess is as good as ours.

CNET’s Roadshow contacted GM, but a spokesperson refused to comment about the fate of the Bolt duo. What we do know for the time being is the overhauled facility will be tasked to assemble the 2024 Silverado EV and a fully electric GMC Sierra. With the smaller electric cars tracing their roots to old architectures, the writing may be on the wall for the two Bolt models.

There’s also the issue with Bolt’s heavily tainted past as the electric hatch has had a tumultuous life due to numerous recall campaigns. The fire hazard has prompted a $2-billion recall, and even though LG Chem is paying the bill, this has certainly put the Bolt in a bad light. Consequently, Chevy might want to start fresh with an all-new model that would sit on a more advanced platform and adopt an entirely different moniker.

Another plausible scenario is the Bolt EUV will die to make room for the already announced Chevy Equinox EV. The regular Bolt hatchback might be discontinued without even an indirect successor since small cars are not exactly popular in North America.

Following a rather exhausting teaser campaign, the 2022 Chevy Bolt hatchback is finally here. The electric car launched in 2017 has already racked up more than 100,000 sales, with 75 percent of customers in the United States buying a General Motors product for the first time. To sustain the strong sales momentum, the company with the bowtie emblem is giving the electric hatch some revisions.

The Chevy Bolt EUV crossover is joining the hatchback for MY2022

For the 2022 model year, the Chevy Bolt boasts a redesigned, more upright front fascia as well as revised LED front and rear lighting signatures. The daytime running lights positioned up high at the front lend the zero-emissions hatchback a more modern look and separate it from the pre-facelift variant. These subtle changes have worked wonders for the Bolt, but the more significant revisions are actually inside.

From the instrument panel and controls to the seats and gear shift lever, a lot of upgrades have been implemented inside. For example, the 2022 Chevy Bolt has a revamped 10.2-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system with built-in climate controls. It’s accompanied by an 8-inch driver’s display that can be reconfigured to show a variety of details depending on preferences.

The overhauled electronic gear shift boasts pull toggles and push buttons, allowing Chevy to free up more space inside. The 2022 Bolt has also received a one-pedal driving button to enhance regenerative braking by keeping the system active between drive cycles.

You’ll also notice a flat-bottomed steering wheel with the company’s logo blacked-out and the aforementioned Regen on Demand paddle. Those seats mentioned earlier have a triangular geometric pattern and come with contrasting color stitching.

Equipped with a 65-kWh, lithium-ion battery pack, the 2022 Chevy Bolt EV can cover up to 259 miles (416 kilometers) on a full charge, according to GM’s estimations. Thanks to standard DC fast-charging capabilities, owners gain 100 miles (160 kilometers) of range in as little as half an hour. The battery comes with an active thermal management system and is backed by an 8-year / 100,000-km limited warranty.

The 2022 Chevy Bolt EV is powered by a single electric motor producing 200 horsepower (155 kilowatts) and a near-instant torque of 360 Newton-meters (266 pound-feet).

Perhaps the best part about the 2022 Bolt is its significantly lower asking price as it has gone down by more than $5,000 compared to the model it replaces. It now starts at $31,995 before any applicable incentives. For your money’s worth, Chevy installs a high-definition rearview camera and a lot of safety kit: front pedestrian braking, automotive emergency braking, lane keep assist, forward collision alert, lane departure warning, and others.

At an additional cost, the 2022 Chevy Bolt EV can be had with adaptive cruise control, HD Surround Vision, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also available, along with wireless smartphone charging and Wi-Fi hotspot through a 4G LTE connection.

Chevy will have the updated Bolt EV on sale in the United States this summer.

The Chevrolet Bolt EUV has been a long time coming considering General Motors first filed to trademark the electric crossover’s name back in April 2019. Spy shots emerged about a month later, but it wasn’t until August that year when the model was officially announced. There have been plenty of teasers since then, and the latest preview of the Bolt EUV announces when the reveal will take place.

Chevrolet will unveil both the updated Bolt hatchback and its crossover companion on Sunday, February 14. It has teamed up with Walt Disney World for the double world premiere to “show how magic can take place when the imagination is electrified.” The latest teaser video highlights the tie-up between the two brands, but more importantly, we can see more of the Bolt EUV’s metal.

The rear end design is almost entirely revealed, showing the LED graphics of the taillights and a glossy black bar extending across the entire width of the tailgate. The bowtie emblem appears to have a dark finish as well unless the lighting is playing tricks on us. The “Bolt EUV” lettering is prominently featured in the bottom-left corner of the tailgate, with some of the letters finished in blue.

Towards the end of the 15-second clip, we receive confirmation of a rumor that has been floating around the World Wide Web for a while. The Bolt EUV is getting a sunroof, which the current Bolt lacks. It remains to be seen whether the updated regular hatchback will be getting one, too. Not displayed during the video, but a previous teaser showed the zero-emissions crossover will be getting sequential LED turn signals, a Chevy-first.

A recent preview of the Bolt EUV indirectly hinted the vehicle will offer a maximum range between cycles of nearly 280 miles (451 kilometers), but we’ll have to wait for an official confirmation from Chevrolet. What we do know for sure is the small electric crossover is one of the 22 GM products scheduled to receive the Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving system by 2023.

Following its official debut next month, the 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV and hatchback will enter production this summer.

The Chevrolet Bolt facelift was supposed to come out for the 2021 model year, but that didn’t happen due to delays caused by the coronavirus pandemic. The electric small hatchback should be well worth the wait as now we’re hearing the company with the bowtie emblem has “listened to customers” while developing the mid-cycle update.

That’s the promise made by Steve Majoros, Chevrolet’s Vice President of Marketing, in a recent interview with our colleagues at GM Authority. While he didn’t go into specific details, it’s refreshing to hear customer feedback remains relevant, even when an automaker is preparing only a facelift compared to a next-generation model.

GM has had an extensive teaser campaign for the 2022 Bolt, but the model previewed so far has actually been the new EUV. Essentially a crossover version, the slightly larger model will ride on the same GM BEVII architecture used by the hatchback, with both slated to adopt the Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving system.

While the outgoing Bolt offers 259 miles (416 kilometers) of range, a recent teaser suggests Chevy has made improvements to the vehicle’s efficiency. The EV is expected to cover roughly 277 miles (445 kilometers) between charges, but it’s unclear whether it will be from the same 66-kWh lithium-ion battery or a larger pack.

One of the issues expected to be addressed with the upcoming 2022MY is the availability of a sunroof, at least in the case of the Bolt EUV. The facelift will also see the introduction of sequential LED turn signals – representing a first for a production Chevrolet model. Aside from exterior revisions, the facelift is going to bring some improvements throughout the interior.

Following its world premiere in February, the 2022 Bolt in both hatchback and crossover body styles will enter production at GM’s Lake Orion factory in Michigan from this summer and should hit the market later this year.

General Motors did more than just tease the Cadillac Celestiq today as it also provided another glimpse at the Chevrolet Bolt EUV. A new teaser image + video combo allows us to hop behind the new steering wheel of the Bolt crossover and also check out the fully digital instrument cluster. The very first model from the bowtie company to offer Super Cruise hands-free driver assistance system will debut next month, together with a refresh for the regular Bolt.

From previous teaser episodes, we got to learn the Bolt EUV will mark another premiere for Chevy by being the first production car to use sequential LED turn signals. Both flavors of the EV will come only in a front-wheel-drive configuration and are scheduled to enter production this summer. The crossover is reportedly getting an optional sunroof, which the normal Bolt hasn’t offered so far.

The teaser released today during the digital-only CES 2021 shows a light bar mounted within the steering wheel rim to show the status of Super Cruise. In addition, the steering wheel incorporates a camera to monitor the driver and make sure they’re paying close attention to what’s up ahead. Seeing the advanced semi-autonomous driving system in a small and affordable car goes to show the technology is ready to trickle down after originally debuting a few years ago on the Cadillac CT6.

While GM is working on Ultium batteries promising up to 450 miles (724 kilometers), the two Bolt models are not going to use the new battery tech and therefore will have a lower range. Judging by the battery charge level displayed in this teaser and the 235 miles of available range, we’re guessing the Bolt EUV will do 270-280 miles between charges. We’re getting the impression some important upgrades will be made inside the cabin in terms of quality, with nicer materials here and there. The Electric Utility Vehicle (EUV) will likely offer a roomier cabin since there could be a bump in size over the standard hatchback.

With production beginning this summer, it means customer deliveries of both Chevy Bolt models will probably begin before the end of 2021.

The competition in the pure electric car vehicle segment is heating up. Chevrolet’s all-new Bolt EV is one of the pioneers and we recently had a chance to put the award winner through its paces along the northern California coast.

The Bolt has an impressive 238 mile EPA rated electric range and is a practical four-door hatch back with seating for up to five. The base price of the Bolt with the Federal Tax credit is just under $30,000.

No one else can provide this kind of range in a pure EV until more than double the price. The Bolt has racked up Motor Trend Car of the Year, Green Car of the Year, North American Car of the year and earned a place on Car and Driver’s10 Best.

Being ground up designed as an EV, Chevrolet was able to be incredibly thoughtful in its design. The 60 kWh battery is housed along the floor pan and the 200 hp/ 266 lb-ft of torque electric motor powers just the front wheels. The Bolt is able to bolt – no pun intended – from 0-60 in a respectable 6.5 seconds.

There is a large raked front window that provides excellent visibility and gives almost a green house effect for the occupants. There is, however, no sunroof option. The Bolt was designed to accommodate roof racks and Chevrolet demonstrated this for us with one Bolt toting surfboards.

Driving style in the Bolt can be tailored to suit. Put the Bolt’s transmission in drive and it functions exactly as a petrol-powered automatic, when you lift off the pedal, it coasts. If the car is at a stop and you lift off the brake, the Bolt creeps forward. For those of us who love one-pedal driving bump the shifter down again and bingo, typical EV driving.

One pedal driving is the most efficient way to drive an EV because the action of lifting off the gas pedal slows the car down by recharging the battery instead of using the brakes. A cool feature of the Bolt is a handbrake feature on the left side of the steering wheel at the 9 o’clock position.

If you need to slow the car will trigger a more aggressive regen. This “Regen on Demand” – as Chevrolet calls it – can be used in either regular driving mode or one pedal mode.

Our drive started out in Palo Alto, California at a brisk 38F/3C. The very first thing I did was turn on the heated seats and heated steering wheel in our Kinetic Blue Bolt while we were ciphering our route book. I also turned on the Bolt’s “toaster” style heater to warm the cabin. Our early morning route took us on some very tight switch backs up and down the Santa Cruz Mountains headed to the big wave surfer’s paradise of Half Moon Bay.

TEST DRIVE: Tesla Model 3 versus BMW i3 electric car

The low center of gravity and instant torque of an electric motor made an enjoyable drive. Coming down the mountain we used regen quite a bit and even gained some of our range back. Acceleration is strong but not overwhelming. The surprising part for me on the highway was just how composed the Bolt is at highway speeds. We had no trouble keeping up with the flow of traffic.

The driver has an 8” configurable display which in addition to being a speedometer, shows charge remaining in miles, and electrical consumption in miles per kWh. The center console has a large 10.2” display which is also configurable for entertainment, phone integration and navigation.

Chevrolet chose to allow the Apple CarPlay or Android Auto on your own phone to provide the navigation to the car. The only downside to this is that your phone must be physically tethered to the car via a USB/Lightning connection. The Bolt can also provide a Wifi hotspot for up to seven devices with its 4G connection. You do have to opt for a data plan for the car after the 3 months, 3GB data expire.

Best Plug-in Hybrid and Electric Sports Cars

Once the back seats are laid flat, the cargo capacity of the Bolt goes from 56.6 cubit feet, up to 94.4. In order to maximize the opening to haul big stuff the rear lights are housed in on the rear hatch. This meant that designers had to include redundant brake lights in the rear bumper in case the owner is hauling something that won’t allow the rear lift gate to be closed.

Chevrolet designers also included an ingenious rear view camera mirror incase you fill your cargo hold all the way up obstructing a traditional rear view mirror. To activate, just flip the switch on the mirror and the image on the mirror now comes from a camera mounted in the rear tailgate.

I found the resolution very good, but noted that 3 dimensional depth perception was 2D during the camera rear view mode. In case you think this digital rear view camera would get messed up in foul weather, the lens is sprayed with wiper fluid every time the Bolt’s windshield washers are activated.

As far as options go, the Bolt we drove was a Premiere, with nearly every option ticked. It had a Bose 7 Speaker system with subwoofer. There were a host of driver aids including blind spot detectors, lane keep assist, front pedestrian braking and rear park assist.

Surround Vision uses four cameras to create a Birds Eye View of the Bolt which is helpful in really tight parking spots. Though there are LED daylight running lamps, the headlights are Xenon. The rear brake lights on the lift gate are all LED. Heated seats aren’t just limited to front passengers, they are also found in the rear.

When it comes time to charge the Bolt, 25 miles of range can be added per hour using a 32 amp, 220v J1772 charger. DC Fast Charging Capability is a $750 option and can add 90 miles of range in 30 minutes depending on the state of your battery. This DC option is becoming more common place and is extremely helpful when trying to go on a long distance trip.

The Bolt has an excellent app to communicate with the car while you are away to check the state of the charge, start charging or even pre-condition the cabin before your journey.

My only criticisms of the Bolt are born from the thousands of miles I’ve driven other EVs. I really missed the ability to option Active Cruise Control. In stop and go traffic in an electric vehicle, I find it invaluable. Since it was a ground up new car, I was hopeful it too would be able to do software updates over the air, but the Bolt will instead require trips to the dealer.

Lastly, I think DC charging should be standard as 32 Amp charging will take about 9 hours to recharge a fully depleted battery and doesn’t lend itself well to road trips. Fortunately the DC Charging is optional and Chevrolet tells me roughly 75 percent of the Bolts being shipped right now have it spec’d.

In our drive of about 100 miles, we averaged 3.8 miles/kWh which would be about 210-220 miles of range. We didn’t drive the Bolt in ideal EV conditions. The weather during our drive was cold starting out. On the interstate, we ran 75 mph+ and we even trekked up through the mountains.

We drove the Bolt just as you would a petrol powered car. We kept up with traffic, felt zero range anxiety and despite all that had incredible range left.

In the Bolt, Chevrolet has managed to make not only a great EV, but a great car. With its range and practicality, it should help bring wider adoption of EVs. The right price combined with great range, the Bolt EV is already a winner.
