The Renault Group had its annual conference detailing what happened in the year before while talking about the future. We already know the Scenic name will be repurposed for a new EV after being in use since 1996 on a series of minivans. The company with the diamond logo has confirmed the future zero-emission model will ride on the CMF-EV platform.

If that association of letters rings a bell, it’s because the Megane E-Tech Electric and the Nissan Ariya also utilize the same architecture. A new report from Auto Express states the Scenic replacement will be yet another crossover, bigger than the Megane in order to compete with the Volkswagen ID.4.

Renault’s head honcho Luca de Meo has told the British publication the hydrogen concept teased during the conference will eventually spawn a production version. AE believes the showcar we’ll see in May is going to provide a window into the Scenic’s future. Details are limited at this point, but the company’s boss did say it will be more spacious than the Megane E-Tech Electric while offering additional range.

While the Scenic minivan has been offered with three rows of seats, its electric successor will come exclusively with five seats. We also know from Renault’s VP of engineering Gilles Le Borgne an all-wheel-drive version is being considered to mirror the old Scenic RX4. According to the report, there could be 40- and 60-kWh battery packs and fast-charging from 10% to 80% in half an hour.

The design is expected to take after the Megane, but with a taller roof for superior headroom. It should be more practical in terms of cargo by featuring a tailgate extending all the way down to the bumper for a bigger opening area.

The concept car’s novel hydrogen-fueled combustion engine will showcase Renault is keeping its options open when it comes to curbing CO2 emissions. However, the subsequent production vehicle will be a battery-powered EV.

The Renault Group Conference held today contained interesting details about how the French company aims to bolster its offerings in the EV segment. The electric onslaught is kicking off this year with the launch of the Megane E-Tech crossover, joined by the Kangoo EV van and a zero-emission sedan part of the Mobilize car-sharing branch.

Things will be relatively quiet in 2023 when only two products will hit the streets, a tiny city car for Mobilize and a passenger version of the Kangoo van. 2024 will be the busiest year with the launch of four Renault models, a Dacia EV, and an Alpine without a combustion engine. We already knew about the Renault 5 and its hotter Alpine equivalent, and Luca de Meo announced today the next-generation Dacia Spring is also coming that year.

It will retain its CMF-A platform rather than switching to the CMF-B architecture underpinning the Renault 5 and the future Renault-built Nissan Micra replacement. The head honcho went on to say the Renault 4 is also going into production as a CMF-B-based car while the aging Scenic minivan will switch to the CMF-EV platform. It’s already in use for the Megane E-Tech and Nissan Ariya, with the Alpine GT-X Over crossover due in 2025 to use the same underpinnings.

As you have probably guessed by now, the big vehicle hiding under a white car cover is an electric van, potentially a Renault Trafic EV or Master EV. Although 2026 is not included in the roadmap, that’s when we are expecting to see a sports car from Alpine, co-developed with Lotus to replace the mid-engined A110 Coupe available today.

Meanwhile, Renault will unveil a revolutionary concept car this coming May with a combustion engine adapted to run on hydrogen. Toyota is working on this promising technology as well, but it remains to be seen whether it’s feasible for production.

Following a report published at the beginning of the week by Reuters, the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance has confirmed plans for a veritable EV onslaught. The three automakers will spend a combined €23 billion ($25.7 billion) in the next five years to bolster their electric car portfolios. The massive investment will help the trio introduce a whopping 35 purely electric vehicles by the end of the decade.

About 90% of these new arrivals will ride on five common EV architectures and will be sold in the vast majority of countries around the world. The most affordable ones will sit on the CMF-AEV platform, which is already in use for the Dacia Spring – Europe’s cheapest electric car on sale today.

Even smaller EVs are planned on KEI-EV underpinnings developed for kei cars sold in Japan. The platform will be inaugurated in the coming months by Mitsubishi and Nissan with their “ultra-compact” models for the local market.

Up next is the LCV-EV platform, which as its name implies, it’s tailored to light commercial vehicles such as the already available Nissan Town Star and the Renault Kangoo.

The Renault Megane E-Tech Electric and Nissan Ariya share the CMF-EV architecture, which will be used by 15 models by 2030. The alliance estimates it will be able to build as many as 1.5 million cars each year on this platform.

Then there’s CMF-BEV, set to arrive in 2024 as “the most competitive compact electric platform in the world.” Cars using this hardware will offer more than 400 kilometers (250 miles) of range combined with superior aerodynamics and performance. At the same time, Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi mentions costs will come down by a third and the necessary power consumption will be reduced by more than 10% compared to the Renault Zoe.

CMF-BEV will underpin the revival of the Renault 5 as well as a new zero-emissions Nissan model to replace the Micra supermini. There will also be Alpine-branded vehicles on this platform, which the alliance says will serve as a foundation for an annual car production of 250,000 units.

Aside from rolling out new EVs, the three are working with battery suppliers to halve costs by 2026, rising to 65% by 2028. By the end of the decade, a total battery production capacity of 220 GWh is expected. Interestingly, mass production of solid-state batteries is scheduled to commence by the middle of 2028.

Some major news could be coming our way later this week if we were to rely on a new report from Reuters. The international news agency is citing two sources familiar with a new plan Renault, Nissan, and Mitsubishi are working on to boost their electric vehicle portfolios. The automakers are said to invest about $23 billion in the development of EVs in the next five years.

It is believed more than 30 vehicles are slated to arrive by the end of the decade. The alliance is apparently working on five different platforms that will underpin this new wave of new EVs. One of them is already in use as the CMF-EV has underpinned the Renault Megane E-Tech Electric and the Nissan Ariya crossovers pictured here. In addition, another architecture already underpins the Dacia Spring for low-cost electric city cars.

2023 Nissan Ariya

Reuters goes on to mention that a separate platform will be used for kei cars in Japan where Mitsubishi will begin to sell later this year a production version of the K-EV concept X Style. Also coming in 2022 will be a mechanically related Nissan IMk. Light commercial vehicles are getting their own dedicated electric platform, with the fifth and final one arriving by 2025 for smaller cars.

New EVs will include the revival of the Renault 4 and 5, along with the next-generation Nissan Micra supermini, which will all likely sit on that fifth common platform. To drive down manufacturing costs and speed up development, the three automakers are expected to share the batteries packs as well as many of the other components. In addition, there are plans to boost battery production by 2030 to 220 GWh in Japan, China, France, and the United Kingdom.

Rumored to go by the name of “Alliance to 2030,” it is believed the plan will be officially presented this Thursday, January 27.

Here we go again. Renault is the latest in a long string of automakers signaling the gradual demise of the internal combustion engine in Europe. According to CEO Luca de Meo, the French marque will become an entirely electric car manufacturer on the Old Continent by 2030. A similar timeframe has been provided by Ford of Europe, Bentley, Rolls-Royce, and Volvo.

Most brands part of the Stellantis automotive conglomerate will also ditch gasoline and diesel engines between now and the end of the decade. These include Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Opel/Vauxhall, Lancia, Peugeot, Maserati, and DS Automobiles. Genesis will wave goodbye to old-school engines in 2030 as well, while mainstream brands Hyundai and Kia have already announced to go EV-only by 2035.

In addition, BMW-owned MINI will exclusively sell EVs by the early 2030s and Mercedes has said it will be ready to sell only electric cars in 2030, but only where market conditions will allow.

Getting back to Renault, its head honcho revealed during a media event hosted at the R&D center near Paris the company “will be 100 percent electric in 2030 in Europe.” It would appear the automaker with the diamond logo is accelerating its EV efforts as a statement made in July 2021 by its CEO mentioned 90 percent of the firm’s cars would be electric by the end of the decade. Now, the percentage has been bumped to cover all cars.

De Meo specified only Renault-badged vehicles will drop the ol’ ICE in Europe by 2030 as its low-cost division Dacia is expected to still sell cars with traditional powertrains even after that date. He went on to mention the Romanian brand will embrace electrification “at the last possible moment” while still living up to its ethos of providing great value for money.

2035 could represent the cutoff date for combustion engines provided a proposal made by the European Union will be voted favorably. Until then, much stricter emissions regulations are scheduled to come into effect in the latter half of the decade when car manufacturers will have to comply with the Euro 7 standard.

Renault will soon be bidding adieu to the Kadjar by replacing its popular compact crossover with the new Austral. Carrying the new diamond logo already applied onto the zero-emissions Megane E-Tech, the revamped C-segment offering will share the underpinnings with the latest Nissan Qashqai. A mild hybrid system is all but confirmed, and we are also expecting a plug-in hybrid derivative badged as the Austral E-Tech.

The French brand is being coy on technical specifications for the time being, only saying the new model will have roughly the same length as its predecessor by measuring 4.51 meters. That will make it slightly longer than the equivalent Qashqai, and chances are the difference will be in the wheelbase to give the Renault version a roomier cabin with better rear legroom.

It’s worth mentioning Nissan has yet to launch the hybrid version of its Qashqai, which is due in 2022 with the E-Power suffix. The Japanese crossover will have an interesting electrified setup since the combustion engine won’t actually drive the wheels. Instead, the gasoline-fueled mill will be used at all times to recharge the battery, which in turn will use its energy to juice up the electric motor that will provide the propulsion.

As for the electrified Austral, it’s expected to use a conventional plug-in hybrid setup already implemented in the Captur E-Tech where a naturally aspirated gasoline engine works with an electric motor and a battery. The 1.6-liter, four-cylinder unit and the e-motor provide a combined output of around 160 horsepower, but that number might be bumped for the Austral since it will be heavier.

The engineers have fitted the PHEV-spec Captur with a 9.8-kWh battery pack good for 30 miles of electric range, but once again, the increased curb weight of the Austral might require a bigger battery to achieve that range. The new compact crossover will be the latest model in a long string of electrified Renault products as the Clio supermini and the compact Megane family have been hybridized already, along with the Arkana coupe-SUV.

Additional details should be disclosed early next year taking into consideration the model will go on sale this upcoming spring, suggesting a world premiere could take place at the beginning of 2022. Next fall, an all-electric SUV will be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show set for mid-October.

It was only at the beginning of the month when Renault took the wraps off the Megane E-Tech Electric at the IAA Munich show and now the French brand is revealing plans for another electric SUV. The upcoming zero-emissions model was confirmed by the company’s vice president for engineering, Gilles Le Borgne, in an interview with Auto Express magazine.

It’s set to be an electric companion to the Kadjar crossover, which will transition to the second generation in 2022 and keep its internal combustion engines. The new EV will ride on Renault-Nissan’s CMF-EV platform, which has been conceived for vehicles up to 4.7 meters that have a maximum wheelbase of 2.78 meters.

It’s unclear at this point how large it will be, but it will definitely slot above the Megane E-Tech Electric, which has an overall length of 4.21 meters and measures 2.7 meters between the axles. Even if it will be roughly as large as the Kadjar, being a bespoke EV from day one will make it more spacious inside thanks to better packaging and shorter overhangs.

Le Borgne said the unnamed EV is being developed to “easily fit our 60 [kWh battery],” adding the vehicle could have a floor-mounted pack as large as 87 kWh. Equipped with the bigger of the two batteries, it should enable the SUV to cover about 310 miles between charging. Speaking of which, it’ll take just 35 minutes to charge the battery from 10% to 80%, resulting in a range of approximately 190 miles.

According to Auto Express, the version equipped with the smaller battery will have an electric motor good for 215 hp whereas the 87 kWh model is expected to have a slightly punchier 239 hp e-motor. A rear motor to enable all-wheel drive is not on the agenda to mirror the AWD-equipped Nissan Ariya, but the British magazine claims a hot Alpine version is planned with a dual-motor layout.

The new SUV will be followed by additional electric vehicles in the years to come, including revivals of iconic models such as the Renault 5 and 4.

In case you’ve missed the memo, Mobilize is a new business unit created by the Renault Group tailored to mobility services. After unveiling a tiny EZ-1 Prototype for the urban commute at the beginning of the year, Mobilize is back to introduce a more substantial car with a rather unoriginal name. Simply called Limo, it’s an all-electric sedan you won’t be able to purchase outright.

Instead, the Mobilize Limo will be a subscription-only EV destined for ride-hailing services for taxis and private hire vehicles. The all-electric sedan is 4.67 meters long, 1.83 meters wide, and 1.47 meters tall, which makes it almost as large as a car from Europe’s midsize segment. If you’re wondering about the wheel size, the car rides on a 17-inch set with smoke-finish lacquered aluminum rims.

It looks significantly different than any other Renault sedan before, but that’s to be expected since it’s technically not a Renault. The Mobilize Limo has a fastback-esque roofline and impressively short overhangs, suggesting it rides on a dedicated EV platform rather than using underpinnings adapted from a conventionally powered car.

The overall design looks like something you’d expect from a Toyota or a Lexus, but perhaps executed in such a way as to cater to European tastes. The Limo has pop-out electronic door handles for better aerodynamics and hosts a generous 2.75-meter wheelbase to deliver copious amounts of rear legroom. The trunk area is also fairly large, offering a cargo capacity of 411 liters and one of those small temporary spare tires underneath the floor.

Stepping inside, the side-by-side screens dominate the dashboard, with the driver’s fully digital display measuring 10.25 inches while the touchscreen stretches at 12.3 inches. Thankfully, the Mobilize Limo still has physical, separate controls for the climate settings, providing quicker access rather than having to navigate through the infotainment’s many menus.

Mobilize, or should we say, Renault, says three adults can fit in the back where there’s 288 mm of knee room and a completely flat floor as you’’ expect from a bespoke EV. Accessing those seats is done through wide-opening rear doors, while the removable middle armrest boasts a pair of cup holders. There are also volume controls in the back, along with dual USB ports and adjustable air vents.

The Limo is powered by a sole electric motor producing 150 hp (110 kW) and 220 Nm (162 lb-ft) of torque, giving it a fairly brisk acceleration to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 9.6 seconds and a top speed of 87 mph (140 km/h). There are three selectable driving modes (Normal, Sport, Eco) and three-stage configurable regenerative braking.

The electric motor gets its juice from a 60-kWh lithium-ion battery pack providing approximately 450 kilometers (280 miles) of range in the WLTP cycle. It supports both AC and DC charging systems and can provide a range of 155 miles (250 kilometers) in only 40 minutes thanks to fast-charging capabilities.

Equipped with full-LED lights, eight airbags, front/rear parking sensors, and a generous array of safety and assistance systems, the Mobilize Limo will make its public debut at the IAA Munich show next month in Germany where Renault will deploy 40 sedans as a trial run. The model will be available for ride-hailing services in the latter half of 2022.

It was mid-October 2020 when Renault signaled its intentions towards coming out with a compact crossover riding on a dedicated electric platform. The Megane eVision concept was followed last month by a thinly covered pre-production prototype, and now we finally know when the road-going model is set to make its world premiere.

Debuting September 6 at the IAA Munich Motor Show will be the Megane E-Tech, essentially Renault’s version of the Nissan Ariya as both ride on the same CMF-EV architecture. Even though it will be unveiled this fall, the zero-emissions crossover won’t be going on sale until 2022 when it will join the Twingo and Zoe electric city cars.

Renault will have a heavily electrified portfolio at the show in Munich as the Megane E-Tech will be joined by a prototype of the hotly anticipated R5 as well as the company’s current crop of E-Tech hybrid models. In addition, the Mobilize sub-brand will have its own section at the newly designed “Renault studiault” booth.

Additional details about the new EV crossover have not been disclosed, but we do know it will be initially offered with a single electric motor producing 217 hp (160 kW). The Megane E-Tech will incorporate a 60-kWh battery with enough juice for 280 miles (450 kilometers) of range in the WLTP cycle.

Time will tell whether Renault will use the beefier dual-motor, all-wheel-drive setup of the more expensive Ariya versions, which also get a larger 91-kWh battery. The high-end Nissan model offers a meaty 389 hp (290 kW) and 443 lb-ft (600 Nm) for a 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) sprint in as little as 5.1 seconds.

The Megane E-Tech, Renault 5, and the revival of the Renault 4 will help the French brand achieve its ambitious goal to mostly sell electric vehicles by the end of the decade. According to the firm’s updated EV target, 90% of sales will be represented by vehicles without a combustion engine by 2030.

The Renault 5 prototype you see here won’t be the only electric revival of an iconic model from the French brand as the Renault 4 will also be making a comeback. The exciting news was shared today by the company with the diamond logo during its ElectroPop online event detailing plans for an accelerated EV adoption in the coming years.

Details are slim at the moment of writing but Renault says it will “revive another magic, iconic star currently named ‘4ever’ signifying the intention to make it a timeless classic.” While the Renault 5 showcar here will take the shape of a supermini, it is believed the 4 will be a crossover sharing the same retro-flavored design.

Both models will be underpinned by a newly developed CMF-BEV platform developed from day one exclusively for subcompact electric cars. Renault says the underpinnings will shave off costs by a third compared to the current Zoe while promising a maximum range of up to 400 kilometers (249 miles) in the WLTP cycle.

No fewer than 10 EVs will be launched by the middle of the decade by the Renault Group (including Alpine), some of which will ride on the CMF-EV architecture tailored to the C and D segments. Leading the way will be next year’s MeganE electric crossover due to be built in Douai, France as a sister model of the Nissan Ariya.

Sub-brand Alpine, which will morph into an EV-only marque, will introduce its first zero-emissions model in 2024 as per an announcement made during ElectroPop. By 2025, the Renault brand targets EVs and hybrids to account for more than 65% of total sales, with 90% of sales at the end of the decade to be represented strictly by EVs. The company’s previous target of 90% for 2030 included hybrids, but now the strategy has been revised to exclude them.

The 4ever is expected to arrive after the 5, but the automaker hasn’t provided a timeframe as to when exactly the reborn Renault 4 will be out.
