Some people would’ve expected Porsche to dip its toes into the EV market with a crossover, but the Zuffenhausen brand prioritized the Taycan sedan. Then the Cross Turismo / Sport Turismo wagons followed, and it won’t be until 2023 when the all-electric Macan will break cover. Better late than never, the company’s first model to ride on the PPE platform has been spied near the Arctic Circle.

While it looks more of the same at a first glance, a closer inspection shows the prototype has split headlights. The low/high beam is positioned lower on the front bumper while those four-point LEDs mounted above serve as the daytime running lights. It will be a similar story with its sister model as the Audi Q6 E-Tron arriving first will also have separate lighting clusters at the front.

Getting back to the Macan EV at hand, it appears to be carrying most of the production body panels. It goes without saying the dual exhaust tips at the back are fake since there’s no combustion engine. Slimmer LED headlights are peeking through the camouflage and we believe the overhangs will be shorter compared to the gasoline-fueled crossover.

It would seem Porsche is going for a more coupe-inspired look by giving the electric Macan a sloping roofline that could eat in rear headroom and cargo capacity. However, riding on a bespoke EV platform should pay dividends in terms of packaging to free up more room inside the cabin. An active rear spoiler is planned, as is rear-wheel steering.

More advanced than the MEB platform, PPE will come along with fast-charging at up to 350 kilowatts and support for air suspension. The VW Group has previously announced EVs on this architecture will receive torque vectoring and the more expensive ones will add a front electric motor to enable all-wheel drive.

PPE will debut with the Audi Q6 E-Tron and Porsche Macan EV, but it’ll also be compatible with bigger SUVs as well as wagons and liftbacks.

Aside from announcing the hybrid 911 will be revealed soon, Porsche Italia CEO Pietro Innocenti has told local media the next-generation Macan will break cover in late 2023. To be offered exclusively with an electric powertrain, the crossover will be sold for a few months alongside the current model. After that, the gasoline-fueled vehicle will be discontinued, thus leaving the Macan EV as the sole offering.

He didn’t go into any specifics about the zero-emissions crossover, but there are reports it could switch to a different name. Doing so would avoid a potential confusion between the conventionally powered and purely electric versions. Porsche teased the next-gen models way back in May 2021, even though the world premiere is still far away.

It will be the first model from the Zuffenhausen brand to ride on the Premium Platform Electric, which Porsche has been developing for several years together with Audi. The latter will get its own electric crossover as the Q6 E-Tron is scheduled to debut by the end of this year. PPE is seen as a more sophisticated version of the VW Group’s MEB architecture by supporting more advanced technologies.

Specifically, PPE-based electric vehicles will come with rear-wheel steering and adaptive air suspension, not to mention torque vectoring and an 800-volt platform for fast-charging at up to 350 kW. More affordable models will stick to a rear-mounted electric motor while the more expensive ones will add a second motor at the front for extra power and AWD.

There’s no word about the size of the battery, but we do know even the base model will have more than the 227 miles of EPA-certified range offered by the Taycan 4S.

Porsche has set a clear goal for the Macan EV as it wants the electric crossover to be “the sportiest model in its segment.” To get there, prototypes will cover around three million kilometers in a variety of environments before production commences by the end of 2023.

Porsche has made it abundantly clear the Macan crossover will be embracing electrification with its next generation. Coming out in 2023 after next year’s mechanically related Audi Q6 E-Tron, the sporty crossover from Zuffenhausen will completely ditch the internal combustion engine for its second generation. However, the existing model with its gasoline powertrains will stick around for a while.

That poses an issue in terms of naming as it wouldn’t be such a great idea to have two completely different Macan models, one with ICE and another with EV propulsion. Porsche is worried there could be some confusion among customers, hence why it is believed the zero-emissions variant will adopt an entirely different moniker. That would create a clear distinction between the two crossovers while the two will peacefully coexist for a number of years before the gasoline-fueled Macan will be dropped.

Motor Trend has it on good authority the all-electric “to avoid potential customer confusion caused by having different vehicles with the same moniker occupying showrooms.” Porsche has hinted about coming out with an electric version of the Panamera to slot above the Taycan, and if that happens, logic tells us it too will bear a different name to separate the EV version from the ICE model.

Getting back to the completely silent Macan, it will ride on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) developed by Porsche and Audi. It will support fast-charging at up to 350 kW thanks to 800-volt technology and will use unspecified batteries with more juice than the 227-mile range offered by the Taycan.

The base version is said to make do with a single electric motor mounted at the rear while upper-spec Macan EVs will add a front motor to enable an all-wheel-drive layout. In addition, Motor Trend reports there could even be a tri-motor flagship version – a setup that has already been implemented in VW Group products as the Audi E-Tron S has three motors.

The Porsche Macan EV (or whatever its name will be) is going to arrive in the United States for the 2024 model year, after its Q6 E-Tron sibling, although Audi has yet to confirm whether its PPE-based SUV will be offered in North America.

Teaser campaigns traditionally used to last only a couple of weeks or maybe a month or so, but automakers are now stretching them out to several months. Not only that, but every now and then, a car manufacturer provides an early look at an all-new model that won’t be coming out in the next 12 months. Case in point, Porsche is teasing a Macan EV that will not hit the market until 2023.

Testing is well underway both in the virtual and real world as Porsche is combining digital prototypes with physical vehicles to speed up development. No fewer than 20 prototypes have been developed in the virtual world and are being used in various simulated environments to perfect aerodynamics, acoustics, operation, and energy management.

The Macan EV is still very much a work-in-progress vehicle as the design hasn’t been finalized yet. Improvements are being made based on the findings to optimize airflow and improve efficiency to achieve a greater range between two charges. Actual prototypes of the all-electric crossover have been built either by hand or using special tools using key data obtained during simulations.

Porsche estimates the Macan will cover as much as three million kilometers in various conditions all over the world by the time it’s ready to enter series production in 2023. The main goal is to develop “the sportiest model in the segment” and therefore distance itself from the mechanically related Audi Q6 E-Tron due next year.

Both models will be underpinned by the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) currently being developed by Porsche and Audi. The Macan EV will support 800-volt architecture much like the Taycan, enabling fast-charging capabilities. It’s going to have a longer range than the company’s first EV, with some publications estimating it will cover around 250 miles based on the EPA test cycle.

The Macan without a combustion engine won’t spell the end of the traditional gasoline-fueled version. As a matter of fact, the ICE-powered crossover will get a direct successor later this year and will be sold alongside the EV version once that will be out sometime in 2023.

It was more than two years ago when Porsche announced plans to develop the next-generation Macan strictly as an electric vehicle. We haven’t heard much about the EV crossover since then, but thankfully, the Zuffenhausen brand recently shared more details during a roundtable interview with journalists. The most important news to come out from the discussions is about range.

Porsche says the Macan EV will offer a “significantly” longer range compared to the Taycan sedan, which currently offers 227 miles between charges based on EPA testing for the 4S version. According to Motor Trend’s estimations, the electric crossover will be able to travel for about 250 miles before running out of battery juice.

Considering both the Tesla Model Y and Ford Mustang Mach-E offer some versions that exceed 300 miles of range, we’re certain Porsche wants to remain highly competitive and is targeting a generous range for its Macan EV. The new model will ride on the same PPE platform as the Audi Q6 E-Tron, which should have largely the same technical specifications.

Porsche executive board member Michael Steiner told Motor Trend the US-spec Taycan EV is likely going to be offered with one battery option for a longer range whereas the European model will also get a smaller pack for a cheaper entry-level trim. Unconfirmed for now, but there’s a good chance the engineers are developing the new crossover with single- and dual-motor versions for two- and all-wheel-drive configurations, respectively.

Much like the Taycan, the new Macan sans combustion engine will feature an 800-volt electrical architecture, meaning owners will be able to charge the crossover at up to 270 kilowatts. Steiner also said the EV model will look significantly different than the gasoline-fueled version, which will be sold alongside its eco-friendly counterpart.

The electric Macan is scheduled to arrive in North America sometime in 2023 as a 2024MY, although we might see it in Europe sooner. Meanwhile, the updated gas-fueled crossover is programmed to debut before the end of 2021.
