The Volkswagen ID Buzz’s long road to reveal has been paved with numerous teasers, but thankfully, the world premiere is right around the corner. The electric van will finally debut on March 9 in production guise when it will lose this colorful camouflage to fully show its final boxy body. Meanwhile, VW has found time to release yet another preview, showing the modern-day Microbus on a tour in Europe.

A follow-up to the namesake concept from four years ago, the production-ready VW ID Buzz is coming as yet another electric vehicle based on the MEB platform. It’s currently undergoing final testing prior to its debut next Wednesday both as a passenger and commercial van. Initially, it will be available with the 82-kWh battery (77 kWh net capacity), but we’ve heard a bigger pack is set to arrive further down the line.

Upon launch, the 2023 ID Buzz will be sold exclusively with a rear-mounted electric motor producing 201 horsepower and 229 pound-feet (310 Newton-meters) of torque. Chances are a future variant will add a front motor and enable AWD with around 300 hp to mirror the ID.5 GTX. Much like the other EVs riding on the bespoke architecture, the electric people mover will have short overhangs and a long wheelbase to maximize interior space.

In regards to size, it’ll be 4,712 mm long, 1,985 mm wide (without mirrors), and 1,937 mm tall (1938 mm for the cargo model), with a wheelbase stretching at 2,988 mm. VW Commercial Vehicles has previously said it will offer the ID Buzz with various alloy wheels measuring from 18 to 21 inches. While the passenger model will have a cargo capacity of 1,121 liters, the cargo model is going to offer 3.9m3.

Other known details include a turning circle of around 11 meters and an electronically capped top speed of 90 mph (145 km/h). The cargo variant, which won’t be coming to the United States, will come as standard with a partition wall and is going to feature three front seats. VW will assemble the ID Buzz in Hannover, Germany and will commence sales in Europe this fall, with the US to get the electric van from 2023.

March 9 will be the day when Volkswagen is going to (finally) introduce the ID Buzz in production guise. We’re going to see both the passenger model and the cargo version. While all teasers released by the German marque have focused on the former, a new video gives us a closer look at the latter. Members of the media were invited to check out a pre-production prototype of the workhorse, but journalists weren’t allowed to show everything.

Nevertheless, Bjørn Nyland’s walkaround video is a good opportunity to see the VW ID Buzz Cargo and its three front seats. Of course, the most important feature of the version engineered to carry bulky items is the load area with its massive capacity of 3.9 m3. It’s worth noting the commercial version has a partition wall behind the seats and comes with a slightly wider load sill, measuring 623 mm.

Another change compared to the passenger variant is the switch from a giant tailgate to “barn doors” providing access to a cargo area that can take two euro pallets. VW has mentioned the ID Buzz Cargo will offer a payload capacity of 750 kilograms (1,653 pounds) while the load area will be a little over two meters long. Some versions of the electric van will feature a dedicated storage area underneath the passenger side to put even longer items.

The video also shows the electrically deployable tow bar by pressing a button on the left side of the cargo area while the other side has a power socket. Several hooks along with rails to secure the items will be installed and we also get to learn the production ID Buzz Cargo will have electrically operated sliding doors. Towards the end of the video, we can observe the door on the right must be closed first before shutting the left one.

Initially, the VW ID Buzz Cargo will be sold only with rear-wheel drive, a single electric motor, and a battery pack with a net capacity of 77 kWh. The MEB-based electric van has 201 hp and 310 Nm (229 lb-ft) on tap and will have an electronically governed top speed of 90 mph (145 km/h).

Production in Hannover, Germany will commence in the first half of the year, with the first units to be delivered in Europe this fall. The US will only get the passenger model, scheduled to arrive in 2023.

At long last, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has shared juicy technical specifications regarding the hotly anticipated ID Buzz. The electric minivan won’t debut until March 9, but we do know quite a bit about the Microbus revival with an EV twist. Let’s cut to the chase and mention the passenger version comes with five seats while the van will have three, all in the front.

The production-ready ID Buzz is 4712 mm long, 1985 mm wide (without mirrors), and 1937 mm tall (1938 mm for the cargo model). It has a wheelbase stretching at 2988 mm and a load sill measuring 619 mm for the five-seat model and 623 mm for the three-seat cargo flavor. The luggage area measures up to 1,121 liters for the passenger model while the cargo variant has over 3.9 m3. The latter comes with a partition wall.

It will initially be offered with a single-motor, rear-wheel-drive layout and 201 horsepower (150 kilowatts) and 310 Newton-meters (229 pound-feet). The VW ID Buzz gets the 82-kWh battery with a net capacity of 77 kWh, but details regarding the range are not available at this point. We do know a bigger pack will follow later on to help the electric van cover longer distances. In addition, bidirectional charging will be supported.

The top speed is electronically limited to 90 mph (145 km/h) and the turning circle is a little over 11 meters. Wheel size varies from 18 to 21 inches. As all other ID models sold by VW, the new Buzz is based on the MEB platform shared with the Skoda Enyaq, Cupra Born, and the Audi Q4 E-Tron. A more powerful all-wheel-drive model with a front-mounted electric motor and a total of around 300 hp could happen by using the hardware installed in the ID.5 GTX.

Production of both the passenger and cargo versions will commence at the plant in Hannover in the first half of 2022 and sales will begin in Europe this fall. In the United States where VW will only sell the former variant, the ID Buzz will be available later on in 2023. Further down the line, a camper derivative dubbed California is set to arrive, but not before 2025.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles will introduce the production-ready ID Buzz on March 9, but it won’t be until a couple of days later when the electric van will be shown to the public. Its first appearance in front of the general audience will take place during the South by Southwest festival on March 11. In the meantime, the hotly anticipated EV is “backpacking” through Europe on its way to the SXSW in Austin, Texas.

The 2023 ID Buzz started its European journey at home in Hannover where it will be manufactured. It then traveled to some of the most important cities on the Old Continent, including Barcelona, London, Paris, and Amsterdam. As expected, the zero-emissions people mover still had the colorful livery we’ve been seeing for the past few months.

VW was kind enough to remove the disguise from the headlights and taillights to provide a better look at the final version. Much like other electric vehicles riding on the MEB platform, it gets light bars at both the front and rear, along with the discreetly updated corporate badge. The teaser images appear to depict the passenger-oriented model, but the company has already confirmed the cargo version will be introduced on March 9 as well.

Believed to start from a rather steep €60,000 in Germany, the ID Buzz will spawn a more expensive California camper derivative around 2025. Unlike many other dedicated EVs, the van is not going to feature a front trunk (frunk), not that it should be much of an issue given the spacious interior. Company CEO Ralf Brandstätter has said it will be the firm’s most emotional EV to date, and it certainly has some big shoes to fill given the Microbus heritage.

The boxy van without a combustion engine should come in rear- and all-wheel-drive configurations with a single- and dual-motor setup, respectively. The 82-kWh lithium-ion battery with a usable capacity of 77 kWh as seen in other ID-badged models will likely be standard across the range. Logic tells us a bigger pack could be eventually offered considering the ID Buzz will be bigger and heavier than the other ID models.

In precisely a month from today, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles will finally take the wraps off the ID Buzz in production form. Taking styling cues from the iconic Type 2 Microbus, the electric van will be sold as a passenger version with a couple of wheelbase lengths. In addition, a cargo derivative has long been confirmed, and now we know it too will premiere on March 9.

The disclosure was made via an official VW account on Twitter. There is a third flavor of the ID Buzz in the works, but it will arrive much later. We are talking about a camper model dubbed “California” slated to go on sale after 2025. Also around the middle of the decade, a fully autonomous van utilizing software developed by self-driving technology specialist Argo AI will arrive for ride-hailing services.

On a related note, reputable German print publication Automobilwoche and a sister site of Automotive News, has preliminary information about the starting price of the ID Buzz. The passenger version will allegedly kick off from €60,000 in Germany where the customer should end up paying €50,000 after EV-related incentives.

It is believed pricing details will be disclosed shortly after the world premiere on March 9. As previously reported, Europe will be the first to get the ID Buzz in both passenger and cargo configurations. The US launch is slated for 2023 and VW of America plans to sell the boxy EV exclusively with a long-wheelbase passenger-oriented layout.

VW has been coy on details about the ID Buzz, but we’ve recently learned it won’t have a front trunk. In addition, the electric all-rounder will ride on the MEB platform adapted from the ID.3 hatchback as well as the ID.4, ID.5, and ID.6 SUVs. That means a rear-wheel-drive setup for the lesser versions and a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive configuration for the more expensive ones. The most powerful should have around 300 horsepower and a lithium-ion battery pack with a usable capacity of 77 kWh.

On the road to its hotly anticipated reveal, the ID Buzz has landed in the hands of car journalists invited by Volkswagen to get a first taste of the electric van. It took place this week in London where the company’s commercial division brought a prototype carrying the already familiar colorful prototype. Even though we’re still not allowed to take a peek inside, a couple of details have emerged.

Not that it comes as a big surprise, the VW ID Buzz doesn’t have a front trunk. Or, as the cool kids say, a frunk. We weren’t expecting it to have one seeing as how the van has an extremely short front overhang with limited room in front of the wheels. In addition, none of the other electric vehicles based on the MEB platform have a storage area at the front.

The lack of a frunk might come as a disappointment on the ID.3 hatchback and to a lesser extent on the ID.4, ID.5, and ID.6 models, but it shouldn’t be a concern for the Buzz. The loveable box on wheels will be by far the most spacious of them all, so you most definitely won’t be needing a second cargo area. Of course, it would’ve been nice to have one, but the ID Buzz is not the first dedicated EV to do away with the front cargo.

You can open that compartment since it still serves a functional role, although not to put your luggage. Instead, the front lid provides access to the washer fluid container. Some of the electric van’s internals can also be seen in the same area, but those should be of no concern to the owner. It’s unclear whether the test vehicle had a front-mounted electric motor. That said, all-wheel drive with around 300 horsepower as the ID.4 GTX seems like an educated guess.

We also get to learn where VW has installed the charging port owners will use to juice up the battery. It’s on the rear-right fender, just behind the wheel. Speaking of which, the battery is likely the same pack used by the ID.4 where it has a total capacity of 82 kWh of which 77 kWh is usable. Seeing as how the ID Buzz will carry more people and/or heavy loads that will put a strain on the maximum range, a bigger battery could be in the works as well.

Another day, another teaser for the ID. Buzz. This time around, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles previews the much-hyped electric van out on the streets as well as in a digital environment. We’re looking at a pre-production version with virtually all of the final bits and bobs in place prior to the world premiere scheduled for March 9.

In the meantime, journalists have been invited to get behind the wheel of prototypes for a camouflaged pre-drive scheduled to take place next month in Barcelona. They’ll all be driving these colorfully disguised vans to get a first taste of what VW has said will be its most emotional EV to date. The cheerful box on wheels shows has been a long time coming seeing as how the concept is already five years old, having been revealed in January 2017 at the Detroit Auto Show.

With the camouflage being so thin, it doesn’t actually hide much. We can easily see the ID Buzz will have LED light bars at both the front and rear fascias. Other visible traits include the sliding rear doors you would expect from a van, along with the typically short overhangs of a dedicated EV. VW keeps teasing the passenger model, likely because the commercial version due to be offered in Europe will go on sale slightly later.

With a largely closed-off “grille” and aerodynamic wheels, you can easily tell we are dealing with an EV. It will be interesting to find out its drag coefficient given the upright rear end, while those chunky mirrors will certainly hurt the airflow. The rear lights are quite slim in relation to the sheer size of the tailgate, which will make it easy to load and unload cargo.

Following the release of the passenger and commercial versions, VW will diversify the lineup around 2025 by launching a camper version dubbed California. In the meantime, expect the regular ID Buzz to be offered with a couple of wheelbase configurations, with the US-bound van likely getting the longer model.

Even though Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has been teasing the ID. Buzz relentlessly, YouTuber Bjørn Nyland is providing us with our best look yet at the electric van. Still carrying the colorful camouflage, the EV revival of the Microbus was spotted at a fast-charging station in Norway parked between a Tesla Model S and a Porsche Taycan.

Interestingly, the 2023 VW ID. Buzz appears to be more compact than we originally believed since the video gives us the impression it’s narrower and shorter than the red Tesla. It should still be quite spacious thanks to a boxy shape with short overhangs and a tall roofline. The prototype depicts a passenger model, but a commercial derivative is in the pipeline, with a California camper to follow from 2025.

VW has been coy on details, but we do know the ID. Buzz will borrow the MEB platform that has already underpinned the ID.3 hatchback along with the ID.4, ID.5, and the ID.6 SUVs. Confirmed to go on sale later this year in Europe and from 2023 in the United States, the electric people-mover is going to be sold with a couple of drivetrains and battery packages.

Logic tells us buyers will get to pick from rear- and all-wheel drive, with a single- and dual-motor setup. The biggest battery currently offered by VW for its ID-badged models has a total capacity of 82 kWh, which translates to a useable capacity of 77 kWh. It would make sense for the ID. Buzz to get it as well, perhaps an even bigger pack seeing as how it will be able to carry more people than the existing ID. models.

Touted as being VW’s most emotional EV, the much-hyped ID. Buzz will officially break cover on March 9. When the disguise will drop, it won’t be as interesting as the namesake concept from January 2017, but we’re still hoping for quite a few retro touches as a nod to its ancestor.

Volkswagen has been generating quite the buzz (pun intended) in the build-up to the world premiere of the production-ready ID. Buzz. Ever since the namesake concept was unveiled nearly three years ago, various company officials went on record to say this or that about the electric revival of the legendary Microbus. Case in point, CEO Ralf Brandstätter had a few words to say about the new EV.

In an interview with Autocar, VW’s head honcho promised the ID. Buzz will demonstrate the vehicle has been developed by “people who love cars.” He went as far as to say it’ll “definitely be the most emotional of our electric models.” The latter statement comes as somewhat of a surprise since the high-performance GTX versions of the ID.4 and ID.5 fit that bill as well.

The highest-ranked executive told the British magazine the 2022 ID. Buzz will help VW in its quest to evolve into “the most desirable brand for sustainable mobility.” The numerous teasers have revealed the largest electric model to ride on the MEB platform won’t look as exciting as the 2019 concept. Nevertheless, we still have high hopes the road-going model will add spice to an otherwise bland van segment.

It will be the first MEB-based EV to offer a commercial version as VW plans to sell the ID. Buzz in both passenger- and cargo-oriented configurations. Not only that, but a California camper will follow in 2025 when there are also plans to introduce an autonomous derivative for ride-hailing services. Unlike the ID.3 and ID.5, the boxy van will be sold in the United States where we’re only expecting to see the passenger model with a long-wheelbase setup.

The Hanover-built VW ID. Buzz will come in both rear- and all-wheel-drive flavors courtesy of a single- and dual-motor setup, respectively. At the top of the food chain should be the powertrain available in the GTX-badged SUVs where it pumps out close to 300 hp. A similar setup is offered in China for the three-row ID.6 SUV and its equivalent Audi Q5 E-Tron.

We’ve honestly lost count of how many teasers Volkswagen has released for the ID. Buzz, but this is more substantial than the others. It shows the much-hyped electric van has entered pre-production at the plant in Hanover, Germany. Several prototypes have rolled off the assembly line before getting covered in a colorful camouflage to conceal the final design.

The front and side profile designs have already been previewed in an official image shared by VW Commercial Vehicles, which is why we’ll be focusing on the van’s rear. The Buzz’s derriere appears for a brief moment in the 33-second clip shared on YouTube to confirm it’s the next EV in line to get a wide LED light bar.

These pre-production prototypes are carrying German license plates and are currently making the trip to Barcelona in Spain. That’s where journalists will be given the opportunity to test the ID. Buzz during a Covered Drive event scheduled to take place next week. As expected, they’ll be getting behind the wheel of the passenger version as the cargo model will likely arrive at a later date.

Europe will be the first to get the electric take on the classic Microbus from the latter half of 2022 while US buyers will have to patiently wait until next year. VW has plans to sell the ID. Buzz with multiple wheelbases and logic tells us the longest one is coming to North America where the cargo won’t be available.

In the long run, the zero-emission van will spawn a California camper set to arrive around 2025 when a fully autonomous derivative will hit the streets for ride-hailing services. In the meantime, the regular Buzz variants are expected to get the largest battery VW currently sells for its ID-badged models, specifically an 82-kWh pack. It has a useable capacity of 77 kWh and should offer a decent range, although that will depend on how many passengers you will be carrying and the amount of luggage.
