The electric SUV with a pony car’s name has been in production for over a year at the Cuautitlán Assembly in Cuautitlán Izcalli, Mexico from where it’s shipped all over the world. Since mid-October 2021, the Ford Mustang Mach-E is also being put together in China at the Chongqing plant. The Blue Oval has now kicked off customer deliveries of the locally produced EV in the People’s Republic.

The first vehicle was delivered on December 26 and Ford’s Chinese division is selling the Mustang Mach-E through its 25 direct-to-customer stores established in the country’s most important metropolitan regions. The very first person to take delivery of the hotly anticipated zero-emissions SUV is ad executive Jin Zhang pictured above on the left, with Ford China BEV Division’s general manager Mark Kaufman handing him the keys.

The sporty electric SUV is available in the world’s most populous country in several trim levels: RWD (long range), RWD Premium (long range), RWD (standard range), and GT First Edition. Those who were quick enough to buy one of the first cars will receive an upgraded car and battery warranty, not to mention hassle-free roadside assistance and a referral bonus.

Should charging the vehicle less often be your top priority, the RWD Long Range is the one to buy as it has been rated at 385 miles (619 kilometers) of range based on the China light-duty vehicle test cycle (CLTC). If a faster electric SUV is more to your liking, then the GT is the most suitable version courtesy of a combined output of 481 horsepower (359 kilowatts) and 860 Newton-meters (634 pound-feet) of torque. The electric, all-wheel-drive punch helps the Mustang Mach-E hit 62 mph (100 km/h) in only 3.65 seconds.

The model’s launch in China comes at the right time since more and more people are ditching their cars powered by internal combustion engines to adopt EVs. The fact it’s assembled locally also helps cut delivery times and further bolster the Mustang Mach-E’s popularity as it battles the Volkswagen ID.4 X and ID.4 Crozz also assembled in the country.

At $67,995 for the 2022 model year, the GT Performance Edition is the most expensive of all Ford Mustang Mach-E versions. It shares the dual electric motors with the standard $61,995 GT model, making an identical 480 horsepower. However, the sportier derivate boasts an increased maximum torque from the GT’s 600 pound-feet (814 Newton-meters) to 634 lb-ft (860 Nm). The extra oomph shaves off three-tenths of a second from the sprint to 60 mph, which takes only three and a half seconds.

As the model’s name indicates, it has been tailored to maximum performance rather than efficiency. Consequently, EPA has rated the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT Performance Edition at only 260 miles of range, a far cry from the thrifty California Route 1 with its 305-mile range. However, Edmunds has discovered you can squeeze more range out of the 88-kWh battery as they were able to drive it for 272 miles before running out of juice.

Testing the electric crossover on their standardized route, Edmunds beat EPA’s estimate by 12 miles, which isn’t necessarily something to write home about, but every extra mile counts. It’s especially true for the GT Performance Edition, which doesn’t excel in this regard, partially because it’s the heavier dual-motor version with all-wheel drive and a sport-tuned adaptive suspension. In addition, the flagship Mustang Mach-E gets Pirelli summer performance tires for extra grip at the expense of efficiency.

Speaking of weight, Edmunds says their test vehicle tipped the scales at a hefty 4,997 pounds (2,266 kilograms). For the sake of comparison, it was 471 pounds (214 kilograms) heavier than the rear-wheel-drive California Route 1 Edition they previously tested, equipped with the same 88-kWh battery. They also had an AWD Extended Range and that one was still 175 pounds (79 kilograms) lighter than the GT Performance Edition.

It’s not the first time when Edmunds beats an EPA estimate as the California Route 1 Edition covered 304 miles or 34 miles more than the official rating. In addition, the Mercedes EQS in the 450+ specification with its 108-kWh battery did 422 miles on a single charge, representing a massive increase of 72 miles compared to EPA’s number.

As a final note, it’s worth mentioning the 2022MY Mustang Mach-E has a better 91-kWh battery instead of the previous 88-kWh pack. That should translate into a slightly higher range. In the case of the rear-wheel-drive California Route 1 Edition, it can now cover an EPA-estimated 314 miles or an extra 9 miles more than the equivalent 2021MY.

Ford has decided to postpone the launch of electric versions for the Explorer and Lincoln Aviator by 18 months and relocate production to prioritize the Mustang Mach-E. It allows the Blue Oval to boost the output of the zero-emissions SUV with the pony car’s name to 200,000 units annually in 2023. That will represent a 300% increase compared to 2021.

That’s the good news if you plan on buying the Mustang Mach-E and are worried about how long it would take to get the vehicle built in Mexico at the Cuautitlán factory. However, the bad news is the 2022 model year is coming with a price hike for some trim levels and packages. The folks over at Mach E Forum managed to get a hold of a dealer bulletin sent by Ford, informing sales representatives about several price hikes.

For example, the entry-level Select trim is going to set you back an extra $1,000 while the California Route 1 has received a similar price bump. In the case of the latter, the premium is justifiable to some extent as EPA has rated the model at 314 miles or an additional nine miles compared to the previous model year. In addition, the California Route 1 has standard heated front seats and steering wheel, while optional AWD is new for 2022.

Should you be interested in getting behind the wheel of a Mustang Mach-E in the Premium specification, that one too is now $1,000 more expensive than before. As for the sporty GT trim pictured here, Ford is adding $2,000 to its price tag. Not only that, but the GT Performance Package costs an extra $1,000, and the same thing can be said about the Extended Range Battery.

It means the 2022 Mustang Mach-E is now up to $3,000 more expensive than before taking into consideration the GT costs an extra $2,000 and is available with either of the two packages for an additional $1,000 compared to the 2021MY. You do get a black painted roof as standard on the GT (and the GT Performance Edition), so there’s that.

Other changes brought by the model year change include the addition of Iced Blue Silver Metallic to the color palette, while the existing Cyber Orange and Grabber Blue can now be ordered with any of the available trim levels rather than being limited to certain versions.

As it stands, the entry-level Select costs $43,895 and has an estimated delivery time of more than 20 weeks. Up next is the Premium at $49,100 and due to be delivered in 28+ weeks, The aforementioned California Route 1 will set you back $52,775 and Ford will deliver it in 20+ weeks. It’s going to be a long wait for the most expensive of the bunch as the GT retails from $61,995 and the order will be fulfilled in more than 28 weeks.

All prices exclude the $7,500 federal tax credit. Ford has updated the configurator for the 2022 Mustang Mach-E, which you can access here.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E GT is currently the sportiest iteration of the electric SUV you can buy, but the Blue Oval has already engineered a far more extreme version. Only a prototype, the Mustang Mach-E 1400 gets its name from the massive power delivered by no fewer than seven electric motors. Yes, seven. It boasts 1,400 horsepower, and as Vaughn Gittin Jr discovered, the zero-emissions SUV with a pony car name is an absolute joy to drive and hoon.

In an excellent 12-minute video released by Ford Performance, the professional drifter not only gets to have fun with the one-off Mustang Mach-E, but also discover the wonderful scenery provided by the Faroe Islands. The one-off prototype developed in collaboration with RTR takes the abuse effortlessly while Vaughn Gittin Jr tests the limits of the high-performance electric SUV.

As a refresher, the “1400” version was developed over the course of 10,000 hours to show electric vehicles can be truly exciting, even when they take the shape of an SUV. With five extra electric motors than the range-topping GT road version and a 56.8-kWh battery with nickel manganese cobalt pouch cells, this is far from being an ordinary Mustang Mach-E.

It seems highly unlikely a production version will arrive anytime soon given the complexity of the powertrain and how much this wild derivative would end up costing. Nevertheless, it’s exciting to see what engineers can do when they have complete freedom to build such a bonkers EV. Instead of a bulky SUV, we’re already imagining a smaller, lightweight sports car that would likely go on to break all track records.

Meanwhile, the road-going Mustang Mach-E was recently updated for the 2022 model year by getting a battery upgrade with an increased usable capacity. The smaller pack was uprated from 68 kWh to 70 kWh while the larger one now has 91 kWh instead of the previous 88 kWh. In both cases, that should translate into slightly more range.

The European New Car Assessment Programme published today the results from its latest crash tests, which included two EVs – the Ford Mustang Mach-E and the Hyundai Ioniq 5. The electric crossover with a pony car’s name managed to earn the full five-star rating whereas the gasoline-fueled sports car only got three when it was tested back in 2017. Needless to say, the two models have nothing in common except for the name and some design traits.

The Mustang Mach-E tested by Euro NCAP was a left-hand-drive example in the Titanium trim level and it achieved the following scores: 92% for adult occupant, 86% for child occupant, 69% for vulnerable road users, and 82% for safety assist. The organization praised the zero-emissions SUV for its deployable hood, center airbag, and a raft of advanced driver assistance systems.

As far as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is concerned, it also grabbed all five stars from Euro NCAP and posted the following scores: 88% for adult occupant, 86% for child occupant, 63% for vulnerable road users, and 88% for safety assist. It too has a central airbag, but it lacks the Mach-E’s active hood. In addition, the all-electric SUV from the Blue Oval features a side pelvis airbag.

It is also worth noting the South Korean electric SUV did not have car-to-car autonomous emergency braking (AEB), but that’s only because the particular car Euro NCAP tested, an Ioniq 5 GL in left-hand drive, lacked this feature. It’s optionally available when you order the Ioniq 5.

In case you haven’t heard, Euro NCAP is now complemented by Green NCAP, which is described as an “independent initiative which promotes the development of cars which are clean.” The reason why we are mentioning it is that the Ford Mustang Mach-E also grabbed five stars in that assessment. We are expecting the same result for the Hyundai Ioniq 5 since both have zero emissions.

If you’ve resisted the temptation to buy the Ford Mustang Mach-E in its first model year, you’ve made the right move as the 2022MY brings some advantages. We’ve already learned that both battery packs have received an increased capacity for slightly more range, and now CarsDirect says the electric SUV is eligible for an important discount.

Incentive bulletins sent to Ford dealers reveal the Mustang Mach-E is available with a significant rebate in some parts of the United States. The $2,500 price cut is applicable to all versions of the zero-emissions SUV, which is rather surprising considering customer demand is currently through the roof. The regular versions of the model are facing a minimum waiting time of 20 weeks while those looking to get behind the wheel of the sporty GT have to patiently wait for at least 28 weeks.

However, there is one major caveat. Cars Direct reports the discount is only applicable if you’re ordering from California and a few other regions known for promoting EVs over cars equipped with internal combustion engines. Specifically, the $2,500 discount is only available in the following areas: New York, Boston, Denver, Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and a few more. Those who live elsewhere and are eager to take delivery of the electric SUV should know the incentive drops to only $1,000.

But wait, there’s one more downside to this deal. The incentive in question is officially known as the Ford Options Bonus Cash and can be obtained only if you’re financing the 2022 Mustang Mach-E via Ford Credit. As a refresher, those leasing can’t take advantage of the federal tax credit for the time being as the Blue Oval is not passing along the maximum of $7,500 to consumers. Some other automakers do, such as Volvo with its XC40 Recharge offered with a lease bonus that includes the full value of the tax credit.

Ford has been making the Mustang Mach-E at its factory in Mexico for over a year but it would be a logistical nightmare to ship the electric SUV all the way to China. For this reason, the Blue Oval has decided to localize production in the People’s Republic at its Chongqing plant where assembly has officially started. The first vehicles will be delivered to customers before the end of the year.

The CN-spec Mustang Mach-E is available in RWD (long range), RWD Premium (long range), RWD (standard range), and GT First Edition specifications. Early adopters are invited to sign their names on the dotted line as Ford is now taking orders, and those who act fast and purchase the zero-emissions SUV before December 31, 2021, will take advantage of several benefits: referral bonus, a retail finance and replacement plan, hassle-free roadside assistance, and most importantly – better vehicle and battery system warranty.

As it’s the case with the global model, the RWD Long Range model is the one you’ll want for extended journeys. Based on the local China light-duty vehicle test cycle (CLTC), the most efficient Mustang Mach-E has been rated at 619 kilometers (385 miles) of range. If maximum performance is what you’re after, the GT has 481 horsepower (359 kilowatts) and 860 Newton-meters (634 pound-feet) of torque, enough for a 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) run in 3.65 seconds.

Meanwhile, Ford is rolling out the 2022MY Mustang Mach-E in the United States with a series of changes, the chief of which is the larger battery capacity. The base pack now has a usable capacity of 70 kWh (from 68 kWh) while the extended range pack now offers 91 kWh (from 88 kW). EPA won’t test the electric SUV with the revised battery, but Ford says the new model year will deliver a slightly improved range.

From now on, the California Route 1 trim level will be offered with optional all-wheel drive while the GT will get a standard black roof. A heated steering wheel and heated front seats are now part of the standard equipment across the range, and there are some color changes as Iconic Silver is replacing Iced Blue Silver Metallic and Carbonized Grey is deleted. Grabber Blue and Cyber Orange – two previously GT-only hues – are now available for the other Mustang Mach-E versions.

Ford has introduced the 2022 Mustang Mach-E with a series of important changes, chief of which is the increased battery capacity. The base pack sees its usable capacity increase from the previous 68 kWh to 70 kWh while the extended range pack has been bumped from 88 kWh to 91 kWh. Although the Blue Oval says EPA will not retest the electric SUV with the upgraded batteries, the increased capacity should unlock a few extra miles of range.

As a refresher, the 2021 Mustang Mach-E offered from 211 to 305 miles of range between charges, and these numbers should increase by a few miles as a result of the slightly higher usable battery capacity. It remains to be seen whether this is purely a hardware improvement or Ford can simply push an over-the-air software update for existing vehicles to increase range.

In other news, the 2022 Mustang Mach-E in the California Route 1 trim level – the one with the highest possible range – can now be optioned with all-wheel drive for the first time. In addition, this specification of the electric ‘Stang has a more generous list of standard equipment, which now includes a heated steering wheel as well as heated front seats. As far as the flagship GT is concerned, the tweaks are limited to a black roof offered as standard rather than being a $385 option for the 2021MY.

The color palette has also been refreshed for 2022, with Carbonized Grey being removed from the range while Iced Blue Silver Metallic will be replacing Iconic Silver. Exclusively offered on the GT trim level until now, Cyber Orange and Grabber Blue can now be had for other versions as well. In addition, Ford is launching an Ice White Edition with the model year change.

When it comes to pricing, the entry-level model costs the same as before, $43,995. Ford is increasing the Premium’s starting price to $49,200 – an increase of $500 – and the California Route 1’s sticker to $51,875 – up by $375. And for some good news, the all-wheel-drive-only Mustang Mach-E GT is now significantly cheaper than before as Ford is shaving off $1,005, meaning it kicks off from $59,995. If you want AWD on a lesser trim level, you’ll have to pay an extra $2,700.

Ford is already taking orders for the updated Mustang Mach-E and will start customer deliveries in February, but only for the Select and California Route 1. If you want the Premium or the GT, you’ll have to patiently wait until April.

The microchip shortage has given Ford a lot of headaches in terms of vehicle production, forcing the Blue Oval to push back the delivery of many customer cars. The Mustang Mach-E is on that list as there’s a backlog of orders for the 2021MY the Dearborn-based marque won’t be able to clear before the switch to the upcoming 2022 model year.

The silver lining for those willing to patiently wait for the 2022 Mustang Mach-E rather than cancel their orders is that Ford will ease their wait by handing out a $750 discount. Cars Direct managed to get a hold of a letter sent to dealers, informing them about incentives applicable on a variety of 2022MY vehicles, including the electric SUV.

The minor price cut is available regardless if you are buying or leasing, but it’s actually the smallest when compared to discounts available for other Ford models. For example, the incentive can be as high as $3,500 if you’re purchasing an F-150 fullsize pickup truck outright, while the biggest lease discount is $2,250 for the Explorer SUV.

While unfulfilled 2021 Mustang Mach-E orders will be automatically converted to 2022MY vehicles, there is one problem. Ford has yet to release full specifications for the new model year, so people waiting in line to get the zero-emissions SUV don’t know for sure what vehicle they will be getting. For what it’s worth, the automaker says it “will convert orders to the same specification, or the closest possible specification.”

Those not satisfied with the long waiting time can get a pre-built Mustang Mach-E for a $2,000 discount, provided they’re still able to find out sitting on dealer lots. Alternatively, the 2022MY is said to bring slightly more range, quicker charging, and could offer a longer list of standard equipment, but it’s better to wait for an official announcement from Ford.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E went on sale towards the end of last year and it’s already facing a second recall. After calling into the shop a small number of electric SUVs in March because of defective subframe bolts, the Blue Oval has now issued a more significant recall that affects no fewer than 38,714 units. The problems stem from improperly bonded sunroofs and windshields, which in a worst-case scenario, could simply detach from the vehicle.

Of the Mustang Mach-Es recalled, Ford says only 27,318 units have problems with the sunroof, but all of them need a windshield replacement. Thankfully, the company is not aware of any incidents or injuries that might have occurred caused by the improperly bonded sunroof and/or windshield. A company spokesperson has told Automotive News the problematic vehicles were all assembled between February 24 and June 18 and that Ford dealers will replace the windshield and sunroof, free of charge.

The recall reinforces the opinion that many people have about avoiding the first model year of a vehicle, especially if the car in question is an all-new model as is the case with the Mustang Mach-E. It is a bit embarrassing for such a high-profile to face a fairly large recall, as while the number itself is not huge, it’s worth mentioning the electric SUV has been in series production for less than a year.

Seeing the glass half full, Ford has vowed to make the Mustang Mach-E better with time, promising over-the-air updates that will bring quicker charging and better range. We’re hoping build qualities will also be addressed, especially since the much-hyped Bronco off-road SUV also has some issues with its roof.

Meanwhile, Ford is working on another bespoke EV that will ride on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform. It’s due to hit the market in 2023 and will be assembled at the firm’s Cologne plant in Germany. Rumor has it the EV will take the shape of a crossover, presumably smaller and cheaper than the Mustang Mach-E.
