Supercar Blondie goes behind the scenes with the Lexus All-Electric Sport Concept. Even though the LFA successor does not have an official name yet, we do know that it will feature a fully electric drivetrain with a mind-blowing performance. In the next few years, Lexus is preparing to launch a new family of electric vehicles, including some supercars. The swoopy two-door coupe looks absolutely sensational and we hope the final version won’t stray away too far from the concept.

Technical specifications are still very much shrouded in mystery, although we are being told it inherits the “secret sauce” of the iconic LFA, a V10-powered supercar. Toyota’s luxury division has previously said the Electrified Sport can do 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in the low two-second range. Lexus says the development would include the adoption of solid-state batteries to speed up charging and increase driving range. The use of next-gen batteries tells us the electric performance machine will likely come out towards the end of the decade.

Lexus says the Electrified Sport concept has been envisioned to cover in excess of 700 kilometers (435 miles) between charges. However, it’s unclear upon which testing cycle this number is based, so we’ll have to wait and find out whether it’s WLTP, EPA, or Japan’s JC08. To live up to its sports car status, the production vehicle that will evolve from the spectacular concept promises to deliver a “seamless connection of deceleration, steering, and acceleration at all times.”

In this video, Supercar Blondie provides an in-depth walk around of the electric concept while also featuring some unique design details.

We’ll be brutally honest and admit we were taken by surprise to learn Lexus is still making the CT. The aging hybrid hatchback originally went on sale back in January 2011, and yet here it is, more than 11 years later, still being offered at home in Japan. Its days are numbered as production will finally be coming to an end in October. However, not before one final special version pompously dubbed “Cherished Touring.”

One of the early electrified cars from Toyota/Lexus, the CT200h was updated in 2014 when it adopted the corporate spindle grille and received a more rigid body to lower NVH levels. Three years later, the spindle grille received a mesh pattern and the company included the Lexus Safety System+ as standard equipment. Since its launch in early 2011, around 380,000 units have been sold in approximately 65 countries.

Its swan song is the CT200h Cherished Touring based on the Version C grade with six selectable exterior finishes, including two-tone paints. For the front grille, fog light bezels, and rear bumper bezel, Lexus has come up with a silver finish. Inside, the limited-run hybrid hatch gets crimson and crimson black stitching on the heated front seats and door cards.

To sweeten the deal, Toyota’s luxury division is selling the CT200h Cherished Touring with a heated steering wheel. It costs 4,223,000 JPY, which works out to approximately $36,500 at current exchange rates. The special variant boasts the same naturally aspirated 1.8-liter gasoline engine working together with an electric motor and a small 1.3-kWh nickel-metal battery pack. It provides a combined output of 134 horsepower delivered to the front wheels via an eCVT.

The Lexus CT200h was discontinued in the United States after 2017 but it continued to live in the UK until towards the end of 2020. The company’s Australian division pulled the plug on the electrified hatchback in November 2021 because it did not meet the latest side-impact crash test rules. Come October, the Japanese-built model will be dropped in its home market as well.

Toyota put on quite an EV show in mid-December 2021 by unveiling more than 10 concept cars it hinted will evolve into production models. By far the most exciting of them all was the Lexus Electrified Sport, which has now returned in more official images with the promise to hit the streets by 2030. The swoopy two-door coupe looks absolutely sensational and we hope the final version won’t stray away too far from the concept.

Technical specifications are still very much shrouded in mystery, although we are being told it inherits the “secret sauce” of the iconic LFA, a V10-powered supercar. Toyota’s luxury division has previously said the Electrified Sport can do 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in the low two-second range, thus making it about as quick as a Tesla Model S Plaid.

When the concept was unveiled on December 14 last year, Lexus said the development would include the adoption of solid-state batteries to speed up charging and increase driving range. The use of next-gen batteries tells us the electric performance machine will likely come out towards the end of the decade. Meanwhile, parent company Toyota has pledged to install a solid-state battery in a production car by 2025, but the tech will premiere in a hybrid rather than pure EV.

Since we mentioned the range, Lexus says the Electrified Sport concept has been envisioned to cover in excess of 700 kilometers (435 miles) between charges. However, it’s unclear upon which testing cycle this number is based, so we’ll have to wait and find out whether it’s WLTP, EPA, or Japan’s JC08.

To live up to its sports car status, the production vehicle that will evolve from the spectacular concept promises to deliver a “seamless connection of deceleration, steering, and acceleration at all times.” The road-going model will follow the recently announced RZ and also a bigger, potentially three-row electric SUV also teased last year during the Toyota/Lexus BEV announcement.

The UX 300e unveiled in late 2019 was Lexus’ first, albeit shy attempt at jumping on the electric bandwagon. The small crossover is essentially an EV adaptation of the gasoline-fueled small crossover, thus making the newly released 2023 RZ 450e the company’s first true electric car. What comes after that? Potentially, a production version of the Electrified SUV concept.

If the name doesn’t ring a bell, Lexus previewed a large SUV without a combustion engine in mid-December 2021 when together with parent company Toyota, no fewer than 15 EVs were shown. Technical specifications are still shrouded in mystery, but these fresh images do paint a more accurate picture of what to expect from a possible production vehicle.

It appears to be visibly larger than the RZ, which leads us to believe Lexus is preparing a three-row electric SUV. Come to think of it, Toyota also teased a bigger bZ-badged model in December, one that would be positioned above the recently launched bZ4X. Chances are the Electrified SUV concept pictured here is going to serve as a more premium alternative to the Toyota model.

The fully blacked-out windows tell us Toyota has not finished the interior, which consequently means we shouldn’t expect a production version anytime soon. In fact, neither of the two Japanese automakers said anything about when and if those concepts from last December will see the light of production day. If the Lexus Electrified SUV concept is happening, it’s unlikely to arrive until closer to 2025.

There was a time when cameras instead of side mirrors meant the car was a concept, but that’s no longer the case since there are production vehicles with side cameras. In fact, the Lexus ES was among the first to ditch the old-school mirrors back in 2018 before other EVs followed suit. Speaking of which, slim LED taillights have also become the norm lately on electric cars.

We are anxious to learn more about the two, potentially fullsize SUVs that Toyota and Lexus are working on. These will do battle with the Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 7, among other big electric vehicles.

Lexus has teased the RZ on numerous occasions, but this is the best preview thus far. A more luxurious alternative to the Toyota bZ4X, the first dedicated electric vehicle from the premium brand will follow up on the UX 300e, which is an electric adaptation of the gasoline-fueled small crossover. The fresh imagery attached here was released together with the company’s 2021 global sales results.

Known by its full name as the 2023 Lexus RZ 450e Direct4, the bespoke EV will ride on the same platform as the bZ4X as well as the Subaru Solterra. The new official photos strongly suggest it’s related to the other two electric SUVs since the shape is familiar, but with Lexus’ corporate front fascia and sleeker lighting.

Interior images have yet to be revealed, but it’s only a matter of time before Subaru will show us the cabin since the RZ will go on sale in the coming months. We are also patiently waiting to learn about the technical specifications, which are largely shrouded in mystery for now. That said, the Direct4 setup is good for a pair of electric motors providing 200 horsepower and 221 pound-feet (300 Newton-meters) of torque each.

The 450e Direct4 will come as standard with all-wheel drive and it’s unclear whether less trim levels will follow with a single-motor, two-wheel-drive setup. Understandably, the Lexus version will pack more punch than its Toyota equivalent to justify what will certainly be a premium the posh electric crossover is going to command over its mainstream sibling.

Other known tidbits include support for torque vectoring by independently sending torque to each wheel based on the driving conditions. In addition, the Lexus 450e Direct4 will also adopt steer-by-wire and more upmarket materials inside to distance itself from the bZ4X. All these add-ons over the Toyota model should drive up the starting price to roughly $50,000.

The RZ is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of EV ambitions as Lexus aims to sell only zero-emissions cars in Europe, North America, and China by 2030. By then, the Japanese marque hopes to deliver 1 million vehicles annually, with the ultimate goal being to become a purely electric brand by the middle of the next decade.

Lexus sure is taking its sweet time redesigning the RX considering the midsize luxury SUV has been around in its fourth generation since 2015. It might just be worth the wait if we were to rely on a couple of reports originating from Japan, both of which are saying the Mercedes GLE will be heavily electrified. While the base RX350 will have a turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine replacing the current naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6, the other three versions will be hybrids.

The RX 350h is apparently going to combine a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated unit with an electric motor to mirror the NX 350h, followed by a more potent RX 450h+ as a plug-in hybrid with an 18.1-kWh battery pack. The PHEV could borrow the hardware from the smaller NX 450h+ where the total output stands at 305 hp (227 kW) and 391 Nm (288 lb-ft) from the combustion engine and front plus rear electric motors.

At the top of the range, Lexus is reportedly planning to have an RX 500h using an upgraded 2.4-liter turbo engine and a single electric motor. Codenamed T24A, the combustion engine would be shared with the base RX 350 while adding an e-motor for extra oomph. The four-cylinder mill was launched last year in the NX 350 where it makes 275 hp (205 kW) and 430 Nm (317 lb-ft). These output numbers should significantly grow courtesy of the electric motor.

Likely transitioning to the TNGA platform, the 2023 Lexus RX is expected to break cover in the second half of the year. It will utilize the company’s latest-generation infotainment and also feature up-to-date safety and driver assistance systems. Unconfirmed reports state it might come only with a two-row configuration to make room for a new TX model featuring three-row seating.

The hybridized RX will complement the fully electric RZ, representing a more luxurious version of the Toyota bZ4X and the mechanically related Subaru Solterra. It’s the first dedicated EV from Lexus after the UX300e based on the conventionally powered small crossover. The RZ represents a step towards the company’s goal to become an all-electric marque in the United States, China, and Europe by 2030. Just five years later, Lexus will discontinue all cars equipped with combustion engines.

Lexus introduced the second-generation back in June 2021 before putting having it on sale in Japan in November. The company’s very first production model to feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain is now being showcased at the 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon as an Offroad concept. As denoted by its name, the showcar at TAS explores the luxury crossover’s outdoorsy nature through a few upgrades.

For example, the NX 450+ as it’s known by its official name has received a suspension lift to make room for those chunky all-terrain tires that are wider than those found on the standard model. The showcar adopts an attractive bronze paint (Iron Oxide) combined with matte black accents noticeable on the plastic body cladding of the wheel arches.

The large roof rack expands the crossover’s practicality and gives it a more outdoorsy vibe at the same time. Toyota’s premium division doesn’t go into any other details, but it’s safe to say the ground clearance and suspension travel are substantially more generous to help the electrified NX better tackle bumpy roads. Of course, it’s still based on a unibody platform, so don’t go into thinking it’s now a veritable off-roader like a Jeep Wrangler or a Ford Bronco.

Positioned at the top of the NX’s range, the 450+ combines a gasoline 2.5-liter, inline-four engine with two electric motors for a total output of 302 horsepower. It enables the all-wheel-drive crossover to cover the 0 to 60 mph sprint in six seconds. The lithium-ion battery has a capacity of 18.1 kWh and provides enough juice for 37 miles (60 kilometers) according to the EPA rating while the total range stands at 550 miles (885 kilometers).

As a final note, the NX PHEV Offroad Concept shares the spotlight at TAS with the ROV Concept. It’s labeled as a Recreational Off Highway Vehicle powered by a three-cylinder 1.0-liter engine that feeds on compressed hydrogen.

Earlier this week, Toyota revealed a whopping 15 concept cars depicting future EVs, some of which will carry the Lexus badge. The premium division will become exclusively electric in North America by 2030 where the RZ crossover will serve as its first production vehicle without a combustion engine. It was briefly shown during the conference on December 14, and now it’s back to fully reveal its exterior design.

Looking a tad more sophisticated than the mechanically related Toyota bZ4X and Subaru Solterra, the RZ is being featured in the initial 450e version, with future configurations likely arriving later in the life cycle. In case it looks familiar, the zero-emissions crossover was previewed earlier this year by the LF-Z Electrified concept. It will serve as the company’s first dedicated EV as well as the second electric model ever after the UX300e.

Lexus refrains from going into details regarding the technical specifications for the time being, but rumor has it the electric crossover will pack more punch than the equivalent Toyota. It should get a pair of electric motors providing an all-wheel-drive system and extra muscle over the 215 hp available in the AWD-equipped bZ4X. It’s worth mentioning the base variant of Toyota’s EV makes do with 201 hp and 2WD from a single motor.

At the heart of the RZ 450h will be a new powertrain dubbed as the “Direct4,” which is believed to offer a combined output of anywhere from 350 to 400 horsepower in this application. On top of that, Lexus’ version should have a fancier interior with better materials to justify its luxury car badge and what will certainly be a premium over the similar bZ4X.

Chances are it will set you back somewhere in the region of $50,000, with a more aggressive F Sport trim on the agenda as well. The full reveal could take place in the coming weeks as the vehicle will go on sale for the 2023 model year in the United States.

By 2030, Lexus will be an EV-only brand not just in North America, but also in Europe and China. In 2035, it will globally end sales of vehicles with internal combustion engines.

Toyota had a busy day by previewing several new electric vehicles all arriving by the end of the decade, including a sports car, a three-row SUV, and spiritual successor to the FJ Cruiser. Not only that, but its luxury brand Lexus also offered a first glimpse at what it plans to roll out in the coming years in regard to vehicles that will do away with the combustion engine.

We are excited to see an early preview of the LFA supercar’s spiritual successor taking the shape of a two-door performance coupe with a purely electric powertrain. Lexus has said it’s targeting a sprint to 62 mph (100 km/h) from a standstill in a little over two seconds. The engineering team has not ruled out solid-state batteries, which would give the athletic EV a driving range of over 700 kilometers (435 miles).

Lexus RZ

Elsewhere, Lexus has removed the camouflage from the RZ, a dedicated electric crossover serving as a more premium alternative to the Toyota bZ4X, which itself is mechanically related to the Subaru Solterra. It’s scheduled to go on sale in 2022 and should have similar technical specifications combined with an oh-so-familiar design and a more upmarket interior cabin.

But wait, there’s more. Lexus is also providing a first look at a low-slung, four-door electric sedan reminding us of the Porsche Taycan or Audi E-Tron GT. A large three-row SUV is also on the agenda, and the extended EV family will apparently include a wagon and even a four-seat convertible. However, these two body styles likely don’t rank high on the list of priorities since the crossovers and SUVs have far bigger potential in terms of volume.

Lexus electric sedan

Lexus aims to offer EVs in all segments of the market by 2030 when it will become a purely electric brand in North America, Europe, and China. Just five years later, there won’t be any models left with a combustion engine in the company’s global lineup.

It was at the end of March this year when Lexus introduced the LF-Z Electrified concept as a sign of things to come regarding its first dedicated EV. Fast forward to early December, we are now getting a first official peek at the production model due to arrive in 2022. Known as the RZ, the new zero-emissions vehicle will take after the concept in terms of exterior design.

While Lexus is not disclosing any technical specifications of its electric SUV, we do know it will ride on the e-TNGA platform that has already underpinned the Toyota bZ4X and Subaru Solterra. However, the teasers hint at a more coupe-like appearance and a sportier stance with less ground clearance than its mainstream siblings.

The 2023 Lexus RZ will be available with all-wheel drive courtesy of electric motors mounted at the front and rear. Steer-by-wire technology has also been previously confirmed, which should translate into sharp cornering for what will be a fairly large and heavy SUV.

It looks quite promising thus far, featuring an edgy design and a full-width LED light bar at the rear where RZ has dual spoilers. An angular front fascia is expected to carry a massive spindle grille despite not having a combustion engine under the hood that would require cooling.

We will remind you the LF-Z Electrified had 536 hp and 516 lb-ft (700 Nm), enabling the concept to reach 62 mph (100 km/h) from a standstill in three seconds en route to a top speed of 124 mph (200 km/h). Its fairly large 90-kWh battery pack provided a maximum range between charges of 600 kilometers (373 miles) based on the WLTP cycle.

It’s too soon to say whether the production version will adopt the same hardware used by the concept. The latter tipped the scales at 2,100 kilograms (4,630 pounds) for a vehicle that was 4,880 mm long, 1,960 mm wide, and 1,600 mm tall. Its wheelbase measured 2,950 mm and the battery supported charging at up to 150 kW.

The RZ will be Lexus’ second production EV after the smaller UX 300e, which rides on a platform originally intended for vehicles with combustion engines.
