Even though Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has been teasing the ID. Buzz relentlessly, YouTuber Bjørn Nyland is providing us with our best look yet at the electric van. Still carrying the colorful camouflage, the EV revival of the Microbus was spotted at a fast-charging station in Norway parked between a Tesla Model S and a Porsche Taycan.

Interestingly, the 2023 VW ID. Buzz appears to be more compact than we originally believed since the video gives us the impression it’s narrower and shorter than the red Tesla. It should still be quite spacious thanks to a boxy shape with short overhangs and a tall roofline. The prototype depicts a passenger model, but a commercial derivative is in the pipeline, with a California camper to follow from 2025.

VW has been coy on details, but we do know the ID. Buzz will borrow the MEB platform that has already underpinned the ID.3 hatchback along with the ID.4, ID.5, and the ID.6 SUVs. Confirmed to go on sale later this year in Europe and from 2023 in the United States, the electric people-mover is going to be sold with a couple of drivetrains and battery packages.

Logic tells us buyers will get to pick from rear- and all-wheel drive, with a single- and dual-motor setup. The biggest battery currently offered by VW for its ID-badged models has a total capacity of 82 kWh, which translates to a useable capacity of 77 kWh. It would make sense for the ID. Buzz to get it as well, perhaps an even bigger pack seeing as how it will be able to carry more people than the existing ID. models.

Touted as being VW’s most emotional EV, the much-hyped ID. Buzz will officially break cover on March 9. When the disguise will drop, it won’t be as interesting as the namesake concept from January 2017, but we’re still hoping for quite a few retro touches as a nod to its ancestor.

2022 will mark the return of an icon as Volkswagen is finally bringing back the Microbus. However, the van is going to eschew the combustion engines of the past to embrace the inevitable EV era. It’s been teased relentlessly since the concept premiered four years ago. Even so, we still have to wait some more. Premiering March 9, the zero-emission people mover is back in a 17-second preview.

The teaser video on Twitter gives us an up-close look at the ID. Buzz, stubbornly carrying the colorful camo. VW claims the electric family hauler is going to have an “aerodynamic shape,” which is a surprising statement given the boxy silhouette. The closed-off wheel design does hint at a sleek design to maximize efficiency for greater range.

As with previous teasers, the latest preview depicts the passenger version. VW has confirmed there will be a cargo model, plus a camper. The latter will be called California and won’t arrive before 2025. An autonomous derivative is also in the offing, plus different wheelbase configurations for the passenger model.

With the ID. Buzz, VW aims to “take eMobility game to a whole new level.” The new arrival will complement the T7 Multivan plug-in hybrid launched last year. It should ride on the same MEB platform as the ID.3 hatchback. The ID.4, ID.5, and ID.6 SUVs use the same dedicated underpinnings. Cheaper ones could make do with a RWD setup while an AWD, dual-motor flagship is planned.

VW Commercial Vehicles will take care of production beginning later this year by making the ID. Buzz at the Hanover plant in Germany. Europe will be the first to get the model in 2022, with the US having to wait until next year. The US-spec ID. Buzz will be sold exclusively in the passenger variant with the longer wheelbase, or so we’ve heard.

To say Volkswagen has extensively teased the ID. Buzz would be quite the understatement, and yet here we are, sharing another official preview of the Microbus’ revival. The electric people-mover will finally break cover on March 9, so there’s plenty of time left for the peeps from Wolfsburg to generate more buzz (pun intended) around the EV.

In a YouTube Shorts video, the 2023 ID. Buzz still stubbornly carries the colorful livery on its boxy body. That said, we can see the headlight design in full, complete with the wide LED light bar bisected by the VW logo. Its front bumper design also caught our attention due to its numerous honeycomb elements and a fairly large center-mounted radar sensor for the driver assistance systems.

Other details that make a brief appearance in the short clip include the puddle lights and illuminated door handles, while the turn signals can also be seen for a split second. Logic tells us VW will initially introduce the passenger version before coming out with the cargo derivative that won’t come to the United States.

It sadly won’t look as sleek as the namesake concept from January 2017, but that’s to be expected since production models rarely match the interesting designs of the showcars before them. We are curious to find out what sort of drag coefficient the ID. Buzz will have given its tall roof and angular shape that will certainly have a negative impact on aerodynamic efficiency. It will have aero-optimized alloy wheels, and those should help by unlocking a few extra miles of range.

To be built in Hannover by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, the electric van is set to enter production later this year and will initially go on sale in Europe before the end of 2022. It will share the MEB platform with the ID.3 through ID.6 models and should come with a rear-wheel-drive layout and a single motor for the base version. More expensive trim levels will add a front electric motor to enable AWD and up the power ante from around 200 to 300 hp in the same vein as the ID.5 GTX.

In the long run, a fully autonomous variant will arrive in 2025 for ride-hailing services.

Folks, it’s finally happening. Four years have passed since Volkswagen introduced the ID. Buzz concept and we now have a much-expected reveal date. Company head honcho Herbert Diess took to Twitter to announce the road-going electric van will break cover on 03/09/22. Unless you’re from the United States, the rest of the world would read this date as September 3, 2022.

However, that’s not actually the case. Even though the 63-year-old executive was born in West Germany and has Austrian nationality, he inexplicably decided to use the US date format where the month comes first and then the day of the month. Maybe the post on Twitter was published by someone residing in the US or Diess simply had a social media faux pas. What matters the most is the production-ready ID. Buzz will break cover on March 9, 2022.

Confusing date format aside, the Buzz will be offered in both passenger and cargo configurations in Europe from later this year. North America will only get the people-oriented model with a long wheelbase. As with all the other ID-badged Volkswagen models before it, the new EV will ride on the MEB platform and should be offered with standard rear-wheel drive. More expensive ones will have a front-mounted electric motor as well to enable AWD.

As previously reported, the zero-emission Microbus will be assembled in Hannover, Germany in two wheelbase lengths for the passenger model. If the ID.5 GTX is any indication, the top-spec model should offer somewhere in the region of 300 horsepower. A camper version dubbed California has already been confirmed, much like a ride-hailing variant.

With the Buzz premiering on March 9, chances are VW is organizing a dedicated event for its newest EV considering the Geneva Motor Show won’t take place this year. Sales on the Old Continent should kick off in the latter half of 2021.

When Volkswagen introduced the ID.4 GTX at the end of April, the event dedicated to the high-performance electric SUV also contained a teaser for the ID.5. The latter was officially unveiled today together with the ID.5 GTX, but as with the previous world premiere, it too contained a preview of a future EV from Wolfsburg.

We’re talking about the long-awaited production version of the ID. Buzz, which was originally unveiled as a concept car nearly five years ago. Yes, VW took the wraps off the concept way back in January 2017 at the Detroit Auto Show. Fast forward to today, the German automaker promises it will “talk about [the road-going model] at the beginning of next year.” Hopefully, that means we are only a couple of months away from seeing the production-ready electric van.

Click play below and the video will take you straight to the moment when VW provides a glimpse of the final ID. Buzz coming in 2022.

You can easily tell it’s the version we will be seeing in showrooms soon by the regular door handles as well as traditional side mirrors whereas the concept had cameras. It differs from the showcar by featuring an LED light bar in the same vein as other recent VW, electric or not. In addition, the headlights are larger than those of the concept before it while the bumper has lost the honeycomb-shaped LED elements.

As a reminder, the ID. Buzz will initially arrive in Europe next year – likely with two wheelbase options –before going on sale in the United States only in the stretched configuration in 2023. The modern take on the Microbus is said to receive a six-passenger interior layout with individual rear seats on the Old Continent while the US-spec model is reportedly getting two seats facing forward and another two facing rearward.

2017 VW ID Buzz concept

Needless to say, VW Commercial Vehicles is also developing a cargo version for commercial purposes and is believed to mainly target parcel delivery companies. The production-ready ID. Buzz will be assembled in Hannover and logic tells us it will come in rear- and all-wheel-drive configurations with single and dual electric motors, respectively. The beefier version could have nearly 300 horsepower as is the case with the AWD-equipped ID.4 GTX and ID.5 GTX.

An autonomous version is earmarked for a 2025 release, and it is already part of a pilot program in Hamburg for autonomous ride-pooling services. The same city will be the first location where the driverless variant will be deployed in 2025, with other important cities in Europe and the United States to follow.
