Land Rover has unveiled the all-new Range Rover for 2022, but the smaller and more agile Sport version won’t arrive until later this year. Both of them will eventually receive purely electric powertrains as part of Land Rover’s “Reimagine” strategy to launch six EVs by 2026. The Discovery and Defender will also be getting the zero-emissions treatment in this timeframe.

A new report from Autocar aims to shed light on how the Range Rover Sport will be reinvented for its next iteration. Aside from the usual crop of combustion engines, the British magazine claims there is a distinct possibility the EV model will borrow hardware from the BMW iX. The journalists are making this assumption based on the fact Land Rover is dropping the supercharged 5.0-liter V8 to use BMW’s twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 for its better efficiency and greater power.

Autocar is not ruling out an extension of the arrangement between Land Rover and BMW to allow the former to use the latter’s EV know-how. If that’s going to be the case, the Range Rover Sport EV could feature all-wheel drive by installing an electric motor at the front and another one to drive the rear axle. In the M60 version of the iX, the hardware arrangement is good for a massive 610 hp (455 kW) and 1,100 Nm (810 lb-ft) of torque.

It would likely end up being the most powerful version of the Range Rover Sport, at least as far as torque is concerned. It could very well outpunch the BMW V8-powered SVR version, but the conventional model should still end up quicker on a twisty road by being substantially lighter. Either way, the all-electric model should have dual motors since Land Rover is known for the AWD capabilities of its products.

The first electric Land Rover will arrive in 2024 when the Range Rover will receive the EV treatment. The Sport should follow suit, while Jaguar will abandon combustion engines altogether from 2025. These new products are a stepping stone to achieving carbon neutrality across car production, supply chain, and all related operations by 2039.

Land Rover unveiled the all-new Range Rover in late October 2021 and now it has opened the order books for early adopters. Those interested in getting the plug-in hybrid will be happy to know the electric range is now higher than originally announced. When the world premiere took place, the British luxury brand said both P440e and P510e would cover 62 miles (100 kilometers) on a single charge.

However, the final WLTP figure is a bit better as the two PHEVs versions of the premium SUV will do 70 miles (113 kilometers) without any CO2 emissions. Speaking of which, the company says its overhauled Range Rover is greener than initially announced by emitting only 18 g/km instead of 30 g/km. Both share the 38.2-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, which has a useable capacity of 31.8 kWh.

Once the battery is depleted, it can be charged at up to 50 kW, in which case you get 80% of the juice back in less than an hour. Land Rover goes as far as to say the 2022 Range Rover is one of the quickest-charging PHEVs out there. The Tata Motors-owned marque mentions it takes about five hours to fully replenish the battery from a domestic 7.2 kW charger. Realistically, you should expect a maximum range of 54 miles (88 kilometers), according to the manufacturer’s estimations.

The base electrified model has 440 horsepower and 620 Newton-meters (457 pound-feet) of torque while the more potent derivative is rated at 510 hp and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft). The two Range Rover PHEVs not only share the battery, but also the electric motor producing 141 hp. The difference between the two stems from the combustion engine, a turbocharged straight-six 3.0-liter unit featuring a higher output in the case of the P510e.

While the lesser P440e can be had in both standard- and long-wheelbase configurations, the beefier one comes exclusively with the shorter wheelbase. The P510e needs only 5.6 seconds to hit 62 mph (100 km/h) from a standstill or 5.3 seconds until 60 mph (96 km/h).

Customers can order the electrified fullsize SUV in SE, HSE, and Autobiography trim levels, with all featuring a panoramic sunroof, rear-wheel steering, and a 13.1-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system. There’s also a First Edition available during the first 12 months of production and based on the Autobiography. It stands out courtesy of a Sunset Gold satin paint, but there are other hues to pick from.

Come 2024, a purely electric Range Rover will hit the market, with a hydrogen derivative also being considered. Meanwhile, pricing for the P440e kicks off from £103,485 at home in the UK.

The all-new, fifth-generation Range Rover debuted yesterday with two plug-in hybrid powertrains and the promise of a fully electric version scheduled to come out in 2024. While just about everyone assumed it would be only a battery-powered EV, that might not be the case. In an interview with British magazine Autocar, Land Rover program director Nick Miller did not rule out the possibility of a fuel cell version as well.

He explained the Modular Longitudinal Architecture underpinning the 2022 Range Rover has been developed to accommodate a hydrogen powertrain. As you may recall, MLA was initially programmed to debut with the next-generation Jaguar XJ electric sedan, but the fullsize luxobarge was canceled right before its official premiere. Land Rover now says that aside from gasoline/diesel mild-hybrid engines, plug-in hybrids, and battery-powered EVs, the platform can also be used for a fuel cell electric vehicle.

The Tata Motors-owned company is no stranger to hydrogen as it’s already testing a Defender prototype fitted with a fuel cell. In the coming months, Land Rover is expected to take the wraps off a drivable concept to demonstrate the advantages a hydrogen-fueled vehicle offers over an equivalent EV powered by batteries.

FCEVs do indeed provide a longer range than a battery-electric car and can be refilled in only a few minutes, comparable to a car fitted with a combustion engine, but the lack of infrastructure is a big problem that’s unlikely to be resolved in the near future. It’s the main reason why Toyota is selling the second-generation Mirai only in select markets where there are enough charging stations.

These EVs, whether they have batteries or a fuel cell, are part of Land Rover’s greater plan to reach zero emissions as early as 2036. Meanwhile, no fewer than six electric models – including the Range Rover EV – are coming in the next five years, with Jaguar becoming a purely electric brand from 2025.

The first new Range Rover in almost a decade is finally here as Land Rover has officially taken the wraps off its flagship SUV. You might be getting the impression it’s more of a facelift rather than a next-generation model judging by the familiar styling, but in reality, the luxobarge is all-new underneath the skin. Switching to the MLA platform, the fullsize premium SUV has been developed from the ground up to remain competitive in a hugely challenging segment.

Even though the signature boxy styling has been retained, Land Rover claims its revamped Range Rover is the most aerodynamically efficient luxury SUV ever. It has a drag coefficient of only 0.30 to maximize efficiency, enhanced by the availability of two plug-in hybrid versions available from day one. Both the P440e and P510e combine a 3.0-liter, six-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine with an electric motor, with the difference being the total system output.

The base P440e plug-in hybrid model provides 440 horsepower and 620 Newton-meters of torque whereas the more potent P510 has 510 hp and 700 Nm on tap. The beefier Range Rover PHEV will do 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 5.6 seconds and Land Rover says it emits just 30 g/km of CO2. Both electrified versions of the SUV get their electric juice from a lithium-ion battery pack featuring a capacity of 38.2 kWh, of which 31.8 kWh is usable.

The P440e and P510e aim to cover as much as 62 miles (100 kilometers) of EV range based on the WLTP test cycle, but Land Rover admits maximum range in the real world will be about 50 miles (80 kilometers). That’s still mighty impressive given the sheer size and heft of the luxury behemoth. These PHEV versions utilize a 105-kilowatt electric motor built into the transmission, and when driven in EV mode, the top speed is electronically capped at 87 mph (140 km/h).

Once the battery is depleted, the Range Rover PHEV’s pack can be charged to 80% in less than an hour thanks to 50-kW DC charging capabilities. Land Rover mentions it’s one of the quickest-charging plug-in hybrid models available. Alternatively, owners can replenish the battery using a domestic 7.2 kW AC wall box, but a full recharge will take five hours. With the gasoline tank full and a fully charged battery, the 2022 Range Rover in plug-in hybrid guise will cover approximately 400 miles (644 kilometers).

Land Rover is already taking orders and will kick off customer deliveries in 2022.

Land Rover introduced today the fifth-generation Range Rover and we’ve already detailed its two plug-in hybrid powertrains. The P440e and P510e PHEV models are complemented by a pair of gasoline and three diesel engines all equipped with mild-hybrid tech, with only the BMW-sourced 4.4-liter, twin-turbo V8 lacking electrification.

For a Range Rover that will do away with the internal combustion engine altogether, you will have to wait until 2024 when Land Rover says a purely electric variant of the company’s flagship SUV is going to hit the market. The Tata Motors-owned British brand sadly doesn’t go into any details about the EV, only saying that it’s “spearheading Land Rover’s drive towards the electric future.”

A zero-emissions Range Rover isn’t all too surprising since we’ve known for a while the all-new flagship SUV would ride on Jaguar Land Rover’s MLA platform. The architecture has been developed to accommodate gasoline, diesel, plug-in hybrid, and EV powertrains. It was supposed to debut already with the next-gen Jaguar XJ, but the fullsize electric sedan was canceled at the very last minute.

With the plug-in hybrids already promising to offer a somewhat substantial 62 miles (100 kilometers) of electric range per the WLTP cycle from their 31.8-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, we’re expecting great things from the EV model. We can all agree anything a range between charging of fewer than 300 miles (483 kilometers) in the real world would be simply unacceptable for a luxury SUV with the prestige few models in this segment can match.

Weight will certainly be a concern considering the Range Rover equipped with combustion engines is already a heavy SUV, but with a vehicle of this size, the engineers can fit a large battery pack. Not being an electric-only platform could mean some compromises will be made in terms of packaging, so the EV version might not be as roomy as the Mercedes EQS SUV coming next year.

The Range Rover EV is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Jaguar Land Rover’s electric ambitions as another five vehicles without a combustion engine will arrive within the next five years. These will cover not just the Range Rover / Range Rover Sport lineup, but also the Discovery and the Defender. As a refresher, Jaguar will entirely switch to EVs from 2025 when all of its cars powered by gasoline and diesel engines are going to be discontinued.

Land Rover has published the first teaser images of the all-new Range Rover ahead of its October 26 debut. The British luxury brand remains tight-lipped regarding the fullsize SUV’s technical specifications, but the two photos give us an idea regarding the exterior appearance. As expected, the Bentley Bentayga competitor will retain the boxy shape and should have an evolutionary design.

Despite looking oh-so-familiar, the 2022 Range Rover is actually going to be an all-new vehicle by adopting the MLA platform. That means it’s going to be the most electrified generation of the luxobarge ever, with mild-hybrid tech likely standard across the range. In addition, a more efficient plug-in hybrid version has been spied testing repeatedly and should be available from day one.

The biggest news we’re expecting from Land Rover is the confirmation of a purely electric version, which multiple reports say is scheduled to hit the market sometime in 2024. One would argue that’s a bit too late seeing as how the Tesla Model X has been around for so long while Mercedes is putting the finishing touches on the EQS SUV prior to its 2022 launch, with a smaller EQE SUV not far behind.

Owned by Tata Motors, Jaguar Land Rover has announced its intentions to become a purely electric automotive group by 2039. As a matter of fact, Jaguar will be switching to an EV-only lineup as early as 2025, and the conglomerate aims to introduce its first zero-emissions production model after the I-Pace in 2024, like the Range Rover. No fewer than six EVs across the Range Rover, Discovery, and Defender families are scheduled to arrive within the next five years.

These promises are part of JLR’s “Reimagine” plan, which sadly doesn’t include the next-generation Jaguar XJ as the fullsize luxury sedan – which was supposed to get an EV option – has been canceled at the very last minute. Jaguar has hinted that the stately sedan will return one day as an electric-only offering, but it’s unlikely to happen until towards the end of the decade at the earliest.

Jaguar Land Rover has already announced plans for an EV onslaught by introducing six purely electric vehicles across the Range Rover, Discovery, and Defender lineups within the next five years. A new report from Automotive News Europe states a zero-emissions variant of the Range Rover luxury SUV will lead the way, earmarked for a market launch sometime in 2024.

Meanwhile, the next-generation Range Rover is going to be introduced later in 2021 with a hybrid powertrain by combining a combustion engine with an electric motor. The future EV model will ride on Jaguar Land Rover’s newly developed Modular Longitudinal Architecture, which was supposed to debut in the following months on the all-new Jaguar XJ. However, the electric luxury sedan was canceled at the last moment, despite Jaguar’s intention to become a purely EV brand from 2025.

Starting from scratch with a platform tailored to electric vehicles would take a lot of effort, time, and most importantly, money. By finding a partner, Jaguar would be able to speed up development and reduce costs by achieving economies of scale, hence why the CEO Thierry Bollore says the company is already in talks “with a selection of actors” for a potential tie-up.

Interestingly, Jaguar’s head honcho says selecting the partner will depend on whether the hardware provided by the automakers will be compatible with the designs elaborated by Gerry McGovern, JLR’s head of design. In a separate interview with Automotive News Europe, Bollore said the platform “has to respect the proportion of the designs.”

McGovern has promised future Jaguar production models will be “absolutely modern and contemporary,” adding the cars “shouldn’t be retrospective at all and shouldn’t emulate anyone.”
