Volkswagen took the wraps off the ID.5 in early November 2021 but it has yet to deliver a single car to customers. As a matter of fact, the German automaker has even had trouble supplying demo cars to dealers due to supply shortages. The ongoing war in Ukraine caused by Russia has greatly impacted the automotive industry, specifically in terms of wire harness supply as many manufacturers are based in the war-torn country.

For this reason, VW has now decided to push back the launch of the electric coupe-SUV until the first week of May. The ID.5 together with its sportier, all-wheel-drive ID.5 GTX sibling is going to be assembled in Germany at the Zwickau factory. Production at the plant has been paused due to parts shortages but will be operational once again next week.

Series production of the ID.5 commenced at the end of January but was later interrupted by the geopolitical situation in Ukraine. At the same factory in Zwickau, the VW Group also makes the ID.3 and ID.4 electric vehicles for its core brand, plus the Cupra Born and the Audi Q4 E-Tron / Q4 E-Tron Sportback. All of them ride on the MEB platform, which has also underpinned the Skoda Enyaq and Enyaq built at home in the Czech Republic at the factory in Mladá Boleslav.

Already ruled out for the United States, the ID.5 is essentially a coupe-styled version of the popular ID.4 It’ll be offered in Europe in the Pro, Pro Performance, and GTX trim levels. Depending on the configuration, power will vary from 174 hp to around 300 hp. In its sportiest version, the swoopy SUV has dual motors and all-wheel drive to hit 62 mph (100 km/h) in 6.3 seconds. Flat out, it’ll reach an electronically governed top speed of 112 mph (180 km/h).

Another model the US doesn’t get is the ID.6, a larger three-row SUV made in China for the local market. The EV is not available in Europe either, but there are reports about VW importing 15,000 units per year to the Old Continent. However, nothing is official at this point.

The fact Volkswagen is kicking off production of a new electric car isn’t what we would call breaking news. After all, the German automotive conglomerate is expanding its portfolio at an unprecedented rate, fueled by its continuous EV push. The latest to join the lineup is the ID.5, together with its high-performance GTX counterpart.

The reason why we’re making such a big deal out of this is that the VW core brand has successfully transformed one of its plants from ICE to EV production. The Zwickau factory located in western Saxony is the first of many assembly facilities to come that will drop gasoline/diesel cars to focus solely on electric models. No fewer than six EVs from VW, Audi, and Cupra brands are made there, with all sharing the omnipresent MEB platform.

Later this year, VW will kick off production of electric vehicles at the Emden plant where the ID.4 will be assembled, while Hanover will be responsible for the much-hyped ID. Buzz van. In addition, the Chattanooga factory in the United States recently ended production of the Passat midsize sedan to make room for the US-spec ID.4. In 2022 alone, VW estimates it will be able to build 1.2 million EVs on the MEB platform, provided we include Chinese production.

Until the end of the year, VW hopes to exceed the output achieved at the Zwickau plant in Saxony where 180,000 cars were built throughout the course of 2021. Converting the plant from ICE to EV required an investment of approximately €1.2 billion in the last four years, with nearly 40% of the funds spent to expand and upgrade the body shop. In addition, more than 50,000 square meters of new building space have been created.

Aside from the ID.5 / ID.5 GTX, the VW Group also puts together at the Zwickau plant the ID.3, ID.4, and non-VW models such as the Audi Q4 E-Tron / Q4 Sportback E-Tron and the Cupra Born.

Volkswagen has some good news to share in Europe where existing owners of the ID.3 hatchback or the ID.4 and ID.5 SUVs will be able to take advantage of quicker charging. New software will be rolled out via an over-the-air update for vehicles equipped with the 77-kWh battery that will boost charging power from 125 kW to 135 kW. In the case of the sportier ID.5 GTX, it will increase to 150 kW.

What does that actually mean in terms of charging times? Well, the OTA update will shave off as much as nine minutes from the time it takes to replenish the battery pack from 5% to 80%. In addition, the software revision comes along with a new Battery Care Mode that once activated, it won’t allow the owner to charge the battery to more than 80%. Doing so will increase the battery life’s, therefore changing the pack should be less of a concern.

The revised software will be baked into newly assembled ID.3, ID.4, and ID.5 models going forward, meaning future owners won’t have to download the OTA update after taking delivery of the vehicle. The changes planned by VW for its trio of dedicated electric models available in Europe also include support for bidirectional charging, but once again, only for the vehicles fitted with the 77-kWh battery.

Also on the way is an updated infotainment system structured in a clearer way. For example, the charging menu will be displayed at the top level. There’s an Online Route Calculation built into the navigation system that automatically calculates multi-stop route planning for extended trips in such a way as to reach the destination as quickly as possible. It does the necessary calculations based on the provided traffic and route data and how much battery charge the driver still wants to have at the end of the journey.

The tweaks will arrive in the near future and chances are equivalent EVs from Audi, Skoda, and Cupra will follow suit.

After a lengthy teaser campaign that started during the ID.4 GTX’s official reveal in late April, Volkswagen is finally taking the wraps off the ID.5 coupe-SUV together with its performance-oriented GTX sibling. While the conventionally styled electric vehicle has a 0.28 drag coefficient (0.29 for GTX), its swoopy sibling is much sleeker, achieving a Cd of only 0.26 for the regular models and 0.28 for the spicy GTX.

Needless to say, it’s far from being a real coupe since we are still dealing with a vehicle carrying rear doors that also happens to be an SUV twinned with the Audi Q4 Sportback E-Tron. Nevertheless, it does look slightly more exciting than the ID.4 and we’re hoping this design language will one day be adapted for a genuine two-door sports car in an authentic coupe format.

Volkswagen will sell its latest electric vehicle based on the MEB platform in three distinct flavors: ID.5 Pro, ID.5 Pro Performance, and the flagship ID.5 GTX. The base model gets a single electric motor with 174 horsepower (128 kilowatts) sent to the rear wheels to enable a 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) run in 10.4 seconds en route to a top speed of 99.5 mph (160 km/h).

Step up to the midrange model and you’re still stuck with a RWD layout and one e-motor, but power grows to 204 hp (150 kW). It reduces the sprint time by a full two seconds to 8.4s while the maximum speed remains intact, at 99.5 mph (160 km/h).

As for the crown jewel of the lineup, the ID.5 GTX gets a dual-motor, AWD setup with a combined output of 299 hp (220 kW). Adding an electric motor at the front axle has lowered the sprint time furthermore, now taking just 6.3 seconds. Not only that, but the top speed has increased to 112 mph (180 km/h).

Regardless of the one you go for, all three versions of the Volkswagen ID.5 come with a lithium-ion battery pack featuring a capacity of 77 kWh. Both rear-wheel-drive configurations of the Skoda Enyaq Coupe iV sister model have enough juice for up to 323 miles (520 kilometers) in the WLTP cycle. Upgrading to the hotter GTX will come with a range penalty since the dual-motor variant is heavier, which is why the battery will be good for only 298 miles (480 kilometers).

Once the battery is depleted, it can be charged at up to 135 kW, in which case juicing up the battery for half an hour will result in 242 miles (390 kilometers) of range for the ID.5 models and 199 miles (320 kilometers) for the ID.5 GTX. The Wolfsburg marque is happy to report the zero-emissions stylish SUV will feature support for bi-directional charging, allowing owners to power external devices using the energy stored in the battery pack.

There’s not much to say about the interior as it has been virtually carried over from the ID.4 and ID.5 GTX. You get the same 5.3-inch driver’s display accompanied by a 12-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system with support for over-the-air updates. At an additional cost, the EVs will be sold with a head-up display featuring augmented reality tech similar to what you’ll find in luxury cars such as the latest Mercedes S-Class and the electric EQS.

You will be forgiven for thinking the ID.5 is less practical than the ID.4 because of its coupe-esque roofline, but that’s actually not the case. VW says the cargo capacity is 549 liters, which is slightly more than what the regular model offers. Fold down the rear seats and the volume grows to 1,561 liters provided you load the SUV up to roof height.

Paying for the premium that comes with buying the GTX will get you an assortment of red accents throughout the interior as a nod to the classic red upgrades available in the traditional GTI models VW has been selling for decades with gasoline engines. In the company’s vision, GTX is seen as the GTI of the future considering the days of the internal combustion engine are numbered. The company intends to become net carbon neutral by the middle of the century at the latest.

Getting there will require a veritable EV onslaught, which will continue in 2022 with the hotly anticipated production version of the ID. Buzz. The ID. Space Vizzion is also evolving into a production model seen as a future replacement for the midsize Passat sedan and wagon. VW is already selling a three-row ID.6 electric SUV in China, but plans are already in motion for an even larger ID.8 due to arrive later this decade along with the flagship Trinity sedan.

It’s a known fact Volkswagen is intensifying its EV efforts by expanding the ID family of dedicated electric cars. The ID.4 GTX, a high-performance version of the zero-emissions SUV premiered earlier this year with a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive layout and close to 300 horsepower. At the model’s world premiere, VW also briefly showed a more stylish derivative that will go by the name of ID.5 GTX.

Following the sneak peek from late April, the peeps from Wolfsburg are now getting ready to unveil the electric coupe-SUV at the IAA Munich Motor Show in Germany on September 6. Meanwhile, images of a camouflaged near-production have been released to announce the impending debut of what will essentially be VW’s equivalent of the Audi Q4 Sportback E-Tron.

Oddly enough, the ID.5 GTX we will be seeing in September won’t be the final, camo-free version as the German automaker describes it as a near-production concept in disguise. We do know quite a lot about the purely electric coupe-SUV, including its combined output of 295 horsepower and 348 pound-feet (472 Newton-meters) of torque to mirror the ID.4 GTX.

VW promises the new ID.5 GTX will offer 497 kilometers (309 miles) of range with the 77-kWh battery pack per the WLTP test cycle. That’s actually a bit more than the 480-km (298-mile) range quoted for the ID.4 GTX. The difference likely stems from the coupe SUV’s more aerodynamic shape, much like Audi’s electric Sportback SUVs have better efficiency than their conventionally styled versions.

As far as performance is concerned, look for the ID.5 GTX to hit 62 mph (100 km/h) in 6.2 seconds and top out at an electronically governed 112 mph to echo the ID.4 GTX. The run from a standstill to 37 mph (60 km/h) should take 3.2 seconds.

Going forward, the “GTX” suffix will be used as the electric equivalent of GTI to signal the performance version of an electric car. As some of you will recall, the ID.3 hatchback was shown recently by VW with a dual-motor setup and AWD for the ID.X concept, but there are currently no plans for a production version.

VW will have the regular ID.5 and its amped-up GTX sibling on sale in 2022 as part of the company’s efforts to increase the share of EV sales in Europe to 70% by the end of the decade. In the long run, it aims to become carbon neutral by 2025.

Today’s digital event organized by Volkswagen was mostly about the ID.4 GTX, a high-performance derivative of the compact electric SUV. However, towards the end of the event, the peeps from Wolfsburg briefly put the spotlight on another upcoming electric vehicle. The ID.5 was shown for the very first time as a coupe-styled derivative of the ID.4, but all covered up since the world premiere will take place later this year.

VW also confirmed the ID.5 will also spawn a go-faster GTX version with a dual-motor setup providing 295 horsepower and all-wheel drive. As a matter of fact, the camouflaged vehicle featured in the teaser video depicts the GTX model judging by the three vertical lights and the swanky 3D-esque LED taillights. The colorful disguise will come off towards the end of 2021 when the big debut is scheduled to take place.

Essentially, the ID.5 will be a sister model of the Audi Q4 Sportback E-Tron and the upcoming Skoda Enyaq iV Coupe. It won’t be a true coupe since we’re still dealing with a five-door SUV, but the more sloped roofline will give it a coupe-like side profile. The sportier silhouette is likely to eat into the available rear headroom and/or the cargo capacity, but that’s a sacrifice some will accept to make for the sake of added style. That said, the latter part is subjective since not all people are fans of the coupe-SUV mashup.

If history has thought us anything it’s that the base rear-wheel-drive ID.5 with 201 horsepower will be more expensive than the equivalent entry-level ID.4, and it will be the same story with the hotter GTX. The teaser campaign is starting today, so we should hear more about the next member of the ID family in the coming months.

Sadly, there’s no word for the moment about an ID.3 GTX to serve as an all-electric hot hatch. We do know a cheaper ID.1 is coming in 2025, after the ID Buzz in 2022 but before the Trinity sedan in 2026.

Volkswagen has issued a press release about how it not only met its CO2 fleet targets in 2020, but it actually dropped below the legal target. That’s not particularly exciting, but an interesting phrase caught our attention – “In the current fiscal year, Volkswagen will expand its offerings based on the modular electric drive matrix (MEB): This way, the fully electric models ID.4, ID.4 GTX and ID.5 will gradually be launched in international markets.”

To our knowledge, this is the first official confirmation from VW about introducing the ID.4 GTX and ID.5 in 2021. We knew these were on their way, but we finally have the news straight from the horse’s mouth. Details about the electric SUVs were not disclosed by the German automaker, although we have a pretty good understanding of what to expect from the two MEB-based EVs.

Both will obviously be closely related to the ID.4 pictured here, but with some important differences. The GTX will serve as the performance version by utilizing dual electric motors to enable an all-wheel-drive system. It’s said to have a combined output of 302 horsepower and 339 pound-feet (460 Newton-meters) of torque. The electric punch will be good for a 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) sprint in 6.2 seconds and a maximum speed of 112 mph (180 km/h).

The ID.4 GTX will be visually distinguishable from the standard model thanks to redesigned front and rear bumpers as well as bespoke alloy wheels and some changes inside the cabin. VW’s engineers will lower the ride height and work on the chassis to make the GTX more fun to drive, also helped by the stickier tires and other revisions.

As far as the ID.5 is concerned, it will essentially be a coupe take on the ID.4 from which it will inherit the hardware. This one too is expected to spawn a GTX variant with the same dual-motor AWD setup, but it will likely come at a higher price as coupe-SUVs are typically more expensive than the conventionally styled models they’re based upon.

Further down the line, Volkswagen’s electric portfolio will grow with the addition of an ID.6 sedan and wagon combining the footprint of a Passat with the interior space of a Phaeton. An ID.7 is on the agenda as well, serving as the biggest model to ride on the MEB platform and molded after the ID Buzz electric minivan concept.
