During a recent interview with Autocar, Jean-Philippe Imparato, head of Alfa Romeo, spoke about how the next-gen Giulia and how the demand for sedans is changing. While premium sedans, such as the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and Audi A4, are still successful, customers are beginning to desire alternatives more and more. Cars like BMW’s Gran Coupe models and Audi’s Sportback models are becoming increasingly popular, which is why Imparato is considering an additional body style for the upcoming Giulia.

“I don’t want to give up on the sedan [saloon] market,” Imparato told Autocar. “It’s in Alfa’s DNA to have a sporty sedan. But I also acknowledge that there were many suggestions that there should be a station wagon version of the Giulia. Maybe there’s a tipping point between the sedan and the station wagon. With a new Giulia, maybe we can have the best of both worlds.”

That certainly sounds like he’s considering either a wagon or some sort of Gran Coupe-like hatchback. However, it’s said Imparato has already given head designer Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos a proposal for a car similar to the Genesis G70 Shooting Brake.

Then there’s the knowledge that Alfa is looking to massively increase its electric vehicles efforts by 2025 and will likely offer a fully-electric Giulia variant. Can you imagine an all-electric Alfa Romeo Giulia wagon with similarly gorgeous styling as the current car and, hopefully, similar driving dynamics?

Alfa Romeo is quite late to the electrification bandwagon since the Tonale unveiled earlier this month is the company’s first plug-in hybrid. It won’t be for another couple of years when the fabled Italian brand will launch its first production vehicle with zero emissions. In an extended interview with Automotive News Europe, CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato announced the firm’s first BEV is earmarked for a 2024 release.

Positioned below the Tonale, Alfa’s subcompact crossover will ride on the CMP platform developed by parent company Stellantis. It’s going to be assembled at the Tychy factory in Poland and could go by the name of Brennero, although that has yet to be officially confirmed. What we do know from the company’s top brass is the B-segment crossover will also be sold with combustion engines.

The fact it will be available with gasoline powertrains doesn’t come as a big surprise since other CMP models are available in both ICE and EV flavors. Relevant examples include the Peugeot 208 / e-208, 2008 / e-2008, Opel Mokka / Mokka-e, Corsa / Corsa-e, Citroën C4 / e-C4, and the DS3 Crossback / DS3 Crossback E-Tense.

For an electric-only Alfa Romeo, you will have to wait until 2025 when a different car is scheduled to come out. From that point on, all future product launches will exclusively consist of BEVs. Just two short years later, in 2027, sales of vehicles powered by internal combustion engines will come to an end. Future models will include replacements for today’s Giulia sedan and Stelvio SUV, which will both become EVs and switch to the STLA Large platform currently being engineered by Stellantis.

A further expansion of the lineup is being considered, including a small hatchback to fill in the void left after the Giulietta’s demise. However, a decision is still pending since such a car would not come out sooner than 2027. Meanwhile, the STLA Large-based vehicles will be engineered with standard rear-wheel drive and the possibility of adding a front electric motor to enable AWD.

Alfa Romeo teased the return of the 8C and GTV a few years ago before deciding to prematurely pull the plug on the two sports cars. Thankfully, the Italian brand part of the Stellantis automotive conglomerate has not given up on the idea of true performance cars to live up to the marque’s heritage. CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato told Autocar a go-faster model is in the works and that details will be disclosed later in 2022.

It’s going to be either a one-off or an extremely limited production model to sit alongside permanent models like the Giulia, Stelvio, and the new Tonale. The performance-oriented vehicle will draw inspiration from the past in terms of design, specifically from the T33 Stradale and the Spider Duetto, but adapted for the impending electric era.

While Alfa Romeo’s head honcho didn’t specifically say it will be an EV, the company has pledged to abandon the combustion engine by 2027. Even if it won’t be a purely electric car, a hybrid powertrain seems like an educated guess as the stricter Euro 7 emissions regulations are coming in a few years. The Tonale is already available with a plug-in hybrid setup and chances are the Giulia and Stelvio will be electrified to some extent as well.

Meanwhile, the first EV has been confirmed to arrive in 2024 and could be an entry-level crossover positioned below the Tonale. It’ll supposedly be built in Poland and sold with the Brennero name as well as with combustion engines. In 2025, Alfa Romeo will launch its first EV-only model. Until then, a decision regarding a more potent Quadrifoglio variant of the Tonale will be taken before the end of the year.

Future Alfa Romeo models will share platforms, drivertrains, and production facilities with other automakers from Stellantis to drive down costs and speed up development. Lancia is being resurrected and it too will go purely electric in the coming years.

Alfa Romeo is finally ready to tackle the compact crossover segment by introducing the new Tonale positioned below the company’s larger Stelvio SUV. It’s the first plug-in hybrid model from the fabled Italian brand and takes after the namesake concept unveiled about two years ago at the Geneva Motor Show.

While it doesn’t look as attractive as the 2019 showcar, the production-ready Tonale is an appealing sporty crossover with a sharper design compared to the Stelvio. Alfa Romeo is the latest automaker to adopt an LED light bar at the back to keep up with the most recent design trends. Sleek headlights flank the unmistakable shield (Scudetto) grille to respect the heritage in the electrified era.

Shown here is the range-topping Veloce trim level as Alfa Romeo has already ruled out plans for a Quadrifoglio model. If you’re wondering about its size, the Tonale is 178.3 inches (4.53 meters) long, 72.4 inches (1.84 meters) wide, and 63 inches (1.6 meters) tall. Although images depict the European version, the compact luxury crossover will also be sold in the United States.

At the heart of the PHEV variant will be a turbocharged 1.3-liter gasoline engine delivering 180 horsepower to the front wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission. The four-pot combustion unit will work with an electric motor sending 90 kilowatts to the rear axle for a combined output of 272 hp and all-wheel drive. It will have enough PHEV punch for a 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) run in only 6.2 seconds.

Courtesy of a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 15.5 kWh, the electric range will surpass 30 miles (49 kilometers) on a single charge for the US model. As for the Euro-spec Tonale PHEV, it promises up to 50 miles (80 kilometers) in the city based on the WLTP cycle.

The Alfa Romeo Tonale will be available in the US with the plug-in hybrid as the optional powertrain alongside the standard 2.0-liter gasoline engine rated at 256 hp and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm). The non-electrified unit is hooked up to a nine-speed automatic also sending output to both axles. In other words, the high-riding Alfa will be sold in the US exclusively with the proprietary Q4 AWD system.

Elsewhere, the European version will be available with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine benefitting from 48V mild-hybrid tech to deliver 160 hp through a seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission. A lesser configuration with 130 hp is going to be offered, and it too will have the same gearbox. Alternatively, a 1.6-liter diesel rated at 130 hp and 235 lb-ft (320 Nm) will be offered together with a six-speed, dual-clutch auto.

These non-PHEV models are all front-wheel drive, but you do get an electronic limited-slip differential as standard equipment. In addition, an independent MacPherson suspension comes out of the box along with Brembo brakes with four-piston fixed and ventilated calipers.

Alfa Romeo will combine a fully digital 12.3-inch driver’s display with a 10.25-inch touchscreen for the infotainment, which has support for over-the-air updates and Amazon Alexa integration. Wireless Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and wireless charging are standard in the US where a lot of safety features are included even on the base model:

  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR)
  • Intelligent Speed Assist (ISA)
  • Blindspot and Rear Cross Path detection
  • Forward Collision Warning and Automatic Emergency Braking with pedestrian detection
  • Driver Attention Assist and rear-seat reminder
  • Lane Departure Warning with Lane Keep Assist

Alfa Romeo will have the Tonale on sale this April in Europe where it’s going to sell a Special Edition launch version. In the US, the sporty crossover will be available to order from the fourth quarter of the year, with customer deliveries to start in Q1 2023.

Alfa Romeo’s teaser campaign for the Tonale is in full swing, with a new episode confirming there will be a Veloce version. It could very well serve as the range-topping trim level considering a more potent Quadrifoglio has already been ruled out. Ahead of its official debut on February 8, the compact crossover shows its Misano Blue paint shared with the Giulia Veloce and Stelvio Veloce.

The sedan and larger SUV in the Veloce specification have the most powerful engine available, outside of the Quadrifoglio. This tells us it will be the same story with the Tonale as the Veloce-spec model will employ the most potent powertrain. According to previous reports, the plug-in hybrid is going to have the most oomph, courtesy of a combustion engine working together with an electric motor.

The PHEV setup is said to be good for 240 horsepower channeled to both axles exclusively via an automatic transmission. It is believed the electrified setup will be borrowed from the Jeep Compass 4xe, but reconfigured to deliver more performance as one would expect from an Alfa Romeo. In addition, the FCA Small Wide 4×4 architecture will be shared, meaning the Tonale is also going to be related to the Fiat 500X and the Jeep Renegade.

The Veloce badging on the tailgate denotes the trim level’s positioning in the range, while the LED lightbar split into two by the Alfa Romeo badge will be standard across the range. The sporty crossover named after an Italian mountain pass will enter production in the coming months. Below the PHEV version, there will be regular gasoline and diesel engines with less power and more attainable prices.

It will initially go on sale in Europe by mid-2022 and should make the trip to the United States by the end of the year or early 2023. The sub-Stelvio model could be followed by a third crossover, an even smaller one. Rumored to go by the name of Brennero, the model is said to be offered as a pure EV built in Poland on the eCMP platform from 2024.

A new Alfa Romeo model doesn’t come very often, so whenever that happens, you can rest assured the teaser campaign is going to be quite extensive. Case in point, the Tonale has been teased numerous times, but there’s still time for more previews until the big debut scheduled for February 8. The latest clip puts the spotlight on the iconic front grille, adorned by the famous badge.

Even though the Tonale won’t be an all-Alfa Romeo product since it will ride on a platform shared with other Stellantis models, the Italian marque has gone through great lengths to create a distinct visual identity. The sub-Stelvio model will be molded after a concept car unveiled three years ago and will do battle in a crowded segment with many compact luxury crossovers.

The Tonale is important not only because it’s a fresh product from Alfa Romeo, but also thanks to its powertrain as it will be the firm’s first-ever electrified model. The flagship trim level will adopt a plug-in hybrid powertrain with a gasoline engine and an electric motor contributing to an all-wheel-drive system. We’ve heard it will pack 240 horsepower and should offer a decent amount of electric range, although the battery’s size is not known for now.

Debuting in a week from today, the 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale is said to come in both LHD and RHD configurations along with a choice of three versions: Super, Sprint, and Ti. For a limited amount of time, there should be a fully loaded Special model with 20-inch wheels, matrix LED headlights, and Alcantara for the interior.

The PHEV setup we mentioned earlier could be shared with the Jeep Renegade 4xe, but tweaked for better performance since Alfa Romeo remains a sporty brand at its core. The five-seater crossover is expected to have a 12.3-inch fully digital driver’s display and a slightly smaller 10.25-inch touchscreen for a revamped infotainment system.

Named after an Italian mountain pass located in the Rhaetian Alps, the Tonale will also be offered with conventional gasoline and diesel engines priced below the PHEV. It will be built at the Pomigliano d’Arco factory in Italy and should go on sale in the coming months in Europe. Alfa Romeo plans to launch the new model in the United States as well but at a later date.

There’s no shortage of teaser videos for the Tonale as Alfa Romeo has already previewed its compact crossover a few times. The company’s first hybrid vehicle will break cover on February 8, so there’s still plenty of time to build up hype until the world premiere. In the latest episode of the lengthy teaser campaign, the Italian brand takes a peek inside the cabin.

The 13-second clip shows black leather upholstery with red stitching and the Alfa Romeo logo embroidered onto the headrests. We also get to check out the sporty steering wheel with perforated leather and what seem to be aluminum shift paddles behind it. The Italian flag appears to adorn one of the exterior lights as a nod to the firm’s place of birth 111 years ago.

Previous teasers have shown a fully digital instrument cluster and hints of the exterior largely carried over from the namesake concept car introduced nearly three years ago. The Alfa Romeo Tonale is believed to feature a PHEV setup for its top-spec configuration, good for approximately 240 horsepower sent to both front and rear wheels.

If you’re wondering about the crossover’s size, it will certainly be smaller than the Stelvio. Unconfirmed reports state it will be 4,528 millimeters (178.2 inches) long, 1,835 millimeters (72.2 inches) wide, and 1,835 millimeters (72.2 inches) tall. It’s said to have a wheelbase of 1,835 millimeters (72.2 inches) and ride on alloy wheels no bigger than 20 inches.

Going on sale in Europe in the second half of the year, the Tonale is also scheduled to arrive in the United States in 2023. Alfa Romeo will assemble the sporty crossover at its Pomigliano d’Arco factory in both left- and right-hand drive configurations. Regular trim levels will include Super, Sprint, and Ti, but early adopters will also be able to get a limited-run Special equipped with all the bells and whistles.

The Tonale, Alfa Romeo’s very first hybrid, has been teased relentlessly since the concept debuted in March 2019 at the Geneva Motor Show. Three years later, the wraps will come off on February 8 when the compact crossover during a dedicated event named “La Metamorfosi” (“The Metamorphosis”). Before that happens, the fabled Italian brand has plenty of time for yet more teasers.

In a new preview released today, Alfa Romeo is providing a first (albeit shadowy) glance inside the cabin. The focal point of the 12-second clip posted on social media is the Tonale’s fully digital instrument cluster. Being a sporty crossover with premium aspirations, we are expecting the high-tech setup to be included as standard even on the base trim level.

A member of the vast Stellantis group, Alfa says the driver’s configurable display carries the name “Cannocchiale,” which is Italian for “telescope.” It will be part of a “driver-centric cockpit” and will likely show this animation when you fire up the engine. The teaser video indirectly shows the front fascia of the production model before providing a quick look at the tachometer that appears to max out at 7,000 rpm.

The Tonale will be offered with a plug-in hybrid powertrain for the flagship version, which is believed to have all-wheel drive. We’ve heard through the grapevine it will pack around 240 horsepower, with the combustion engine driving the front wheels and the electric motor propelling the rear axle. In terms of size, reports state it will have a wheelbase of 2,636 millimeters (103.7 inches) and an overall length of 4,528 millimeters (178.2 inches). Width and height will stand at 1,835 millimeters (72.2 inches) and 1,835 millimeters (72.2 inches), respectively.

Coming to the United States, the 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale is due to enter production in late March at the Pomigliano d’Arco plant in Italy. It will be assembled in Super, Sprint, and Ti trim levels, plus a fully loaded Speciale launch edition with 20-inch wheels, matrix LED headlights, and Alcantara on the inside.

At long last, Alfa Romeo has officially confirmed when the Tonale will be fully revealed. After an extensive teaser campaign, the wraps are finally coming off February 8 when the compact crossover will break cover. Positioned below the larger Stelvio, the new model will serve as a much-needed extension to the lineup since the Italian brand is currently selling only two cars.

With the 2022 Geneva Motor Show canceled, the Italian marque part of the Stellantis group will organize a dedicated event for the Tonale. The digital word premiere dubbed “La Metamorfosi” (“The Metamorphosis”) will be hosted on www.alfaromeousa.com at 9 AM Eastern Time. The fact it will be hosted on the US site tells us the model will be offered in North America alongside the Giulia sedan and Stelvio SUV.

Originally previewed in March 2019 by a namesake concept, the production version has been delayed by the microchip shortage and the lack of suitable performance of the plug-in hybrid system. It’s now ready for primetime and we’ve heard the PHEV variant will serve as the flagship model. However, it won’t be labeled as a Quadrifoglio trim level as it’s the case with the Giulia and Stelvio.

Alfa Romeo’s first electrified car is said to offer a combined output of 240 horsepower from an electric motor driving the rear wheels and a combustion engine powering the front axle. Equipped with AWD, the Tonale PHEV will be positioned above conventionally powered versions with their gasoline and diesel engines.

If our sources are correct, the vehicle will be 4,528 millimeters (178.2 inches) long, 1,835 millimeters (72.2 inches) wide, and 1,604 millimeters (63.1 inches) tall. It is said to have a wheelbase measuring 2,636 millimeters (103.7 inches) and come with wheels as large as 20 inches. Super, Sprint, and Ti trim levels are reportedly on the agenda, along with a limited-run Speciale equipped with all the bells and whistles.

Series production is allegedly starting towards the end of March in Italy at the Pomigliano d’Arco factory.

As a Christmas present to Alfa Romeo fans, the fabled Italian brand released a short teaser video of its hotly anticipated Tonale. The compact crossover is making the headlines once again courtesy of another preview released on social media to bring in the new year. With the sub-Stelvio model, the company part of the Stellantis group promises to “make your heart beat” in 2022.

Down to just two models – the Giulia and Stelvio – Alfa Romeo is in dire need of new products. The Tonale has been a long time coming since the original concept debuted nearly three years ago at the Geneva Motor Show. The namesake production version was supposed to break cover at the same show this upcoming March, but the event has been canceled.

It will go down in history as the first Alfa Romeo model to offer an electrified powertrain, namely a plug-in hybrid setup. The Tonale PHEV will sit at the top of the crossover’s lineup and is said to come exclusively with all-wheel drive. Rumor has it the version with a charging port will offer 240 horsepower after combining the combustion engine driving the front wheels with the electric motor powering the rear axle.

It is believed Super, Sprint, and Ti trim levels are planned, plus a launch edition called Speciale and fitted with matrix LED headlights, 20-inch wheels, and Alcantara for the interior. If you’re wondering about its size, we’re hearing it’ll be 4,528 millimeters (178.2 inches) long, 1,835 mm (72.2 in) wide, 1,604 mm (63.1 in) tall, and with a wheelbase stretching at 2,636 mm (103.7 in).

The world premiere is allegedly taking place on February 8 before production starts in late March at the Pomigliano d’Arco factory. European sales are set to commence on June 4 if recent reports can be trusted. The Alfa Romeo Tonale will also be sold in the United States where it might share its underpinnings with an equivalent Dodge Hornet also debuting in 2022.
