General Motors is fast-tracking its transition to electric vehicles by launching a variety of EVs across several segments of the market. The newly developed Ultium platform serves as the backbone for the zero-emissions onslaught, and early signs are showing it’s a success. Even though the 2024 Silverado EV debuted less than a month ago, it has already racked up more than 110,000 reservations.

Meanwhile, the much more expensive GMC Hummer pickup truck together with its SUV equivalent have generated combined interest in excess of 59,000 reservations. At the same time, BrightDrop vans are also in high demand as more than 25,000 reservations have been made so far. No numbers have been provided for the Cadillac Lyriq of which customer deliveries are scheduled to begin in the coming months.

Bear in mind Chevrolet has already announced the Equinox EV and Blazer EV will go on sale during the 2024 model year, so GM has a lot on its plate when it comes to diversifying its electric offerings. To make it happen, the North American conglomerate has already invested more than $14 billion in 10 states across the country since 2020 and will spend a further $7 billion to boost battery cell and EV assembly capacity.

GM head honcho Mary Barra said one of the short-term objectives is to sell 400,000 purely electric vehicles in North America through 2023. However, the future looks grim for the Bolt EV and Bolt EUV as the factory in Orion Township, Michigan where the two are made will be repurposed for other products. It’s necessary to reach an overall target for 2026 of producing 600,000 electric trucks by the end of 2025.

Getting back to the Silverado EV, GM says more than 240 fleet operations have made reservations for the fullsize electric pickup. In addition, BrightDrop has lured in some big names, including Walmart and FedEx Express, which will be using their cargo vans. While no reservations numbers have been made public for the Lyriq, GM is happy to report it won’t organize a new round of reservations because the backlog is already pretty big. Instead, Cadillac will begin to take customer orders after the Debut Edition hits the market in March.

The Chevrolet Bolt EV along with the recently added Bolt EUV might be living on borrowed time. This week, parent company General Motors detailed a new plan to invest a whopping $7 billion in Michigan to build electric vehicles and batteries. As part of the announcement, GM said the factory in Orion Township where the two Bolt models are made will evolve into something else.

While the zero-emissions hatchback and crossover will remain in production during the factory’s conversion, there’s no word what will happen after that. GM intends to begin the revamp right away and end the transformational process by 2024. As to what will become of the Bolt EV and Bolt EUV, your guess is as good as ours.

CNET’s Roadshow contacted GM, but a spokesperson refused to comment about the fate of the Bolt duo. What we do know for the time being is the overhauled facility will be tasked to assemble the 2024 Silverado EV and a fully electric GMC Sierra. With the smaller electric cars tracing their roots to old architectures, the writing may be on the wall for the two Bolt models.

There’s also the issue with Bolt’s heavily tainted past as the electric hatch has had a tumultuous life due to numerous recall campaigns. The fire hazard has prompted a $2-billion recall, and even though LG Chem is paying the bill, this has certainly put the Bolt in a bad light. Consequently, Chevy might want to start fresh with an all-new model that would sit on a more advanced platform and adopt an entirely different moniker.

Another plausible scenario is the Bolt EUV will die to make room for the already announced Chevy Equinox EV. The regular Bolt hatchback might be discontinued without even an indirect successor since small cars are not exactly popular in North America.

General Motors introduced the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV earlier this month as the first non-Cadillac model to feature Super Cruise. The semi-autonomous driving system will be available in as many as 22 cars by 2023 after originally debuting several years ago on the CT6. That’s certainly a step taken in the right direction, but the electric Bolt-badged crossover will be missing out on one key feature.

While models such as the latest CT4, CT5, and Escalade feature an Automated Lane Change function, it’s not going to be available in the Bolt EUV. It has to do with the vehicle’s lack of a specific electronic architecture that makes this functionality possible on the aforementioned Cadillac models. GM dubs it as the “Vehicle Intelligent Platform,” and according to Super Cruise Assistant Program Engineering Manager, Jeff Dinakar, the Automated Lane Change function requires VIP.

You might be wondering by now why the Bolt EUV lacks the latest hardware developed by GM considering it’s a brand new model. Well, it’s more along the lines of a crossover equivalent of the regular Bolt hatchback, which originally went on sale for the 2017 model year. In other words, it’s technically not a new vehicle as its platform has been around for a while, launched at a time when the upgraded Super Cruise was not available.

The Automated Lane Change feature is an evolution of GM’s semi-autonomous driving system and was introduced for the 2021 model year on those three Cadillac models. Using the turn signal prompts Super Cruise to automatically switch lanes, provided the onboard sensors confirm the conditions are safe for the maneuver to be made. Various messages are displayed in the instrument cluster to let the driver know about what’s going on, sending alerts like “looking for an opening” and “changing lanes.”

It’s the same story with all pre-2021MY Cadillacs as the older cars that have Super Cruise can’t be updated with the Automated Lane Change. Why? Because this feature requires upgraded rear-facing sensors and revised software, which can’t be retrofitted to vehicles that don’t have the extra electrical bandwidth and data processing power.

The most affordable 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E money can buy kicks off at $43,995 once you factor in the mandatory destination charges. That’s a lot more than the recently unveiled 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV, available from $33,995 with destination. However, this massive $10,000 price difference vanishes once you factor in all the available price cuts for the Blue Oval’s electric SUV.

For starters, the Mach-E can still be had with the full $7,500 federal tax credit, unlike the new Bolt EUV. That brings the price down to $36,495, and on top of that, customers can take advantage of a $2,500 discount through the Ford Options Plan, which is along the lines of a regular lease plan. Doing the math, the zero-emissions ‘Stang has a sticker price of $33,995, thus matching that of the newcomer from Chevy.

Ok, perhaps this isn’t a completely fair comparison since the Bolt EUV was unveiled only a few days ago and therefore Chevy has yet to announce any potential incentives for those interested in leasing or buying outright. But if you don’t want to wait and you have around $35,000 to spend, it’s certainly interesting to be able to pick from two significantly different vehicles.

If you’re looking to spend less on your next EV purchase, Chevy has lowered the starting price of the Bolt hatchback by more than $5,000 despite making several improvements for the 2022 model year. The electric hatch, now starts at just $31,995 and offers 259 miles of range or nine miles more than the slightly larger and heavier Bolt EUV. For the sake of comparison, the base Mustang Mach-E has 230 miles of range and is rear-wheel-drive rather than the Bolt models, which send their power to the front wheels.

It probably won’t take too long before the company with the bowtie emblem will introduce some incentives for the pair of Bolt EVs. In the meantime, there are likely some enticing deals to be had for the remaining 2021 Bolt inventory to make room at dealer lots for the new version programmed to go on sale this summer.

Joining the 2022 Bolt EV hatchback, the first-ever crossover version adds utility by growing in size over the regular model. It’s about 6 inches (15 centimeters) longer than the hatch and comes with roof rails as standard equipment, and while the two models look alike, Chevrolet says no exterior body panels are shared between the two electric vehicles.

The EUV offers an additional 3 inches (7.6 centimeters) of legroom thanks to the increased footprint and benefits from a panoramic power sunroof. The front seats are both heated and ventilated, while the rear outboard seats are heated as well. The crossover shares the 10.2-inch touchscreen infotainment and 8-inch color driver’s display with the regular hatchback.

The ace up the crossover’s sleeve is the optionally available Super Cruise, making the Bolt EUV the first Chevrolet to offer GM’s hands-free driver assistance system. It can be activated on more than 200,000 miles (320,000 kilometers) of enabled roads in the United States and Canada. There’s a camera mounted on top of the steering column that determines whether the driver is paying attention when Super Cruise is active.

If the driver isn’t paying attention for an extended amount of time, a light bar built into the steering wheel alerts the driver to turn their attention to the road. Should the driver ignore the warning lights, additional visible and audible alerts are automatically issued to notify the driver about having to take control of the vehicle.

As it is the case with the standard Bolt EV, its crossover equivalent uses a 65-kWh, lithium-ion battery pack. Because the EUV is about 90 pounds (41 kilograms) heavier than the hatchback, at 3,679 pounds (1,669 kilograms), GM estimates its maximum range is 250 miles (402 kilometers) or 9 miles (15 kilometers) less than the hatchback.

Motivation is provided by an identical single electric motor rated at 200 horsepower (150 kilowatts) and 266 pound-feet (360 Newton-meters) of near-instant torque. Once you run out of battery juice, owners can add 95 miles of range in only 30 minutes of charging thanks to the Bolt EUV’s standard DC fast-charging public capabilities.

While the Bolt EV kicks off at $31,995 (including destination charges) or $5,000+ less than the model it replaces, the EUV is going to set you back $33,995 before options. The aforementioned Super Cruise system will be available on the Premier trim level.

Both the hatchback and crossover will go on sale in North America this summer.

The Chevrolet Bolt EUV has been a long time coming considering General Motors first filed to trademark the electric crossover’s name back in April 2019. Spy shots emerged about a month later, but it wasn’t until August that year when the model was officially announced. There have been plenty of teasers since then, and the latest preview of the Bolt EUV announces when the reveal will take place.

Chevrolet will unveil both the updated Bolt hatchback and its crossover companion on Sunday, February 14. It has teamed up with Walt Disney World for the double world premiere to “show how magic can take place when the imagination is electrified.” The latest teaser video highlights the tie-up between the two brands, but more importantly, we can see more of the Bolt EUV’s metal.

The rear end design is almost entirely revealed, showing the LED graphics of the taillights and a glossy black bar extending across the entire width of the tailgate. The bowtie emblem appears to have a dark finish as well unless the lighting is playing tricks on us. The “Bolt EUV” lettering is prominently featured in the bottom-left corner of the tailgate, with some of the letters finished in blue.

Towards the end of the 15-second clip, we receive confirmation of a rumor that has been floating around the World Wide Web for a while. The Bolt EUV is getting a sunroof, which the current Bolt lacks. It remains to be seen whether the updated regular hatchback will be getting one, too. Not displayed during the video, but a previous teaser showed the zero-emissions crossover will be getting sequential LED turn signals, a Chevy-first.

A recent preview of the Bolt EUV indirectly hinted the vehicle will offer a maximum range between cycles of nearly 280 miles (451 kilometers), but we’ll have to wait for an official confirmation from Chevrolet. What we do know for sure is the small electric crossover is one of the 22 GM products scheduled to receive the Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving system by 2023.

Following its official debut next month, the 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV and hatchback will enter production this summer.

The Chevrolet Bolt facelift was supposed to come out for the 2021 model year, but that didn’t happen due to delays caused by the coronavirus pandemic. The electric small hatchback should be well worth the wait as now we’re hearing the company with the bowtie emblem has “listened to customers” while developing the mid-cycle update.

That’s the promise made by Steve Majoros, Chevrolet’s Vice President of Marketing, in a recent interview with our colleagues at GM Authority. While he didn’t go into specific details, it’s refreshing to hear customer feedback remains relevant, even when an automaker is preparing only a facelift compared to a next-generation model.

GM has had an extensive teaser campaign for the 2022 Bolt, but the model previewed so far has actually been the new EUV. Essentially a crossover version, the slightly larger model will ride on the same GM BEVII architecture used by the hatchback, with both slated to adopt the Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving system.

While the outgoing Bolt offers 259 miles (416 kilometers) of range, a recent teaser suggests Chevy has made improvements to the vehicle’s efficiency. The EV is expected to cover roughly 277 miles (445 kilometers) between charges, but it’s unclear whether it will be from the same 66-kWh lithium-ion battery or a larger pack.

One of the issues expected to be addressed with the upcoming 2022MY is the availability of a sunroof, at least in the case of the Bolt EUV. The facelift will also see the introduction of sequential LED turn signals – representing a first for a production Chevrolet model. Aside from exterior revisions, the facelift is going to bring some improvements throughout the interior.

Following its world premiere in February, the 2022 Bolt in both hatchback and crossover body styles will enter production at GM’s Lake Orion factory in Michigan from this summer and should hit the market later this year.

General Motors did more than just tease the Cadillac Celestiq today as it also provided another glimpse at the Chevrolet Bolt EUV. A new teaser image + video combo allows us to hop behind the new steering wheel of the Bolt crossover and also check out the fully digital instrument cluster. The very first model from the bowtie company to offer Super Cruise hands-free driver assistance system will debut next month, together with a refresh for the regular Bolt.

From previous teaser episodes, we got to learn the Bolt EUV will mark another premiere for Chevy by being the first production car to use sequential LED turn signals. Both flavors of the EV will come only in a front-wheel-drive configuration and are scheduled to enter production this summer. The crossover is reportedly getting an optional sunroof, which the normal Bolt hasn’t offered so far.

The teaser released today during the digital-only CES 2021 shows a light bar mounted within the steering wheel rim to show the status of Super Cruise. In addition, the steering wheel incorporates a camera to monitor the driver and make sure they’re paying close attention to what’s up ahead. Seeing the advanced semi-autonomous driving system in a small and affordable car goes to show the technology is ready to trickle down after originally debuting a few years ago on the Cadillac CT6.

While GM is working on Ultium batteries promising up to 450 miles (724 kilometers), the two Bolt models are not going to use the new battery tech and therefore will have a lower range. Judging by the battery charge level displayed in this teaser and the 235 miles of available range, we’re guessing the Bolt EUV will do 270-280 miles between charges. We’re getting the impression some important upgrades will be made inside the cabin in terms of quality, with nicer materials here and there. The Electric Utility Vehicle (EUV) will likely offer a roomier cabin since there could be a bump in size over the standard hatchback.

With production beginning this summer, it means customer deliveries of both Chevy Bolt models will probably begin before the end of 2021.
