With good reason, Mercedes made the headlines this year mostly thanks to the fullsize EQS sedan, its new electric flagship serving as an EV counterpart of the traditional S-Class range topper in terms of positioning in the range. However, we mustn’t omit the EQA and EQB crossovers that were also revealed this year, along with the EQE.

We haven’t heard much about the smaller electric sedan since the three-pointed star unveiled the Tesla Model S competitor in September during the IAA Munich show. With production starting by mid-2022, it means the EQS will arrive in the United States either towards the end of next year or early 2023. In the meantime, a near-production prototype has been stalked on the roads of sunny California.

About the size of a CLS, the first-ever Mercedes EQE has a wheelbase that is 90 millimeters shorter compared to the EQS. Another difference between the two electric vehicles is the switch to a conventional trunk lid for the smaller electric sedan whereas its bigger brother has a more practical liftgate.

That said, you can easily observe the overall styling bears a striking resemblance to that of the EQS, up to the point it’s actually a bit difficult to tell them apart. The EQE does seem a bit sportier thanks to a more compact size, and there will eventually be a smaller model since Mercedes has confirmed plans for an electric equivalent of the C-Class.

The orange side markers on the front bumper denote we’re dealing with the North American variant of the EQE, specifically the 350 model. Power is provided by an electric motor with 288 hp and 391 lb-ft (530 Nm) sent to the rear wheels. Its battery pack has a usable capacity of 90 kWh and enables the BMW i4 competitor to cover up to 410 miles (660 kilometers) on a single charge in the WLTP cycle.

Since it won’t be going on sale anytime soon in the United States, Mercedes has not disclosed pricing details so far. However, the 2023 EQE should considerably undercut the base EQS 450+ available in the US from $102,310. Further down the line, a high-performance AMG EQE 53 will follow.

The electric onslaught never ends at Mercedes HQ considering a lot of EVs are on the way despite a busy 2021 which included the unveiling of the EQA and EQB crossovers as well as the EQS and EQE sedans. The three-pointed star has also previewed the EQS SUV with a glitzy Maybach concept and has promised to put a zero-emissions G-Class in production in 2024.

In the meantime, 2022 will be the year when both the EQS and EQE sedans will spawn SUV equivalents, following a January reveal of the hugely promising Vision EQXX with more than 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) of range. Before all of these big debuts, there’s a lot of testing that needs to be done. Case in point, the EQE SUV has now been spotted roaming the streets of Germany while stubbornly keeping the full camouflage attire.

Considering the EQE sedan looks pretty much like a downsized version of the EQS, we are expecting the same story for their SUV counterparts. It is the impression we are getting from this disguised prototype, which had some interesting wheels likely designed with aerodynamic efficiency in mind since the five spokes are extremely wide and cover most of the surface.

Much like the big-brother EQS SUV, the upcoming EQE SUV will ride on a dedicated electric car platform and is going to be offered in rear- and all-wheel-drive configurations with single- and dual-motor setups, respectively. The sedan has so far been presented only in the EQE 350 guise with a rear-mounted motor good for 288 horsepower and 391 pound-feet (530 Newton-meters) of torque, but 4Matic versions will follow and logic tells us there will be a high-performance AMG derivative as well.

From an air suspension and rear-wheel steering to a screen-heavy interior and a big 90-kWh battery pack, the Mercedes EQE SUV is shaping up to be a true Tesla fighter. It’ll also support over-the-air updates and charging at speeds of up to 170 kilowatts as seen in the sedan. Much like the sedan, its high-riding cousin has door handles that sit flush with the body for better airflow to improve efficiency. We can’t see the prototype’s interior, but rest assured it will have a completely flat floor thanks to the bespoke EVA2 modular platform.

Following its official premiere happening later next year, the Mercedes EQE SUV should go on sale either by the end of 2022 or early 2023.

Mercedes has already kicked off the teaser campaign for the EQE, a smaller electric sedan that will be positioned below the flagship EQS. Ahead of its official debut next month at the IAA Munich show, the Tesla Model S rival from the three-pointed star has now been spotted undergoing final testing on the busy streets of Germany.

It stubbornly has a full camo attire as the luxury brand doesn’t want to reveal the EQE’s design secrets just yet. Admittedly, we already have a pretty good understanding of how the car is going to look as it’s easy to imagine it will be a shrunken-down EQS, but with a couple of fairly significant changes. We can already tell it’s less swoopy and boxier than its bigger brother, and it seems to have a trunk lid instead of a more practical liftgate.

The man with the camera wasn’t able to take a peek inside the cabin, but we’ll remind you Mercedes has already previewed the EQE’s interior through a revealing teaser image. Unsurprisingly, the cabin is going to be virtually identical to that of the EQS, but without the passenger-side screen offered as optional equipment on the larger and more expensive EV.

The EQE won’t be the only world premiere from Mercedes at IAA Munich as we’ll also get to see a high-performance version of the EQS joined by a plug-in hybrid AMG GT 4-Door Coupe with a rumored 800-horsepower output. The fully electric EQS SUV will be previewed by a Maybach-badged concept and we’re hearing an all-electric G-Class, tentatively called EQG, will be there as well prior to the production model’s confirmed arrival in 2024.

Another electrified product from Mercedes that enthusiasts are patiently waiting for is the AMG One, a hybrid hypercar that uses a Formula 1-derived turbocharged 1.6-liter V6 engine working together with four electric motors. It was originally unveiled as a concept nearly four years ago, but development hurdles have pushed back the production version’s debut, consequently delaying the start of customer deliveries.

Fresh spy footage from the Nürburgring shows electric vehicles take as much abuse as conventionally powered cars while undergoing testing. Prototypes of the Mercedes EQE carrying the full production body were recently spotted at the Green Hell during high-speed evaluations, complete with emergency braking and tire-screeching sequences.

It might seem like a smaller EQS, but there are some notable differences compared to Mercedes’ flagship electric car beyond the footprint. For starters, the EQE is a proper sedan with a trunk lid whereas its bigger brother is a more practical liftback in the same vein as the Tesla Model S. It also has a slightly boxier shape rather than the swoopy silhouette of the EQS.

Mercedes has previously stated this will be its direct answer to the Model S as the larger and more luxurious EQS plays in a league of its own. Both luxury electric models from Mercedes will be getting high-performance AMG versions to better rival the fast Teslas, with the Model S Plaid deliveries kicking off June 10 after multiple delays.

Some have called the EQE as the electric equivalent of the E-Class, but that’s not entirely accurate. It will be a dedicated EV rather than an electric adaptation of the gasoline- and diesel-fueled traditional model by using the same flat-floor EVA platform as the EQS. It’s also going to look significantly different than the E-Class, which we can already see despite the heavy camouflage.

Mercedes will officially unveil the EQE this September and introduce an SUV version (teased above) in 2022 when the EQS will also spawn a sports utility vehicle counterpart. Further down the line, a smaller C-Class-sized EV will be launched on a dedicated platform, but it won’t arrive until the middle of the decade at the earliest.

We’re expecting the EQE sedan to come in both rear- and all-wheel-drive configurations by featuring single- and dual-motor setups, respectively. It likely won’t be offering the impressive 770 kilometers (478 miles) of range promised for the EQS, but it should have enough battery juice to (largely) cure range anxiety.

Now that Mercedes has introduced the EQS flagship electric vehicle, we are gradually turning our attention towards yet another member of the company’s growing zero-emissions portfolio. Already officially confirmed to debut in September, the EQE will be the E-Class of EVs in the same vein as the EQS represents the S-Class of electric vehicles.

Meanwhile, there’s still testing that needs to be done to iron out all the kinks. A near-production prototype has been spotted approaching an intersection while still carrying extensive camouflage. We can’t help but notice the mismatched wheels, with the front ones being the more interesting thanks to a sportier design and what seem to be golden brake calipers.

It could be a sign we’re dealing with a performance version of the EQE, especially since the front brake rotors are rather large and the tires appear to have a low profile. It’s worth mentioning the prototype is a traditional sedan with a proper trunk lid whereas the bigger EQS is a more practical liftback. You can easily tell this is a sedan by the placement of the third brake light.

The swoopy styling of the EQS is not as dramatic on the EQE, but nevertheless, we’re getting the feeling both high-end electric cars will share a lot of the design cues. A closer look shows pop-out door handles and the washer fluid cap on the front fender, thus mirroring Mercedes’ range-topping electric car. The disguise gets in the way, but logic tells us there will be LED light bars at the front and rear. In addition, a blocked-off front grille is also a certainty since it’s installed on all EQ-badged models, including the recently unveiled EQB crossover.

We’re hearing Mercedes will offer the EQE with all-wheel drive, meaning there will be a dual-motor configuration with some serious power and near-instant torque. The engineers are apparently targeting a maximum range of 600 kilometers (373 miles) in the WLTP cycle, which is a plausible figure considering the crown jewel of the lineup offers 770 km (478 miles) with the biggest battery.

With a September reveal confirmed at the 2021 IAA show in Munich, we’re expecting Mercedes to kick off the teaser campaign in a couple of months in the build-up to the EQE’s big debut. Sales could start before the end of the year or early 2022.

It’s safe to say Mercedes’ electric car portfolio is shaping up quite nicely. The EQA compact crossover unveiled at the beginning of the year will be followed soon by a roomier and boxier EQB model. While these two are electric conversions of vehicles equipped with combustion engines, the more important EVs are due later this year on a dedicated electric car platform.

Mercedes CEO Ola Kallenius has told Automotive News Europe the EQE is going to premiere in September at the IAA show in Munich. Developed on the Electric Vehicle Architecture (EVA), the new luxury sedan is seen by the three-pointed star as a direct answer to the likes of Tesla Model S, Porsche Taycan, and the recently launched Audi E-Tron GT.

Before Mercedes comes out with the EQE, the larger and more expensive EQS will be unveiled first. Recent reports indicate the official debut is scheduled to take place as early as next month. Ola Kallenius didn’t go into details about when the company will unveil the fancier electric sedan, but it did say it’ll be in a class of its own.

“There will not be a luxury sedan in the market, nor is there one right now, that compares to the size, the packaging and the space as the EQS. It sits a segment above, including a back seat where you can actually sit comfortably.”

Spy shots and teasers have revealed the EQE and EQS will look substantially different than the conventionally powered E-Class and S-Class sedans by adopting sleeker body shapes. While the bigger of the two EVs has been confirmed with more than 435 miles (700 kilometers) of WLTP-certified range, numbers for the EQE have not been released.

The EQE should offer a solid range and fast-charging capabilities considering the vehicle has been developed from day one as an EV, thus without making any compromises usually associated with ICE-powered cars turned into EVs. Being a dedicated electric car, the amount of space available inside the cabin should be comparable to that of a combustion-engined model from a segment above.

Mercedes will kick off production of the EQE later this year at the Bremen and Beijing factories, with an SUV equivalent to hit the assembly line in 2022 at the Tuscaloosa plant. The more sophisticated EQS will also spawn an SUV counterpart next year, with an electric G-Class to follow later this decade.

All eyes are on Mercedes and its flagship EQS electric vehicle, so it’s understandable why the EQE hasn’t been getting that much attention in recent months. It will come as a surprise to some that the smaller of the two electric sedans is not that far behind, with the world premiere scheduled to take place in the latter half of 2021.

Meanwhile, there’s still a lot of testing that needs to be done before the EQE is ready to hit the assembly line. A prototype was caught on camera this week wearing full camouflage attire while silently cruising the streets of Germany. The new posh electric sedan is not ready yet to reveal its secrets, but the work-in-progress vehicle does give us an idea of what to expect from the final product.

For starters, it’s not going to be a traditional sedan as it will adopt a sloping roofline inspired by those of the company’s swoopy sedans, namely the CLA and the larger CLS. The prototype seems to have a proper trunk lid as opposed to the EQS, which was caught on camera recently featuring a more practical hatchback configuration.

Speaking of the EQS, its smaller sibling adopts similar pop-out door handles and the side mirrors mounted lower on the doors for better airflow. This prototype might look a bit ungainly because it lacks the final headlights and taillights as these are only provisional clusters used in the testing phase. Nevertheless, the location of the production-ready lights is not going to change.

The test vehicle appeared to have an unusually high ride height with plenty of space within the wheel wells. Codenamed V295, The EQE might’ve had air suspension and the engineers were testing out some specific settings of the Airmatic system tailored to the new electric vehicle. Also in that area, we can’t help but notice the generous size of the brakes, which isn’t all that surprising considering we’re dealing with a large and heavy EV.

For whatever reason, Mercedes decided to slap a pair of fake exhaust tips at the back, peeking through the mesh on both lower corners of the bumpers. The camo with vertical slats applied onto the trunk lid is also rather strange, and we’re getting the impression the rear camera is neatly integrated behind the three-pointed star badge.

The interior remains a mystery at this point, although it would make sense for the EQE to inherit the fancy Hyperscreen (pictured above) from its larger brother. In other words, expect a screen-heavy dashboard with a fully digital instrument cluster, a wide touchscreen, and a third display mounted on the passenger side of the dashboard. On the EQS, the Hyperscreen will be an optional feature with a combined 56 inches of screen real estate.

Riding on the Electric Vehicle Architecture (EVA) developed from the ground up for zero-emissions cars, the EQE will be produced at the Bremen (Germany) and Beijing (China) factories. In 2022, the EQE SUV will be added to Mercedes’ growing EQ lineup and is going to be assembled in Tuscaloosa (US).

Mercedes is doubling down on its electrification efforts by developing its first platform exclusively catered to EVs. While the EQA, EQC, and the forthcoming EQB trace their origins in traditional cars powered by combustion engines, the EQS will be the first to be engineered from the ground up as an electric car. Sitting right below it in the growing EQ hierarchy will be this – EQE.

It should be similar in terms of size to the E-Class, although the new flat-floor Electric Vehicle Architecture (EVA) should result in a roomy interior comparable to cars from a segment above. A heavily disguised prototype of the EQE has been spotted enduring heavy snow on the streets of Germany ahead of a reveal scheduled to take place before the year’s end.

The EQE looks far more stylish than the conventionally styled E-Class, featuring a swoopy roofline similar to what the EQS will have. The test vehicle appeared to have the full production body, but it was missing the final taillights as those simple circular lights that stick out from the back are only a provisional set. For whatever reason, Mercedes made cutouts in the rear bumper to put fake exhaust tips to try and trick the untrained eye into believing the prototype had a combustion engine.

Look closer and you can spot the charging port on the front fender on the driver’s side, mirroring the layout found on the larger EQS. Speaking of which, it will be interesting to see whether the EQE will inherit the 56-inch Hyperscreen of its bigger brother, perhaps scaled down a bit to fit the car’s smaller footprint.

Mercedes has already announced the EQE will go into production at the Bremen factory in Germany in the second half of 2021, with the Beijing plant in China to follow shortly. Come 2022, an EQE SUV will be produced in Tuscaloosa in Alabama, United States where the three-pointed star will also assemble the bigger EQS SUV.

These four dedicated EVs are the stepping stone to a more sophisticated Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture (MMA) coming in 2025 with the promise of a generous driving range between cycles of more than 750 miles (1,207 kilometers). The EV range-topper will be positioned above the EQS and is expected to be previewed in the years to come by the Vision EQXX concept.
